Frank Cross
DANVILLE, Va. - Frank David Cross, 74, of 5932 Mount Cross Road, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at his residence after six years of declining health.
Born Aug. 8, 1926, in Toledo, Ohio, he was the son of Frank David Cross and Edna Cross.
He was married
to Beatrice Minke Cross, who survives. He had lived in the Danville area since 1989 and was a retired Merchant Seamen, having served as an engineer. He was a member of the American Legion Post #1097 in Danville and the Masonic Lodge #113 in Norfolk. He served in the United States Navy as a submarine engineer for 20 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Mike Langlois of Cheyenne, Wyo. and Dave Cross of Denver; one daughter; one stepson, Kenneth Conlisk of Maui, Hawaii; one stepdaughter, Rebecca Virginia mabe of Denver; one sister, Fran Overmeyer of Toledo, Ohio, and six grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Rob Kauffelt officiating. American Legion Post #1097 Honor Guard will perform military rites. A burial at sea will be conducted at a later date.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Mary Ellington
RICHMOND, Va. - Mary Wilmoth Scarce Ellington, 88, of 2314 A. Grant’s Circle died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital after two years of declining health and a three-week stay in the hospital.
Born Nov. 20, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Floyd Shields Scarce and Nancy Katherine Grogan Scarce.
On July 8, 1953, she was married
to Robert Frank Ellington, who predeceased her Nov. 22, 1996.
She was a member of Saint Luke’s United Methodist Church. She lived most of her life in Danville and was retired from Dan River Mills where she worked in the weave room.
Survivors include one son, Ronald M. Mays of Richmond; one stepson, John Dale Ellington of Ruffin, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Frances Ellington Cook of Reidsville, N.C.; one grandchild, four step grandchildren and two step great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Randy Duncan officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
Gladys Hester
DANVILLE, Va. - Gladys Barker Hester, 89, formerly of Semora, N.C., died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born in Person County, N.C., she was a daughter of Thomas Woody and Mattie Lou Tulloh Barker.
She was married
to Louis Hester, who predeceased her.
She was the oldest member of Semora United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one nephew, James Dailey Barker Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; one niece, Barbara Barker Gupton of Carolina Beach, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Janie Jones Barker, of Atlanta, Ga. and Huldah Hester, of Hurdle Mills; six great-nieces and great-nephews, three great-great-nephews and three great-great-nieces.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Semora United Methodist Church with the Rev. J. Allen Lovell. Interment
will follow at Red House Presbyterian Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Jean Turner, 161 Wrenn Crumpton Road in Roxboro, N.C.

Jim Mullins
DANVILLE, Va. - Jim Mullins, 71, of 1568 Fulton Heights, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born March 28, 1929, in Dickerson County, he was a son of Lakey Mullins.
He was married
to Florence Rose Mullins, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville and worked for 40 years at Dan River Mills, later retiring from Jaunty Textiles, Scranton, Pa.
He was of the Baptist faith and the last survivors of his immediate family.
Survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Gusler of Danville and Kathy Bates of Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by one grandson.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Claude Johnson
DANVILLE, Va. - Claude Steven Johnson, 41, of 200 Shamrock Drive died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born Dec. 30, 1958, in Danville, he was the son of Sheddy Johnson and Letha Whitfield Johnson, who survives.
He lived all of his life in Danville where he worked at Johnson’s Riverside Drug and was a member of West Main Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, survivors include one son, Steven Michael Johnson of Danville and one daughter, Cristal Gaye Johnson of Danville.
He was predeceased by one brother, A. Ricky Johnson and one sister, Deborah Gaye Johnson.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Ewing and the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

