Cheney Lea
DANVILLE, Va. - Cheney Walker Lea, 86, of Roman Eagle Memorial Home, and formerly of 314 Hawthorne died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 5, 1914, in Griffin, Ga., she was the daughter of Charles Robert Walker and Kittie Britt Walker.
She was married
to Henry Dirkson Lea, who predeceased her.
She was educated at Randolph Macon Woman's College and the University of Virginia. She taught Latin for many years at George Washington High School.
Survivors include one son, Thomas Dirkson Lea, and two granddaughters.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Kittie Louise Lea, and one son, Henry Walker Lea.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany with the Rev. James W. Mathieson officiating.
Garnet Lynskey
DANVILLE, Va. - Garnet S. Lynskey, 84, of 836 Gemstone Lane, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Nov. 8, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Patrick Emmett Lynskey and Lou Soyars Lynskey.
She was a member of Vandola Baptist Church, where she held several positions in the WMU and taught Sunday school for over 50 years. She was the teacher of the Ollis Bible Class.
She lived her entire life in the Bachelor's Hall Community. Prior to her retirement, she worked in the payroll department of Dan River Inc.
Survivors include two sisters, Ruby L. McCubbins and Macie L. Earp, both of Danville, and two nieces and one nephew.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Pearl L. Davis and Opal L. Taylor.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry D. Farrell and the Rev. Dr. J. Leroy Clack. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Vandola Baptist Church.

Early Wayne Watlington
DANVILLE, Va. - Early Wayne Watlington, age 26, was found at his residence, Tuesday, July 4, 2000.
He was born in Danville, Va. on March 9, 1974, a son of Wayne Pendleton Watlington and Barbara Cook Watlington.
Mr. Watlington was employed with Burlington Industries and was of the Baptist Faith.
In addition to his parents he is survived by two sisters, Kim Payne, Danville, and his twin sister, Tammy Moore, Pelham, N.C.; brother-in-law, Derek Moore, of Pelham, N.C.; nephew, Jeremy Payne of Danville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Mitchell Cifers. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Thursday night at Townes Funeral Home from 7:00 to 8:30 and at other times will be at the residence, 32 Philips Road, Providence, N.C.
Matilda Waller Brumfield
GRETNA, Va. - Ida Matilda Waller Brumfield, age 85 of Gretna died Thursday July 6, 2000. She was the wife of the late B.F. "Pat" Brumfield, Jr.
Born July 6, 1915 in Halifax County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Edward "Buck" Waller and Rose Emily Hunt Waller.
She attended Averett College and worked as a lab technician for Burlington Industries. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Gretna and was a member of Eastern Star Chapter 118.
She is survived by three sons, R. Neil Brumfield and his wife Mary Ann of Bridge City, Texas, Wayne M. Brumfield and his wife Judy of Gretna, and Robert F. Brumfield and his wife Helen of Roswell, Ga.; one brother Phillip Waller of Cocoa, Fla.; three sisters, Clara Davis of Concord, N.C., Margaret Wright of Banning, Calif., and Eloise Arthur of Richmond; five grandchildren, Martha Lecik of Gretna, Carl Brumfield of Roanoke, Ben Brumfield of Austin, Texas, and Justin Brumfield and John Brumfield, both of Roswell, Ga.; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, R.E. "Jack" Waller, Jr. and Raymond Waller, and three sisters, Lucille Rosen, Mozelle Moorefield, and Bessie Harris.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 8, 2000 in the First Baptist Church of Gretna by the Reverend W.D. Lilly and the Reverend Glen Graves. Interment
will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Friday.

