SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Virginia Edwards Franklin Daniel, of 1817 Chamberlain St. died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at her residence.
Born in Semora, N.C., she was the daughter of Thomas Lee Franklin and Bessie Crews Walton Franklin.
She was married
to Dorsey Lee Daniel, who survivies. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, the WMS, and the Woodmen of the World Camp 106.
In addition to her husband of South Boston, survivors include one sister, Louise Hicks of Durham, N.C.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Martin officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home, and will receive friends other times at the residence.

Eva M. Ferguson
DANVILLE, Va. - Eva M. Ferguson, 80, formerly of 155 Winthrop Drive died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Jan. 30, 1920, in Blairs, she was the daughter of Robert Thomas Murphy and Hossie Edmunds Murphy.
She was married
to Albert Ferguson, who predeceased her. She was a registered nurse and had worked at the Dan River Clinic. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Elizabeth Murphy Samuel of Danville and Louise Murphy Brodie of Martinsville, and two brothers, Joseph C. Murphy of Blairs and Elton G. Murphy of Chatham.
She was predeceased by an infant boy and girl and seven brothers, Albert Thornton Murphy, the Rev. Robert Edmund Murphy, James Hale Murphy, Archie R. Murphy Sr., Gilmer Anderson Murphy, Thomas Murphy and Julian Murphy.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Joey Faucette officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at Townes Memorial Chapel.
Fred Crowder
DANVILLE, Va. - Fred Vance Crowder, 83, of 211 Indian Valley Road died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at his residence.
Born July 20, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Conway Crowder and Dollie Owen Crowder.
On Jan. 17, 1964, he was married
to Ethel Davis Crowder, who survives.
He lived most of his life in the Danville area, where, prior to his retirement in 1983, he worked for Dan River Inc. in No. 5 Finish as a finishing inspector. He was a Member of Day Spring Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Franklin Crowder of Java; two daughters, Evelyn Hedrick of Chatham and Betty Sue Eastridge of Orlando, Fla.; four stepsons, James M. Arthur, John W. Courtney and Howard B. Courtney, all of Danville and Raymond S. Shelton of Brookneal; four stepdaughters, Katherine Mae Arthur of Neport News; the Rev. Etta Marie Martin of Four Oaks, N.C.; Betty Marilyn Simms of Danville and Glenda Faye Courtney of Richmond; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; 12 step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Julian Crowder and three sisters, Ella McDaniel, Emma McDaniel and Gracie Dalton.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lee VonEime and the Rev. James Bullock officiating.
Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Evelyn Hedrick, 339 Peach St., Chatham.
Thomas ‘T.C.’ Calvin Cundiff
PENHOOK, Va. - Thomas (T.C.) Calvin Cundiff, age 74, of Penhook, passed away Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at his home. He was a son of the late Robert Hampton and Mary Carter Cundiff. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Wayne Cundiff, two sisters, Rachel Guilliams and Dorothy Thacker and a brother, Allen Cundiff. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Ramsey Cundiff of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Patsy Cundiff of Rocky Mount, Tommy and Kathy Cundiff of Glade Hill, David (Buddy) and Tina Cundiff of Penhook; two daughters and son-in-law, Barbara and Frank Humphreys of Roanoke, Betty C. Finch of Roanoke; daughter-in-law, Lois P. Cundiff of Utah, eight grandchildren, Rhonda Sue and Bryan Cundiff of Utah, Terry W. Cundiff II of Pennsylvania, T.C. III and Jeremy Cundiff of Glade Hill, Tomika Finch of Roanoke, Kimberly Humphreys of Roanoke and Ethan Robert Cundiff of Penhook; brother, Robert Malcolm (Mack) Cundiff of Moneta; two sisters, Shirley David of Martinsville and Aurie Poindexter of Union Hall. Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Liberty Memorial Gardens, Pittsylvania Co., with the Rev. Gene Ashworth officiating. Gussie Crews
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Gussie Leonard Crews, 62, 1040 Crews Trail died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was born Feb. 17, 1938, in Halifax County.
He was married
to Laura Oliver Crews, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Cassandra Watkins of Alexandria; Dana Powell of Oxon Hill, Md. and Crystal Crews of Martinsville; four sisters, Margaret Cobbs of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Mary Edmunds of Blairs; Rosa Jennigs of South Boston and Lillian Strange of Danville; two brothers, Johnny Crews of Laurel, Md. and Frissell Crews of Danville and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, with the Rev. Leon Little officiating. Interment
will follow at the Crews Family cemetery in South Boston.

