Jack Emerson Dalton
COLLINSVILLE, Va. - Jack Emerson Dalton, 72, of 206 Patsy Avenue died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at the Memorial Hospital, Martinsville.
Born Nov. 4, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Harry Dalton and Ora McDaniel Dalton. His stepmother was Edith Dalton of Axton, Va.
He was married
to Lois Boothe Dalton, who survives. He was a retired electrician with E.I. for DuPont Inc. for 35 years.
He was a vetran of the U.S. Navy and member of First Baptist Church.
Dalton represented the Collinsville District of the Henry County Board of Supervisors for almost 27 years.
He was elected president of the Virginia Association of Counties in 1982 and had been a member of the association's executive board since 1986. Dalton served as second vice-president and first vice-president of the association.
In 1982, he was named to the State Local Government Advisory Council by then Governor Charles Robb.
He served on several state legislative committees and was named by Gov. Robb and later by former Gov. Gerald Baliles to the Local Government Advisory Council, a round-table of local officials from around the state.
A retired DuPont employee who also ran an orchard business, Dalton attended Brosville High School and was a member of the Collinsville Lions Club, the Elks and the Virginia Horticulture Society. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Collinsville, Va.
Dalton was elected chairman of the board of supervisors in 1980.
In a 1989 interview, he said he was most proud of the work accomplished during the first few years on the board. That included the construction of a new jail; the start of plans for the County Administration Building; constructon of Bassett High School; the establishment of a library board and central accounting system; creation of the parks and recreation department; and the passage of a subdivision ordinance, the county's first move toward controlled growth.
Other accomplishments during his tenure included the construction of two other schools - Magna Vista and Axton Middle - and several ordinances intended to clean up the county and foster its growth and economic health. He also cited the approval and construction of the county landfill. In addition, he was instrumental in the formation of the county's Public Service Authority.
In addition to his stepmother of Axton and his wife of the residence, survivors include one step-daughter, Linda Chaney Cassell of Bassett; two step-sons, Otis Chaney and Stanley Chaney, both of Bassett; one brother, Daniel Tracy "Paul" Dalton of Danville; three half-brothers, Clyde Dalton and Harold Dalton, both of Danville, and Ray Dalton of Axton; three sisters, Evelyn Dalton Lemons of Martinsville, Inez Dalton Robertson of Charlottesville, and Beulah Dalton Holmes of Reidsville, N.C.; two half-sisters, Gay Kiely of Danville and Bobbie Herndon of Broswell; five step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at the First Baptist Church of Collinsville with Dr. Calvin Rains, Minister Lawrence Harris, and Rev. Bob Edwards officiating. Entombment will be in Roselawn Abbey. Eulogy by Sid Clower.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Collinsville and other times at the residence.

Willie Glasscock Griffin
BUFFALO JUNCTION, Va. - Mrs. Willie Glasscock Griffin, 94, widower of Taylor Floyd Griffin, died May 24, 2000 at The Woodview Nursing Home in South Boston.
Born on September 2, 1905, she is a native of the Buffalo Springs Community and was the daughter of the late James Bailey and Emma Mills Glasscock. Mrs. Griffin and her husband were joined in marriage on December 19, 1923 at which time she began her life as a loving wife, mother and homemaker. Mr. and Mrs. Griffin shared over 60 years of love and happiness together until his time of death in June of 1984. Services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, May 26, 2000 at the Buffalo Baptist Church with interment following in Gravel Hill cemetery. Rev. Rodney Baker and Rev. John Bohannon will officiate. Loving survivors are three daughters: Glenna G. Nunn of Clarksville; Helen G. Blanks of Buffalo Jct.; Jean G. Daniel also of Buffalo Jct.; a son, Raymond Griffin of Clarksville; 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Mrs. Griffin was predeceased by a daughter, Nell Griffin Savarese. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2000 at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home in Clarksville.
Ovionn Harper
DANVILLE, Va. - Ovionn Tyvoria Harper died Monday, May 22, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 22, 2000, she was the daughter of Letora Rochelle Harper, who survives.
In addition to her mother, survivors include one sister, Tishedoan Harper and one brother, Timothy Pounds.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park.

Martha Hunt
ALTAVISTA, Va. - Martha Ann Pannell Hunt, 61, of 1302 Avondale Drive died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born April 16, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Ben Pannell and Jessie Mae Younger Pannell.
She was a homemaker and a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Hurt.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Hunt of Altavista and Nancy Morrison of Gretna; three sons, James Hunt of Martinsville, Richard Hunt of Hackinsack, N.J. and Robert Hunt of South Boston; one sister, Bennie Jean McCloud of Englewood, N.J.; three brothers, Phillip Pannell, Russell Pannell and Edward Pannell, all of Hackensack, N.J.; and eight grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Dale Hunt; one sister, Hazel Patrick; two brothers, Jimmie and Billy Pannell, and one granddaughter.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. John Clark and Pastor Johnny Hunt officiating. Interment
will be in the church cemetery.

