Dennis Gilmer Daniel
DRY FORK, Va. - Dennis Gilmer Daniel age 78 of 4308 Dry Fork Rd, Dry Fork, Virginia died Thursday June 15, 2000 at his Residence.
Mr. Daniel was born July 29, 1921 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
He was the son of the late Dennis Winford Daniel and Emma Lee Powell Daniel.
He was predeceased by his wife Ethel Marie Custer Daniel. He is survived by two daughters, Gail D. Midkiff of Elkin, N.C. and Donna D. Herndon of Chatham; five grandchildren, Rob, Dennis and Laura Midkiff, Lee and Liz Herndon; one great granddaughter, Peyton Midkiff. He was one of the founding memebers of Christ Episcopal Church.
He was a member of the Keep in Touch Club and a 1941 graduate of Whitmell High School and a World War II veteran.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday June 17, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. from the Christ Episcopal Church by the Rev. Cleon Ross.
Interment will be in the Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 4308 Dry Fork Road, Dry Fork, Va.
The family suggests in lieu of flowes memorial contributions be made to the Dry Fork Vol. Fire Department, Chatham Rescue Squad or the Christ Episcopal Church.

Alease H. Edwards
AKRON, Ohio - Mary Alease Edwards, 83, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2000, in Akron, Ohio.
She was born in Republican Grove, Halifax County, Va., on March 21, 1917.
Mrs. Edwards retired in 1978 from the Division of Motor Vehicles in Danville, Va. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Main Street, Danville.
She was predeceased by her husband, George F. Edwards, in 1990; her parents, John T. Holland and Lessie Power Holland, brothers, Marshall and Mitchell; and her sister, Mildred Spencer of Halifax.
She is survived by her son, George and his wife, Joann of Uniontown, Ohio, a sister, Betty Beale of Midlothian, Va.; grandchildren, Jason, Mary Beth, and Mark; and great granddaughter, Makayla Alease, all of Uniontown, Ohio; and loving nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 19, 2000 from Highland Burial Park at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. Joe Northern.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Monday, June 19, 2000 at 12:30 p.m. before the service.

Stella Elliott Saunders
LONG ISLAND, Va. - Mrs. Stella Elliott Saunders, 89, formerly of Long Island, died Thursday at the Lutheran Home in Hickory. Born in Iredell County on January 19, 1911, she was a daughter of the late James Thomas Elliott and Esther Bradford Elliott. She was retired from the textile industry and was a member of Olivet Baptist Church. Her husband, Mr. V. Glen Saunders preceded her in death in 1989.
She was also preceded in death by eight brothers, Ross, J.E. (Monk), W.M. (Mott), D.P. (Pat), F.L. (Gub), E.C. (Pete), J.T. (Buck), and Otha Elliott and two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Hollar and Mrs. Neal Elliott.
Survivors include one son, Larry G. Saunders and his wife, Hollis Ann of Danville, Va., two grandsons, Mark E. Saunders of Sherrills Ford and Larry G. Saunders Jr. and his wife, Tammy of Newton and three great grandchildren, Jennifer Head, Madison and Grayson Saunders. Also surviving is one sister, Mrs. Myrtle Gossett of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Olivet Baptist Church with Dr. David Mills officiating. The body will lie in state for thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Saturday evening at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home.

