DANVILLE, Va. - Elsie Franklin Maxie Collie, 91, of 2501 Mount Cross Road, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born May 6, 1909 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John Henry Franklin and Annie Howard Hudson Franklin.
She was first married
to Joseph Maxie Sr., who predeceased her on Oct. 11, 1938. She was later married
to Clarence Collie, who predeceased her on July 1, 1985. Prior to her retirement, she was an employee at Dan River Inc. She spent her life in Danville as a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, Schoolfield Rebecca Lodge and Dan River Retired Workers Club.
Survivors include three daughters, Evelyn Maxie Pena of Danville, Margaret Maxie Hearp of Dry Fork and Naomi Maxie McDaniel of Danville; one brother, J. Earl Franklin of Danville; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren and seven step-great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands and parents, she was predeceased by one son, Joseph Maxie Jr.; three brothers, Carlton, Clyde and Bennie Franklin; one daughter, Rebecca Maxie Mitchell and one sister, Hortense Bliss.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Wayne Crews officiating.
The family will receive friends from Evelyn Pena's residence, 2445 Mount Cross Road, Danville.

Dennis Gilmore Daniel
DRY FORK, Va. - Dennis Gilmer Daniel age 78 of 4308 Dry Fork Rd, Dry Fork, Virginia died Thursday June 15, 2000 at his Residence. Mr. Daniel was born July 29, 1921 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He was the son of the late Dennis Winford Daniel and Emma Lee Powell Daniel. He was predeceased by his wife Ethel Marie Custer Daniel. He is survived by two daughters, Gail D. Midkiff of Elkin, N.C. and Donna D. Herndon of Chatham; five grandchildren, Rob, Dennis and Laura Midkiff, Lee and Liz Herndon; one great granddaughter, Peyton Midkiff. He was one of the founding members of Christ Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Keep in Touch Club and a 1941 graduate of Whitmell High School and a World War II veteran. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday June 17, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. from the Christ Episcopal Church by the Rev. Cleon Ross. Interment
will be in the Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va. The family will receive friends at the residence, 4308 Dry Fork Road, Dry Fork, Va. The family suggests in lieu of flowes memorial contributions be made to the Dry Fork Vol. Fire Department, Chatham Rescue Squad or the Christ Episcopal Church. Almure Davis
GRETNA, Va. - Almure Davis, 85, of 4345 Piney Road, died Monday, June 12, 2000, in Virginia Baptist Hospital, Lynchburg.
Born Feb. 1, 1915 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of George Thomas Martin and Roena Toler Martin.
She was married
to Stephen Davis, who predeceased her. Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a nurse in Washington and was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include eight sisters, Ollie Elias of Jamestown, N.Y., Carrie Whitehead, Roena Adams, Louise Ward, Willie Whitehead and Otelia Myers, all of Gretna, Gracie Adams of Chester, Pa., and Lois Logan of Worchester, Mass.; and one brother, Russell Martin of Gretna.
A funeral will be held at noon Friday from the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Isaac Monroe officiating. Interment
will follow in Piney Grove Baptist Church cemetery.
Robert Harris Jr.
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Robert L. Harris Jr., 57, of 1130 Wilson Memorial Trail, Vernon Hill, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was born Nov. 23, 1943.
Survivors include his father, Ralph Harris Sr. of Vernon Hill; one sister, Mary Harris of Vernon Hill; and three brothers, Ras and Leroy Harris, both of Vernon Hill and Charlie Harris of Albany, N.Y.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from Mt. Pleasant CME Church with Rev. William Howerton officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and at other times at the residence.
Catherine Hopkins
DANVILLE, Va. - Catherine Viola Gibson Hopkins, 79, of 291 Locust Lane, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at her residence.
Born Aug. 5, 1920 in Callands, she was the daughter of Ford Gibson and Rosie Lee Rigney Gibson.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she was an employee of Dan River Inc. She was married
to Johnnie Pershing Hopkins, who predeceased her in 1995. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Piedmont Walking Club.
Survivors include three brothers, Irvin Gibson of Cascade, Robert Gibson of Danville and Neal Gibson of Roanoke; and two sisters, Essie Bryan and Lizzie Kendrick, both of Danville.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Clayton Murphy.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
Mary Jones
DRY FORK, Va. - Mary Nell Jones, 57, of 1977 Hopewell Road, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at her residence.
Born Sept. 14, 1942 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Henry Jones and Alease Bennett Jones.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Corning Glass. She was a member of Guilfield Baptist Church.
Survivors include six sisters, Gladys Dickerson, Frances Martin and Louise Jefferson, all of Dry Fork, Minnie Ferrell of Spring Lake, N.C., Eva Holt and Elois Terry, both of Danville; and four brothers, Edward, Thomas, and Haywood Jones, all of Dry Fork and Herman Jones of Baltimore.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from Guilfield Missionary Baptist Church. Interment
will follow in the Jones Family cemetery.

