Fannie Adkins
GRETNA, Va. - Fannie Gibson Adkins, 85, formerly of Gretna, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born March 11, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James Gibson and Mattie Moore Gibson.
She was married
to David Crockett Adkins, who predeceased her. She was a member of Sandy Level Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors include six sons, Bill Adkins of Hurt, J.B. Adkins of Sutherlin, Emmett Adkins, Riley Adkins and David Adkins, all of Danville and Buddy Adkins of Gretna; two daughters, Irene Tuck and Carolyn Falls, both of Gretna; one brother, Roy Gibson of Chatham; one sister, Callie G. Hedrick of Gretna; 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from Colbert-Moran Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Ashworth and the Rev. R.G. Rowland officiating. Interment
will follow in Greenpond Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence of Carolyn Falls, 728 Belair Road, Gretna.
Rubelle Burrell
DANVILLE, Va. - Rubelle Cobbs Burrell, 86, of 1200 South Main Street, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 9, 1914, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Johnny Cobbs and Leslie Rice Cobbs.
She was married
to Robert Amos Burrell Sr., who predeceased her.
Survivors include one daughter, Nettie Burrell of Danville; two sons, Robert A. Burrell Jr. and Alphonzo Burrell, both of Danville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church, with the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

John Whitehead Motley
CHATHAM, Va. - John Whitehead Motley, 61, of 680 Halifax Road, Chatham, died Monday June 26, 2000. Born in Pittsylvania County March 31, 1939 he was the son of the late Blair Motley Sr. and is survived by his mother, Dorothy Whitehead Motley of Chatham. He is also survived by his wife, Nancie Morton Motley of the residence, one daughter, Michele Motley Wilson and her husband, Frank Wilson, of Greenville, S.C., two sons, John Whitehead Motley, Jr. of Cleveland, TN and Latane Mark Motley of Chatham, one sister, Dorothy M. Finch of Danville, and two grandchildren, Blair McCall Wilson and Nancie Ellington Wilson, both of Greenville, SC.
He attended St. Christopher School in Richmond, VA and graduated from Hargrave Military Academy in 1959, where he was an outstanding football player.
For many years, he owned and operated Motley's General Store in Shockoe, VA where he was involved in the family farming operation. He was a prominent Tobacconist who co-owned and operated Motley's Tobacco Warehouse with his wife, Nancie. He was a founding member of Concerned Friends for Tobacco and an active participant of the Bright Belt Warehouse Association. He was also a member of Virginia Tobacco Grower's Association, Piedmont Warehouse Association, Virginia Tobacco Warehouse Association and the Danville Warehouse Association. He was well loved and respected not only by the farming community but by the buying companies as well.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Chatham Presbyterian Church 2 p.m. on Friday, June 30th by the Reverend Walker Pettyjohn and the Reverend James Bullock. Interment
will be in the Chatham Burial Park. The family received friends at Scott Funeral Home 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday and will receive friends at other times at the residence.

Lue Anne Robinson
PHILADELPHIA - Lue Ann Robinson, 88, of 1819 W. Stile Street, and formerly of Chatham, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, in Chestnut Hill Nursing Home.
Born July 12, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Samuel T. Simmons and Nannie Craft Simmons.
She was married
to Frank Robinson, who survives.
In addition to her husband of Philadelphia, she is survived by a sister, Hannah Fuller of Chatham.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three sisters, Mary Simmons, Dorothy L.S. Minter and Elnora Reavis; and three brothers, Milo, Richard, and Teddy Simmons.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from Miller Funeral Home with Dr. H.G. McGhee Sr. officiating. Interment
will follow in the Simmons Family cemetery, Chatham.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Hannah Fuller, 2013 Concord Road, Chatham.
Cynthia Keatts Hill
DANVILLE, Va. - Cynthia Keatts Hill, age 73, of 244 Jordan Street, died Friday afternoon June 30, 2000 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina, after a decline in health for 15 years.
Mrs. Hill was born in Pittsylvania County on June 18, 1927, a daughter of the late David Keatts and Callie Moorefield Keatts.
She married
Newton Henry Hill on September 14, 1946 who survives.
Mrs. Hill had spent most of her life in Danville where she had retired on disability 15 years ago from Dan River, Inc., and was a member of Temple Baptist Church.
Survivors in addition to her husband of the residence include two daughters: Carolyn H. Jones of Chatham, and Rita H. Moore of Ruffin, North Carolina, and one son: David A. Hill of Danville, and four brothers: Clay Keatts of Cascade, and David Keatts of Danville, and Lewis Keatts of Rocky Mount, and Elmer Keatts of Wirtz, and four sisters: Eva McDaniel of Cascade and Nancy Owen of Blairs, and Matilda Brummett of Danville, and Ruth Woodson of Ruffin, North Carolina, and four Grandchildren: Carabae J. Williamson and Christina J. Flippen both of Chatham, and Jason L. Moore of Ruffin, North Carolina, and Darren C. Moore of Dry Fork, and two Great Grandchildren: Rannon Jones and Cynthia McKenzi Flippen, and two Step Great Grandchildren: Katrina Bottoms and B.J. Bottoms.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Roy Newton. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 P.M., and other times at the residence.