Marjorie Slayton
DANVILLE, Va. - Marjorie H. Slayton, 77, of 600 Samuel Road, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 27, 1922, she was the daughter of Al Clement Hamlett and Rosa Lee Merricks Hamlett Gravely.
On July 30, 1938, she was married
to Obie Mitchell Slayton, who predeceased her. She lived most of her life in Danville, where she was a housewife and a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church where she served on the church social committee.
Survivors include one daughter, Loretta S. Rimmer of Danville; two sons, Thomas Lee Slayton Sr. and Donnie Wray Slayton, both of Danville; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Essie G. Hankins.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. David Turbyfill and Dr. John H. LaRue officiating. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Graham J. Barkley, Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Graham J. Barkley, Sr., 74, of 222 Astor Court died June 17, 2000, at his residence after months of declining health.
Born October 18, 1925 in Augusta County, Va., he was the son of the late Frank J. and Nannie Hanger Barkley.
He was married
on October 18, 1947 to Eleanor Willis Barkley, who survives.
He had been a member of Trinity United Methodist Church since 1955. In World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Pharmacist Mate 2/C, Special Augmented Hospital #8 on Okinawa. He was a 1950 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy and was the owner/operator of Park Place Pharmacy prior to his retirement from Danville Regional Medical Center. He was a member of the American Legion Post 325 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 647 and a past member of the Virginia Pharmaceutical Association.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Brenda Gaye Barkley, Beverly B. Abbott, and Nanette B. Brown and husband Harry T. Brown of Danville; one son, Graham J. Barkley, Jr. and wife Donna H. Barkley of Durham, N.C.; and three grandchildren Zachary S. Abbott, Katherine M. Barkley, and Graham J. Barkley III.
Other surviving relatives include a brother, Franklin L. Barkley of Suffolk, and three sisters, Marjorie B. Brooks of Stuarts Draft, Va., Rosalie B. Thomas of Staunton, Va., and Ruth B. Hogshead of Front Royal, Va. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Ann B. Hemp.
A funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Levi Stroud and Rev. Linwood Daniel officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park with military honors performed by American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Donald Gray
DANVILLE, Va. - Donald Harper "Hopper" Gray, 53, of 2337 Old Mayfield Road, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three months of declining health.
Born Sept. 13, 1946 in Danville, he was the son of Robert Paul Gray and Fiona Young Gray.
He was married
to Rebecca Dabbs Gray, who survives. He was a 1965 graduate of Tunstall High School, where he played baseball and was a member of the Glee Club. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Ferry Road Friends Church, serving as an Elder and Sunday school teacher. He was a cabinet maker for Commodore Mobile Homes for 29 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one daughter, Kimberly Hope Gray of the residence; one son, Timothy Meade Gray of the residence; one sister, Anne Gray Frye of Burlington, N.C.; five brothers, Ernest Freeman Gray of Kenniwick, Wash., Alfred Joseph Gray of Danville, Robert Paul Gray Jr. of Cascade, Cabell K. Gray of Ringgold and Larry Roger Gray of Danville.
A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday from Ferry Road Friends Church with the Rev. Linwood R. Hairfield Sr. officiating. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

George Jones
CHATHAM, Va. - George Jones, 75, of 3980 Game Reserve Road, Chatham, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 4, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Willis and Melinda Jones.
He was married
to Frances Jones, who predeceased him. He was a member of Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, George M. Jones of Chatham and Howard Venable of Hyattsville, Md.; eight daughters, Norma Jean Stephens and Wallean Johnson, both of Chatham, Gloria Adams and Velma Jones of Danville, Costella Jones of Lynchburg, Susie Smith of Baltimore, Gerdine Bennett of Chatham and Jeanette Clark of Danville; one brother, Harvey Jones of Chatham; two sisters, Lover Kate Guy of Chatham and Irene Harris of Danville; 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. H.G. McGee officiating. Interment
will be in the church cemetery.

Woodrow Kelly
DANVILLE, Va. - Woodrow John Kelly, 81, of 1485 Myrtle Ave., Apt. 2, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, in Danville Regional Medical Center after 18 months of declining health and a six-day stay in the hospital.
Born Feb. 16, 1919, in Bedford County, he was the son of William Franklin Kelly and Minnie Gerushi Gamble Kelly.
On Dec. 8, 1970, he was married
to Mabel Ann Motley Kelly, who survives. He lived most of his life in Danvville and Chatham and was of the Baptist faith. He was retired from Laramore Construction Company where he was a truck driver for 41 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. He participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy as a member of the Engineer Division.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Steven Woodrow Kelly of Richmond; one daughter, Debbie K. Seay of Richmond; two brothers, A.T. Kelly of Greensboro, N.C. and G.W. Kelly of Fayetteville, N.C.; three sisters, Virginia K. Burnette of Roanoke, Mary Jane K. Bunn of Nashville, N.C., and Nancy K. Marshall of Danville, and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Carroll E. Yates Sr. officiating. Military honors will be performed by American Legion Post 1097.
The family will receive friends at the residence and at the residence of her sister, Nancy K. Marshall, 154 Mountain Hill Road, Danville.

Lori Michelle Pleasants
RADFORD, Va. - Lori Michelle Pleasants, 23, of 507 Clement Street Apt. K, died suddenly Thursday, June 15, 2000, at her residence.
Born April 6, 1977, in South Boston, she was the daughter of Rodney Melvin Pleasants, who survives, and Pamela Lawter Pleasants, who predeceased her.
Miss Pleasants lived her life in the Danville area prior to moving to Radford, Virginia, where she had been a student at Radford University.
In addition to her father of Danville, survivors include her stepmother, Donna Carter Pleasants of Danville; paternal grandparents Al and Vianna Pleasants of South Boston; maternal grandmother, Paula Lawter Flood of Bermuda; aunts and uncles Harry and Kathy Talley and Al and Sarah Pleasants, all of South Boston, and one cousin, Bryan Talley of South Boston.
In addition to her mother, she was predeceased by her maternal grandfather Clarence Lawter.
A funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at a Mausoleum at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Tim Nuckles officiating.
