Averett Marshall Holder Sr.
ROANOKE, Va. - Averett Marshall Holder, Sr., age 69, formerly of the Bachelors Hall community, died early Friday morning June 2, 2000 at the Virginia Veterans Care Center, Roanoke, where he had resided for the past two years, and had been in declining health for the past five years.
Mr. Holder was born in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County on July 9, 1930, a son of the late Claude Holder and Josie Scearce Holder.
Mr. Holder was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Mr. Holder had lived in Roanoke for the past four years after spending most of his life in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County where he was a carpenter. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter: Debra Holder Walton, Danville, and one son: Averett Marshall Holder, Jr., Danville, and two sisters: Thelma Peters of Danville, and Gladys Walker of Durham, North Carolina, and two brothers: Adam V. Holder and Raymond Holder both of Blairs, and one granddaughter: Tammy Stanton, and one great-granddaughter: Kristen Stanton of Arizona.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Herman Holder and Andrew Holder.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Daniel G. Lackey., where military honors will be performed by the American Legion Memorial Post # 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Saturday evening from 7:30-8:30 P.M., and at other times at the residence of David and Frances Hobson at 155 Ruskin St.
Artiway Johnson
DANVILLE, Va. - Artiway "Sparky" Johnson, 92, of 153 White St., died June 1, 2000, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born March 5, 1908, he was a son of Archie Johnson and Lucy Gillis Johnson.
He was married
to Lutitia Bell Johnson, who survives, for 65 years. Prior to his retirement, he was the custodian of Calvary Methodist Church for 43 years.
In addition to his wife of Danville, he is survived by four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sons, Nathaniel Johnson and Robert Johnson.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Willie J. Toomer officiating. Interment
will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Nana Kerns
DANVILLE, Va. - Nana Taylor Kerns, 61, of 42 Glen Oak Drive, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several months of declining health.
Born May 6, 1939, in Clinchport, she was a daughter of James Echol Taylor and Lillie Mae Taylor.
She was previously married
to William Kerns Sr. She lived her entire life in Danville where she worked for Danville Regional Medical Center and Stratford Health Care Center as a secretary for 27 years. She was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Kayron K. Pruitt of Danville; one son, William G. Kerns Jr. of Danville; six sisters, Mary Bishop and Betty Wallen, both of Weber City, Devota Smith of Gate City, Dena Bates of Kingsport, Tenn., and Velma Bray and Kate Atkins, both of Reidsville, N.C.; five brothers, Charlie Taylor, Frayne Taylor, Worley Carter, Wallace Taylor, and James Taylor, all of Clinchport, and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Mike Hearp officiating. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence of Kayron Pruitt, 109 Parrot St.

Henry Link
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Henry Lionel Link, 56, of 2075 East Hyco Road, died May 31, 2000, at his residence.
Born June 21, 1943 in Halifax County, he was the son of Henry Link and Martha Lou Link.
He was married
to Mary Lee Link, who survives. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, he is survived by two sisters, Peggy Cole and Martha Lou Clark, both of South Boston; one brother, Bobby Link of South Boston; his mother, Martha Link of South Boston; three stepchildren, 11 step-grandchildren and one step-greatgrandchild.
A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday from Powell Funeral Home, with the Rev. Don Bryant officiating. Interment
will follow in Mount Cana United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Oliver W. Low
JARRATT, Va. - Mr. Oliver W. Low, 79, of Jarratt, died Friday, June 2, 2000. He is survived by his wife, June Doss Low; daughter, Peggy Edelen and her husband, John of Portsmouth; son, Edward C. Low and wife Pam of Emporia; sister, Virginia L. Deal and her husband, Eugene of Emporia; three grandchildren, Dawn Sprayberry and her husband, Jason of Portsmouth, Stephanie C. Low and Stephen Low, both of Emporia and one great-granddaughter, Amber Marie Sprayberry of Portsmouth.
The family will receive friends 7:00-8:30 p.m. Sunday, June 4 at Owen Funeral Home in Jarratt. The funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. Monday, June 5, 2000 at Grace Episcopal Church. Interment
with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Grace Episcopal Church.
Susan Clare Testerman Maxie
DANVILLE, Va. - Susan Clare Testerman Maxie, age 44, died June 1, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Susan was a native of Danville. She graduated from Averett College with a degree in BioChemistry. She was also an honors graduate of the Registered Nurse Program of Rockingham Community College.
She was preceded in death by her brother Charles Testerman and her mother Margaret.
She was the beloved mother of Brittany and Taylor Maxie. The Cherished daughter of Melvin Testerman; loved sister of Jerry Lee Testerman of Danville, Thomas M. "Tommy" Testerman of Germany; George David Testerman of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Carlie Arthur Testerman of Danville and Jean Tamson of Danville; Fiance' of Tony King of Danville, and will be missed by a host of friends.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 4, 2000, 2:00 O'Clock P.M. at Townes Memorial Chapel. Rev. James C. Raper will be conducting the services. Interment
will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.

