Vera Franklin
STANLEYTOWN, Va. - Vera Thomas Franklin, 88, of 1598 Fairystone Park Hwy., died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center.
Born July 6, 1911, in Elamsville, she was the daughter of Landon Jefferson Thomas and Sarah Salmons Thomas. Prior to her retirement, she worked for Bassett Walker Knitting Company. She was also a member of First Baptist Church of Bassett where she was a Sunday School teacher for 25 years.
She was predeceased by two sons, David and Michael Franklin; seven sisters, Elva Pendleton, Stella Lackey, Nora Lackey, Nannie Lackey, Mae Stevenson, Lucy Craig and Ola Thomas; and one brother, Grady Thomas.
Survivors include three daughters, Nadine Franklin of Stanleytown, Peggy Jenkins of Decatur, Ala., and Jackie Tuttle of Bassett; one son, George F. Franklin of Land O'Lakes, Fla.; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the First Baptist Church of Bassett with the Rev. Lew Bennett officiating. Interment
will follow at Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Bassett.

Loyd R. Harvey
DANVILLE, Va. - Loyd R. Harvey, of 296 Arnett Blvd., died Thursday, March 2, 2000, in Piney Forest Health Care Center, after seven years of declining health.
Born Oct. 4, 1915, in Spray, N.C., he was the son of James W. Harvey and Ida Hill Harvey. He was married
to Ruby Jackson Harvey, who survives. He was a graduate of Brosville High School and Southwestern University School of Accounting in Los Angeles. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European theatre where he received three bronze stars. Prior to his retirement, he was a partner of Harris, Harvey, Neal & Company. He was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church where he was a former deacon, former chairman of the Finance Committee and a member of Chapel Sunday School class.
He was a former president of the Roanoke area chapter of the Virginia Society of CPAs, a member of the American Institute of CPAs. He was a former president of the Danville Host Lions Club and was a Melvin Jones Fellow.
He was predeceased by one brother, James B. Harvey.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two daughters, Diana Harvey McFarling of Danville, Connie Harvey Alderson of Ringgold; one brother, Garner W. Harvey of Danville; one sister, Evelyn H. Lloyd of Walnut Cove, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Lee D. Ellison and the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Ethel Hodges
DANVILLE, Va. - Ethel Scott Hodges, 71, of 180 Lamberth Drive, Lot 15, died Wednesday March 1, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after several years of declining health.
Born March 15, 1928, in Danville, she was the daughter of David Luther Scott and Bessie Jo Lipford Scott. She was married
to Harold Clyde Hodges, who predeceased her. She spent most of her life in Danville where she worked for Dan River Inc., and was later employed in home health care. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Clyde Scott Pruitt of Danville; two sisters, Gertrude Scearce and Geneva Harville, both of Danville; one granddaughter and three step-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Steve W. Greer officiating.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Lottie L. Hodnett
GRETNA, Va. - Lottie L. Hodnett, 76, of 1308 Virginia St., died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 10, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Wesley Hubbard and Mary Betty Davis Hubbard. She was employed by the Pittsylvania County School System in food preparation. She was a member of the Cherrystone Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Deaconess Board, Missionary Society, Cherrystone Baptist Association, Rebecca Mullin Club, Baptist General Convention, Lott Carey Foreign Mission and as a pastor's aide.
She was predeceased by five brothers, James Albert Hubbard, Andrew Hubbard, Richard Hubbard, Alcy Hubbard and Robert Wesley Hubbard; and six sisters, Eliza Taylor, Nannie Pearl Odom, Mary Alice Wyatt, Elizabeth Powe, Bertie Russ and Easter Bell Callands.
Survivors include one son, Freddie Hodnett of Pittsburgh; five daughters, Areline White and Jerline Craft, both of Chatham, Barbara Clements of Altavista, Shelia Booth of Woodbridge and Terri Hodnett of Atlanta; two sisters, Louvenia Callands of Gretna, Betty Sue Cooper of Clearwater, Fla.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Cherrystone Missionary Church in Chatham with the Rev. Floyd Jones officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family wil receive friends at the residence.