Vernell Jones
JAVA, Va. - Vernell S. Jones, 88, of 481 Brownsville Heights Lane, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 1, 1912 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Stephens and Ida Luck Stephens.
She was married
to Howard Jones, who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and member of the Shockoe Baptist Church.
Survivors include ten daughters, Lucy Henry, Marva Davis and Debra Kelly, all of Java, Nellie Glass of Danville, Margie Venable of Durham, N.C., Lovelean Jones and Lillie Wimbush, both of Upper Marlboro, Md., Alice Davis of Dover, N.J., Olivia Womack of Chatham and Martha Myers of Greensboro, N.C.; two sons, William Jones of Java and Charles Jones of Danville; one brother, Fitzhugh Stephens of Manassas; 40 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by seven sisters, Ollie Layman, Matilda Adams, Flossie Dickerson, Jimmie Clark, Martha S. Palmer and Sallie Pat Terry; and six brothers, Curtis, David, Clyde, John Eddie, Claude and Willie Stephens.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday from Shockoe Baptist Church with Rev. G.H. Pass officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park, Danville.

Daisy Mason
DANVILLE, Va. - Daisy Hamilton Mason, 78, of 527 Church Avenue, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born May 4, 1922 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Oscar Hamilton and Lottie Johns Hamilton.
She was married
to Cecil Mason, who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in Lynchburg and Danville, and prior to her retirement she was an employee of Dan River Mills. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one sister, Ruby Gibson of Lynchburg and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Pauline Anderson and Hallie Scott; and two brothers, Clarence and Harold Hamilton.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from Schoolfield cemetery with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
Patrick O'Shea McLaughlin
DANVILLE, Va. - Patrick O'Shea McLaughlin, 50, beloved husband of Cynthia Hughes McLaughlin of 232 Virginia Avenue passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2000, on Salt Cay, Turks and Caicos Islands. His death was unexpected.
He was born in Cairo, Egypt, on October 13, 1949.
Patrick was employed as a driver for Walmart out of Hope Mills, N.C. He served from 1968 to 1974 in the U.S. Navy as a QM2C on a tanker in the Atlantic Fleet.
A long-time enthusiast of private railroad cars, he authored a book titled Vanishing Varnish: Business and Private Railroad Cars.
He was also an avid restorer of an antique automobile.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his parents, retired Lt. Commander Walter E. and Evelyn McLaughlin of Danville; one brother, Michael McLaughlin and his wife, Vicki of Manassas, Va.; one sister, Maureen Chaftain and her husband, Thomas of Marietta, Ga.; his mother-in-law, Virginia M. Hughes of Danville; his brothers-in-law, Michael L. Hughes and wife Angela of Danville; R. Dave Hughes of Olympia, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Patricia H. Hennessy and her husband, the Rev. F. Scott Hennessy of Orange, Va.; and three nieces and seven nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 17, at 7:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, on Arnett Boulevard by the Rev. Levi Stroud. Interment
will be conducted later on Salt Cay.

Sara Belle Cather
WINCHESTER, Va. - Sara Belle "Shirkey" Cather, 94, of 1498 Martinsburg Pike, died Thursday, June 15, 2000.
Born Oct. 16, 1905 in Staunton, Va., she was the daughter of John Joseph and Jessie Hewitson Close Shirkey.
She was married
to Charles Irvine Cather on April 2, 1931 in Baltimore. He predeceased her on June 11, 1985.
She was a school teacher with Winchester City Schools at John Kerr Elementary. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as Kindergarten Director for 13 years. She was also a member of the Civic League and the Girl Scouts. She was a past president of the Colonial Garden Club and was a volunteer at Winchester Memorial Hospital. She was a graduate of the State Teachers College in Harrisonburg, known today as James Madison University.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Cather Moses of Danville and Judith Cather Keeling of Virginia Beach; one son, Charles Irvine Cather Jr.; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Omps Funeral Home with the Rev. Carlyle A. McDonald officiating. Interment
will follow in Mt. Hebron cemetery, Winchester.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday from Omps Funeral Home.
