Charles Coleman Sr.

RINGGOLD, Va. - Professor Charles Kenneth Coleman Sr., 95, of 621 Milton Highway, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.

Born April 15, 1907, in Danville, he was the son of Charles Coleman and Beta Brown Coleman.

He was first married to Margaret Thomas Coleman, who predeceased him and later married Sally White Coleman, who survives. He was a graduate of Howard University, a former candidate for Danville City Council and was a lifetime member of the NAACP. He was active in instituting voting rights for blacks in Danville.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, Charles Kenneth Coleman Jr. of Danville; two stepdaughters, Phyllis Younger of Manhattan, N.Y., Patricia Price of Bronx, N.Y.; three stepsons, Henry Younger of California, Edward Younger of Queens, N.Y., and Joseph Younger of Brooklyn, N.Y.

He was predeceased by one brother, Carl Coleman.

The memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Thomas Brooks officiating.

Odessa Dix

DANVILLE, Va. - Odessa Via Dix, 86, of 225 Hamlin Ave., died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at the residence.

Born Sept. 28, 1915, in Bassett, she was married to Fred Dix, who predeceased her. She worked as an LPN for Danville Nursing Home and later for Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she retired. She was of the Baptist faith and had been in declining health for one year.

Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Dix O'Neal of Cary, N.C.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Mildred Hardy and Opal Haynes; one one brother, Chester Via.

The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Fredrick J. Vicks officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Walter Edwards

CHATHAM, Va. - Walter Worth Edwards age 57 of 660 Samuel Harris La. Chatham went home to be with the Lord, Thursday May 30, 2002. Mr. Edwards was born October 3, 1944 in Allegheny County North Carolina. He was the son of the late Edgar Worth Edwards and Rachel Dix Edwards. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Edwards Dodd of Chatham and Allison Edwards Dolan of Dry Fork; four sisters, Sue E. Strader, Kay E. Delancey, Lynn E. Wilson, and Stella E. Pratt all of Ruffin, NC; two grandchildren, Taylor Elizabeth Dodd of Chatham and Joshua Edward Dolan of Dry Fork. He was a Member Samuel Harris Memorial Baptsit Church and a Deacon, Sunday school Teacher and former choir director. He was employed by the Ownes-Brockway Glass.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, June 2, 2002 at 2:00 PM from the Samuel Harris Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas Wright and the Rev. Henry A. Meadows, Jr. Interment will be in the Hillcrest Burial Park. the family will receive friends Saturday June 1, 2002 from 7 to 8 PM at Samuel Harris Memorial Baptist Church and at other times will be at the residence of his daughter Allison Dolan 4393 Dry Fork Road, Dry Fork, VA. The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Samuel Harris Memorial Baptist Church building fund or the Scholarship fund. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Miller

GRETNA, Va. - Dorothy Lula Miller, 88, of 2113 Upper Mountain Road, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 10, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Winston Patrck and Lizzie Patrick.

She was first married to Alfred Gilbert and later to Jezreel Miller, both predeceased her. She was a homemaker and member of Staunton Baptist Church where she was a member of the senior choir.

Survivors incldue two daughters, Evelyn Pearson of Clinton, Md., and Mary Avery of Cheltenham, Md.; one son, Easley Gilbert of Long Island, N.Y.; three grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Staunton Baptist Church with Dr. P.A. Medley officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 12:30-1 p.m. Saturday at the church.

