Marie Crews Anderson

RINGGOLD, Va. - Marie Crews Anderson, 80, of 601 Cedar Road, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at the residence of her daughter, 601 Cedar Road, after six months of declining health.

Born September 1, 1919, in the Nathalie Community of Halifax County, she was the daughter of the late James Andrew Crews and the late Loufannie Crews.

In December of 1938, she was married to the late Roy Otis Anderson, who died on August 31, 1993.

Mrs. Anderson had lived most of her life in the Ringgold Community of Pittsylvania County.

She and her late husband Roy Otis Anderson had owned and operated Anderson Grocery Store until their retirement.

Mrs. Anderson was a member of Childress Baptist Church in Nathalie, Va., but she attended the Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church in Ringgold.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Jean A. Barley of Ringgold; five sons, Harold G. Anderson of Danville, Roy Vann Anderson of Greensboro, N.C., Milton Steve Anderson and Ronnie L. Anderson Sr., both of Ringgold, and Bruce A. Anderson of Sutherlin; two brothers, Burwell Crews of Nathalie and Marvin Crews of Gladys; three sisters, Oneida Crews of Nathalie, Christine C. Elder of Gladys, and Inez C. Oakes of South Boston; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one brother, John Crews; two sisters, Novella A. Fears and Josephine A. Saunders; one half brother, Noel Crews; two half sisters, Blanche Oakes and Estelle Saunders, and three grandchildren, Ronnie L. Anderson Jr., Graylon Oscar Anderson, and Barbara Marie Barley.

A funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 23, from the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Burks and the Rev. Thomas Bailey officiating. Interment icon will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence of her daughter Jean A. Barley, 601 Cedar Road in the Mountain Hill Community.

Ula Violet Walker Burnette

DANVILLE, Va. - Ula Violet Walker Burnette, 89, of 1429 Myrtle Avenue died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at her residence after one year of declining health.

Born September 1, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Tom Collins and Kate Aaron Collins.

Mrs. Burnette was a homemaker her entire life and a member of the Third Avenue Christian Church. She was first married to Walter Walker who died April 16, 1953 and in April 1956 married Charles Wesley Burnette, who survives.

In addition to her first husband and parents, she was predeceased by one son, Buford Houston Walker, a daughter, Stella Watkins, a sister, Doris Simpson and two brothers, Clem Collins and Lenford Collins.

In addition to her husband of the home, survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Josephs of Danville and Christine Ford of Blairs; a son-in-law, Elson Ford of Blairs; a son, Wayne Walker of Danville; a daughter-in-law, Judy Walker of Danville; a nephew, Thomas Harville of Danville; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 23 at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Freddy J. Vicks and the Rev. Dr. J. Leroy Clack officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence of a son, 8588 Mount Cross Road.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Virginia 24541, or Tunstall Fire & Rescue, P.O. Box 575, Danville, Virginia 24543.

William Davis

DANVILLE, Va. - William C. Davis, 70, of 134 James Road, died Monday, June 19, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health since 1989 and a four-day stay in the hospital.

Born Dec. 24, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Ross Pipkin Davis and Estelle Shelton Davis.

He was married to Ruby Alice Holley Davis, who survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He lived in Westover Hills for many years, and prior to his retirement, he worked at Dan River Inc for 20 years. He was a member of Welcome Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by three sons, Donnie Davis and Mike Davis, both of Danville and Ken Davis of Ringgold; six sisters, Christine Gauldin and Josie Koger, both of Danville, Mary Fulbright, Ruth Mangrum and Frances Owen, all of Newport News and Odell Jones of Prospect; three grandchildren and one step-grandson.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Joyce Ann Pierce.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Hussey officiating. Interment icon will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors performed by American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard.

The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Dorothy Dickerson

CLOVER, Va. - Dorothy Dickerson, 94, died Saturday, June 14, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital, South Boston.

She was born Oct. 23, 1905, in Halifax County.

Survivors include three daughters, Gladys Pleasant of South Boston, Maggie Aiken of Clover, and Agnes Telfair of Queens, N.Y.; one son, William Dickerson of Clover; one sister, Edmonia Morton of New York, and 15 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Crawford, Garrett, and Burton Funeral Chapel, Halifax, with Brother Douglas Stacy officiating. Interment icon will be in Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetery, Clover.

The family will receive friends at the residence of a son, William Dickerson, 1192 Rev. Coleman Road, Clover.

Crawford, Garrett & Burton Funeral Services are in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Boaze Gatewood

CHATHAM, Va. - Gladys Boaze Gatewood age 85 of Chatham, Virginia died June 20, 2000 at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home Danville.

