Willie Bud Johnson
DANVILLE, Va. - Willie Bud Johnson, 92, of 995 Piney Forest Road, Danville, died Friday, May 19, 2000, at 5:05 a.m. at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born November 24, 1907 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Giles Western Johnson and Nannie Alice Richardson Johnson.
On August 21, 1927, he was married
to Ulver Canaday Johnson, who predeceased him. Mr. Johnson was the last survivor of sixteen children.
He was a member of Old Mill Primitive Baptist Church.
He retired from Dan River, Inc. after forty years with the Hy-Dro Plant, was owner and operator of Johnson Trailer Park and was known as the Honey Man Beekeeper.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Johnson was predeceased by a grandson, David Johnson, Jr.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty J. Johnson of Danville; one son and daughter-in-law, David W. and Peggy Johnson of Blairs; one grandson, Dwayne Johnson of Keeling; and two great-grandsons, Hunter Johnson of Blairs and Zach Turner of Keeling.
A funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 21, from Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church, with Elder Danny Parker officiating.
Interment will follow in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at the son's residence, 4617 Mount View Road.
Memorial contributions may be made to Blairs Fire and Rescue.
Mary Walker
SANDY LEVEL, Va. - Mary Catherine Hammock Walker, 93, died Friday, May 19, 2000, at the Stratford House.
Born Sept. 28, 1906, she was the daughter of Nathaniel Hammock and Lessie Myers Hammock.
She was married
to Rebel Keen Walker, who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and a charter member of Sandy Level Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by four sons, Eugene Walker, Peg Walker, Willard Walker and Archie Walker.
Survivors include two sons, Rusty Walker of Sandy Level and Gibbie Walker of Pelham, N.C.; five daughters, Blanche Shelton of Hurt, Christine Willis of Martinsville, Minnie Murphy of Naples, Fla., Lottie Fulp of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Kathy Bolling of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four sisters, Mildred Adkins and Sarah Philpott, both of Danville, and Isabelle Hodges and Sally Walker, both of Rocky Mount; 19 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

Marsha Lee Altice
DANVILLE, Va. Marsha Lee Altice expired on May 20, 2000 at her residence due to a brief illness. She was born November 6, 1951 in Danville, Virginia. She was the daughter of Nancye S. Altice and the late Jack Langston Altice. She was the granddaughter of the late Otie Linwood Scruggs, Mamie Farthing Scruggs, and Jake and Bessie Altice.
She graduated from Tunstall High School in 1970 and Stratford College in 1974. She taught Honors English and Journalism at Tunstall High School. While residing in Raleigh, N.C. she taught Honors English and Journalism at Millbrook High School.
During her career, she was the Advisor of the Year Book Staff, Cheerleading Sponsor and winner of the Wake County "Teacher of the Year." She was named Miss Wheelchair Virginia, tutored for the Reading Program at Goodwill Industries, President of the Handicap Shag Club of Myrtle Beach South Carolina, and served on the Executive Committee for the Danville Harvest Jubilee and River City Strut.
Marsha lived most of her life at 213 Ripley Drive Danville, Virginia. Wonderful summers were spent with her mother and friends at Ocean Drive, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She attended Christ the King Lutheran Church Danville, Virginia. She is survived by her mother, Nancye S. Altice of the residence.
Visitation will be Sunday at Townes Funeral Home from 7:30 to 9:00 P.M.. A memorial service will be conducted by the Reverand Jim Keinfelter on Monday at Townes Memorial Chapel at 2:00 P.M.

