Averett Marshall Holder Sr.
ROANOKE, Va. - Averett Marshall Holder, Sr., age 69, formerly of the Bachelors Hall community, died early Friday morning June 2, 2000 at the Virginia Veterans Care Center, Roanoke, where he had resided for the past two years, and had been in declining health for the past five years.
Mr. Holder was born in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County on July 9, 1930, a son of the late Claude Holder and Josie Scearce Holder.
Mr. Holder was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Mr. Holder had lived in Roanoke for the past four years after spending most of his life in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County where he was a carpenter. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter: Debra Holder Walton, Danville, and one son: Averett Marshall Holder, Jr., Danville, and two sisters: Thelma Peters of Danville, and Gladys Walker of Durham, North Carolina, and two brothers: Adam V. Holder and Raymond Holder both of Blairs, and one granddaughter: Tammy Stanton, and one great-granddaughter: Kristen Stanton of Arizona.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Herman Holder and Andrew Holder.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Daniel G. Lackey., where military honors will be performed by the American Legion Memorial Post # 325 Honor Guard.
The family received friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Saturday evening from 7:30-8:30 P.M., and will receive friends at other times at the residence of David and Frances Hobson at 155 Ruskin St.
Susan Clare Testerman Maxie
DANVILLE, Va. - Susan Clare Testerman Maxie, age 44, died June 1, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Susan was a native of Danville. She graduated from Averett College with a degree in BioChemistry. She was also an honors graduate of the Registered Nurse Program of Rockingham Community College.
She was preceded in death by her brother Charles Testerman and her mother Margaret.
She was the beloved mother of Brittany and Taylor Maxie. The Cherished daughter of Melvin Testerman; loved sister of Jerry Lee Testerman of Danville, Thomas M. "Tommy" Testerman of Germany; George David Testerman of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Carlie Arthur Testerman of Danville and Jean Tamson of Danville; Fiance' of Tony King of Danville, and will be missed by a host of friends.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 4, 2000, 2:00 O'Clock P.M. at Townes Memorial Chapel. Rev. James C. Raper will be conducting the services. Interment
will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.
The family received friends from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at Townes Funeral Home, Saturday, June 3, 2000. Other times, include the Maxie home of 2600 Mount Cross Road and the Testerman residence at 816 Holland Road.
Jessie Satterfield
FARMVILLE, Va. - Jessie Hugh Satterfield, 83, of Route 2 Box 1710, died June 2, 2000, at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond.
Born Dec. 18, 1916, in Halifax County, he was the son of William Walter Satterfield and Maggie Mae Jones Satterfield.
He was married
to Mildred Carr Satterfield, who survives. He was a member of Liberty United Church of Christ and a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II.
In addition to his wife of Farmville, he is survived by three daughters, Joice S. Ventry of Tallahassee, Fla., Christine S. Clayton of Alton and Rachel S. Matthews of Columbus, Ga.; two stepchildren, Theresa Hull Gregory and Jonathan M. Hull; three sisters, Helen S. Hayes of South Boston, Beverly S. Gholston and Bettie S. Rothwell, both of Richmond; two brothers, Walter Barkley Satterfield of Goldsboro, N.C. and Edgar Allen Satterfield of South Boston; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by five brothers, William, Howard, Johnnie, Paul and Marvin Satterfield; and four sisters, Effie Caldwell, Frances Hastings, Pauline Thompson and Bernice Evans.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from Liberty United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Dwight Moore and the Rev. Rick Caldwell officiating.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence of Christine Clayton, 3151 Harmony Road, Alton.
Janie Woody
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Janie Wilborn Woody, 68, of 303 Nottingham Dr., died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born Jan. 3, 1932 in Halifax County.
She was married
to Walter Bass Woody Sr., who predeceased her. She was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church. Prior to her retirement, she was an employee of Medical Surgical Associates.
Survivors include one son, Walter Bass Woody Jr. of Paces; one daughter, Patricia W. Powell of Paces; one brother, Tim Wilborn of Alton; one sister, Harriett W. Bradshaw of South Boston; and four grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by one sister, Betty W. Jeffers.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Black Walnut Baptist Church in Cluster Springs, with the Rev. Grover Stevens officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Brooks Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
Lowell Belcher
DANVILLE, Va. - Lowell Aubern Belcher, 80, of 445 Lynch Dr., died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at the residence.
Born March 3, 1920, in Meadows of Dan, he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Conner Belcher.
He was married
to Thelma Walker Belcher, who predeceased him Oct. 14, 1995. He lived his entire life in the Danville area and worked in the 4A weave room at Dan River Mills prior to his retirement. He had also worked in maintenance at Piedmont Mall.
He was a veteran of the Army Air Corp, serving in the Signal Corp in the Pacific Theater of World War II. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion and the AARP. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Gary A. Belcher of Winchester and Ronald L. Belcher of Danville; one daughter, Linda Belcher Swiger of Fancy Gap; two brothers, Alvin Belcher of Meadows of Dan and Warren Belcher of Rockville, Md.; one sister, Lena B. Conner of Meadows of Dan; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Larry Taylor officiating. Military honors will be performed by American Legion Post No. 1097.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence.
Mildred Burton
HURT, Va. - Mildred Barnes Burton, 74, of 6337 Blue Ridge Dr. died Sunday, June 4, 2000, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born June 2, 1926, in Ruffin, N.C., she was a daughter of Phillip and Minnie Craddock Barnes.
She was married
to Wiliam Lee Burton. She was a retired employee of the former Craddock Terry Shoe Corp., Gretna.
Survivors include two sons, William L. Burton Jr. of Lynchburg and Charles T. Burton of Hurt; one daughter, Kathy Tuck of Hurt; two brothers, Harold Barnes of Texas and C.D. Barnes of Dry Fork; two sisters, Francis Bennet of Gretna and Phyllis Wade of Lillington, N.C., and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Finch & Finch Chapel with the Rev. Brian Faison officiating. Interment
will follow in Altavista Memorial PArk.

