Numa Bradner
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Numa Page Bradner, 75, of the 500 block of Scarborough Drive died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in Chesapeake.
Born in Yanceyville, N.C., he was the son of Harry Bradner and Betty Mae Page Bradner.
He was married
to Amy Lee Hatcher Bradner, who survives.
He grew up in Danville, where he attended George Washington High School and was very active in football and baseball. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Hampden-Sydney College and his Masters degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He retired after serving 30 years as a teacher, principal, superintendent and Director of Secondary Education for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In addition to his wife of the residence survivors include three sons, James P. Bradner of Chesapeake, Jeffrey P. Bradner of Hanover County and Joseph P. Bradner of Bridgehampton, N.Y.; two sisters, Wilma Weber of Danville and Betty Henderson of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church in Danville, with the Rev. Rebecca Yow and the Rev. Linwood Wells officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Mosely Memorial United Methodist Church.

Leona Buettner
DANVILLE, Va. - Leona Merricks Buettner, 84, of Stratford House, 1111 Main St. died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at her home.
Born May 30, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George D. Merricks and Pency Simpson Merricks.
She was married
to Burton Lewis Buettner, who predeceased her.
She lived most of her life in Danville. She was Chrismon Secretary of the Ascension Lutheran Church, Sunday school teacher, church choir member, a member of Women of the Church and served on Church Council.
Survivors include one daughter, Karen B. Cash of Brentwood, Tenn.; two brothers, Moses L. Merricks and Richard E. Merricks, both of Danville; two sisters, Ilean M. Wilson of Charlotte, N.C. and Rebecca M. Merricks of Lynchburg; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by two daughters, Janet B. Lind and Lisa E. Buettner.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m Monday at Ascension Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Caldwell N. Day officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
Bernice Jane Shorter McCubbins
DANVILLE, Va. - Bernice Jane Shorter McCubbins, 60, of 1832 Tunstall Road died suddenly Saturday September 2, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born October 6, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Lewis T. Shorter and Lila Mitchell Shorter.
She was married
on October 31, 1959 to Gary McCubbins who survives.
Mrs. McCubbins lived her entire life in the Keeling Community and Danville area where she was employed at Ames Department Store as a cashier. Mrs. McCubbins was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence survivors include one daughter, Kellie Diane McCubbins of Axton, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Angela M. Bernice Cockram and Paul Cockram of Ridgeway, Va.; a sister, Janice Austin of Danville; and two grandsons, Ryan Scott McCubbins of Axton, Va. and P.J. Cockram of Ridgeway, Va.
She was predeceased by one brother, George T. Shorter and two sisters, Virginia A. Ruben and Roxie E. Gibson.
A funeral will be held 2:00 PM Monday September 4, 2000, at Bethel Baptist Church, with the Reverend Gil Hawks officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 PM Sunday September 3, 2000, at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and at other times at the residence.
Kiara Owen
DANVILLE, Va. - Kiara Michelle Owen, infant, of 141 Montague Street, died at birth, Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was the daughter of Joseph David Owen and Lawanda Ketchum Owen, who survive.
In addition to her mother and father of the residence, survivors include one paternal grandfather, Claud Owen of Collinsville; one paternal stepgrandmother, Irene Owen of Collinsville; one maternal grandfather; Jimmy Mullis of Danville; and one maternal grandmother, Wanda Mullis of Danville.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. Jimmy Burks officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Annie Smith
DANVILLE, Va. - Annie Francis Smith, 94, formerly of Westmoreland Court died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at Morehead Nursing Center in Eden, N.C.
Born June 28, 1906 in Swansonville, Pittslvania County, she was the daughter of James M. Francis and Worta Thomas Francis.
She was married
to Pinson Smith who predeceased her on Oct. 6, 1944.
She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.
Survivors include one daughter, Ann Pinson Arnold of Eden, N.C.; one brother, David W. Francis of Pearisburg; three sisters, Julia Grant of Silver Springs, Md., Belle Stelle of Boca Raton, Fla. and Lucy Scearce of Danville; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Greenhill cemetery, with the Rev. James Mathieson officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister Lucy Scearce, 154 Clarendon Circle.

