DANVILLE, Va. - Arnold Rupert Edmonds, 65, of 219 Ivy Street, died Friday, July 7, 2000, at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Born May 16, 1935, in Danville, he was a son of Charlie Edmonds and Bessie Ware Edmonds.
He was married
to Mae Frances McCain Edmonds, who predeceased him. He was a laborer for Dan River Mills.
Survivors include four sons, Allen Edmonds, Tony Edmonds and Michael Edmonds, all of Danville and Arnold Edmonds Jr. of Martinsville; five daughters, Cora Bates, Wendy Petty, Tonga Coleman, Shelby Edmonds and RaShaunda Pinchback, all of Danville; four brothers, Leon Edmonds, Kenny Edmonds and Stanley Edmonds, all of Danville and Carl Edmonds of Burlington, N.C.; and four sisters, Sandra McCain and Yvonne Ross, both of Danville, Darneice Staples of Roanoke and Ernestine Davis of Ringgold.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from White Rock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Walter Tinsley officiating. Interment
will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence.
Anthony Gill
DANVILLE, Va. - Anthony Chris Gill, 29, of 547 Westover Drive died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 10, 1970, in Danville, he was a son of Jerry Wayne Gill and Patricia Spencer Gill, who survive.
He was married
to Angela Waller Gill, who survives. Most of his life was spent in Danville where he was a welder for Mt. Cross Welding.
In addition to his parents of Axton and wife of Danville, survivors include one son, Adam Christopher Gill of Danville; one brother, Kenneth Patrick Gill of Axton; maternal grandmother, Ocie W. Spencer of Danville and paternal grandmother, Beatrice Chenault Gill of Danville.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John H. Meadows and the Rev. Michael Walker officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Beatrice C. Gill, 717 Arlington Road.
Leatha Hancock
DANVILLE, Va. - Leatha Petty Hancock, 71, of 1059 Ferry Road, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after several years of declining health.
Born Feb. 22, 1929, in Draper, N.C., she was a daughter of Paul Petty and Dovie Fain Petty.
She was married
to Woodrow Hancock, who predeceased her on Aug. 6, 1987. She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a unit secretary for Danville Regional Medical Center before retiring. She was a member of Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Woodrow Franklin Hancock and James Lester Hancock, both of Danville and Paul Ray Hancock of Providence, N.C.; three daughters, Bernice Kay Dorsett and Dovie Delores Cannon, both of Danville and Barbara Ann Graveley of Greenwood, S.C.; one brother, David Petty of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Louise Pickeral of Danville and Evon Bridges of Yanceyville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from Swicegood Funeral Home with Elder Danny Parker, Elder Kenny Bowles and Brother Wesley Moore officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Nadine Lanum
DANVILLE, Va. - Nadine Towler Lanum, 49, of 206 Astor Court died Friday, July 7, 2000, at her residence after several years of declining health.
Born March 31, 1951, in Danville, she was a daughter of Amil Towler and Gladys Jones Towler.
On Feb. 16, 1973, she was married
to Lewis S. Lanum, who survives. She lived her entire life in Danville where she worked at Danville communications center as a P.B.X. operator until her health failed. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Creig A. Lanum; two sisters, Florence T. Allen and Marie T. Hardy, and one brother, Johnny B. Towler. All survivors are of Danville.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Betty Bailey and Charletta Towler, and one brother, Landon W. Towler.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce and Brother John H. Lanum III officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Roy William Chandler
DANVILLE, Va. - Roy William Chandler, 91, of Riverside Healthcare Center, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Chandler was born on January 25, 1909 in Halifax County, Virginia the son of Matthew C. Chandler and Grace Dunn Chandler.
He was married
on August 5, 1932 to Marguerite Clark Chandler who predeceased him on March 20, 1991.
Mr. Chandler was employed from 1928 to 1973 by Export Leaf Tobacco Company in Danville, South Boston and Richmond. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, of Danville.
Mr. Chandler is survived by one sister, Mrs. Ellen Chandler Ridgeway of Danville, and a nephew and niece.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2000, 2:00 p.m. at Highland Burial Park. Rev. Elbert M. Williamson will be conducting the services.