Ethel Adkins Jefferson
GRETNA, Va. - Ethel Adkins Jefferson, 82, of 104 North Music St., Colonial Ridge Apt. 404, Gretna, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 8, 1918 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Harrison S. Adkins and Bessie Haskins Adkins. She was married
to Hubert G. Jefferson, who predeceased her. She was a member of Museville Christian Church and a homemaker.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Clark Jefferson.
Survivors include one son, Jimmy Jefferson of Hurt; two daughters, Peggy J. Crawley and Pamela J. Brooks, both of Chatham; 10 granchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. Joseph Glass and the ministers Randle Johnson and Bobby Waters officiating. Interment
will follow in the Museville Christian Church cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Opal Peace Large, 82, of 74 Stokesland Ave., died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at her residence.
Born May 26, 1917, in Claiborne County, Tenn., she was the daughter of John Bruce Peace and Sarah Neely Peace.
She was married
to Alonzo Herbert Large, who predeceased her. Prior to her retirement, she worked for Dan River Inc. She was a member of the Emanuel Church of the Brethren.
Survivors include two sisters, Martha Chavis of Danville and Mallie Jacobs of Tampa, Fla.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leonard Martin officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Dwight Robertson
DANVILLE, Va. - Dwight Stanley Robertson, 36, of 124 Chestnut St., died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 31, 1963, in Danville, he was the son of the late Willie Robertson and Carletta White Robertson, who survives. He served in the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his mother of the residnce, he is survived by one daughter, Keyone A. Ferrel of South Boston; four sisters, Raynell Jordan of Chicago, Judy E. Johnson, Karen Robertson and Terry Robertson, all of Danville; and two brothers, Robin Jordon Robertson of Danville and Leslie Robertson of Troutville.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Griffith officiating. Interment
will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.

Diane Taylor
CHATHAM, Va. - Diane Berger Taylor, 45, of 1473 Mill Creek Road, Chatham, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at her residence.
Born Jan. 13, 1955, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Berger and Nannie Fitzgerald Berger, who survives. She was married
to the late Raleigh Haywood Taylor. She was an LP nurse at Danville Regional Medical Center, and a member of the Antioch Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother of Chatham, she is survived by one daughter, Camesha Jones of the residence; two sons, Anthony Taylor of Danville and Raleigh Taylor of the residence; five sisters, Sally Steptoe of Riverdale, Md., Deloris Rhyne of Bladenburg, Md., Brenda Jackson of Chatham, Sarah Williams of Ocala, Fla., and May Hinnant of Germantown, Md.; four brothers, Robert Berger and Gerald Berger, both of Washington, James Berger of Baltimore and John Berger of Seattle; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. William Tarpley officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.

Isabelle Compton
DANVILLE, Va. - Isabelle Stowe Compton, 73, of 231 S. Ridge St., Apt. 312, Heritage Towers, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at her residence.
Born Jan. 26, 1927, in Dry Fork, she was the daughter of Lessie Shelton Stowe and Irvin O. Stowe, who survives.
She was married
to Curtis G. Compton, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and a charter member of the Calvary Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to her father, she is survived by two sons, Theron "Bernie" Compton, Marlon Y. Compton, both of Danville; two daughters, Melody C. Murphy of Pelham, N.C., Deborah C. Collins of Providence, N.C.; two brothers, Doug Stowe of Dry Fork, I.D. Stowe of Danville; one sister, Ann S. Sigmon of Danville; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her mother and husband, she was predeceased by one brother, Wellons Stowe.

DANVILLE, Va. - Clay Yancy Deshazor, 68, of 518 Fifth St., Danville, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 5, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Allen Deshazor and Virgie Brandon Deshazor. He was married
to Shirley Miller Deshazor, who survives. Prior to his retirement, he worked at Dan River Inc.
In addition to his mother of Ringgold and his wife of the residence, he is survived by four daughters, Pamela Peatross and Lisa Shelton, both of Danville, Cathy Matthews of Manassas, Angela Deshazor of the residence; three sisters, Euolia Culley and Odaris Deshazor, both of Danville, Francis Hunt of Ringgold; five brothers, Harold Deshazor, Curtis Deshazor, Lawrence Deshazor, all of Danville, Ozonia Deshazor and Richard Deshazor, both of Ringgold; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday from the Chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.

DANVILLE, Va. - Eugene William Drew, 82, of 438 Jeanette Drive, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at his residence.
Born Nov. 29, 1917 in Chemung Co., N.Y., he was the son of Ray Drew and Ethel Wood Drew. He was married
to Violet Aherron Drew, who survives.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a land surveyor.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one son, Bill Drew of Merritt Island, Fla.; one daughter, Susan Drew Barnard of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
