William Adams
NATHALIE, Va. - William Booker Adams, 88, of L.P. Bailey Memorial Hwy. died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at his residence.
Born March 27, 1912, in Halifax County, he was a son of Jesse T. Adams and Loulie E. Booker Adams.
He was a member of Childrey Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II where he was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant.
He was vice president of Adams Lumber Company and a retired farmer.
Survivors include two nieces, Grace G. Anderson of Nathalie and Louise Scott Steele of Raleigh, N.C.; four nephews, Dr. R.F. Burke Steele Jr. of Petersburg, Richard T. Adams, Jr. of Garner, N.C., James E. Adams of Brookneal, and Robert C. Adams of Rockville.
He was predeceased by three sisters and three brothers.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Childrey Baptist Church with the Rev. Rodney Barwick officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery. Military rites will be performed by American Legion Post #16.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Henderson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Memorials may be made to Childrey Baptist Church or the Brookneal Volunteer Fire Department.
Mary Conyers
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Kathryn Conyers, 81, formerly of 221 Montague St. died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after a decline in health.
Born Oct. 16, 1918, in Franklinton, N.C., she was a daughter of Robert Lee “Bob” Conyers Sr. and Oza Martin Williams Conyers.
Following her graduation from Franklinton High School, she attended the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Danville, graduating on Feb. 21, 1941.
She served as a registered nurse in Danville for 42 years, including employment with The Memorial Hospital and Averett College before retiring as a plant nurse at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Oct. 1983.
Survivors include one nephew, Al M. Conyers of Franklinton, N.C.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oak Ridge cemetery, South Boston, with the Rev. Bruce Wilson officiating.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at West Main Baptist Church.

Luther Foster
DANVILLE, Va. - Luther Foster, 83, of 301 Haraway Road died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 3, 1917, in Alabama, he was a son of Willie and Ethel Foster.
He was married
to Irene Divens Foster, who survives.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Irene Jones of Danville.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Vance Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Herbert Dickerson officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Claude Johnson
DANVILLE, Va. - Claude Steven Johnson, 41, of 200 Shamrock Drive died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born Dec. 30, 1958, in Danville, he was the son of Sheddy Johnson and Letha Whitfield Johnson, who survives.
He lived all of his life in Danville where he worked at Johnson's Riverside Drug and was a member of West Main Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, survivors include one son, Steven Michael Johnson of Danville and one daughter, Cristal Gaye Johnson of Danville.
He was predeceased by one brother, A. Ricky Johnson and one sister, Deborah Gaye Johnson.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Ewing and the Rev. Robert Vermillion officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Richard Lawson
DANVILLE, Va. - Richard "Dick" Lawson, 58, of 985 Anderson Ave, Bronx, N.Y. died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 14, 1942, in Danville, he was the son of Robert L. Lawson and Laura V. Lawson.
He graduated from Southside High School and was a foreman with a large construction company in New York. He joined Jones Chapel Baptist Church at an early age and later joined Friendly Baptist Church, Bronx, New York.
Survivors include two daughters, Wanda Lawson and Lationa Lawson, both of Bronx, N.Y.; one son, Richard Lawson Jr. of Bronx, N.Y.; one sister, Gloria Johnson of Bronx, N.Y. and nine grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m Saturday at Jones Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Hayes McConnell officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.

John Martin
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - John Thomas Martin, 78, of 103 Rosehill Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Dec. 15, 1921, in Halifax County, he was the son of George Oliver Martin and Kate Whittemore Martin.
He was married
to Minnie Mae Lacks Martin, who predeceased him.
He was a tobacco farmer and a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Survivors include four daughters, Dicie M. Shore of Farmville; Gladys M. Brumfield of Scottsburg; Pauline Carper Womack and Catherine "Kitty" M. Stewart, both of South Boston; one son, Ernest E. Martin of Scottsburg; he was guardian of Patricia Palmer of Halifax; one brother, Archer Martin of Halifax; three sisters, Ellis M. Hazelwood, Rosa M. Kincaid and Louise Martin, all of Clover; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow at Ellis Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Nathalie.

Clarence Tanner
DANVILLE, Va. - Rev. Clarence Tanner, 82, of Piney Forest Nursing Home died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at his residence.
Born Jan. 8, 1918 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Tanner and Betty Mae Ferguson.
He was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Clarence Tanner Jr. of Danville; one daughter, Alice Cobbs of Danville and one brother, Ellis Tanner of Danville.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. L. Coleman officiating.
Interment will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.

David Taylor Morris
CHICAGO, Ill. - David Taylor Morris, 38, of Chicago, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at his residence.
Born July 2, 1962, in Furth, Germany, he was a son of Col. (Ret.) Edward D. Morris, who survives and Betty Taylor Morris.
He graduated from Onalaska High School in Onalaska, Wis. He attended the University of Wisconsin and North Western University in Chicago.
At the time of his death he was employed by the Hilton Hotel in Chicago.
In addition to his parents Edward D. and Bonnie Morris of Onalaska, Wis., he is survived by one brother, Jefferson Edward Morris and Teresa of Indianapolis, Ind.; one sister, Jennifer Sanibria and Micheal of Onalaska, Wis.; his paternal grandmother Florence Morris Van Rite of Green Bay, Wis.; two aunts, Shirley Taylor Swofford and William and Aileen Taylor Thore and Bob, all of Blairs, Va.; two nephews; two nieces and two cousins.
In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by his maternal grandparents Benjamin E. and Gladys B. Taylor, and his paternal grandfather Edward A. Morris.
Graveside rites will be conducted 12 p.m. Saturday, at Oakland United Methodist Church cemetery, with the Rev. Steve J. Lewis officiating.

James Ozmer
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - James "Jimmy" McGiffin Ozmer, 83, of 407 Powell Road died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000.
Born June 9, 1917, in Fernandina, Fla. he was th son of Thomas Gunby and Ethel McGiffin Ozmer.
He was married
to Elizabeth "Libby" Stove Ozmer, who survives.
He attended Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Ga. and the University of Florida, at Gainesville, Fla.
He was a retired independent insurance agent and financial consultant and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fernandina, Fla.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, James McGiffin Ozmer Jr. of Sutherlin; Richard Stover Ozmer of Fernandina, Fla. and George Hunter Ozmer of Roanoke, Va. and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, Thomas Gunby Ozmer and one sister, Nancy Ozmer Williams.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Oak Ridge cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee officiating.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Jonathan Hedrick
DANVILLE, Va. - Jonathan Scott Hedrick, 35, of 263 Arnett Blvd. died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at Johnson Memorial Hospital, Smithfield, N.C.
Born Jan. 22, 1965, in Danville, he was a son of Walton Dale Hedrick and Nancy Powell Hedrick, who survive.
He lived all of his life in Danville before moving to Raleigh, N.C. for the last four months.
He was a 1983 graduate of Tunstall High School and a graduate of Averett College.
He performed in a number of Danville Little Theater productions and also in Averett Drama Department productions. He was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to his mother of the residence and his father of Danville, survivors include one sister, Tracey Elizabeth Hedrick of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. and paternal grandmother, Mamie Adkins of Danville.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Rebecca Yow officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