James William Keesee
GRETNA, Va. - James William Keesee, 87, of 307 Vaden Drive died Wednesday, September 6, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born February 5, 1913 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John William Keesee and Mamie Burnette Keesee.
Mr. Keesee was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters, Roy Keesee, Earl Keesee, Hilda Cocke and Sara Hiltzheimer and both parents.
Mr. Keesee served as the Gretna’s Postmaster from 1961 to 1979. He was a member and former deacon of the First Baptist Church of Gretna, Anderson Masonic Lodge 258 A.F. and A.M., Gretna Lions Club and American Legion Post #232.
Mr. Keesee served his country as an Army veteran of World War II. He was also the recipient of the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his wife, Goldie Barnes Arnn Keesee of the residence; a step-daughter, Bernadine Arnn Hayes and Jack Irby Hayes Jr. of Danville; two brothers, Edwin Keesee of Gretna and Bobby Keesee of Mobile, Ala.; a sister, Louise Jones of Gretna; two step-grandchildren, Emily Barbacci of Tallahassee, Fla. and Julia Hayes of Virginia Beach.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Gretna with the Rev. Glenn Graves and the Rev. W.D. Lilly officiating. Burial with masonic rites by Anderson Lodge 258 A.F. and A.M. will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Edwin M. Patterson
MIDLOTHIAN, Va. - Edwin M. Patterson, age 79, died Tuesday, September 5, 2000, at his home.
He was a tennis enthusiast and a member of several accounting organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Fowlkes Patterson of Midlothian, Va; children, Sean E. Patterson, Atlanta, Ga., Janice P. Richardson, Richmond, Va.; sister Marjorie P. Sacken, Ramsuer, N.J.; and four grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday at Huguenot Chapel Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., Midlothian, Va. A second service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at the Locust Hill Methodist Church in Yanceyville, N.C. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to the American Heart Association.
James Barbour
ALTAVISTA, Va. - James Orel Barbour, 76, of 609 Riverveiw Drive died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born March 11, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Woody Barbour and Sallie Simpson Barbour.
He was married
to Belvodean Crocker Barbour, who survives.
He was employed by John W. Daniel Co. as a construction foreman for 32 years.
For the past seven years, he was employed as a Campbell County school bus driver.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one son, Micheal James Barbour of Dublin; one daughter, Mary Ruth Morris of Gainesville; two stepdaughters, Linda Rice of Altavista and Celia Stern of Springfield; two brothers, Ludolph Barbour of Danville and Adrian Barbour of Altavista; three grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, William Audry Barbour and one sister, Geneva B. Myers.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in Green Hill cemetery with the Rev. Jeff Allen officiating.

Dorothy Herndon
DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy Sandra Herndon, 52, of 12 London Drive died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 22, 1947, in Danville, she was the daughter of James "Hobbie" Herndon and Virgie Compton Herndon, who survives.
She lived in Danville all her life, where she was a member of Gethsemane Wesleyan Church.
In addition to her mother of Danville, survivors include one brother, Donnie Herndon of Danville.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Gentry and the Rev. Paul Ray officiating.
Interment will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.

David Allen Gregory
DANVILLE, Va. - David Allen Gregory, 53, of 309 College Avenue, died suddenly on September 7, 2000, in Pendleton County, W. Va., while returning home to Virginia.
Born on September 12, 1946, in St. Petersburg, Fla., he was the son of James Ferderick Gregory and Eve Margaret Morales Gregory.
A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Navy as a member of an alpha flight crew on a P47 Orion engaging in anti-submarine defense.
Following his military service, he spent 25 years as a professional firefighter with the Atlantic City, N.J., Fire Department. He retired in 1994.
David was a graduate of Atlantic City Community College with degrees in liberal arts and fire technology. He was also a licensed Coast Guard Captain.
Beloved by his family and friends, David is survived by his wife Crystal Eileen Gregory of Danville and his two sons, Paul and Joel Gregory of Abescon, N.J.
Also in New Jersey, he is survived by his adopted family which includes his father Howard Garfield of Smithville; his brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Debbie Garfield of Burlington; his sister and brother-in-law, Wendie and Ed Fitzgerald of Abescon; his sister and brother-in-law Cathie and Arturo Barrera of Linwood; and Lisa Welsh of Smithville. He is survived by one brother Frederick Gregory of Norfolk, and was predeceased by his half-brother Steven Garfield.
David is also survived by his stepdaughter Rachel Lane of the residence; his stepdaughter Grete Hopkins, her husband Shawn, and their daughter Alexandria of Danville; his stepson Robert Lane and his wife Carrie of Roanoke.
Donations may be made in David's name to the charity of one's choice.