The family will receive friends, Monday, July 10, 2000, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations be made to First Presbyterian Church, the Danville Life Saving Crew or a charity of your choice.
Lester McKinley Dunn
RINGGOLD, Va. - Lester McKinley Dunn, 101, of 908 Sandy Creek Church Road, died July 8, 2000, at his residence, after several years of declining health.
Born August 21, 1898 in Halifax County, he was a son of the late George R. Dunn and the late Ella Thompson Dunn.
Mr. Dunn had lived all of his life in the Ringgold Community of Pittsylvania County. He had worked as a tobacco farmer and for the Abner Foster Saw Mill until his retirement. Mr. Dunn was the oldest member of Ringgold Baptist Church having joined in 1908 with a membership of 92 years. He had served several terms as a deacon.
He was married
to the late Elizabeth Barker Dunn on November 16, 1921. She predeceased him on June 7, 1987.
Survivors include three daughters, Dora E. Dunn of the residence, Eunice Foster and spouse Abner of Ringgold and Margaret Ford and spouse Hugh of Memphis, Tenn.; two grandsons, John Foster and spouse Diane, and David Foster and spouse Betty Jo, all of Ringgold; two granddaughters, Anne Carson and husband Carl of Collierville, Tenn. and Joan Ford of Memphis; and seven great-grandchildren, Matt, Ben and Brian Foster, Tracey Ewing, Caren Carson, Katie Stewart and Amy Chinn.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, from the Ringgold Baptist Church, with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Velna Brightwell Gardner
DANVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Velna Brightwell Gardner, age 79, formerly of 142 Lamberth Drive, died Sunday afternoon July 9, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had resided at Outlook Point for the past two months.
Mrs. Gardner was born in Rockingham County, North Carolina on July 22, 1920, a daughter of the late Charles E. Brightwell and Ruth Dix Brightwell. She was formerly married
to Noell Gardner who predeceased her.
Mrs. Gardner had spent her early life in the Pelham and Hickory Grove communities before spending most of her life in the Westover Hills community. She worked as a seamstress at Belk Leggett before retiring, and was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church and attended Woodlawn Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son: Richard Gardner and his wife Kathy Gardner of Ringgold, and two daughters: Stacey G. Foster of Forest, and Lisa Van Hassent and her husband John Van Hassent of Mechanicsville, Maryland, and one sister: Elsie B. Pyrtle of Danville, and nine grandchildren: Alan Foster, Jamelle Foster-Joyce and her husband, W. Brooke Joyce, Allison Gardner, Jamie Gardner, Veronica Miller, Stephanie Miller, Andrew Miller, Lauren Van Hassent and Lane Van Hassent, and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. William C. Blalock. Interment
will follow at the Hickory Grove United Methodist Church cemetery in Rockingham County, North Carolina. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m.

Hazel Dew Boyd
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Hazel Dew Boyd, 81, died Tuesday, August 29, 2000.
She was married
to O.G. Boyd, who predeceased her. She was a native of Danville and had been a peninsula resident since 1940. She was a former member of Deer Park Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Karl Stanley Boyd, and one granddaughter.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mountain View cemetery, Danville.

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary H. Goins Crews, 75, of 160 Pineview Drive died Monday, August 28, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 21, 1925, in South Boston, she was a daughter of Arthur E. and Edna Goins.
She was married
to Tesdell Crews, who predeceased her. She was a member of Camp Grove Baptist Church and was a retired Deputy Sheriff of the Danville Sheriff’s Department.
Survivors include four sons, Tesdell C. Crews of of Columbia, Md. and Ollie Crews, Carl E. Crews, and the Rev. Arthur E. Crews, all of Danville; two daughters, Gilda P. Waldbury of Bronx, N.Y., and Blondie D. Hairston of Danville; one sister, Amie G. Motley of Danville; a stepmother, Macie Scott of Danville; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by one son, Jack Crews.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Camp Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. James Stewart officiating. Interment
will be at Floral Hills memory Gardens.
A viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Camp Grove Baptist Church.