John Nunnally

PELHAM, N.C. - John Arthur Nunnally of 3110 Chandler Mill Road died Wednesday afternoon at the Moses Cone Hospital. He was a native and lifelong resident of Caswell County. Mr. Nunnally was a faithful member of Bluestone Baptist Church where he served with the Board of Deacons and Trustees, Male Chorus and Cemetery Committee. He was a retiree of the Fieldcrest Cannon Corporation and a farmer by trade. Fraternally, he was a member of the Pelham Lodge No. 571, F.&A.M. (PHA). Survivors are: a loving wife of 49 years, Mrs. Marguerite Gunter Nunnally of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Deborah N. Jordan and spouse, Therman of Winston-Salem, N.C., Ms. Wanda Nunnally of the home, Ms. Gwendolyn Lancaster of Greensboro, N.C.; two sons, Larry nunnally of the home, Ray Nunnally and spouse, Tonya of Pelham, N.C.; 5 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; seven sisters, Ms. Lou Henry Voss of Washington, D.C., Ms. Odessa Bethel, Ms. Ollie Stanley, Ms. Lillie English and Ms. Geraldine Willis, all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Ms. Daisy Hughes of Oxon Hill, Maryland, Ms. Irene Price of Danville, Virginia; one brother, James Nunnally and spouse, Fannie of Pelham; a host of other relatives and a multitude of cherished friends. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002 from the Bluestone Baptist Church, 9829 MC 700, Pelham with Pastor Timothy Warren and Rev. John B. Doe, Jr. presiding. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family visitation will be Saturday from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at the church and may be contacted other times at the residence. Funeral arrangements are by Johnson & Sons Funeral Home, 115 Holderby Street, Reidsville, N.C.

Grace Brisbane-Pendola

PAW PAW, Mich. - Grace M. Brisbane-Pendola, 82, of Heartland Health Care Center in Kalamazoo, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Heartland Health Care Center.

Born June 16, 1919, in Grosse Point, she was the daughter of Edward and Edith Clements Brisbane.

She was married May 1998 to Mike Pendola, who predeceased her January 2001. She was a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School and Kalamazoo College. She studied at Seabury Western Theological Seminary and Garrett Institute in Evanston, Ill. and Northwestern University in Chicago. She taught public school in Virginia and was director of Christian education in several parishes in North Carolina. She was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Paw Paw and was a member and past National officer of the Daughter's of the King.

Survivors include one brother, Edward J. Brisbane of Paw Paw.

She was predeceased by one brother, William C. Brisbane and one sister, Gertrude E. Brisbane.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Paw Paw with the Rev. Fr. Joseph Neiman officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park in Kalamazoo.

The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at Adams Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark's Church Building Fund.

Patsy Setliff

DANVILLE, Va. - Patsy Dallas Setliff, 69, of 462 Cedarbrook Drive, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at the residence.

Born April 18, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, Spring Garden Community, she was the daughter of the late Robert Jefferson Dallas and the late Hontas Wells Dallas.

She was married May 22, 1959, to Marion F. Setliff, who survives. Mrs. Setliff was a graduate of Spring Garden High School. She was a weaver at Dan River Mills for forty years until her retirement at age 58 on disability. She was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church. She had been in declining health for the past year.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandy Setliff Collins of Danville; one son-in-law, Wade Collins of Danville; one sister, Kitty Dallas Hollifield of Lynchburg; and 2 grandchildren, Ashley Collins and Andrew Collins.

She was predeceased by one sister, Juanita Frazier.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce and the Rev. Steve Dalton officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends Friday, May 31, 2002 from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

Grace Tibbs

DANVILLE, Va. - Grace Beheler Tibbs, 92, of Roman Eagle Memorial Home, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after eight years of declining health.

Born Feb. 19, 1910, in Rocky Mount, she was the daughter of Hughes Beheler and Hilda Arrington Beheler.

She lived most of her life in Danville and had been a resident of Roman Eagle for eight years. She had worked for Dan River Mills for 40 years. She was of the Baptist faith and was the last surviving member of her generation.

Survivors include two stepsisters, Virginia Warrick of New Hampshire, and Juanita Polk of Martinsville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one son, Ricky Joseph Tibbs.

The memorial graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. John LaRue officiating.

The famiy will be at the residence of Florence Hackler, 134 Schoolfield Drive in Danville.

Marie T. VanAlst

DANVILLE, Va. - Marie T. VanAlst, 84, of 165 Sweetbriar Drive, died 1:12 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born Nov. 8, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Phillip Arden and Winnie Mae Childress Tarpley.

She was married to Reuben VanAlst, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include one son, Phillip VanAlst of Honolulu, Hawaii; six sisters, Louise Ricketts of Danville, Frances Shelton of Greensboro, N.C., Bernice Kent of Tennessee, Dorothy McNeely of Emeral Isle, N.C., June Rowan of Seattle, Wash., and Phyllis Zinna of San Diego, Calif.

