R. Gayle Hands

LA PLATA, Md. - R. Gayle Hands, 52, of La Plata, died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at Washington Hospital Center.

Born October 10, 1947 in Danville, Virginia, she was a daughter of Bessie Gilbert Griffith, who predeceased her.

She was married to Joseph A. Hands Jr. of Cobb Island, Md., who survives. She was a legal secretary for Williams & Connley Law Firm.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Douglas S. Hands of Cobb Islan and Joseph A. Hands III; two daughters, Stephanie G. Smith and Donna M. Hands, both of Cobb Island; three step daughters, Karen Taylor, Cathy Reynolds and Patricia Deering; one grandchild, Savannah Marie Smith; five step-grandchildren, Charles Deering, Joseph Robert Deering, Katelin Reynolds, Nichole Taylor and Matthew Taylor; one son-in-law, David M. Smith of Cobb Island; and five sisters, Elaine Dean of Mount Airy, Md., Alice Strader of Raleigh, N.C., Donna Schroyer of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mary Armstrong of Chesapeake and Shirley Strader of Ruffin, N.C. She is also survived by many other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. from Holy Ghost Catholic Church with Father Aloysius Newman officiating. Interment icon will follow in Holy Ghost cemetery. Pallbearers are Douglas Hands, Joseph A. Hands III, David M. Smith Jr., Tommy Schroyer, Charles Welch and Marty Thompson. Honorary pallbearers include Dennis Olsen, Bill McPhual and Tom Hamilton.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, P.A.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Savanah Marie Smith Scholarship Fund.

Vincent Lancaster

DANVILLE, Va. - Vincent Lee Lancaster, 51, of 262 Vicar Place died Monday, June 5, 2000, at his residence after seven months of declining health.

Born July 7, 1948, in Danville, he was a son of Andrew Clay Lancaster and Nellie Gilbert Lancaster, who survives.

He was married to Jean Walker Lancaster, who survives. He was a veteran of the United States Army National Guard where he served as Lt. Colonel. He had spent most of his life in Danville where he was the Director of Compensation and Administration for Dan River Inc. He was a member of Woodberry Hills Baptist Church where he served as Deacon. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #325, and a former member of the Danville J.C.'s.

In addition to his mother of Danville and wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Vincent Todd Lancaster of South Boston, and one daughter, Sharon Lancaster Childress of Danville, and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Woodberry Hills Baptist Church with the Rev. Lewis Harris and the Rev. Billy Scearce officiating. Interment icon will follow in Highland Burial Park with military honors performed by American Legion Post #325 Honor Guard.

The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and will recieve friends at other times at the residence.

Frances Talbott

SEAFORD, Va. - Frances Adell Oakley Talbott, 84, died Monday, June 5, 2000, in Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News.

Born Sept. 18, 1915 in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Harvey M. Oakley and Delia Oakley.

She was married to Ammon B. Talbott, who predeceased her.

Survivors include two daughters, Jean T. McCoy and Faye T. Childrey, both of Seaford; two sons, Curtis W. Talbott of Alton and Ronnie P. Talbott of South Boston; four sisters, Peggy Wilkerson of Roxboro, N.C., Shirley Rich of Durham, N.C., Mary Webb and Faye Ragans, both of Greensboro, N.C.; four brothers, Sam Oakley of Roxboro, T.G. Oakley of Rougemont, N.C., Harry L. Oakley of Durham and Harry P. Oakley of Daytona Beach, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Emmitt F. Talbott, two sisters, Marie Turner and Helen Turner; and two brothers, Calvin Oakley and Melvin Oakley.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from Brooks Funeral Home. Interment icon will follow in Harmony United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence of Curtis Talbott, 1057 Paradise Road, Alton.

Wilton Lewis Woods

FERRUM, Va. - Wilton Lewis Woods, age 86, of Ferrum, passed away Monday, June 5, 2000. Born September 7, 1913, he was a son of the late George and Lou Webb Woods. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Susie Belle Willis Woods. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the United States Navy. Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Macie James Woods of the home; son, Jimmy Wilton Woods of Ferrum; two step sons and daughter-in-law, Harold and Mary Mullins of Ferrum, Neal Mullins of Ferrum; three sisters, Beatrice Mills of Danville, Irene Gibbs of Rocky Mount, Thelma Haley of Collinsville; brother and sister-in-law, Posey and Pricella Woods of Danville; three grandchildren, Danielle Woods of Ferrum, Britney Woods of Liberty, N.C., Jessica Woods of Rocky Mount; step-grandchildren, Mike and Vicky Gandy of Huntington, Texas, Tommy Mullins of St. Louis, Missouri; step great-grandchildren, Lauren and Sam Gandy of Huntington, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at Lynch Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Susan Brack officiating. Interment icon will follow in the Cooper Family cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday where the family will be from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. and other times at the home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Building Fund of Bethany United Methodist Church, 3329 Henry Road, Ferrum, Va. 24088. Lynch Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge of arrangements.