Elmo Mayhew
DANVILLE, Va. - Elmo Andrew Mayhew, 75, of 252 Parker Road, Apt. 12, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 2, 1924, in Gretna, he was the son of Ollie C. Mayhew and Lillie Gross Mayhew.
On Nov. 19, 1945, he was married
to Bertell Lyles Mayhew, who survives. He attended Pleasant View Baptist Church. He was a farmer all his life.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Diane Mackjewicz and Patricia Shelton, both of Danville, and Connie Inman of Ringgold; one son, Wayne Mayhew of Danville; four sisters, Ella McClanahan and Hazel Ferrell, both of Danville, Edith Kendrick of Climax, and Sallie Austin of Florida; two brothers, James Mayhew of Massachusetts and Roy Mayhew of Gretna; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Frances M. Kirks, one sister, Ora Scearce, and two brothers, Eddie Mayhew and Harry Mayhew.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home with the Rev. Gilmore Hundley officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Connie Inman, 421 Airport Road, Ringgold.
Robert Richard Motley
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Robert Richard Motley, 69, of Virginia Beach, died May 21, 2000.
Born in Johnson City, Tenn., he was the son of the late George D. Motley and Daisy Vance Motley.
He was married
to Mary Wells Motley. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of Vietnam, serving 21 years before his retirement. He then worked at M.W.R. Little Creek Bowling. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Danville.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, C. Leigh Glover and her husband Bill of Winfall, N.C. and Mary E. Walker and her husband Jim of Va. Beach; two sisters, Rena Savage of Ringgold, Va., and Ruth New of Danville, Va.; one brother, Doras Motley of Danville, Va.; and six grandchildren, Ian Courtney, and Seth Walker both of Va. Beach; Sepheni Courtney, Susan Courtney, Ryan Courtney and Lindsey Glover all of Winfall, N.C.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 26, 2000, at 10:00 a.m. Interment
will follow in Mountain View cemetery in Danville, Virginia.
The family received friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughter's, Norfolk, Virginia.
Patsy Payne
GLADYS, Va. - Patsy Brown Payne, of 4196 Covered Bridge Road, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born in Campbell County, she was the daughter of Myrtle Sandifer.
She was first married
to Charlie B. Brown, who predeceased her, and then to George Payne, who also predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and member of Hills Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Bernice Trent of Lynchburg and Katherine B. Bailey of Gladys; one son, Elwood G. Brown Sr. of Lynchburg; one sister, Frances S. White of Washington, D.C., and seven grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was also predeceased by two sisters, Cora Grooms and Martha Sandifer, and three brothers, Eunice, Buster, and Lewis Sandifer.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Hills Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. John Price officiating. Interment
will be in the Brown family cemetery.

Roger Sutherlin
VERO BEACH, Fla. - Roger Babson Sutherlin, 76, died May 23, 2000, at his residence after an extended illness.
Born May 3, 1924 in Gates County, N.C., he was the son of Elijah Thomas Sutherlin and Lucille Fowler Sutherlin.
He was married
to Janet A. Sutherlin, who survives. He served with the United States Marines during World War II. He lived in Danville prior to moving to Vero Beach, where he lived for the past ten years. Prior to his retirement, he was an employee of Southern Railroad. He was a member of the Kings Baptist Church in Vero Beach and of American Legion Post 325 in Danville.
In addition to his wife of Vero Beach, he is survived by one son, Jack T. Sutherlin of Evington, Va.; two step-sons, Vernon E. Lovell of Ashburn, Va. and David A. Lovell of Gastonia, N.C.; one brother, Emory L. Sutherlin of Danville; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Freddie Vicks officiating. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel.
Daniel Woods
DANVILLE, Va. - Daniel O'Bryant Woods, 26, of 412 First St., died Sunday, May 21, 2000.
Born Oct. 27, 1973, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Percy Woods and Georgia Ann Strader, both of whom survive.
He served in the United States Navy and was employed as a painter.
In addition to his father of Baltimore and his mother of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Jvonne Danielle Woods and Diamond Lataya Woods, both of Danville; two sons, Jamel Taerwuan Saunders of Ringgold and JoVonte' TyQuan Woods of Danville; four sisters, Tracy Watson and Hope Banks, both of Richmond, Kimberly Dawn Watson of Danville and Tarsheema Watson of the residence; one stepsister, Kaye Francis Dixon of Danville; one brother, Timothy Anthony Watson of North Carolina, and one stepbrother, James Strader of Danville.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Julian Allen
DANVILLE, Va. - Julian Carlton Allen, 76, of 1218 Greenwood Drive died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 5, 1924, in Danville, he was the son of Harold Clifton Allen and Jessie McJerland Allen.
On Sept. 21, 1946, he was married
to Margaret Ann Gregory Allen, who survives. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in World War II. He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He helped to organize the first Boy Scout troop at Mt. Olivet. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 647. He was retired from Sasser Sign Company where he worked as Shop Foreman.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Cynthia Ann Austin of Danville; one brother, Harold Clifton Allen Jr. of Danville; one sister, Jessie Mae Morris of Raleigh, N.C., and one grandchild.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Dr. David Palmer and the Rev. Gil Hawks officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Leonard Brown
DANVILLE, Va. - Leonard Brown, 73, of 169 Bell Drive died Monday, May 22, 2000, at the Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 20, 1926, in Milton, N.C., he was a son of Simpson Brown Sr. and Lucy Johnson Brown.
He was married
to Ann Dodson Brown, who survives. He was employed with Dan River Inc. for 36 years and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Judith Michelle Brown of Danville; four sons, Leonard Wayne Brown, Timothy Ray Brown, Darnell S. Brown, all of Danville, and Otis Freeman Brown of Ringgold; four sisters, Geneva Jones of Washington, D.C., Mae Ella Garland of Ringgold, Susieanna Hughes and Josephine Johnson, both of Milton, N.C., and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia AME Church. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