Ruby Edmonds
BRONX, N.Y. Ruby Edmonds, 74, of 510 Rosedale Ave., died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at her residence.
Born Jan. 17, 1926, in Ringgold, Va., she was a daughter of Albert and Pearl Wright.
She attended John M. Langston High School and Nursing School in New York.
Survivors include one son, Walter Wright of Bronx; one brother, James T. Wright of Bronx; two sisters, Thelma Adams and Fannie McCain, both of Danville, Va.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will follow in Oak Hill cemetery. Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Julius Hand
PRINCETON, W.Va. - Julius Edgar Hand, 103, of Rt. 3, Box 338, died Friday, May 19, 2000, at his residence.
Born March 26, 1897 in Johnson County, Tenn., he was the son of James T. and Josephine Parrish Hand.
He was married
to Anna Jane Neely Hand, who predeceased him, and later married
Martha Taylor Hand, who survives. He was a retired mechanic for Dan River Mills and an independent contractor in Princeton. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War I. He was a member of Johnston Chapel Baptist Church. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was predeceased by one son, Charles Hand; one daughter, Betty Bradley; two brothers and one sister.
In addition to his second wife of Princeton, he is survived by four daughters, Mary Whittaker and Faye Fox, both of Princeton, Christine Bland of Leesburg, Fla. and Madeline Bailey of Edgewood, N.M.; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at George W. Seaver Chapel, Princeton, with the Rev. Jimmie Jones officiating. Interment
will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service on Sunday.
Howard W. Hudson
DANVILLE, Va. - Howard W. Hudson, formerly of West Main Street, died Saturday, May 20, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond.
Mr. Hudson was born in Danville on August 5, 1913 the son of Charles Hudson and Claudia Pigg Hudson.
He was married
to Mary Pascucci Hudson who predeceased him on June 6, 1992.
Mr. Hudson worked for over 30 years for Danville Hardware prior to its closing and worked at Link Watson until his retirement. Mr. Hudson moved from Danville and resided for 4 years in Richmond and was currently living at the Hermitage Methodist Home. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for over 50 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #6143.
Mr. Hudson is survived by one daughter, Cecelia Hudson Stowe and her husband Donald Stowe of Glen Allen, Virginia; and one graddaughter, Tiffany Stowe of Glenn Allen, Virginia.
He was predeceased by three brothers, William Hudson, Ed Hudson and Walter Hudson, and two sisters, Frances McGee and Doris Abernathy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, May 22, 2000, 11:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Rev. Father Dario Saniel will be conducting the services. Entombment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
A Prayer service will be held on Sunday, May 21, 2000, 7:00 P.M. at Townes Memorial Chapel followed by the family receiving friends until 8:30 P.M. Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Harold Eddie Bennett, Sr.
GRETNA, Va. Harold Eddie Bennett, Sr., age 74, of 380 Peoples Supply Road, Gretna died Saturday, May 20, 2000, at his residence.
Born January 23, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late John Eddie Bennett and Ava Graves Bennett. Mr. Bennett was predeceased by a son, Eddie Bennett, Jr., two brothers, Frank Bennett and Edward Bennett, two sisters, Iris Price and Ava Mae Kelley. He was a retired engineer with Norfolk and Southern Railroad, a member of Anderson United Methodist Church and a member of Anderson Masonic Lodge # 258 A.F. & A.M.
He is survived by his wife, Sammie Short Bennett of the residence; a son, David Bennett of Locust Grove; a daughter, Diane Moon of Gretna; a brother, Floyd Bennett of Gretna; a sister, Helen Cocke of Gretna; 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2000 at Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church by Dr. Edward Wright. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
Masonic rites by Anderson Lodge #258 A.F. & A.M. will be held 7 p.m. Monday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends immediately after the service until 8:30 p.m. and other times at the residence 380 Peoples Road, Gretna.

Edna Carter
HALIFAX, Va. - Edna Booker Hall Carter, 88, of 2228 Howard P. Anderson Road, died May 22, 2000, at the Woodview.
Born Jan. 27, 1912 in Halifax, she was the daughter of William Bailey Hall and Betty Olds Hall.
She was married
to Gilbert Thomas Hall, who predeceased her. She was a member of Winns Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara C. Helms of Villa Rica, Ga. and Cindy C. Johnson of Clarksville; three sons, Jerry T. Carter and Leo B. Carter, both of Church Road and William L. Carter of Halifax; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. from Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Welch officiating. Interment
will follow in Winns Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home.
William Clark
DRY FORK, Va. - William Norman Clark, 63, of 749 F.C. Beverly Road, died May 21, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after nine years of declining health and a five-week stay in the hospital.
Born Dec. 21, 1936, he was the son of Norman A. Korth and Emma Schmidt Korth.
Prior to his retirement, he worked as a dock master. He moved to Danville from Tennessee in January. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Kristy Boyd of Dry Fork and Vicki White of Vista, Calif.; four sons, William N. Korth Jr. of Greensboro, N.C., Daniel Wayne Clark of California, Scott A. Clark and George A. Clark, both of Johnson City, Tenn.; one brother, David O. Korth of Helena, Mont.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Schoolfield Baptist Church with the Rev. David Turbyfill officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