Marjorie Faucette
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Marjorie White Faucette, 63, of 1195 East Hyco Road died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at her home.
Born April 25, 1937, in Oxford, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Joseph R. White and Ernestine F. White, who survives.
She was married
to Gene Taylor Faucette, who survives. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church. She was a Brownie Scout leader for many years and served on the Halifax County Improvement Council. She was a tutor for the Halifax County/South Boston Volunteer Literacy Program.
In addition to her husband of South Boston and mother of Stovall, N.C., survivors include one daughter, Alice F. Wayne of Hanover; one sister, Julia W. Capps of Sanford, N.C.; three brothers, Joe B. White of Oxford, N.C., David F. White of Stovall, N.C., and Gerald P. White of Henderson, N.C. and one grandson.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Fox officiating. Burial will be in Stovall Memorial cemetery, Stovall, N.C.

Blanche Gwynn
DANVILLE, Va. - Blanche Warner Gwynn, 95, of 247 Epps St. died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at her residence.
Born Feb. 1, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Walter Warner and Katie Boswell.
She was married
to Monroe Gwynn, who predeceased her. She was employed with Dan River Inc. for many years.
Survivors include one sister, Doretha Bowe of Danville, and three stepsons.
A funeral will be held at 12 noon Tuesday at Shady Grove Baptist Church. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until time of service Tuesday at the church.

Bessie Logan
DANVILLE, Va. - Bessie Howard Logan, 86, of 2002 North Main St. died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 7, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Thomas Walton and Elisha Motley.
She was married
to Shrimp Logan, who predeceased her. She was employed with Dibrell Brothers Tobacco Company for many years.
Survivors include two sisters, Hattie Lewis and Louise Shetchell, both of New York.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Lula Wiggs
DANVILLE, Va. - Lula Dillon Wiggs, 94, of 123 Sherwood Dr. died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at Lucy Corr Nursing Home, Chesterfield.
Born May 23, 1906, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Monroe M. Singleton and Ollie Dunaway Singleton.
She was first married
to William P. Dillon, who predeceased her, and then to A.W. Wiggs, who also predeceased her. She spent most of her life in Danville and prior to her retirement, was a nurse with Danville Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church where she served as president of the Nora Mosley Bible Class. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. She was the last member of her generation.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret D. Waddell of Midlothian and Dr. Celia D. Blanks of Winter Garden, Fla.; one son, Ralph G. Dillon of Concord, N.C.; three stepchildren, Peggy Asycue of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Orez Wiggs and Kenneth Wiggs, both of Danville; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Betty Toombs.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. George Neas officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
