Charlie Pruitt
RINGGOLD, Va. - Charlie Willard Pruitt, 78, of 4325 Kentuck Road, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Durham Regional Medical Center.
Born March 30, 1922, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Charlie Pruitt and Martha Terrell Pruitt.
On Dec. 15, 1966, he was married
to Charlotte Tate Pruitt, who survives. He worked at Dan River Inc. as an Overseer until his retirement. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army, having reached the rank of sergeant. He was a former member of the V.F.W. post in Danville before his health failed. He was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Vickie D. Campbell of Ringgold; one step daughter, Debra R. Carter of Penhook; two step sons, Danny Raynor and Steve Raynor, both of Ringgold; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, Presly Pruitt; and two sisters, Garnetta Williams and Florence Pruitt.
A graveside funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Claude Bailey officiating. Graveside military honors will be performed by Dan River American Legion Memorial Post 1097 Honor Guard.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
John Gary Jr.
HALIFAX, Va. - John Gary Jr., 64, of 3184 Meadsville Road, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was born June 1, 1935 in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Gary of Halifax; two sisters, Deloris Slaughter and Mary Covington of Long Island, N.Y.; and four brothers, Julius Gary of Milwaukee, Herman Gary, Stanley Gary and Malcolm Gary, all of Brooklyn.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday from New Zion Baptist Church in Nathalie, with the Rev. Willie Yancey officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Eva Guill
DANVILLE, Va. - Eva Roberts Guill, 83, of 156 Forestdale Drive, Hill Top Gardens Apartments, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Duke Medical Center, Durham, N.C., after nine weeks of declining health in the hospital.
Born May 24, 1916, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of John Roberts and Bessie Moorefield Roberts.
She was married
on Nov. 7, 1941, to Thomas Weldon Guill, who predeceased her on Nov. 5, 1979. She was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church, the Senior Citizens Choir, and the Golden Charms Club. She lived her entire life in Danville, and was retired from F.W. Woolworths Inc.
Survivors include one son, Paul Roberts Guill of Charleston, W.Va.; three sisters, Lizzie R. Tate and Hester R. Hall, both of Danville, and Victoria R. Myers of Gretna; four granddaughters, one great-grandson and one step-great-grandson.
She was predeceased by a brother, Weldon Vaden Guill
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from Laurel Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Chris Griggs officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.

Hubert Knight
MARTINSVILLE, Va. -Hubert Carlisle "Bill" Knight, 77, of 217 Grayleaf Circle, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Martinsville Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 5, 1922 in North Carolina, he was a son of Robert P. Knight and Birdie Jarrett Knight.
He was married
to Madeline Hale Knight, who predeceased him in 1997. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II, and a member of Stone Memorial Christian Church. Prior to his retirement, he was a supervisor at Pulaski Furniture Corp. for 46 years. He was a past member of United Commercial Travelers.
Survivors include one daughter, Deborah Grimes of Martinsville; two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Hillie Knight and Baxton Brown; and one sister, Mary Knight Blackburn.
A graveside service with military rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from Roselawn Burial Park, with Rev. Lawrence Harris and Tim Maness officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Norris Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
Marie Long
BLANCH, Va. - Marie Johnson Long, 61, of 1326 John Long Road, died May 3, 2000, at Chapel Rehabilitation Health Center.
Born Dec. 11, 1938, she was the daughter of Allen Brown Johnson and Ellen Johnson.
She was married
to Sidney Long, who predeceased her.
Survivors include two daughters, Marcel Long of the residence and Brenda McCollum of Mebane, N.C.; three sons, Sidney Andrew Long of the residence, Alfred Long of Cedar Grove, N.C., and the Rev. Dexter Long of Burlington, N.C.; four sisters, Hattie Johnson Newby, Mattie Long and Louise Glass, all of Leasburg, N.C., and Myrtle Richmond of Mebane, N.C.; one brother, Isaac Earl Johnson of Leasburg; and seven grandchildren.

