Armstead Johnson Jr.
WASHINGTON - Armstead Johnson Jr., 65, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Holy Cross Hospital, Maryland, after a lengthy illness.
Born Jan. 25, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Armstead H. and Julia Garrett Johnson.
He was married
to Alenia Mae Smith Johnson, who predeceased him Nov. 1, 1999. He spent his early years in the Danville-Pittsylvania County area and was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Providence, N.C. He was a graduate of Southside High School and later served in the U.S. Army. Before his retirement, he was employed with the Metro Transit System in Washington.
Survivors include one son, Derek Terrell Johnson of Washington; five sisters, Clara Monroe of Norfolk, Barbara Mark of St. Petersburg, Fla., Virginia Davis of Washington, and Ethel Cannon and Shirley Dixon, both of Danville; one brother, Willard Clifton Johnson, of Danville; and two grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Detra Alenia Johnson; a brother, William H. Johnson, and a sister, Mary Johnson Watkins.
A funeral will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at J.B. Jenkins Funeral Home, Landover, Md.
A viewing will be held at 11 a.m., prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Virginia Davis, 1268 Owen Place, Washington.
Hobson Towler Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Hobson Richard Towler Sr., 73, of 4781 Old Richmond Road, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at his residence.
Born June 6, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Sam Henry Towler and Pearl Carter Towler.
He was married
to Arnell Wimbush Towler, who survives. He was a member of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. He was also an active member of the New Sandy Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Ardena Towler Bigelow and Vanessa Towler Davis, both of Danville; four sons, Hobson R. Towler Jr., Clifton Towler and David Towler, all of Danville, and James Towler of Keeling; two sisters, Dorothy King of Danville and Pearl Drayton of Englewood, N.J.; two brothers, Clarence Towler of Danville and Maxwell Towler of Arlington, several grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the New Sandy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Reid officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Samuel Watts Sr.
HALIFAX, Va. - Samuel Durell Watts Sr., 89, of 3143 Grubby Road died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at The Woodview.
Born Sept. 9, 1910, in Halifax County, he was a son of Samuel Lee Watts and Maggie Roby Watts.
He was married
to Frances Seamster Watts, who survives. He was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon for many years. He was a retired farmer.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include one son, Samuel Durell "Sam" Watts Jr. of Halifax; one sister, Sadie Cook of Newport News; one brother, Rev. C.H. Watts of Clover; one granddaughter, and one great-grandchild.
A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Providence Presbyterian Church cemetery, Nathalie, with the Rev. Everette Hellmuth officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Iris Wilkerson
DANVILLE, Va. - Iris Hutchinson Wilkerson, 75, of 32 Old Halifax Road, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at her residence after four months of declining health.
Born Aug. 16, 1924, in Fries, she was the daughter of Walter R. Hutchinson Sr. and Blanche Roberts Hutchinson.
She was married
to Charlie B. Wilkerson, who predeceased her Oct. 27, 1995. She had lived most of her life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. She was employed by Dan River Inc. as a spinner in the #4 Spin of the Schoolfield Division for a number of years until her retirement due to health reasons. She was an active member of State Line Baptist Church for more that 20 years, where she was a member of the Dependable Sunday Class and a nursery worker. She was also a member of the Thursday Afternoon Delight Bowling League.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry Wayne Wilkerson and Ronnie Lee Wilkerson, both of Danville; two brothers, Carlon R. Hutchinson and Walter Ray Hutchinson Jr., both of Danville; four sisters, Doris H. Hankins and Lois H. Moss, both of Danville, Edith H. Hancock of Pelham, N.C. and Wanda H. Doss of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Judy Ann Wilkerson Pruitt.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at State Line Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Wallace and the Rev. Fred Cox officiating. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence.
Ruby Fitzgerald
CHATHAM, Va. - Ruby Barksdale Fitzgerald, 70, of Oxon Hill, Md., and formerly of Chatham, died Thursday, May 11, 2000, in Southern Maryland Hospital, Clinton, Md.
Born March 12, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Thomas Barksdale and Margaret Grasty Barksdale.
