William H. Yarbrough
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Pastor, Suffragan Bishop William Howard Yarbrough, of 609 Edmunds St., died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at his residence after a lengthy illness.
Born April 4, 1934, in South Boston, he was a son of Phil Yarbrough and Ella B. Yarbrough, who survives.
He was married
to Arlena M. Yarbrough, who survives.
He received his early education in Halifax County Public Schools and furthered his education at Lynchburg College. He completed his Christian and religious education with excellence of achievements at Aenon Bible College, Indianapolis, Ind.
In 1958, he became a member of Greater Mayfield Holiness Church under the leadership of founder, the late Pastor Elizabeth L. Mills, and he remained there under the pastorate of the late Pastor Ora Schoefield. He served as pastor of White Stone Pentecostal Holiness church, Sutherlin, for the past 25 years. Under the auspices of the Virginia State Council Apostolic Inc. for the past 19 years, he was also the pastor of Clover Apostolic Holiness Church, Clover.
He held many long-term offices and served in a wide variety of capacities on the local, state, and national levels in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World Inc. They included: Treasurer of the Virginia State Council Apostolic Inc. for over 20 years; organizer of the Western District Ushers’ Union; President of the State and Region One Ushers’ Union, and Supervisor and Overseer of the Western District Jubilee (Region One Jubilee).
In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Richmond, survivors include one son, James Massenburg of South Boston; two sisters, Gladys Faulkner of South Boston and Almaria Tucker of Richmond; one brother, Daniel Yarbrough of Richmond, and three grandchildren.
A funeral was held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept 7, 2000, at White Stone Pentecostal Holiness Church. Eulogist was Bishop Clarence Moore. Interment
was held at White Stone Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

Rocky Lacks
RANDOLPH, Va. - Rocky Layne Lacks, 35, of 5055 Blackwalnut Road died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born June 15, 1965, in Halifax County, he was the son of Bobby G. Lacks and Larvee C. Lacks, both of whom survive.
He was a technician with Westpoint-Stevens.
In addition to his mother and father of Randolph, survivors include one brother, Stacey Lacks of Randolph.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Talley officiating. Interment
will follow at Lacks Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence.
Willie Lynwood Thompson
DANVILLE, Va. - Willie Lynwood Thompson, age 89, formerly of Mt. Tabor Road, Keeling, died Sunday afternoon September 10, 2000 at Riverside Health Care Center where he had resided since February 1996.
Mr. Thompson was born in Halifax County on October 16, 1910, a son of the late Willie Jefferson Thompson and Ethel Lewis Thompson.
He was married
to Ollie White Thompson who survivies of Riverside Health Care Center.
Mr. Thompson had spent most of his life in the Keeling community of Pittsylvania County where he was a retired farmer. He later worked in security at Averett College. He was a member of Old Mill Prmitive Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and treasurer. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Farm Bureau.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Riverside Health Care, include one son and daughter in law: Ronald J. & Judy T. Thompson of Danville, and one daughter and son in law: Elaine T. & Samuel Shelton of Eustis, Florida, and three Grandchildren: James W. Burgess, Jr., of Braddock Heights, Maryland, and Jefferson D. Thompson and Robin M. Thompson both of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Lonnie Mozingo, Jr., and Elder Norval Mann. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., and at the residence of his son, Ronald J. & Judy D. Thompson, at 4017 Bridgewood Drive, Danville, at other times.
Jean Vaughan
VIRGILINA, Va. - Jean Wilson Vaughan, 51, of 2188 Wilson Road died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at her residence.
Born Aug. 4, 1949, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Blanche P. Wilson, who survives, and the late Woodrow Samuel Wilson.
She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.
In addition to her mother of Virgilina, survivors include one son, Jason D. Vaughan of Virgilina; two sisters, Peggy W. Vance of Virginia Beach and Judy W. Trader of Kannapolis, N.C., and one brother, Woody Wilson of Amherst.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Davidson o9fficiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Thelma Hardy McBride
DANVILLE, Va. - Thelma Hardy McBride, 90, of 138 Kemper Road died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 26, 1910, in Mayberry, W.Va. she was the daughter of Albert Hardy and Emma Jean Rigney Hardy.
She was married
to Richard McBride, who predeceased her Aug. 7, 1989.
Mrs. McBride had lived in Danville since 1927. She was employed at S.S. Kresge Co., Woolworth’s & retired from Belk Leggett Dept. Store. She was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church, Belk Leggett Retirement Club, AARP, Good Samaritan Club & Danview Breakfast Club. She had been in declining health for about four months and in the hospital for a week.
