DANVILLE, Va. - Rosanna Chaney, 55, of 124 Fagan Street, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at her residence.
Born February 5, 1947, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James Henry Wise, who predeceased her, and Essie Mae Walker Wise, who survives.
She was married to Roosevelt Chaney, who predceased her.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include three daughters, Vivian Adams, Carolyn Chaney and Lisa Chaney, all of Danville; one son, Curtis Chaney of Danville; three sisters, Inez Anderson, Rosa Henry and Eyvone Crews, all of Danville; seven brothers, Robert Wise of Chatham, Joe Lewis Wise of Java, Willie Wise and Roy Wise, both of Danville, Moses Wise of Martinsville, Keith Wise of Ringgold and Alvin Wise of Cleveland, Ohio.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Calvin White officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Melvin Chattin
DANVILLE, Va. - Melvin Franklin Chattin, 87, of Riverside Health Care, formerly of Holiday Village, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 7, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Chattin and Rebecca Parsons Chattin.
He was married to Bertha Barron Chattin, who survives. He lived most of his life in Danville and worked as a security guard at Dan River Mills. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Frances Parris and Shirley Jordan, both of Danville; one brother, Edward Chattin of Danville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating. Interment will follow.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home.

George Eisele
DANVILLE, Va. - George Joseph Eisele of 1634 Buckhorn Drive, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at the Danville Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born July 22, 1926, in Bronx, N.Y., he was a son of Charles Joseph Eisele and Dorothy McDermott Eisele.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He is survived by two brothers, William Eisele of the residence and Peter Eisele of Florida.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Charles L. Breindel. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Minnie Lee Hayes
DANVILLE, Va. - Minnie Lee Conner Hayes, 83, of 247 Randolph St., died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where she had been a resident for the past two weeks.
Born Oct. 4, 1918, in Danville, she was the daughter of Joseph Eugene Conner and Mary Louis Bomar Conner.
She was married to Jack Irby Hayes Sr., who predeceased her Sept. 12, 1977. She was educated in the Chatham Public Schools and attended Averett College and earned her BA Degree from Lynchburg College and a Masters Degree from the University of Virginia.
She had lived most of her life in Chatham and was employed with the Pittsylvania County School System for 26 years. She taught school at Chatham High School and Gretna High School and was a guidance counselor at Gretna High School and Tunstall High School. After her retirement, she was an active volunteer with the Pittsylvania County Literacy Program. She was a lifelong member of Chatham Presbyterian Church and for the past four years was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Danville.
Survivors include two sons, Jack Irby Hayes Jr. and Walter Eugene Hayes, both of Danville; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one infant daughter, Nancy Jo Hayes.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Elbert Williamson and the Rev. Charles Philips officiating. Interment will follow at Chatham Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral home and other times will be at the residence of Jack Irby Hayes Jr., 245 Linden Drive.

Christopher Hazelwood
CASCADE, Va. - Christopher Lee Hazelwood, 24, of 2395 Gravel Hill Road, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, N.C.
Born December 20, 1977, in Danville, he was a son of Clyde Lee Hazelwood and Mary Wray Hazelwood, who both survive.
Chris lived most of his life in Cascade, Va. and was a graduate of Rockingham County High School. He graduated Magna Cum Laude at Danville Community College. He was a general engineer at American Nursery in Eden, N.C. He attended Hickory Grove United Methodist Church and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include one brother, Andrew David Hazelwood and his wife Adina Hyler Hazelwood of Lynchburg, Va.; two sisters, Rachel Elizabeth Hazelwood and Nichole Ann Hazelwood, both of the residence; and one maternal grandmother, Sallie Higgs Wray of Danville, Va.
The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2002, at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jon Bowman officiating. Interment will follow at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Rockingham County, N.C.

Robert Johnson
DANVILLE, Va. - Rev. Robert Johnson, 65, of 369 Martin Ave. died Monday, June 3, 2002, at his residence.
Born August 19, 1936, in Hartford, Conn., he was a son of Lillian Kennedy Johnson, who survives and Robert Warner Johnson.
He was married to Gloria Swanson Johnson, who survives. He received a Masters Degree in Divinity and Education from Harvard University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. In Hartford, he was associate minister of Union Baptist Church and served as chairman of the trustee board. He served on the board of Directors, Operation Push, Treasurer of the State Conference NAACP in Conn., vice-chairman of Hartford Association of American Baptist churches. He was also chaplain of Hartford Correctional Center. In Danville he was a member of Loyal Baptist Church and of Danville and Vicinity Ministrial Alliance. He was a retired employee of Danville as a personnel specialist, fair housing officer.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Windsor, Conn., include two sons, Robert Edward Johnson Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif. and Peter Gerald Johnson of Harrisonburg; two stepsons, Byron Swanson Bullock of Raleigh, N.C. and Eric Stephen Bullock of Danville; two daughters, Cheryl Johnson Lane of Windsor, Conn. and Joy Denise Johnson of Apex, N.C.; two brothers, Clarence Howard Johnson of Vista, Calif. and Douglas Norman Johnson of Hartford, Conn.; and nine grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Harriet Johnson Oliver and Joy Elizabeth Johnson.
The funeral will be held at 12p.m. Saturday at Loyal Baptist Church with a military flag presentation performed by American Legion Post 29. Dr. R.J. Lea will be officiating Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Home and one hour prior to the funeral. The family will be at the residence.