J. Norman Worsham

MANASSAS, Va. - Lieutenant Colonel J. Norman Worsham, age 85, of Manassas, died June 2, 2000 after a long illness.

Born October 14, 1914 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Henry Randolph Worsham and Ethel Blair Worsham. Lieutenant Colonel Worsham was married to the late Molly Ellen Sharp Worsham. He was predeceased by two brothers, H. Blair Worsham, Paul Worsham, two sisters, Ruth Miller and Dorothy Moorefield and a niece Barbara Skorija.

Lieutenant Colonel Worsham was a graduate of Renan High School, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, BS, 1941 and Duke University, MS, 1941. Prior to attending VPI, Colonel Worsham was a farmer. Upon graduation, he was commisioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Coast Artillery. His assignments included command and staff positions within the artillery branch and profession of military science and tactics at Western Kentucky State University, Bowling Green, Kentucky. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict serving 48 months of combat. His decorations included the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Medal. He was a member of the Pershing Rifles. Following his military career, he entered the field of education. He instructed mathematics at the Junior High and Senior High School levels in Prince William county School system.

He is survived by his son, Randy Worsham of Manassas; two brothers, Frank Worsham of Gretna and John Worsham of New Bern, N.C.; two sisters, Isla Worsham and Mae Worsham both of Falls Church; sisters-in-law, Helen Worsham of Gretna and Louise Worsham of New Bern, NC. Five nieces, Dale W. Phillips of Altavista, Ann Shortt of Altavista, Helen Barbour of Gretna, Wren Abramo of Arlington and Nancy Johndrow of Durham, NC.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2000 at Straightstone Baptist Church by Rev. James Manuel. Burial with Masonic rites by Polk Lodge #61 A.F. & A.M. will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2000 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his brother, Frank Worsham, 785 Frank Worsham Road, Gretna.

Mark Dalton

DANVILLE, Va. - Mark Stephen Dalton, 43, of 112 Clifton St., died Monday, June 5, 2000, in Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro, N.C., after several months of declining health.

Born Aug. 9, 1956 in Danville, he was the son of the late Elmond Ray Dalton and Turessa Sutphin Dalton, who survives.

He had lived all of his life in Danville and Greensboro, N.C. He worked for John Daniel Construction Company for a number of years before becoming a self-employed carpenter.

In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include one brother, Michael Elmond Dalton of Danville, and two sisters, Judy Raye Dalton of Boston and June D. Martinez of Greensboro, N.C.

A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with a eulogy conducted by friends.

The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence of his brother, 267 Ingram Road.

Leon Jayne

DANVILLE, Va. - Emil Leon Jayne, 65, of 5036 Worsham Court died suddenly Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at Danville Regional MEdical Center.

Born September 6, 1934, in Centralia, Illinois, he was the son of Emil F. Jayne and Lena Tabor Jayne Draper.

On July 31, 1954, he was married to Delores Clark Jayne, who survives.

Mr. Jayne moved to the Danville area in 1954 where prior to his retirement he was previously employed with the City of Danville and was one of the first employees hired in 1966 at the Goodyear plant in Danville. Mr. Jayne was a member of the Williamson Memorial Presbyterian Church where he also served as an elder. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Emily Jayne DuVarney of Boone, N.C.; son-in-law, Brian DuVarney of Boone, N.C.; grandson, Noah Michael DuVarney of Boone, N.C.; sister, Lorelei Fox of Walnut Hill, Illinois; sister Ilene Caldwell of Cupertime, Calif.; mother-in-law, Edna Clark Pugh of Danville, Va.; Sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Phyllis and Buddy Clark of Fancy Gap, Va., sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Becky and Billy Gravely of Ringgold, Va., sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Sue and Johnny Quinn of Danville, Va.

