DANVILLE, Va. - Mattie McLaughlin Thomas, 87, of 228 Wilkerson Road, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 10, 1912 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Wade McLaughlin and Fannie King McLaughlin.
She was married
to Raymond Thomas, and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include six daughters, Jealier Fitzgerald of Ringgold, Virginia McCain of New York City, Bernice Watkins and Aubrey Green, both of Rochester, N.Y., Barbara Jeffries of Milton, N.C., Dorothy Yates of Union City, Calif., and Jeanette Thomas of Amherst, N.Y.; four sons, Raymond Thomas, Lawrence Thomas and Wade Leon Thomas, all of Danville and Eugene Thomas of Bland, Va.; one sister, the Rev. Laura Tarpley of Danville; three brothers, Thomas McLaughlin, Henry McLaughlin and Patrick McLaughlin, all of Danville; 26 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from Bethel Baptist Church, with Rev. Dr. Thomas Johnson Sr. officiating. Interment
will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at L.H. Brooks & Bros. Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
Dorsey Williamson
DANVILLE, Va. - Dorsey Williamson died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 24, 1917 in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Walter Williams and Ellen Henderson.
He was married
to Mary Emma Williamson, who predeceased him. He was a construction worker and a member of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, the Rev. Mary Dodd and Ruby Williamson, both of Reidsville, N.C.; four sons, Lewis Williamson and Fletcher Williamson, both of Danville, Frankie Williams of Maryland and Dorsey Williamson of Alexandria; 22 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the home of Judy Totten, 939 Paxton Street.

Irvin Weatherford Anderson
DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Irvin Weatherford Anderson of 308 Hampton Drive, Danville, Va. died May 15, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center at 81 years of age. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, 409 Arnett Blvd., Danville, Va., where she was a member of the Conerly Bible Class and financial secretary of the church for 27 years.
Mrs. Irvin Weatherford Anderson is survived by: her husband, Hunter C. Anderson of Danville, three sons, Andrew James Anderson of Crozet, Robert Hunter Anderson of Vernon Hill, William Tucker Anderson of Roanoke and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Andrew James Weatherford, her mother, Elizabeth Salome Pollard Weatherford and one sister Elizabeth Weatherford Matthews.
She was born in Halifax County, Va. on December 25, 1918. A 1938 graduate of Averett College, Mrs. Anderson taught school four years in Halifax County.
Mrs. Anderson was devoted to her family and church. She lived life with patience and good humor and she is remembered for her service to family and community.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541.
Funeral services for Mrs. Irvin Weatherford Anderson will be held Thursday, May 18, 2000 at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. R. Levi Stroud, Jr. conducting the service. Burial will take place in the Asbury United Methodist Church cemetery in Halifax County at 3:00 p.m.
The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service Thursday from 1:00 until 1:30 p.m.

Elizabeth Carper
DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Ferrell Carper, 85, of 6321 Riverside Drive, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at Stratford Health Care Center, after two weeks of declining health and a one-day stay at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 14, 1914 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Samuel Ferrell and Nolie McGregor Ferrell.
On Nov. 19, 1943, she was married
to Joseph Woodrow Carper, who survives. She lived her entire life in Pittsylvania County, where she was a homemaker.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by one son, J. Ray Carper of Danville; one daughter, Carolyn Leigh Carper of Danville; and one sister, Vivian F. Brammer of Danville.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one brother, Burton Ferrell.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. W.L. Wade officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of J. Ray Carper, 585 Woodrow Lane, Danville.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Christine Walker Cole, 86, of 3053 Wolf Trap Road, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at a descendant's residence.
Born Nov. 23, 1913 in Patrick County, she was the daughter of Hammett Y. Walker and Hilda Hubbard Walker.
She was married
to Henry Oscar Cole, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Toby Christopher Cole of Durham, N.C.; four sisters, Pearle W. Bobrowiecki of Fairhaven, Mass., Marcella W. Hayes of Solomons, Md., Nancy W. Williams of Miami Shores, Fla. and Hilda W. Williamson of Alton; and two granddaughters.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by one son, Henry Shady Cole.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Ann Davidson officiating.

