SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Christine Walker Cole, 86, of 3053 Wolf Trap Road, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at her residence.
Born Nov. 23, 1913 in Patrick County, she was the daughter of Hammett Y. Walker and Hilda Hubbard Walker.
She was married
to Henry Oscar Cole, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Toby Christopher Cole of Durham, N.C.; four sisters, Pearle W. Bobrowiecki of Fairhaven, Mass., Marcella W. Hayes of Solomons, Md., Nancy W. Williams of Miami Shores, Fla. and Hilda W. Williamson of Alton; and two granddaughters.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by one son, Henry Shandy Cole.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Ann Davidson officiating.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Disa Jackson
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Disa Reed Jackson, 93, of 621 Berry Hill Road, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at the Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born June 13, 1906 in Sparta, N.C., she was the daughter of James Allen Reed and Ally Phare Sturgill Reed.
She was married
to Charlie Marshall Jackson, who predeceased her April 27, 1984. She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was an employee of Dan River, Inc. until her retirement. She was a member of the First Church of the Brethren, and had resided in Berry Hill Nursing Home since October 1999.
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Jackson Sutherland of Danville; two sisters, Norma Smith of Danville and Mabel Nelson of Pelham, N.C.; one grandson and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Stephen Smith officiating. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and at other times at 1010 Brandon Court in the Mount Hermon community.
Lera Mae McGuire
DANVILLE, Va. - Lera Mae Turner McGuire, 74, of 29 Elizabeth St., died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after one year of declining health.
Born June 23, 1925 in Henry County, she was the daughter of Ura Turner and Eula Anna Chaney Turner.
She was married
to Millard Walker McGuire, who survives. She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker and a member of Ferry Road Friends Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by three sons, Leroy Simms of Danville, Harold Wayne Simms of Chatham and Ronnie Lee McGuire Sr. of Callands; one step-son, Ralph Henry McGuire of Alabama; one daughter, Edna McGuire Street of Pelham, N.C.; one sister, Nannie Love of Bassett; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Linwood Hairfield, the Rev. Ronald Graham and the Rev. Paul Ray officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Irene Moran
CASCADE, Va. - Irene Chitwood Moran, 79, of 5622 Whispering Pines Road, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Born June 25, 1920 in Banks County, Ga., she was the daughter of Charlie Chitwood and Dora Evans Chitwood.
She was married
to Buford Culver Moran, who predeceased her on July 21, 1996. She spent most of her life in Danville, where she worked at Dan River, Inc. She was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Moran Saunders of Cascade and Barbara Ann Jones of Sutherlin; two sons, Charlie A. Moran of Ringgold and Edward C. Chitwood of Danville; ten grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one brother, Gene Chitwood.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Mark J. Moore officiating.

James "Bob" Priest
SCOTTSBURG, Va. - James Robert "Bob" Priest, 79, of 1145 Scottsburg Road, died May 18, 2000, at his residence.
Born Oct. 10, 1920 in Halifax County, he was the son of Edward Norvel Priest and Florence Loomis Priest.
He was married
to Christine Snead Priest, who survives. He was a member of Scottsburg Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of Scottsburg, he is survived by one son, Dr. James H. Priest of Vernon Hill; one sister, Elizabeth Priest Newbill of South Boston; and three grandsons.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from Scottsburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Richards and the Rev. Michael Phillips officiating. Interment
will follow in Oakland cemetery.

Karen Short
SOUTH HILL, Va. - Karen Faye Short, 32, of 2118 St. Johns Church Road, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, in Duke University Medical Center.
Born March 13, 1968 in South Boston, she was the daughter of Carolyn Eades McCann and the stepdaughter of Ray McCann.
She was an employee of Virginia Marble Co.
In addition to her mother and stepfather, she is survived by her fiance, David Austin of South Hill; and her grandfather, Henry Eades of Altavista.
She was predeceased by her grandmother, Lucy Myrtle Eades.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Sidney Wade officiating. Interment
will follow in the Callahan Family cemetery.

James Starling
CHATHAM, Va. - James Henry Starling, 56, of 320 Hodnetts Mill Road, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000. in R.J. Reynolds Hospital, Stuart.
Born Nov. 16, 1943 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Willie and Blanch Webb Starling.
He was married
to Janice Cobb Starling, who survives. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of Danville, he is survived by four brothers, Willie Mitchell Starling of Richmond, Charlie J. Starling of Hyattsville, Md., Jack O. Starling of Chatham and Calvin L. Starling of Dry Fork; and five sisters, Daisy Farrish of Washington, Vernell Goggins of Chatham, Georgie F. Chaney of Sutherlin, Mary L. Starling of Callands and Betty J. Jones of Danville.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday from Howerton Funeral Home with Bishop Walter J. Anderson officiating. Interment
will follow in Cherrystone Church cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 3-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at other times at the residence.
Julius Hand
PRINCETON, W.Va. - Julius Edgar Hand, 103, of Rt. 3, Box 338, died Friday, May 19, 2000, at his residence.
Born March 26, 1897 in Johnson County, Tenn., he was the son of James T. and Josephine Parrish Hand.
He was married
to Anna Jane Neely Hand, who predeceased him, and later married
Martha Taylor Hand, who survives.
He was a retired mechanic for Dan River Mills and an independent contractor in Princeton.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War I.
He was a member of Johnston Chapel Baptist Church.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was predeceased by one son, Charles Hand; one daughter, Betty Bradley; two brothers and one sister.
In addition to his second wife of Princeton, he is survived by four daughters, Mary Whittaker and Faye Fox, both of Princeton, Christine Bland of Leesburg, Fla. and Madeline Bailey of Edgewood, N.M.; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at George W. Seaver Chapel, Princeton, with the Rev. Jimmie Jones officiating. Interment
will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service on Sunday.

HALIFAX, Va. - Mary Lovelace Holt, 78, of 3046 Cowford Road, died May 19, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 1, 1922 in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Daniel L. Lovelace and Alice Reeves Lovelace.
She was a member of Dan River Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Margaret L. Costner of Greensboro, N.C., Anne L. Newton of Richmond and Barbara L. Saunders of Halifax; and one brother, Daniel L. "Pete" Lovelace of Halifax.
A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday from Dan River Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Brewer officiating.