Doris Jones
DANVILLE, Va. - Doris Mayhew Jones, 45, of 100 Carriage Hill Drive, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Gretna Health Care following seven years of declining health.
Born April 12, 1957, she was a daughter of Percy Ramsey Mayhew, who survives, and Jerleen Ferguson Mayhew, who predeceased her.
She was marreid on September 15, 1996, to Kim David Jones, who survives. She lived her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County areas. Prior to her decline in health, she was employed with the Pluma Corporation as a secretary and receptionist. She was an active member of Shermont Baptist Church and served as choir leader, church secretary, taught Sunday school and was a member of the W.M.U. She graduated from Dan River High School in 1975.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence and her father, include one brother, Donnie Wayne Mayhew of Danville; and one sister, Donna Mayhew Hankins of Danville.
The funeral will be held at 12 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Bill Soyars officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Ernesteen Mize
DANVILLE, Va. - Ernesteen Blair Winn Mize, 79, of Route 8, Mount Cross Road, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at the residence.
Born April 20, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James Lipscomb Blair and Lucy Murphy Blair.
She was first married to Archie I. Winn, who predeceased her Jan. 31, 1965, and later married Albert Mize, who survives. She lived most of her life in Pittsylvania County, where she owned and operated Winn's Store in the Vance community. She moved to Florida in 1976, and returned to make her home in Danville in 1989. She was a member of Sharon Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three stepsons, John Mize of the Mount Hermon community, Ray Winn of Richmond, and Archie Winn Jr. of Trenton, N.J.; one stepdaughter, Catherine W. Oakes of Swansonville; a number of stepgrandchildren; and a number of step great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Allen Holder officiating. Interment will follow.

Oscillee Pruitt
DANVILLE, Va. - Oscillee Stanley Pruitt, 73, of 129 Nelson Avenue, died June 5, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 24, 1929, in McClure, she was a daughter of Garland Stanley and Mattie Powers Stanley.
She was married to Hansford Shelton Pruitt, who predeceased her, and was of the Baptist faith. She was employed by Dan River Mills Inc. prior to retirement and spent most of her life in Danville.
Surivivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include two daughters, Janice P. Ward and Linda P. Scearce, both of Danville; three sisters, Odra S. Lovell of Bedford, Ola F. Trimble of Blacksburg and Evelyn S. Hughes of Providence, N.C.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Randy Sudduth officiating.

Catherine Robertson
DANVILLE, Va. - Catherine Smith Robertson, 90, formerly of 12 Kimberly Ave., died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Oct. 25, 1911, in Cascade, she was the daughter of Floyd S. Smith and Sally Seymour Smith.
She was married to Percy G. Robertson, who predeceased her Nov. 12, 1992. She had resided in Danville since 1967 and was a member of Stokesland Baptist Church. She had been a resident at Roman Eagle Memorial Home for the past three years.
Survivors include one son, Richard Neal Robertson of Barbersville; two daughters, Virginia Emerson of Danville, and Peggy Lewis of Greenville, S.C.; one brother, William Smith of Martinsville; three sisters, Mary Heslep of Elleston, Jettie Taylor, and Hilda Weddle, both of Cascade; eight grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Haywood Alcorn and the Rev. J.C. Raper officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Althea Terry
DANVILLE, Va. - Althea Barber Terry, 76, of 136 Tyler Ave., died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Piney Forest Nursing Center.
Born Aug. 14, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of W. Alexander Barber and Fannie Hooper Barber.
She was married to Cyril Terry, who predeceased her. During World War II, she was employed by RCA and later worked as an elevator operator for the Benjamin Franklin Hotel for 26 years. After moving to Danville, she became a member of the Dayspring Baptist Church.
Survivors include one goddaughter, Mary E. Hicks of Pennsauken, N.J.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Calvin Hines, pastor of Dayspring Baptist Church officiating. Interment will take place Thursday at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Pennsauken, N.J.

Aubrey Young
DANVILLE, Va. - Aubrey Young, 87, of 378 Jules Street died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 30, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Joe Tom Young and Lizzie Maude Mayes Young.
He was married to Dorothy Shelton Young, who predeceased him. He lived in Yanceyville, N.C. for several yeras before moving to Danville. He was a retired tobacco farmer and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII where he received the Victory Medal, the European African Medal and the American Victory Medal. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include five sons, James Brooks Jr. of Richmond, Charles L. Walker of Danville, Leonard G. Young and Ricky M. Young, both of Yanceyville, N.C., Roger G. Young of Elon College, N.C.; two daughters, Tavie Hazelwood of Richmond and Susan Collins of Danville; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his wife and parents, by one daughter, Jane Farmer.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Dan River Post #1097 honor guard.

Lois Finch Chaffin
SALEM, Va. - Lois Finch Chaffin, age 75, of Salem, passed away Monday, December 23, 2002. She was predeceased by her parents, Dillard and Beatrice Finch of Blairs, one brother and three sisters. She is survived by a loving husband and caretaker, Ira W. Chaffin, of the home. A caring son, Bill Chaffin and two precious grandsons, Cory and Adam, all of Richmond. Also surviving are four sisters and their husbands: Bob and Pug Finch of Altavista, Jane and Doug Jones and Rachel Durham, all of Danville, and Ruby and Julian Walton of Sutherlin. Many nieces and nephews survive.
Lois attended Radford College and retired from General Electric with 30 years service. She was a member of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church and an active volunteer with American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels and the Discovery Shop. Her favorite pastimes were Bridge and crusing.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Windsor Hills United Methodist Church Building Fund or to the American Cancer Society. The family would like to thank Dr. Fintel and staff for their care for Lois.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2002, at Windsor Hills United Methodist Church with Dr. William Burrough and Dr. Creed Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park.