Harry Lee Coleman
DANVILLE, Va. - Harry Lee Coleman, 84, of 101 Berkley Street died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after three years of declining health. He had been a resident of Roman Eagle for one week.
Born September 16, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Ballard Comer Coleman and Rosa Robertson Coleman.
On March 9, 1939, he was married
to Jessie Wingfield Coleman, who survives.
Mr. Coleman had lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. He was employed with Abercrombie Oil Company where he worked as a Transport Operator for a number of years until his retirement.
He was a member of West End Christian Church where he served as Deacon, Usher, Church Elder and in a number of church Departments. He was awarded Trustee Emeritus of the Church.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sally Coleman Shields and James E. (Jim) Shields of Danville; two brothers, Rawley Coleman of Culpeper and Billy Coleman of Danville; two sisters, Louise C. Patton of Durham, N.C. and Adalia C. Hubbard of Richmond; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Coleman Shields, and a grandson, John Shepherd Shields.
A funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. June Haislip Hughes and the Rev. Dana Hunt officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence of his daughter, Sally C. Shields, 123 Updike Place, Danville.

Caroline Lawrence
DANVILLE, Va. - Caroline Elizabeth Lawrence, stillborn infant, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was the daughter of Kevin Dale Lawrence and Scottie Emerson Lawrence.
In addition to her parents, survivors include maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Irby Emerson of Java; paternal grandparents, Elmer S. Lawrence and Bonnie Setliff Lawrence of Ruffin, N.C., and paternal great-grandmother, Mary D. Lawrence of Ruffin, N.C.
She was predeceased by a grandfather, Leonard T. Emerson.
A graveside service will be held at noon Friday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 2512 Beechwood Lane.

Chanie Mann
CHATHAM, Va. - Chanie Clay Mann, 65, of 220 Oak Grove Lane died Thursday, July 6, 2000, in Eldercare, Franklin County.
Born April 7, 1935 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Robert Clay and Mary Holmes Clay.
She was married
to Paul Henry Mann, who predeceased her. She was a member of Round Pond Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Russell Mann of Chatham and John Mann of Pittsville; two daughters, Virginia Waters of Pittsville and Katherine Thompson of Gretna; two brothers, Gene Clay of Hillsborough, N.C. and Anderson Clay of Gretna; four sisters, Fleecy Clay, Pearlie Barbour, and Willie Murphy, all of Gretna, and Margaret Childrey of Halifax; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pittsville Holiness Church cemetery with the Rev. Woodrow Tuck officiating.

Lucille Nichols
CLOVER, Va. - Lucille Bass Nichols, 85, of 1099 Mt. Laurel Road, died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born August 24, 1914, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Sam Bass and Elsie Canada Bass.
She was married
to Bryan W. Nichols, who survives. She was a retired teacher with the Halifax County Public School System. She was a member of Clover Baptist Church where she was a member of the Baptist Women Association.
She was also a member of Halifax County Retired Teachers Association, Clover Volunteer Fire Department Aux., and was treasurer of the Clover cemetery Association.
In addition to her husband of Clover, survivors include one son, Sam B. Nichols of Martinsville; one brother, John W. Bass of Clover; one sister, Alyce B. Sydenstricker of Roanoke, and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Clover Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Walker officiating. Interment
will be in Clover cemetery.

Lettie Walton Turner
RINGGOLD, Va. - Lettie Walton Turner, 85, of 721 Little Creek Road, died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville/Henry County after four years of declining health. Mrs. Turner had lived at the Beverly Health Care Center in Martinsville for the last four years.
Born May 8, 1915, in Keeling, she was the daughter of Junnie Walton and Mattie White Walton.
She was married
to Jack Ottoway Turner, who predeceased her Nov. 8, 1987.
Mrs. Turner had lived her entire life in the Danville area and prior to her retirement had worked as a beauty operator and later as a sitter.
She was a member of the former Southall Baptist Church and more recently attended the Church of Truth on Franklin Turnpike.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Gay H. Boswell and William H. "Pete" Boswell of Ringgold; two grandchildren, Steven B. Boswell of Midlothian and Laura B. Davis of Ringgold; two sisters, Betty H. McLaughlin of Keeling and Audrey H. Walker of Ringgold, and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Earl Walton, Pete Walton, and William Hardy.
A funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Mausoleum Chapel at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Ira Yeatts officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