She was married
to Toy Fitzgerald Jr., who predeceased her. She was a member of Cherrystone Baptist Church, and prior to her retirement, was a bus driver for the Pittsylvania County school system.
Survivors include three daughters, Bernice F. Waller of Oxon Hill, Md., Alease Fitzgerald of Washington, and Queen Ester Fitzgerald of Danville; two sons, Calvin Fitzgerald of Danville and Marion Fitzgerald of Germany; two sisters, Mildred Haskins of Virginia Beach and Sarah Hamm of Danville; four brothers, William Henry Barksdale of Roselle, N.J., Roosevelt Barksdale of Elizabeth City, N.J., Stonewall Barksdale of Washington and Herman Barksdale of Java; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was also predeceased by one son, Raymond Fitzgerald; one sister, Mary Sue Cook, and four brothers, Will, Fletcher, George and Woodrow Barksdale.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cherrystone Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd Jones officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.

Jack Haskins
MILWAUKEE - Jack Haskins, 64, of 3334 West Highland Blvd., Apt. 1017, and formerly of Pittsylvania County died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, in the Heart Land of Milwaukee Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 17, 1935, in Halifax County, he was the son of Eddie T. Haskins and Corine Stone Haskins.
He was employed by the Chrysler Corporation of Wisconsin.
Survivors include four daughters, Jacqueline Haskins Bennett of Orlando, Fla., Jearline Whit of Phoenix, and Edna Haskins and Maxine Haskins, both of New Castle, Del.; two sons, Michael Haskins of Wilmington, Del. and Maxie Haskins of New Castle, Del.; one sister, Nannie Evelyn Gallman of Washington; four brothers, Randolph and Rufus Haskins, both of New Castle, Del., Richard Haskins of Rockford, Ill. and Moral Stone of Philadelphia.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Bennie "B.T." and Archie Haskins.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Paul Outreach Church, Chatham, with Bishop Walter Anderson officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Betty Elaine Steube, 49, of 1117 Watkins Ave., died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 15, 1950, in South Boston, she was the daughter of George Ernest Steube and Myrtle Saunders Steube, both of whom survive.
She was a member of McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents of South Boston, survivors include two sisters, Mavis S. Phillips of South Boston and Joan S. Todd of Roanoke.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Setliff and the Rev. Charles Wickham officiating. Interment
will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.

James Bosman
DANVILLE, Va. - James Andrew Bosman, 71, of 348 Wendell Scott Drive, died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 7, 1928 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Paul E. Bosman and Mary Ingram, who survives.
He was married
to Letitia H. Bosman, who predeceased him. He later married
Cora Sawyers Bosman, who survives. He was employed at Dan River Mills for many years and was a TV repairman. He was also the owner and operator of Bosman's Coach. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Jones Chapel Baptist Church, where he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, and was a member of the Male Chorus and the Usher Board. He was the secretary of Murdock Lodge #163, Associate Patron Lydia Chapter #74 Order of the Eastern Star, Bus Ministries, and operated Bosman's Medicaid Transportation Service.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Danville, he is survived by one daughter, Cleatis Swanson of Danville; three sons, Wayne Bosman, Terry Bosman and James L. Bosman, all of Danville; three sisters, Ruth Lea, Velma Ingram and Queen Daily, all of Danville; and seven grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday from Jones Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Hayes McConnell officiating. Interment
with military rites will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Lizzie Brown
DANVILLE, Va. - Lizzie Witcher Brown, 84, of Abingdon Place and formerly of Chatham, died Thursday at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 26, 1916 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Witcher and Hannah Reynolds Witcher.
She was married
to Grady Brown, who predeceased her. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and a homemaker.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Geneva B. Clement; two sons, Ernest and Onyx Brown; two sisters, Janie Shelton and Nannie Bell Witcher; and two brothers, John Jonah Witcher and Willie Witcher.
Survivors include one daughter, Gladys Mease of Chatham; two sons, Ulyless Eugene Brown of Rocky Mount and Sterling Earnest Brown of Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. Lenard Sterling of Chatham and Addie Lee Pannell of Sandy Level; and one brother, Dan Witcher of Chatham.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter J. Coles officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