Emmett Turner
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Emmett Howell "Hal" Turner, 70, of LaFayette Ave. died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Nov. 24, 1929, in Virginia, he was the son of Emmett Howell Turner Sr. and Bertell Dodd Turner.
He was married
to Lynn Turner who survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Dupont and of the Primitive Baptist Faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Jennifer Lynn Truesdale of Rock Hill, S.C.; two sons, Emmett Howell Turner III of Salem and Mark Douglas Turner of Beckley, W.Va.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. David Cochran officiating. A private burial for family only will follow.
The family will receive friends 7-9 Monday at Bassett Funeral Service.
David Burnett
DANVILLE, Va. - David Marsella Burnett, 50, of 1364 Vandola Road died suddenly Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 22, 1949, in Danville, he was the son of the late Asa D. Burnett and Carolyn Hanks Burnett, who survives.
He was married
Jan. 15, 1982, to Sue Andrews Burnett, who survives.
He had lived all his life in Danville and Pittsylvania County.
He was a graduate of Tunstall High School, class of 1968 and attended Danville Community College. He was employed by Miller Brewing Company of Eden, N.C., where he worked in the packaging department. He was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir. He was a master instructor in Hunters Educational Program For Danville and Pittsylvania County.
In addition to his mother of Danville and his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Michelle H. Loyd of South Boston; one brother, Dr. Duane Burnett of Danville and two sisters, Carolyn Burnett Herndon of Danville and Bonnie Burnett Law of Kernersville, N.C.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Timberlake Baptist Church, with the Rev. Walter Yancey officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

GRETNA, Va. - Gladys Jones, 65, of 8397 Rockford School Road died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at Duke Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born Jan. 8, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Uliton Jones and Eula Womack Jones.
She was married
to the Rev. Lassie Jones, who survives.
She was a member of New Chapel Baptist Church and served as mother of the church.
In addition to her husband of the residence she is survived by five daughters, Gayle Stephens; Judy Irvin and Barbara Miller, all of Gretna; Joyce Thomas of Chatham and Gloria Jones of Teaneck, N.J.; four sons, Rev. Jerry Lee Jones and Jimmy Jones, both of Gretna; Lester Jones of Laura, Md. and Junior Jones of Danville; three sisters, Clara Casey of Chatham; Leona English of Washington, D.C. and Lizzie Jones of Danville; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, with the Rev. Walter Coles officiating. Interment
will follow at the Callands Baptist Church cemetery.

John Powell
CLOVER, Va. - John Henry Powell, 76, of 1117 Covington Trail, Clover, Va., died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born June 24, 1924, in Halifax County, he was the son of Elgin E. Powell and Izitti Vaughan Powell.
He was married
to Ada R. Powell, who survives at the residence in Clo ver.
He was a retired farmer.
In addition to his wife of the residence survivors include one stepdaughter, Joanne Dean of Walterboro, S.C.; one stepson, Raymond Strange of Newport News; three sisters, Mary Lloyd of Saxe; Ruby Martin and Eva Trimble, both of Keysville; one brother, Alton Powell of Portsmouth; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday, September 5, 2000 at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel in South Boston, with the Rev. Courtney W. Coffer officiating.
Interment will follow at Providence Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Paul Carr
NATHALIE, Va. - Paul Ray Carr, 48, of 5230 Coles Ferry Road died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at his residence.
Born May 5, 1952, in Lynchburg, he was a son of Sam Carr and Betty Viola Fears Carr, who survives.
He was a member of Ellis Creek Baptist Church where he was a Sunday school treasurer, church deacon and was also a member of French Masonic Lodge #270 A.F. & A.M. He was a farmer, former school bus driver and driver for Southern States Petroleum.
In addition to his mother of Nathalie, survivors include two sisters, Betty Ann C. Owen of Graham, N.C. and Margie Jane C. Rogers of Alton and one brother, Joe Lee Carr of Crystal Hill.
He was predeceased by one brother, Sam Master Carr Sr.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ellis Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Stewart, the Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw, the Rev. Darrell Poole and the Rev. Mike Sullivan officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery with masonic rites.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
