Dale Hedrick
SUTHERLIN, Va. - Alfred Dale Hedrick, 60, of 1765 Whiteridge Road, died on Wednesday, August 30, 2000, at his residence after eight years of declining health.
Born November 24, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Cleve Edward Hedrick and Kathleen Bobbitt Hedrick, who survives.
On June 29, 1963, he was married
to Carolyn Waller Hedrick, who survives.
Mr. Hedrick had lived all of his life in Danville and Pittsylvania County. He was employed by Apac Virginia Inc. as a superintendent until his retirement due to health reasons with 33 years of service. Mr. Hedrick was a member of Ringgold Baptist Church and American Legion Post 325. He served as Airman 2nd Class with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Danville, survivors include two sons, Tracy Len Hedrick of Halifax and Todd Lindley Hedrick of Sutherlin; one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa Hedrick Tate and Jody Edward Tate of Ringgold; one brother, Ralph C. Hedrick of Danville, and five grandchildren, Tanya Lynette Hedrick, Matthew Ryan Hedrick, Zachery Ryan Hedrick, Justin Eric Tate and Kyrstin Amber Tate.
He was predeceased by one son, Terry Lee Hedrick and one brother, Glenn R. Hedrick.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Ringgold Baptist Church with the Reverend Carl Burger officiating. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens with Military Honors by American Legion Post 325.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and will receive friends at other times at the residence, 1765 Whiteridge Road, Sutherlin, Virginia.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Ringgold Volunteer Fire Department, 897 Little Creek Road, Ringgold, Va. 24586, or to Laurel Grove Fire & Rescue, P.O. Box 26, Sutherlin, VA. 24594.
Helen Cobb Knowles
DANVILLE, Va. - Helen Cobb Knowles, 73, of 137 Southland Drive died Sunday, August 27, 2000, at the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C., after one year of declining health.
Born Dec. 2, 1926, in Burlington, N.C., she was a daughter of Harry C. and Hilda C. Cobb.
On Dec. 19, 1948, she was married
to Robert A. Knowles, who survives.
She attended public school in Greensboro, Durham, and Burlington, N.C. and attended the Women’s College at UNC, Greensboro, N.C. and received her BA in religion at Elon College in 1947. She received her MA in Religious Education in 1949 from Hartford Seminary, Connecticut. Her professional career was carried out in churches in Connecticut and California. She served as director of a nursery school in Westfield, Mass. She also worked in the public schools in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. She retired with her husband to Danville in 1987.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, David A. Knowles of Ashfield, Mass.; three daughters, Deborah K. Jones of Port Charlotte, Fla., Mary Anne Gibbs of Florence, S.C. and Rebecca K. Tallman of York, Pa.; and ten grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn officiating at a later date.
A committal service and interment will follow at the Burlington, N.C. cemetery.
Howard Ragsdale
HALIFAX, Va. - Howard Ragsdale, 78, of 5012 Mountain Road died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 14, 1922, in Halifax County, he was a son of John Ragsdale and Niccie Medley Ragsdale.
He was married
to Catherine Venable Ragsdale, who survives.
He was a member of New Vernon Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include six daughters, Gertrude R. Ferrell of South Boston, Carolyn Ragsdale of Richmond, Joyce R. Walker, Barbara R. Richardson and Bonnie R. Trent, all of Glen Allen, and Phyllis R. Drumwright of Roxboro, N.C.; one stepson, Ray Venable of Washington; one brother, Johnny Samuel Ragsdale of Halifax, and nine grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Roger J. Ford officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Charles Whitlow
CLOVER, Va. - Charles Samuel Whitlow, 91, of 12148 James D. Hagood Hwy. died Thursday, August 31, 2000, at Duke Medical Center.
Born April 5, 1909, in Halifax County, he was a son of Samuel Whitlow and Victoria Whitlow.
He was married
to Irene W. Whitlow, who predeceased him.
He was a retired farmer and member of Clover Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Alton Whitlow of Clover; one sister, Goldie Wilmouth of Scottsburg; one brother, Stacy Whitlow of Keysville; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one son, Samuel O. Whitlow and a grandson.
A graveside funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Clover cemetery with the Rev. Tom Walker officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Alton Whitlow, Guill Town Road, Clover, and at the residence of Bobby Whitlow, Clover Road, Clover.

