Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Samuel Motley

CHATHAM, Va. - Samuel Pendleton Motley, 87, of Patton’s Care Home in Reidsville, N.C. died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 4, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Ballard Motley and Callie White Motley.
He was a retired farmer and was a member of Marion Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Mildred S. Parsons of Chatham and Ruth M. Daughrity of Danville.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Hollywood Baptist Church with the Rev. John Meadows and the Rev. Kyle Flora officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his sister, Midred Parsons at 3961 Weal Road.

Garnett Osborne

CHATHAM, Va. - Garnett Vie Osborne, 65, of Chatham died Monday Sept. 11, 2000, at Smyth County Community Hospital.
Born Sept. 27, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Roy Coleman Osborn and Anna Tosh Osborne.
He was retired from Klopman Mills.
Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Osborne Goad of Bassett and Tina Osborne Perdue of Rocky Mount; two sons, Danny Carroll Osborne of Callands and Donald Ray Osborne of Chatham; five sisters, Nancy Haskins of Callands; Margaret Ingram of Bassett; Irene Falls of Gretna and Annabelle Barbour and Edda Adkins, both of Chatham; three brothers, Wayne Osborne of Callands; Junior Osborne of Gretna and Arthur Osborne of Martinsville, special friend Diane Bray and six grandchidren.
He was predeceased by one son, Steve Vie Osborne and one brother, Roscoe Osborne.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Osborne Family cemetery, with the Rev. Ted Clifton and the Rev. Donald Osborne officiating.
Bassett Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Elizabeth B. Bradner

CHATHAM, Va. - Elizabeth B. Bradner age 77 of 197 Payneton Road Chatham, Virginia died Wednesday September 13, 2000 at her residence. Miss Bradner was born March 19, 1923 in Pittsylvania County Virginia.
She was the daughter of the late Joseph Marion Bradner and Mary McDowell Bradner.
She is survived by three sisters, Becky B. Shelton, Helen B. Hamlett both of Chatham, and Ruby B. Shelton of Gretna; two nieces, Penny Mason of Gretna, and Betty Erwin of Chatham; one nephew, Buddy Shelton of Gretna.
She was predeceased by one sister and one brother, Louise B. Shelton and Merrick Bradner. She was also predeceased by one nephew Landon Bradner.
She was a member of Payneton United Methodist Church.
Funeral Services will be conducted Friday September 15, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. from the Payneton United Methodist Church by Rev. Thomas Baggs. Interment icon will be in the Payneton United Methodist Church cemetery in Chatham, Va.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a sister-in-law, Mrs. Merrick Bradner 609 Old Mine Road, Chatham, Va. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth A. Brown

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Elizabeth A. (Betty) Brown, 97, of 405 Oakland Circle, Lynchburg, died Wednesday, September 13, 2000 at Avante at Lynchburg.
Born February 13, 1903, in Jersey City, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Weiss.
She was the wife of the late Enoch T. Brown of Danville. A former resident of Danville and Hampton, she had made her home with her daughter and son-in-law in Lynchburg since 1980. She retired in 1968 from Womack Electric Co. in Danville and was a member of Emanuel Episcopal Church in Hampton.
She is survived by two daughters: Carol (Mrs. Arnold Ray) Willard of Lynchburg and Cheryl Watkins of Evington, and four grandchildren: Debra G. (Mrs. Robert D.) Farley, of Fort Riley, Kan., Denise C. Willard of Fairfax, Tammy G. (Mrs. Jessie Leon) Clark of Martinsville and Bryan Watkins of Evington.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, at 11:00 a.m. from Townes Funeral Chapel in Danville by the Rev. James Mathieson with interment following in Green Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home on Friday night.
The family would like to thank Dr. James Vandewater and staff for their years of care and the entire staff of Avante at Lynchburg, and especially the select and skilled care units, for their care, compassion and love shown to Mrs. Brown and her family. God bless you all.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Patient Fund of Avante at Lynchburg, or Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Hampton.