Mrs. Gatewood was born September 12, 1914 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

She was the daughter of the late Octavious Boaze and Posie Myers Boaze.

She was the wife of the late White Isaac Gatewood. Mrs. Gatewood is survived by two daughters, Barbara G. Rowles and her husband C.C. Rowles, of Gretna and Patsy G. Hayden and her husband Walton L. Hayden, of Richmond; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her sisters and brothers.

She was a member of Salem Church of Christ. Funeral Services will be conducted Friday June 23, 2000 11:00 A.M. from the Salem Church of Christ by Rev. Larry L. Owen.

Interment will be in the Chatham Burial Park. The family will receive friends at her residence.

The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contribution be made to the Salem Church of Christ. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Stewart Knight

DANVILLE, Va. - Stewart Lee Knight, 47, of 155 Swanson St., died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 8, 1952, in Danville, he was a son of George Knight and Darlene Wilson Knight, who survives.

He was married to Jackie Green Knight, who also survives. He was employed by DIMON prior to a disabling illness.

In addition to his mother and wife, survivors include one sister, Iris Gillispie of Danville, and two brothers, George Knight Jr. and Andrew Knight, both of Danville.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. Osco Gardin officiating. Interment icon will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his mother, Darlene Knight, 1017 West Stokes St., and other times at the residence.

Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edwin Sidney Martin Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Edwin Sidney Martin Jr., 50, of 161 Hawks Ridge Road died suddenly Thursday, June 21, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born January 20, 1950, in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Edwin Sidney Martin and Carolyn A. (Bolie) Martin, who survives.

He was married to Deborah Ferguson Martin, who survives.

Mr. Martin had coached football and wrestling at Brookville High School before moving to Danville to become Head Football coach at George Washington High School. He was well known throughout the state of Virginia for his encouragement of youth academics and athletics.

In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Lynchburg, survivors include two sons, Scott Ferguson Martin of the residence and Edwin Sidney Martin III of Richmond; a daughter-in-law, Catherine Dupree Martin of Richmond; one sister, Carolyn (Biddy) Martin of Ithaca, N.Y.; one grandson, Edwin Sidney Martin IV, and one granddaughter, Anna Catherine Martin.

In addition to his father, he was predeceased by one brother, Carter DeWitt Martin.

A funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 23, from the auditorium of George Washington High School with the Rev. Frederick Vicks officiating.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. in the White's United Methodist Church cemetery on English Tavern Road in Rustburg, Va.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church, and other times at the residence.

The family will receive friends after the graveside service at the home of Eddie's mother, 245 Timberlake Drive, Lynchburg.

The family suggests that those wishing to make a memorial contribution to please consider the George Washington High School Fan Club, Broad Street Danville, Va. 24541, the Mount Hermon Fire Department, 4268 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, Va. 24540 or the American Heart Association, 1900 Tate Springs Road, Lynchburg, Va. 24501.

Lucy Bennett

DANVILLE, Va. - Lucy Breedlove Bennett, 77, of 15284 Mount Cross Road, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 22, 1923 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Marsellous Breedlove and Cora Tarpley.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include one son, Jessie Morrison of Dry Fork; two daughters, Frances Walton of Dry Fork and Rosa Martin of Danville; two brothers, Floyd Breedlove and William E. Tarpley, both of Danville; five sisters, Hope F. Breedlove, Mary White, Mattie Cabell and Bendie Hall, all of Danville and Della Brown of Buffalo, N.Y.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from Bibleway Cathedral with Apostle L.G. Campbell officiating. Interment icon will follow in Highland Burial Park.

A viewing will be held from 4 p.m. Saturday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence.

Gary Bowyer

HURT, Va. - Gary Monroe Bowyer, 57, of 681 Jasper Road died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born Nov. 22, 1942, in Roanoke, he was the son of Ralph and Daphine Bowyer, who survive.

He was married to Rachel Burch Bowyer, who also survives. He was an active member of Monte Vista Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, mission leader, and choir member. He was an avid reader and sports enthusiast who enjoyed coaching at the Altavista Area YMCA for over 20 years. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and retiree of The Lane Company.

In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include one son, Robbie Monroe Bowyer of Hurt; one daughter, Linda Bowyer Jefferson of Sandy Level; one brother, Dan Bowyer of South Haven, Miss., and two grandsons.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Monte Vista Baptist Church with the Rev. Latta Terry and the Rev. Arnold Bradley officiating. Interment icon will follow in the Oronoco Church of the Brethren cemetery, Amherst County, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 16.

The family received friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at Finch & Finch Funeral Home, Altavista, and other times at the residence.