Stella “Jac” Bailey Adams
DANVILLE, Va. - Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 3, 2000 at 4:00 p.m. from Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral service in the church reception parlor. Graveside service for family only will be held later at Highland cemetery. Reverends Jonathan L. Bennett and David Kerns Bailey will conduct the service.
The daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Clyde L. Bailey, Mrs. Adams was born in Danville on June 20, 1918 and lived most of her life in Danville. An active member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, she started the T.L.T. service, headed many receptions, and served on a number of committees including the Daily Bread cookbook committee. Other organizations that Mrs. Adams supported include the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, the Wednesday Club, Wayside Garden Club, Danville Regional Hospital Volunteers and Kerns Memorial United Methodist Church of Sutherlin (which was founded by her grandfather, H.O. Kerns). As wife of her late husband, Colonel William Kent Adams, she was involved in the activities of V.M.I. Alumni and the Virginia National Guard.
Mrs. Adams is survived by her children, Anne Adams Gaskin of Atlanta, William R. “Bill” Adams of Alliance, N.C. and stepson, R. Kent “Kenny” Adams of Danville; one brother, Clyde L. “Bill” Bailey of Greensboro; a cousin (considered a brother) T.A. Kerns of Richmond; and four grandchildren, Mollie and Laura Gaskin, and Ian and David Adams.

Bernard Overton
RICHMOND, Va. - Bernard Leigh Overton, 79, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at Brunswick Cove Nursing Center in Leland, N.C.
Born June 4, 1921, in Prince Edward County, he was the son of John Bondurant Overton and Ida Leigh Bondurant.
He was married
to Mae Slayton Overton, who survives.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence survivors include one son, Bernie L. Overton Jr. of Leland N.C.; one brother, Edward T. Overton of Halifax; one sister, Minnie O. Goodman of Alexandria; and one grandchild.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Linda O. Divley.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Oak Ridge cemetery in South Boston, with the Rev. Charles Stewart officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home in South Boston.
Kiara Owen
DANVILLE, Va. - Kiara Michelle Owen, infant, of 141 Montague Street, died at birth, Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was the daughter of Joseph David Owen and Lawanda Ketchum Owen, who survive.
In addition to her mother and father of the residence, survivors include one paternal grandfather, Claud Owen of Collinsville; one paternal stepgrandmother, Irene Owen of Collinsville; one maternal grandfather; Jimmy Mullis of Danville; and one maternal grandmother, Wanda Mullis of Danville.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. Jimmy Burks officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Henry Parker
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Henry Cole Parker, 86, of 448 Crecent Drive died Thursday Aug. 31, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born March 15, 1914, in Halifax County, he was the son of William Benjamin Parker and Betty Cole Parker.
He was married
to Inez Jennings Parker, who survives.
He was a graduate of the University of Richmond and was a Field Director with the National Red Cross for over 30 years. He was a United States Army Veteran, serving in World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence survivors include one daughter, Harriette Lee Parker McArthur of Homer, Alaska; one son, Henry Lloyd Parker of Concord, Calif.; and one grandson.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Fox and the Rev. Dr. Bradshaw, officiating. Interment
will follow at Halifax Baptist Church cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Jean Y. Pinchback, 59, of 175 Northern Drive died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at her residence.
Born Aug. 30, 1941, in Danville, she was the daughter of Edgar W. Pinchback and Vivian B. Pinchback.
Survivors include one son, Charles A. Pinchback of New York; one brother, Edgar W. Pinchback of Danville; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Oakhill cemetery, with the Rev. Willie J. Toomer officiating.

Eva Barbour
DANVILLE, Va. - Eva Goad Barbour, formerly of 160 Herndon Place died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had resided at Riverside Health Care Center for three years.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Acie Goad and Essie Collins Goad.
She was married
to Stover T. Barbour, who predeceased her in 1960.
She spent most of her life in Washington, D.C. and Danville where she was a homemaker. She was of the Christian Faith.
Survivors include one son, James Barbour of Danville; and one sister, Hallie Rea of Danville.
A graveside service was held 2 p.m. Saturday at Mountain View cemetery, with the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