A graveside funeral will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2000, at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Harold Kistler officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence.

Fred Lee

DANVILLE, Va. - Fred Lee, 82, of 1006 W. Paxton St., died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at Martinsville Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 15, 1917, in Milton, N.C., he was the son of Wilkes Lee and Mary McAden.

He was married to Dorothy W. Lee, who survives. He was employed as a laborer with Dan River Mills Inc.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Larry Eatman of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Marvin A. Lee of Rialton, Calif.; four daughters, Patricia Parker and Santa Monica Watkins, both of Danville, Mary R. Gray of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Andrea D. Taylor of Greensboro, N.C.; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerome Morris officiating. Interment icon will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.

A viewing was held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Isabelle Milam

DANVILLE, Va. - Isabelle Williams Milam, 75, of Danville and formerly of Martinsville, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center.

Born June 10, 1924, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late Clarence L. Blankenship and Ida Mae Wright Blankenship, who survives.

She was married to Louis L. Milam, who survives. She was a graduate of Martinsville High School and was employed by Starling Pharmacy, Martinsville. She was a member of North Main Street Baptist Church in Danville and was a former member of McCabe Memorial Baptist Church in Martinsville. She was also a member of Stonecroft Ministries and BSF Bible Studies in Danville.

In addition to her mother of Martinsville and husband of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Brenda Lee Powell of Ridgeway, Carolyn Ann Gauldin of Matthews, N.C., and Yvonne Johnston of Hillsville; one son, Michael T. "Micky" Williams of Martinsville; one sister, Dorothy Barrow of Spencer; two brothers, Marvin E. Blankenship and S.G. Blankenship, both of Martinsville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Theodore R. Williams.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Smith and Dr. Calvin Rains officiating. Interment icon will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services, 109 Broad St., Martinsville.

James Davis

DANVILLE, Va. - James Thomas Davis, 82, of 2069 Stony Mill Road, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and a six-day stay in the hospital.

Born Dec. 9, 1917, in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jesse Thomas Davis and Lou Eanes Davis.

He was married to Gertrude Parsons Davis, who predeceased him on March 4, 1990. He worked at Dan River Inc. for many years before retiring at the age of 65. He lived in Brosville all his life and was a member of Brosville United Methodist Church where he served as a Lay Leader, choir member, Superintendent of Sunday School, and served on the official board of the church. He was a well-known poet and was a charter representative forming the Boy Scouts of America Pack # 378. He was a member of the Brosville Ruritan Club.

Survivors include one son, William James "Billy" Davis of Brosville, and one sister, Elizabeth Davis of Brosville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Thomas Wayne Davis.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Brosville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dave Rochford officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Elizabeth "Betsy" Longsworth Evans

DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth "Betsy" Longsworth Evans, 75, of 125 Dyerwood Place died Tuesday, June 6, 2000; 4:30 a.m., at the residence.

Born January 20, 1925, in Burdick, Indiana, she was the daughter of James Butler Longsworth, Sr., and Irma Lipke Longsworth.

On March 30, 1947, she was married to Zane Carson Evans, who survives.

She was a registered nurse who last worked at Bay Shores Medical Center in Torrence, California. Following her retirement in 1994, she returned with her husband to Danville. During her career she was Director of Nurses at Scottsboro Regional Hospital in Scottsboro, Alabama; for several years, Assistant Director of Bay Harbor Rehabilitation Hospital in Torrence, California and Director of Utilization Review for Bay Shores Clinic, and an organization of one hundred plus doctors with more than one hundred thousand patients. She was a former supervisor of nursing at the Memorial Hospital of Danville. She was a former member of the Sweet Adelines. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Danville where she was a featured soloist years ago. She also served as a volunteer at the Danville Regional Medical Center.

She moved to Farmville, Va. as a child. She received her nurse's training and worked at the Memorial Hospital of Danville. She lived in North Carolina, South Carolina, Puerto Rico, Alabama, Georgia, Scotland, and California.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Diane Mescal Evans and husband, Stephen Gephard of Middle Haddam, Ct., Becky Rae Evans and Wendy Lee Evans, both of Cayucos, Calif., and one brother, James B. Longsworth of Pensacola, Fla.

She was predeceased by one sister, Alice L. Briggs.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn, Jr. officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of ELIZABETH EVANS, to the DANVILLE LIFE SAVING CREW or THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION.

Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