Hortense Midkiff
DANVILLE, Va. - Hortense Warren Midkiff, 85, of 157 Winthrop Drive, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after three months of declining health.
She was born Jan. 19, 1915 in Littleton, N.C.
She was married
to Harry Miles Midkiff, who survives. She lived in the Danville area since 1969, and was retired from Thalhimers Department Store, where she worked in sales. She also worked with her husband at Midkiff Grocery in Chase City. She was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sons, Jerry Stuart Midkiff and Bill Gene Midkiff.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Scott Holcomb-McLain officiating.

Bennie Oliver
SUTHERLIN, Va. - Bennie David Oliver, 72, of 724 Olivers Lane, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 4, 1927 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Oscar Oliver and Sallie Glass Oliver.
He was employed with Dan River Inc. for many years.
In addition to his father, he is survived by one daughter, Maryland Dyke of Roanoke; one sister, Gloria Ordgen of Baxley, Ga.; three brothers, Lawrence Oliver of Danville, Joe Oliver of Sutherlin and John Oscar Oliver Jr. of Washington; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home, with Rev. Ralph Cypress officiating. Interment
will follow in Floral Hills Memory Garden.

Otis Plummer
DANVILLE, Va. - Otis Plummer, 64, formerly of Glenwood section, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 9, 1935 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Jack Plummer and Earline Williams Plummer.
He was married
to Ola Mae White Plummer, who predeceased him. He was a member of East New Hope Baptist Church, and prior to his retirement, worked for the Danville Sanitation Department.
Survivors include a daughter, Naomi Plummer of Danville, and one grandchild.

will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Randolph Andrews
BLAIRS, Va. - Randolph Carson "Randy" Andrews, 53, of Route 29, died April 29, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 13, 1946 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charlie Donald Andrews and Mary East Andrews. He was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
Randy was owner and operator of Andrew's Auto Sales in Blairs, and Andrew's Paint and Body Shop.
Survivors include three sons, Donald Andrews of Danville, Tony Andrews of Pelham, N.C. and William King of Danville; one daughter, Lisa A. Glore of Cornelia, Ga.; a devoted friend, Patricia Francis of Blairs; three brothers, J.T. Andrews of Greensboro, N.C., Wayne Andrews of Halifax and Ralph Andrews of Blairs; four sisters, Joan Crowder of Halifax, Raye Henderson of Vernon Hill, Peggy Walker and Ruby Betterton, both of South Boston; and eight grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Ollis Andrews and one sister, Alease Stephens.
A funeral was held at 2 p.m. Monday from Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Interment
will follow in Mt. Vernon Baptist Church cemetery.

Dorothy Crane
DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy Love Allen Crane, 77, of 411 Third Ave., died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 5, 1922 in Callands, she was a daughter of Frank James Allen and Rainey Loves Eanes Allen.
She was married
on Feb. 12, 1969, to Junior Whitt Crane, who survives. She was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Will Doolin, on Dec. 26, 1965; and one sister, Frances Ingram.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by three sons, Johnny A. Doolin of Danville, James Willie Doolin of Montgomery, Ala. and David F. Crane of Dry Fork; two daughters, Joy Doolin of Danville and Judy C. Robertson of Chatham; one brother, James D. Allen of Norfolk; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from Highland Burial Park, with Rev. John Meadows officiating.

Cora Edwards
DANVILLE, Va. - Cora Hines Edwards, age 86, of East Gretna Road, died May 5 at Autumn Care of Altavista.
Born Aug. 26, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Millard Hines and Lou Shields Hines.
She was predeceased by her husband, Willie Bennett Edwards and a son, Ray Bennett Edwards. She was the member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church and a home maker.
She is survived by three sons, Alvin Edwards of Blandensburg, Md., George Edwards of Blandensburg, Md., and Ralph Edwards of Gretna; two foster sons, Bobby Shelton of Hurt and Billy Shelton of Charleston, S.C.; one brother, John Henry Hines of Danville; three sisters, Frances Bivens of Danville, Evelyn Bailess of Danville and Alene Nebb of Chesapeake; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Andrews United Methodist Church by the Rev. R.G. Rowland and Rev. Robert Newcomb. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, Ralph Edwards, 6348 Deer View Road, Gretna.
