Willard James Bryant
DANVILLE, Va. - Willard James Bryant, 78, of 2535 Airview Drive died Sunday, May 28, 2000 at the Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born on April 26, 1922, Mr. Bryant was the son of the late Floyd David Bryant and Lillie Linicum Bryant. He was born in the Climax community of Pittsylvania County, but lived in Danville since 1967.
Mr. Bryant worked for Commodore Mobile Homes for 18 years, retiring at age 62.
He had been in declining health for four years and was at the Piney Forest Health Care for two weeks.
Mr. Bryant was a member of Rock of Ages Baptist Church in Reidsville, NC and was the last surviving member of his generation.
He is survived by his wife, Viola Crowder Wilson Bryant, two daughters, Elaine Stringer of Randleman, N.C. and Joyce Tuggle of Greensboro, N.C.; three step-daughters, Brenda Elliott of Danville and Kathy Cozard of Danville and Joanne Anderson of Tennessee; three-step sons, Allen Goins of Danville, Ricky Wilson of Roanoke, and Jerry Wilson of Danville; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Terry Bryant and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 31 at Swicegood Chapel by Rev. Cletus Grubbs. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m.Tuesday, May 30, 2000 at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 2535 Airview Drive.
Naomi Ruth Woodall Carter
DANVILLE, Va. - Naomi Ruth Woodall Carter, 84, died Monday, May 29, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Carter was born on March 22, 1915 and was the daughter of the late Roy Lawson Woodall and Ruth Travis Woodall.
She lived her entire life in Danville and prior to her retirement, she worked for Harnsburgers and Star Laundry Company. Mrs. Carter was a long-time member of the Melville Avenue Baptist Church.
Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard T. Carter.
She is survived by one daughter, Debra C. Johnson of Danville; son-in-law, Daniel G. Johnson of Danville; two brothers, John W. Woodall of Richmond, Harold L. Woodall of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Marion W. Erwin of Scottsdale, Az.; Janet W. Vaughn of Richmond; one grandson, Derrick Johnson of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one granddaughter, Dannell Kraus of Danville and one great-granddaughter, Skylar Kraus of Danville.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 31 at Highland Burial Park by Rev. Charles Swanson.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 326 Northmont Blvd.
Bernard Paul Gibson, Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Bernard Paul Gibson, Sr., 77, of 1429 Kentuck Road, died Sunday, May 28, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Gibson was born on April 10, 1922, and was the son of the late Coley G.Gibson and Lena McDowell Gibson.
Mr. Gibson lived most of his life in the Ringgold community and was retired from Southern Processors (Universal Leaf).
He was a graduate of the Danville Technical Institute and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Gibson was a World War II, Army veteran.
He was first married
to the former Janie Brumifeld, who died in August of 1982 and later married
the former Betty Batterman, who survives.
He is survived by his wife Betty Batterman Gibson of the home; four daughters, Vivian G. Ranson of Ringgold, Mary Lee Barber of Danville, Page G. May of Victoria and Pamela G. Schmidt of Atlanta, Ga.; three sons, B. Paul Gibson, Jr. of Altavista, D. Michael Gibson of Ringgold and John G. Gibson of Keeling; one sister, Nellie G. Farson of Danville; three brothers, William J. Gibson of Danville, C. Edward Gibson of Ringgold and Otis M. Gibson of Ringgold; 15 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Mr. Gibson was preceded in death by some of his brothers and sisters, Thomas Gibson, Bobby Wayne Gibson, Margie G. Jones, Helen G. Bass, Mamie Rae Gibson and Coley G. Gibson.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2000 at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by Rev. Dr. Doug Barber and the Rev. Dr. S. Felton Carter. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2000 at the Wrenn- Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the home, 1429 Kentuck Road.
Vernon Edward Lawrence
CHATHAM, Va. - Vernon Edward Lawrence age 73 of 692 Honeywood Road Chatham, Virginia Died May 30, 2000 at his Residence. Mr. Lawrence was born June 19, 1926 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. He was the son of the late Bee Lawrence and Louise Adkins Lawrence. He was first married
to Verlie Martin Lawrence who predeceased him, and is survived by his wife Shirley Adkins Lawrence of Chatham. He is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Laura Lee L. Wilson and Woody T. Wilson of Chatham, Rosalind L. Davidson and Preston T. Davidson of Penhook, Elaine L. Turner and Douglas Turner of Martinsville; one son and his wife, Allen Lawrence and Pamela Lawrence of Stuart; three step sons, Stephen, Brian and David Adkins all of Chatham; five sisters, Lawana L. Slayton of Danville, Evlyn L. Rea, of Collinsville, Betty L. Rea, of Spencer, Joyce L. Earp of Keeling, July L. Snow, of Danville; one brother Jack Lawrence of Spring Lake, NC. One brother Morris Lawrence predeceased him. He was a member of Oak Ridge Christian Church and a retired farmer. Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday June 1, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. from the Scott Funeral Home Chapel by Robert Montgomery, Minister. Interment
will be in the Adkins Lawrence Family cemetery in Chatham, VA. William "Bill" Love
DANVILLE, Va. - William "Bill" Love, 48, of 301 Brentwood Drive, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at his residence.
