Reginald Canty, Jr.
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Reginald M. Canty, Jr., 21, of 706, Prince Court died Thursday, May 25, 2000, in his sleep.
Born July 10, 1978 in Portsmouth, he was the only son of Reginald M. and Sharon N. Canty, who survive him.
Reginald attended Mount Vernon Elementary School and York Intermediate School before graduating from York High School in 1996. He was in his third year as an information systems major at Old Dominion University in Norfolk.
Nicknamed Reggie, he was a big man with an even bigger heart. He was warm, intelligent and caring, with a friendly smile and quirky sense of humor. He seemed to know when someone needed a hug and was a loving friend. He loved sports and his Playstation. His having been here made this world a better place and it will be a sadder place for those of us he left behind.
In addition to his parents of the residence, he is survived by three sisters, Deborah A. and Bryan Downs and their son, Jason Downs of Newport News; Michele D. Canty of Danville; Regina M. and Rick Foertsch of Newport News; his girlfriend, Peggy Shreves; a great-grandmother, Charity White; grandparents, James and Alice Langley; and a host of loving uncles, cousins and friends.
A funeral was held Monday, May 29, 2000, at Providence United Methodist Church in Newport News. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Cooke Brothers Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
The Canty family would like to thank their neighbors in Prince Court, friends, relatives and others for helping them through the toughest days of their lives. God bless you for your kind words and deeds in helping us cope with the loss of our beloved son and little brother.
Obery Davis
DANVILLE, Va. - Obery Davis, 87, of 201 Beaver Drive died Monday, May 29, 2000, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 14, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Bill Davis and Lula Ferguson Davis.
On May 3, 1932, he was married
to Anna King Davis, who survives. He was a farmer prior to his retirement. He was the last survivor of his immediate family.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Frances Venable, Nell Whitehead, and Mary Thomas, all of Danville; four sons, Hubert Nelson Davis, Michael Burnell Davis, and Danny Donell Davis, all of the residence, and Percy Lee Davis of Evanston, Ill.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kentuck Baptist Church with the Rev. Jesse Fitz officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a daughter, 1264 Green Farm Road.

Elizabeth Guill
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Elizabeth Fisher Guill, 59, of 1109 Newton Farm Road died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 7, 1941, in Campbell County, she was the daughter of Hudnell O. Fisher Sr. and Helen Moses Fisher, who survives.
She was employed with Daystrom as a seamstress and was a member of Fork Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother of Brookneal, survivors include two daughters, Wanda Guill Chandler of South Boston and Linda Guill Francis of Danville; three sisters, Patricia Fisher, Ruth Lancaster and Ruby Holland, all of Lynchburg; three brothers, Hudnell O. "Buddy" Fisher of Lynchburg, and Robert Fisher and Jack Fisher, both of Brookneal, and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Stewart officiating. Interment
will follow in Clover cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of a daughter, 3071 Dan River Church Road, South Boston.

Edward James
DANVILLE, Va. - Edward Lee James, 54, of 206 Baugh St., died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at the Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 14, 1945, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John L. James and Estelle Jennings James.
He was employed with American Furniture Company for many years and was also a farmer.
Survivors include two daughters, Laverne Silver of Danville and Tasheka Millner of North Carolina; two sons, Vincent Edward James and Eric James, both of Danville; eight sisters, Myrtle James, Mae Frances Deering, Eunice Pool and Nannie James, all of Danville, Vestela Day of Washington, Norma Cobbs of Ringgold, and Olden Carter and Rita Spells, both of Dry Fork; four brothers, Odell James of Eden, N.C., John Lloyd of South Carolina, Roskey James and Kenneth James, both of Danville.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Nana Kerns
DANVILLE, Va. - Nana Taylor Kerns, 61, of 42 Glen Oak Drive, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several months of declining health.
Born May 6, 1939, in Clinchport, she was a daughter of James Echol Taylor and Lillie Mae Taylor.
She was previously married
to William Kerns Sr. She lived her entire life in Danville where she worked for Danville Regional Medical Center and Stratford Health Care Center as a secretary for 27 years. She was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Kayron K. Pruitt of Danville; one son, William G. Kerns Jr. of Danville; six sisters, Mary Bishop and Betty Wallen, both of Weber City, Devota Smith of Gate City, Dena Bates of Kingsport, Tenn., and Velma Bray and Kate Atkins, both of Reidsville, N.C.; five brothers, Charlie Taylor, Frayne Taylor, Worley Carter, Wallace Taylor, and James Taylor, all of Clinchport, and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Mike Hearp officiating. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Vandora Petty
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Vandora Peety, 87, of 41 E. 56th St., formerly of Java, Va., died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at the New York Methodist Hospital.
Born Oct. 31, 1912, in Halifax County, Va., she was a daughter of Johnny Easley and Hattie Smith Easley.
She was married
to Andrew Petty. She attended the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights and was a former member of Shockoe Baptist Church, Java, Va. She was the last member of her immediate generation.
Survivors include six foster children, Willie Pearl Dixon Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y., Wayne Petty of Hurt, Va., Sherri Smith Dublin of Naperville, Ill., and Anita Davis, Tanya Walker and Wayne Davis, all of Danville, Va.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Woodrow, Bernard, Garland and Johnny Easley, and two sisters, Mable Easley Lovelace and Rebecca Easley Dixon.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Shockoe Baptist Church with the Rev. Tyrone Petty officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service Monday at the church.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Alberta Petty, 218 Church Road, Java.

Rosa Chaney
HALIFAX, Va. - Rosa Whitlow Chaney, of 3083 Bellevue Road, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
A native of Halifax County, she was a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church.
She was married
to John Hagood Chaney, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, George Whitt Chaney of Halifax; one sister, Elizabeth "Beth" W. Owen of Halifax; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by one son, Edwin A. "Eddie" Chaney Sr. and one sister, Frances W. Popek.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from Halifax Memorial Gardens with Rev. H.V. Conner and Rev. Michael Teixeira officiating.

Melvin Colbert
DICKSON, Tenn. - Melvin "Bill" Colbert, 78, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at his residence.
Born in Gretna, he was the son of Coy and Myrtle Dalton Colbert.
He was married
to Glenna Duff Colbert, who survives. He was in charge of productions at Martha White Foods, and he was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served in the Korean War.
In addition to his wife of Vanleer, he is survived by two sons, Dale Colbert and Kenneth Colbert, both of Lebanon; two daughters, Jennifer Colbert of Knoxville, Tenn. and Carol Greer of Lebanon; two stepsons, Neal and Josh Strickland, both of Nashville; and seven grandchildren.

DANVILLE, Va. - Terry Lee Grasty, 40, of 625 Cabell St., died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
Born Nov. 3, 1959, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John E. Grasty and Lena Fitzgerald Grasty.
He was a truck driver for Dollar General for many years.
In addition to his mother of Danville, he is survived by two sons, Terrence Yarborough and Lucas Poole, both of Danville; five sisters, Margaret Ferrell of Ringgold, Mable Calloway of Sutherlin, Frances Grasty of Upper Marlboro, Md., Sandra Terry and Georgia Strader, both of Danville; and two brothers, John Grasty of Ringgold and Tommy Grasty of Danville.
