Ruth Herndon Wood

DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Herndon Wood, 80, of 5972 Whitmell School Road, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 20, 1919 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Lester Herndon and Janie Hutcherson Herndon.

She was married to Thomas J. Wood, who predeceased her on Nov. 12, 1983.

She lived in the Whitmell community most of her life, where she was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Roger Allan Wood of Whitmell; two daughters, Laura W. Gilliam of Whitmell and Sandra L. Baker of Staunton, Ill.; one brother, John "Johnny" Herndon of Dry Fork; and six grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from Swicegood Funeral Home with the Rev. Gilbert Hawks and the Rev. Charlie Cundiff officiating. Interment icon will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7:30-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence.

The family of Ruth Herndon Wood suggests that memorial contributions be made to Tunstall Fire & Rescue, P.O. Box 575, Danville, Va., 24543.

Ramsey Brooks

CHATHAM, Va. - Ramsey White Brooks, 89, of 272 Fair View Road, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 6, 1910 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Chesley White Brooks and Izella Keen Brooks.

He was married to Lillie Jennings Brooks, who predeceased him. He later married Arlene Wilford Brooks, who survives.

In addition to his wife of Chatham, he is survived by three daughters, Alease B. Powell of Danville, Gay B. Eanes of Gretna and Phyllis B. Kennedy of Troutville; one son, Ramsey W, Brooks Jr. of Chatham; three stepdaughters, Marie D. Beyer of Suffolk, Sandra D. Richards of Hardy and Kathleen Mahathey of Westminster, Calif.; four stepsons, Robert Malpass of Fayetteville, N.C., Wayne Malpass of Chatham, Thomas Dawson of Gibsonville, N.C., and Jimmy Coffin of Jasper, Ga.; one sister, Ruby Brown of Altavista; one brother, Lloyd J. Brooks of Chatham; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and 15 step-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was predeceased by one daughter, May Powell and three brothers, Irona Brooks, Howard Brooks and Edward Brooks.

He was retired from Saunders Lumber Co. in Chatham after 46 years. He was of the Baptist faith.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from Hillcrest Burial Park with Curtis English officiating. Interment icon will follow in Hillcrest Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Monday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Tommie Hairston

DANVILLE, Va. - Tommie L. Hairston, 76, died June 24, 2000 at the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke, Va.

Born Oct. 13, 1923, he was the son of John Henry Hairston and Lessie Ferrell Hairston.

He was a member of Jones Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, the Almagro Masonic Lodge No. 217 and American Legion Post 29.

Survivors include one daughter, Sylvia W. Hairston and one granddaughter, both of Danville.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from Oak Hill cemetery with the Rev. Hayes McConnell and the Rev. Jerome Morris officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, 225 Spruce St. All flowers should be sent to the daughter's residence.

Beavers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Hill

CONWAY, S.C. - Joseph William "J.W." Hill, 82, of 872 Singleton Ridge Road, died Saturday, June 24, 2000 at Sterling House.

He was born May 1, 1918 in Lawrenceville, Va.

He was a member of Union United Church of Christ, Virgilina Masonic Lodge #248 for 54 years, and Woodmen of the World Lodge #106 for 25 years.

Prior to his retirement, he was a merchant for Hills Grocery. He was also a U.S. Armed Forces veteran.

Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Hill Proffitt of Conway; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from Union United Church of Christ.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Brooks Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Patrick Henry Boys Home, Route 2, Box 125, Brookneal, Va., 24528 or the Virgilina Masonic Lodge, c/o Ryland Harris, 2929 Halifax Road, South Boston, Va., 24592.

Harvey Edgar Hinton

DANVILLE, Va. - Harvey Edgar Hinton, age 83, of 333 Raintree Road, died Sunday, June 25, 2000 at his residence after months of declining health.

Born on September 12, 1916, in Danville, Va., he was the son of William Abel Hinton and Mary Haraway Hinton.

He was married to Helen Wright Hinton, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Pamela Hinton Trantham, son-in-law, James Trantham, two grandchildren, Ashley and Matthew Trantham, all of Zebulon, N.C.; also nieces and a nephew.

Mr. Hinton spent his life in Danville and retired from the U.S. Postal service after 36 years.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a medical technician with the Army 181st Ordnance Battalion in England, France, Belgium and Germany.

Mr. Hinton was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he has served on various committees and as an occasional Sunday School Teacher.

He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, American Legion Post 325 and Woodmen of the World.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 27, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Levi Stroud and the Rev. Linwood Daniel. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home Monday night from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for Hospice Support Services, P.O. Box 2713, Danville, Va. 24541.

Sterling Smith

SOUTH HILL, Va. - Mr. Sterling "Tadpole" Smith, age 76 of South hill died Saturday, June 24. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca S. Smith of the home, three daughters, Becky S. Lewis of Alberta, Mary P. Smith of Danville, and Patsy G. Smith of South Hill; and four grandchildren, Norman "Scooter" Scott, Francis L. Lewis Jr., Joseph E. Lewis and Sterling "Tad" Lewis.

Mr. Smith was a retired electrical welder and a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, June 27 at 11:00 a.m. by Pastor Phillip Upton at Bethel Baptist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7-8:30 at Bethel Baptist Church located on Rt. 4 in Baskerville, Va.

Louise Swann

DANVILLE, Va. - Louise Annie Swann, 79, of 197 Chatelaine Avenue, died Thursday, June 22, 2000 at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born Apr. 18, 1921 in Blanche, N.C., she was the daughter of Earline Lea and Mary Alice Lipscomb.

She was married to Charlie Swann, who predeceased her. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and later a member of Camp Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She attended Caswell County schools and graduated from Maco Beauty School. She was an employee of Dan River Inc. for many years.

Survivors include six sisters, Mary Frances Camp of Bloomfield, Conn., Ada Womack of Southwyck, N.Y., Betty Strong of Queens, N.Y., Jerneata Lee Dingle of Reidsville, N.C., Margaret Stephens of Providence, N.C. and Alean Lea of Danville.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from the Chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home. Interment icon will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Harvey Edgar Hinton

Irene Hill Womack

DANVILLE, Va. - Irene Hill Womack, 89, of 1170 South Boston Road died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after declining health since March.

Born February 2, 1911, in Danville, she was the daughter of Thomas Walter Hill and Josephine Vaughn Hill.

On August 26, 1942, she was married to John Robert Womack, who survives.

Mrs. Womack lived her entire life in the Danville area where prior to her retirement she was employed as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Mrs. Womack was a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and served as a choir member. She was a member of The Senior Citizens, March of Dimes, and the AARP.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Nancy C. Womack of the residence and Betty W. Adkins of Dry Fork; one son-in-law, Willard Adkins of Dry Fork, and one grandson, Jeff Adkins of Dry Fork.

She was predeceased by four brothers and one sister.

A funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Clarence Jackson and the Rev. Steve Lewis officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va., 24543.

Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