James Jett
DANVILLE, Va. - James Samuel Jett, 82, of Washington, died Friday, May 12, 2000, in the Washington Hospital Center.
Born July 16, 1918 in Danville, he was the son of Laura and Ernest Jett. After his parents' deaths, he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Rev. Samuel and Missy Jones.
He was educated in the Danville Public School System and was a mail handler with the Washington Terminal for 26 years. He was married
to Ethel Posey Jett, who predeceased him, and later married
Alberta Davenport Jett, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two step-sons, Dupree Davenport Jr. and David Davenport; two sisters, Catherine Artis and Annabelle White, both of Danville; and one brother, John Barkley.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from Bethel Way of the Cross Church. Interment
will follow at St. Matthews Baptist Church.
A viewing will be held one hour prior to the funeral service.

Lera Mae McGuire
DANVILLE, Va. - Lera Mae Turner McGuire, 74, of 29 Elizabeth St., died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after one year of declining health.
Born June 23, 1925 in Henry County, she was the daughter of Ura Turner and Eula Anna Chaney Turner.
She was married
to Millard Walker McGuire, who survives. She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker and a member of Ferry Road Friends Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by three sons, Leroy Simms of Danville, Harold Wayne Simms of Chatham and Ronnie Lee McGuire Sr. of Callands; one step-son, Ralph Henry McGuire of Alabama; one daughter, Edna McGuire Street of Pelham, N.C.; one sister, Nannie Love of Bassett; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Linwood Hairfield, the Rev. Ronald Graham and the Rev. Paul Ray officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Irene Moran
CASCADE, Va. - Irene Chitwood Moran, 79, of 5622 Whispering Pines Road, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Born June 25, 1920 in Banks County, Ga., she was the daughter of Charlie Chitwood and Dora Evans Chitwood.
She was married
to Buford Culver Moran, who predeceased her on July 21, 1996. She spent most of her life in Danville, where she worked at Dan River, Inc. She was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Moran Saunders of Cascade and Barbara Ann Jones of Sutherlin; two sons, Charlie A. Moran of Ringgold and Edward C. Chitwood of Danville; ten grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one brother, Gene Chitwood.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Mark J. Moore officiating.

Mary Satterfield
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Mary Lena Norman Satterfield, 79, of 2103 Vaughan St., died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 6, 1920 in South Boston, she was the daughter of W.W. Norman and Lena Rye Norman.
She was married
to James Edward Satterfield, who predeceased her. She was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church, the W.M.U. and the Leadership Committee of the Dan River Baptist W.M.U. She worked with the Bread Ministry at Ash Avenue Baptist and was a volunteer for the Good Samaritan. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include three daughters, Harriette S. Lowery of Bailey, N.C., Joan S. Schrock of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Mary Carol S. Crabtree of South Boston; two sons, Norman Satterfield of Bedford and Brad Satterfield of South Boston; five sisters, Gladys N. Cavanaugh, Elizabeth N. Thaxton and Virginia N. Patterson, all of South Boston, Sara N. Gibson of Pulaski, Nancy N. Henderson of Halifax; two brothers, Walter Norman of Waverly and Bruce Norman of South Boston; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 7 p.m. Friday from Ash Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. John Fariss officiating. Interment
will follow in Oak Ridge cemetery.

Ralph "Sonny" Wall
DANVILLE, Va. - Ralph Clinton "Sonny" Wall, 64, of 110 Brantley Place, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at his residence.
Born March 13, 1936 in Bristol, Tenn., he was the son of Fred Dale Wall and Laura Call Wall.
He was married
to Peggy Ann Sanders Wall, who survives. He moved to the Danville area in 1964 where he was employed with the Danville School System as a teacher at George Washington High School. He was a football coach at GW for 33 years, before retiring in 1997. He served as head coach for two seasons.
He graduated from Emory and Henry, where he received a bachelor of arts degree. He also attended the University of Kentucky and received his master of education degree at William and Mary. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School for the Wesley Class for 30 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Otto Dale Wall of Tarpon Springs, Fla. and Louis Michael Wall of Wilmington, N.C.; and two brothers, William L. Wall of Palmyra and Don P. Wall of Glade Spring.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, from Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Levi Stroud Jr. and the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Rose cemetery in Saltville, Va., with D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