Survivors include four cousins, Lewis Hardy of Richmond and Levi “L.P.” Rigney, Myrtle Staples and Elsie Eanes, all of Danville.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, at Mt. View cemetery with the Rev. David R. Turbyfill officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Swicegood Funeral Home.
Amy Newbill
PENHOOK, Va. - Amy Belle Newbill, 70, of 46 Edwards Road died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at her residence.
Born Aug. 2, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Oscar Acuff Robertson and Virginia Allen Robertson.
She was married
to William Brady Newbill Sr., who predeceased her.
She was last employed by J.D. Bassett Company in Bassett and was a homemaker. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church at Penhook where she was a member of the choir, Usher Board, Women’s Auxillary and the Joanna Club.
Survivors include three daughters, Celia Turner and Naomi Kellum, both of Martinsville and Cynthia Newbill of Virginia Beach; two sons, Michael Newbill of Martinsville and Elbert Newbill of the residence; one sister, Ardiba Kasey of Gretna; one brother, James Robertson of Washington, D.C.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, William Newbill Jr.; one sister, Ettrula Casey and one brother, Oscar Fred Robertson.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Spencer officiating. Interment
will follow at the Rising Sun Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home in Gretna and at other times at the residence.
Mary Wann
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Lee Yates Wann, 87, of Vandola Road died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000 at her residence.
Born Sept. 7, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George W. Wann and Inez H. Wann.
She was married
to Charlie Edward Wann, who predeceased her.
She worked for Russell Stover Candy Co. for many years. She was a member of Revelation Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, James Gray of Danville and one stepson, Edward Lee Wann of Buffalo Junction.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Gravel Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Buffalo Springs with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home in Clarksville.
Euolia Culley
DANVILLE, Va. - Euolia Culley, 83, of 1835 Halifax Road died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at her residence.
Born July 14, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James Allen Deshazor and Beatrice Fallen Deshazor, and was the stepdaughter of Virgie Deshazor, who survives.
She was married
to Major Culley, who predeceased her.
She was the owner and operator of Culley’s Nursing Home and was a member of Bethlehem Temple Holiness Church.
In addition to her stepmother, survivors include one son, Thomas Culley of Danville, two sisters, Francis Hunt of Ringold and Odaris Deshazor of Danville, five brothers, Harold Deshazor; Curtis Deshazor and Lawrence Deshazor, all of Danville; Ozonius Deshazor and Richard Deshazor, both of Ringgold; one grandchild and two-great grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. Matthew Scott officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Charles Durling
CLUSTER SPRINGS, Va. - Charles William Durling Jr., 52, of 2126 Paridise Road died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Aug. 16, 1948, in Brockton, Mass., he was the son of Charles William Durling Sr. and Helen Ingraham, who survive.
He was married
to Linda Lee Collins Durling, who survives.
He was employed as a truck driver for Sunshine Mills. He was also a member of the VFW in East Foxboro, Mass., the Woodside Hunting Lodge and was involved in Mansfield Midget Football and coached Mansfield Youth Soccer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his wife of the residence, his father of Brockton, Mass. and his mother of Crystal River, Fla., survivors include seven daughters, Kelley J. Durling of East Bridgewater, Mass.; Kerrie D. Murray of Union City, Pa.; Melinda Durling of North Attleboro, Mass. and Melissa Durling, Kendra Durling, Kimberly Durling and Marcy Durling, all of Cluster Springs; one son, Michael Durling of Cluster Springs; two brothers, Joe DeSalvio of Florida and Steve Durling of Vermont; two sisters, DeDe Cruff of Vermont and Debbie McQuade of Florida; three grandchildren and two expected grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, Andrew Durling.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home in South Boston.

Robert Henderson
HALIFAX, Va. - Robert Neal Henderson, 81, of 1016 Woodgrove Trail died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Woodveiw Nursing Home.
Born May 22, 1919, in Halifax County, he was the son of William K. Henderson and Annie Hastings Henderson.
He was married
to Nancy Norman Henderson, who survives.
He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, Shriners and a veteran of World War II. He was also a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Robert Henderson Jr. of Oxford, N.C.; Billy Henderson of Halifax and Gary Henderson of Gladys; two brothers, Lawrence Henderson of Halifax and William Henderson of Burlington, N.C.; one sister, Helen Brahe of Halifax; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Charles Henderson.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John’s Episcopal Church cemetery with Father David Booher officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Powell Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence of Billy and Pat Henderson, 1016 Woodgrove Trail in Halifax.