James L. Tarpley
RICHMOND, Va. - James L. Tarpley, 76, formerly of Danville died Friday, June 30, 2000.
He was a son of Walter Hughes and Carice Collie Tarpley.
A funeral will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Woody Funeral Home, Parham Chapel, Richmond. Interment
will be in Riverview cemetery.

Lin Wilkinson
DANVILLE, Va. - Linwood S. "Lin" Wilkinson, 89, of 309 Swain Drive, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Sept. 10, 1910, in Danville, he was a son of Littleton Sidney Wilkinson and Nora Ann Russell Wilkinson.
On August 1, 1941, he was employed by Virginia Tobacco Company as factory foreman and Green Market Bookkeeper on the Southern Markets.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and afterwards returned to Virginia Tobacco and worked in the administrative arm of the company until 1953, when he was named Export Manager of the Sales Department. In 1957, he was elected Assistant Vice President and Vice President in 1964. On Nov. 20, 1972, he was named acting President and Chief Executive Officer until retirement in Sept. 1973.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #325 and was a lifetime member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church where he was a member of the Chapel Bible Class.
Survivors include one brother, Woodrow "Woody" Wilkinson, and one sister, Russell Wilkinson Allen, both of Danville.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee Ellison and the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
Military honors will be performed by American Legion Post #325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Carl Joyce
BASSETT, Va. - Carl Cephus Joyce, 78, of 6401 Stones Dairy Road died Friday, June 30, 2000, at Virginia Medical Center, Salem.
Born Feb. 2, 1922, in Henry County, he was a son of James Cephus Joyce and Lucy Turner Joyce Shore.
He was married
to Virginia Dove Joyce, who survives. He was retired from Bassett Walker Knitting Company after 25 years of service and was a member of First Baptist Church of Bassett. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, in the Pacific Theater.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Audrey Tatum of Collinsville; two sons, Lynwood E. Joyce of Danville and Alfred D. Joyce of Bassett; two stepsons, George L. Hopkins of Collinsville and the Rev. Jerry W. Hopkins of Clayton, N.C.; three sisters, Wootsie Foley of Collinsville, Wilda Clifton of Bassett and Mabel Shore Maone of Pennsylvania; three brothers, John R. Shore of Patrick Springs, and T. Bernard Joyce and Clyde D. Joyce, both of Bassett; six step grandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sons, Joseph and Joshua Joyce.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Collins Funeral Chapel with Pastor Ron Peal and the Rev. Jerry Hopkins officiating. Interment
will be in Mt. Herman Church of the Brethren cemetery.

Herman Morgan
DANVILLE, Va. - Herman Lee Morgan, 73, of 504 Ingram St. died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 17, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Allen M. Morgan and Bertha E. Long Morgan.
On April 6, 1968, he was married
to Celmer Maddox Morgan, who survives. He lived all his life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County area. He was employed by Dan River Inc. for a number of years as a loom fixer, prior to being employed by P.L. Anderson Construction Company where he worked as a carpenter until his retirement with over 20 years of service. He was a life member of the Ballard Pruitt Post 647, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of American Legion Post 1097. He was of the Baptist faith. He also served with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, James Preston Morgan of Danville; one daughter, Judy Kay M. Keaton of Roanoke; one brother, William I. Morgan of Danville; two sisters, Mary M. Goodman of Danville and Pauline M. Charles of Richmond, and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, Allen M. Morgan Jr. and two sisters, Mabel M. Hargrave and Martha M. Rushing.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Carl Burger and the Rev. Charles Swanson officiating. Interment
will be at Highland Burial Park with military honors performed by American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard.

Bessie Price
DRY FORK, Va. - Bessie Taylor Price, 90, of 1576 Waller Lane died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at her residence.
Born Oct. 7, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Stuart and Nannie Taylor.
She was married
to Ulyssess "Scootie" Price, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and member of Guildfield Missionary Baptist Church. She was the last survivor of her immediate family.
Survivors include four daughters, Barbara P. Echols, Nannie Kate Jones, Bessie E. Tarpley and Roberta Lovelace, all of Danville/Pittsylvania County; 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two daughters, Lucy Fitz and Rosetta Price; one son, William Ulysses Price, and four siblings.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Guildfield Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Vann II officiating. Interment
will follow in the Fultz Family cemetery.