Born Oct. 23, 1951, in Richmond, he was a son of David Robert Love and Virginia Slayton Love, who survives.
On Dec. 1, 1979, he was married
to Cathy K. Love, who survives. He was raised in Victoria and received his college educaton at the University of Richmond. He was employed by Hoffheimer Shoes as a store manager. He was a member of Rivermont Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, chairman of the Stewartship Committee, Pulpit Committee, Sunday school teacher, and director of brotherhood. He was a member of Gideons International. He served as an officer for many years for the Parent Teachers Association and was a member of the Emmaus Community.
In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Hopewell, survivors include two sons, William Wilson Love and Joseph Slayton Love, both of the residence; one daughter, Sallie Rebekah Love of the residence; one sister, Becky Love of Hopewell; two brothers, Bobby Love of Hopewell and Hogie Love of Gaston Lake, N.C.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rivermont Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Waddell and the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber officiating. Interment
will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Lakeview cemetery, Victoria.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Henry Powell
CHATHAM, Va. - Henry William "Bill" Powell, 92, of 54 David Road, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at the Beverly Health Care Center, Martinsville.
Born June 8, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Ed Powell and Frances Adkins Powell Pruitt.
He was married
to Louise Tuck Powell, who predeceased him. He was owner and operator of live stock stables in Chatham. He was an auto salesman for Hunt Chevrolet for more than 20 years and sold produce at local markets. He was a member of Museville Christian Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy P. Osborne of Martinsville.
He was predeceased by one son, Richard Lee Powell; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Museville Christian Church with Minister J.D. Hunt III and Minister Randle Johnson officiating. Interment
will follow in the Museville Christian Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church, and other times at the residence of his daughter, Nancy P. Osborne, 1310 Hillcrest Ave., Martinsville.

Norman Terry
DANVILLE, Va. - Norman Terry, 83, of 152 Swanson St., died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at his residence.
Born July 10, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Claude Terry and Lucy Ann Woodson.
He was married
to Margaret C. Terry, who predeceased him. He worked for Dan River Mills Inc. and was a member of New Arbor Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Leo Glass of New Jersey; two daughters, Thelma T. Plunkett of the residence and Linda Robertson Hairston of Newport News; one sister, Janie Goode of Southerlin; one brother, Willard Terry of Danville; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park.
A viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Annie Brown
HALIFAX, Va. -Annie Belle Perkins Brown, 81, of 3043 N. Terry's Bridge Road, died May 31, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 31, 1919 in Halifax County, she was the daughter of George Monroe Perkins and Lou Kate Perkins.
She was married
to Donald Aylor Brown, who predeceased her. She was a member of the South Boston Church of God.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Allen Satterfield of Cluster Springs, and Jean Brown Tanner of Richmond; two sons, George Allen Brown of Charlotte, N.C., and David Wayne Brown of Halifax; one sister, Louise P. Rinehardt of South Boston; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday from South Boston Church of God, with the Rev. Michael Dean Allen officiating. Interment
will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Bettie Gunn
DANVILLE, Va. - Bettie Jones Gunn, 85, of 829 Valley St., died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at the Twin Oaks Nursing Home, South Boston.
Born Nov. 14, 1914 in Person County, N.C., she was the daughter of John Jones and Sarah Bailey Jones.
She was married
to Joseph Gunn, who predeceased her. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Lorillard Tobacco Company.
Survivors include one brother, John Jones of Roxboro, N.C.; and one sister, Catherine Doyle of Baltimore.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Edward James
DANVILLE, Va. - Edward Lee James, 54, of 206 Baugh St., died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 14, 1945 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John L. James and Estelle Jennings James.
He was an employee of American Furniture Company as well as a farmer.
Survivors include two daughters, Laverne Silver of Danville and Tasheka Millner of North Carolina; two sons, Vincent Edward James and Eric James, both of Danville; eight sisters, Myrtle James, Mae Frances Deering, Eunice Pool and Nannie James, all of Danville, Vestela Day of Washington, Norma Cobbs of Ringgold and Olden Carter and Rita Spells, both of Dry Fork; four brothers, Odell James of Eden, N.C., John Lloyd of South Carolina, and Roskey James and Kenneth James, both of Danville.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