She was predeceased by one sister, Lena Stowe.

The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Bennett Shelton officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 12-1:30 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, 2025 N. Main St. in Danville.

Dr. Harry Wright

LEBANON, Tenn. - Dr. Harry Wright, 72, of Hearthside Home, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at University Medical Center Hospital.

Born July 21, 1929, in Louisville, Ky., he was the son of Chaplain Harry Wright Sr. and Katherine Mahan Wright.

He moved to Clewe, Va. at an early age where his father was a minister of the Baptist Church for ten years. He moved to Danville, Va. where he graduated with honors from G.W. High School in 1947. He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1951 and received his doctoral residency at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1953. He later went to Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, and after several years served in the U.S. Navy as Captain and then served as head of pediatrics for Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, Calif. for many years prior to his retirement.

Survivors include one sister, Mildred Talley of Danville; one half brother, John Wright of Branden, Miss.; and one stepsister, Mary Elizabeth Corum of Lebanon.

He was predeceased by one brother, Lawrence Wright of Cupertino, Calif.

The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the Veteran's Home Mountain Home, Tenn. with military honors.

Florinda Adams

DANVILLE, Va. - Florinda E. Adams, 70, of 712 Medical Center Road, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 4, 1931, in Hondarous, she was the daughter of Humberto Everett and Corina Everett.

She was married to Roy Howard Adams, who predeceased her. She was a secretary for the City of New York Mayor's Office. She was a member of Tarpley's Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Gregory Adams and Adrian Adams, both of Bronx, N.Y., and Curtis Adams of Clearwater, Fla.; three daughters, Irene Adams, Corina Adams and Crystal Adams, all of Bronx, N.Y.; one sister, Lois Garbutt of Boston, Mass.; and 12 grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tarpley's Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Divens officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Ruth Barksdale

DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Amis Barksdale, formerly of Danville, died June 4, 2002.

She was a gifted artist, and most recently had her studio at Shockoe Bottom Arts Center in Richmond.

Survivors include one son, Zachary Felder of Richmond; her mother, Anne S. Barksdale of Culpeper; one brother, Beverly Barksdale of Atlanta, Ga.; and one sister, Kennon B. Jamieson of Ashville.

She was predeceased by one brother, William R. Barksdale.

Cremation Society of Virginia is in charge of arrangements.

Vincent Bateman

DANVILLE, Va. - Vincent Harold Bateman, 50, of 580 Willow Briar Lane, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Bowman Gray Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Born September 28, 1951, in Danville, he was a son of Samuel Oakey Bateman, who predeceased him, and Eva Scearce Bateman, who survives.

He lived in the Brosville community and was a member of Brosville United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Tunstall High School and attended Averett College.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include, one sister, JoAnn Bateman Adams of Brosville; one half sister, Reba Whitt of northern Va.; and two brothers, Vincent Bateman of Rocky Mount and Bobby Bateman of Brosville.

He was predeceased by one brother, Samuel O. Bateman Jr. and his birth mother, Evelyn Wright Bateman.

The graveside service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dave Rochford officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence of Eva Scearce Bateman, 556 Willow Briar Lane.

Myrtle Bullington

DANVILLE, Va. - Myrtle Scearce Bullington, 99, formerly of 1311 Claiborne Street, Danville, Va., died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at 4:10 a.m. at Piney Forest Health Care Center, Danville, Va..

Born July 7, 1902, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of William Henry Scearce Sr. and Jenny Belle Soyars Scearce, both deceased.

She was married to Leonidas Luke Bullington, who predeceased her. She had lived in the Danville and Chatham area her entire life. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include one granddaughter, Kaye Elliott of Richmond; two great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchidren.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Vivian Walker; two brothers, Robert F. Scearce, and William H. Scearce; and three sisters, Elsie Cox, Stella Quaries, and Evelyn Russell.

The graveside service will be held Saturday, June 8, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at Danville Memorial Gradens by the Rev. Walter Yancey. Burial will take place at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Jewel Scearce at 1302 Westover Drive, Danville.

By request of the deceased, the family suggests no flowers.