Lucille Millner
CHATHAM, Va. - Lucille Leftwich Millner, 76, of 6501 Strawberry Road, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 23, 1923 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Leftwich and Nannie Leftwich.
She was married
to Luther Harold Millner, who predeceased her. She was an employee of Hooker Furniture Company prior to her retirement. She was also a member of the Union Hall Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher Board, president of the Missionary Society, President of the Young at Heart Club, and served on the Food Pantry Committee.
Survivors include two daughters, Hilda Lifsey of Petersburg, Va., and Elois Millner of the residence; one son, Luther Millner of Danville; two sisters, Mary Ann Dickerson and Geneva Toller, both of Chatham; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two sons, Alvin Mitchell Millner and Floyd Millner; four brothers, Lewis, Willie, Charlie and Virgous Leftwich and two sisters, Classie Tarpley and Vertell Leftwich.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from Union Hall Baptist Church with Pastor Sherman Craft officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Vandora Petty
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Vandora Petty, 87, of 41 E. 56th St., formerly of Java, Va., died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at the New York Methodist Hospital.
Born Oct. 31, 1912, in Halifax County, Va., she was a daughter of Johnny Easley and Hattie Smith Easley.
She was married
to Andrew Petty. She attended the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights and was a former member of Shockoe Baptist Church, Java, Va. She was the last member of her immediate generation.
Survivors include six foster children, Willie Pearl Dixon Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y., Wayne Petty of Hurt, Va., Sherri Smith Dublin of Naperville, Ill., and Anita Davis, Tanya Walker and Wayne Davis, all of Danville, Va.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Woodrow, Bernard, Garland and Johnny Easley, and two sisters, Mable Easley Lovelace and Rebecca Easley Dixon.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Shockoe Baptist Church with the Rev. Tyrone Petty officiating. Interment
will follow in the Petty family cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service Monday at the church.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Alberta Petty, 218 Church Road, Java.

Barbara Roach
AXTON, Va. - Barbara M. Roach, 50, of 1568 Sandy River Road, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at her residence.
Born Feb. 28, 1950 in Henry County, she was a daughter of Raymond Mulkey and Betty Bray Mulkey.
She was married
to Ernest E. Roach, who survives. She was a Senior Projects Analyst for Sara Lee in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was an employee there for over 20 years.
She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by one daughter, Cindy Pyrtle of Danville and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from McKee-Stone Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Roy Newton and Rev. Gil Hawks officiating. Interment
will follow in the Roach Family cemetery.

Cabell Thomas Davidson
ROCKY MOUNT, Va. - Cabell Thomas Davidson, 79, of Penhook, died Saturday, June 2, 2000, at the VA Medical Center.
He was predeceased by his parents, George Rube & Archie Woodie Slayton Davidson; one son, John Clark Davidson; one daughter, Deloris Bennett; one sister, Zelma Durham; and two brothers, Taylor & Willard Davidson.
Surviving are his wife Ora Rigney Davidson of the home; five sons, Preston Davidson, Ricky Davidson, Dennis Davidson, Bruce Davidson and Jerry Davidson; two daughters, Carolyn Jones and Serena Clark; one brother, Arthur Davidson; and six sisters, Christine Merricks, Kathleen Hodges, Edna Thornton, Erma David, Virginia McCrickard and Betty Ray Carter; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Robert B. Montgomery officiating. Interment
will follow in Franklin Memorial Park with Military Honors.