Hyacinth Hatcher
VIRGILINA, Va. - Hyacinth Cole Hatcher, 101, of 2127 Aarons Creek Road, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at Twin Oaks Convalescent Home.
Born May 9, 1899, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Harry Blanks Cole and Emma Fox Cole.
She was married
to Charles H. Hatcher Sr., who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and member of Scottsburg United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Myrtle H. Dunn of South Boston, Evelyn H. Stuart of Virgilina and Ann H. Garrett of Halifax; one son, Charles Hatcher Jr. of South Boston, and two grandsons, four great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son and one grandchild.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Brooks Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Cooke officiating. Interment
will follow at Oakland cemetery.

Floyd Irby
DANVILLE, Va. - Floyd “Red” Andrew Irby, 88, of 18 Milton Ave., died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after 10 years of declining health.
Born Aug. 12, 1912, in the Sycamore community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Ell Irby and Nannie Dalton Irby.
He was married
to Addie Edwards Irby, who predeceased him Dec. 20, 1997.
He made his home in Danville for the past 58 years where he worked at Dan River Inc. for 35 years and later worked for Fuquay Pontiac for 13 years before retiring at the age of 62.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Survivors include five daughters, Charlotte Irby Jordan of Roxboro, N.C., and Ethel Irby Martin, Carol Irby Worley and Hilda Irby Wyatt, all of Danville, and Sandra Irby Grubbs of Evington; one son, Ronald Irby of Martinsville; one sister, Irene Crowder of Leesburg, N.C.; one brother, Claude Irby of Chesapeake; 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Bishop William T. Collins Jr. and Bishop Richard Bliss officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Lalia Holley
DRY FORK, Va. - Lalia Obera Stowe Holley, 90, of 660 Whitmell School Road died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 14, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Joel Waller Stowe and Jeanette Davis Stowe.
On Dec. 25, 1934, she was married
to Luther Carter Holley, who survives. She lived her entire life in Caswell County, N.C. and then moved to Dry Fork where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Whitmell United Methodist Church where she taught the Ladies Bible Class and was a member of the choir and the United Methodist Women.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Esther H. Wood and Sylvia H. Tate, both of Danville; two sons, Ronnie M. Holley of Whitmell and David L. Holley of Quinton; four sisters, Jeanette Davis Stowe, Loraine Estelle Stowe, Mary Stowe Stegall and Brantley Stowe Holley, all of Dry Fork; three brothers, Robert Mosley Stowe, Howard Everett Stowe and Charlie Francis Stowe, all of Dry Fork; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Jeff McClellan Stowe, Joel Ezra Stowe and George Waller Stowe.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Donald Warrick officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Wilbur Junes
BETHESDA, Md. - Wilbur Lee Junes, 62, of 4521 East-West Hwy 201 died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at his residence.
Born April 22, 1938, in Washington, D.C., he was a son of Guy Wilbur Junes and Bessie Hill Junes.
He was a house painter.
Survivors include one sister, Betty Ann Koutsos of Hampstead.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral home Chapel, Danville, Va. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Ruth Taylor
CHATHAM, Va. - Ruth Townes Taylor, 72, of 140 Centeral School Lane, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 26, 1928, in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of Elijah and Annie S. Townes.
She was married
to John L. Taylor, who predeceased her. She was a member of Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church and was retired from American Furniture Company.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda G. Townes of Chatham; one son, Kenneth Townes of Chatham; two brothers, Bishop Theodore Jones of Chatham and Jimmie S. Townes of Chester, Pa.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with the Dr. H.G. McGhee officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

James Travis
CAPE CORAL, Fla. - James Willard Travis, 85, of 4102 South West 28th Ave. died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at Cape Coral Hospital.
Born May 30, 1915, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Robert C. Travis and Nanny Martin Travis Stanley.
He was married
to Mary Rubye Dalton Travis, who predeceased him.
He moved to Florida in June 1997, after spending most of his life in Danville, Va. He worked as a supervisor at Dan River Inc. for 30 years before retiring.
Prior to working for Dan River, he also worked for Warner Robins Air Tech Service Command for seven years and was a member of Stokesland Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Robert R. Travis of Cape Coral; one sister, Goldie Terry of Danville; one brother, Larry Travis of Burlington, N.C.; one half-brother, Billy Stanley of Danville; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Gregg and Brenda Travis, 241 North Woodberry Avenue.