Jack Bradley Jarrett

CASCADE, Va. - Mr. Jack Bradley Jarrett, of 2964 Huntington Trail in Cascade, Va. died Wednesday, September 13, 2000, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at First Baptist Church of Draper, Eden, N.C., with the Rev. Brian Cochram officiating.
Mr. Jarrett was born on December 14, 1925, the oldest child of the late Jack and Mae Warren Jarrett. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Frances Gilbert Jarrett; son, Jack Bradley Jarrett Jr. (Jay) and wife Sherri of Woodstock; daughter, Susan Jarrett Schlacter and husband Jed Schlacter of Long Island, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Jack Bradley Jarrett III (Brad), Laura Kathleen Jarrett, Meredith Hope Schlacter and Scott Jarrett Schlacter; two brothers, Bill Jarrett and wife Eva of Belmont, N.C., and Nick Jarrett and wife Betty of Cleveland, N.C.; two sisters, Doris Jarrett of Eden, NC, and Mary Frances Ponder and husband Lenny of Simpsonville, S.C.; special cousin, John Hodges and wife Ruth of Eden, N.C.; special niece and her family, Gloria Young Chandler and husband Jim Chandler of Roanoke, VA, and their children Scott Chandler of Blacksburg, and Shelley Chandler of Durham, N.C.; as well as many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and cousins.
Mr. Jarrett was a member of the graduating class of 1943 from Draper High School. He served in the Marine Corps, stationed in the South Pacific during WWII. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Draper and served the Lord there as a soloist, deacon, Sunday school teacher and chairman of the Missions Committee until his death. Mr. Jarrett retired in 1990 from Fieldcrest Mills after 43 years of service. He was a charter member of the Cascade Ruritan Club and served on the Brosville-Cascade Fire Department Board for several years.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday, September 15, at Fair Funeral Home in Eden, NC.

Sarah Watts

DANVILLE, Va. - Sarah Moore Watts, 66, of 208 Swanson Ave. died Wednesday, September 13, 2000, at her residence after one year of declining health.
Born Oct. 2, 1933 in Danville, she was a daughter of Jack Moore and Katie Huffstetler, who survives.
She had lived her entire life in the Danville area and was a member of the Forest Lawn Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Nancy Curry and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Wade Watts.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Albert Moser officiating. Interment icon will be at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence.

Barbara Allocca

DANVILLE, Va. - Barbara A. Allocca, 66, of 2898 Blairmont Drive died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 21, 1934, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a daughter of Oswin “Ted” Haucke and Helen Klein Haucke.
On Sept. 25, 1965, she was married to Arnold George Allocca, who survives. She was employed by D’Errico & Co. in Garden City, N.Y. as a legal secretary. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Presbyterian women.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Michael J. Allocca of Littleton, Colo. and A. George Allocca Jr. of Coral Springs, Fla.; two daughters, Joan P. Mason of Danville and Carol A. Carnevale of East Setauket, N.Y., and six grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn Jr. officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence of a daughter, 115 Forest Court.

Johnnie Conner Sr.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Johnnie E. Conner Sr., 69, of 5230 Philpott Road died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at his residence.
Born Aug. 8, 1931, in Halifax County, he was a son of Easley B. Conner and Etta Sue Long Conner.
He was married to Juanita McAbee Conner, who survives. He was the retired owner and operator of Conner Service Station and a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, survivors include two sons, Johnnie Conner Jr. and Thomas Conner, both of South Boston; one daughter, Patricia C. Pruitt of Roxboro, N.C.; one stepson, Carl Dixon of Roxboro, N.C.; one sister, Alleyne C. Bagby of South Boston; one brother, Harrison Conner of South Boston, and six grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Saunders and the Rev. Andrew Patterson officiating. Interment icon will follow at Black Walnut Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Ethel Jones

DANVILLE, Va. - Ethel Witcher Jones, 68, of 161 Graymont Place died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 6, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of George Washington Witcher and Nonnie Crews Witcher.
She was married to Thomas Jones, who survives. She was a member of Bethel Way of the Cross Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Margaret Jones of Greensboro, N.C. and Karen Jones Johnson of Bowie, Md.; one son, George Thomas Jones of Danville; four sisters, Etrula Wilson and Barbara Allen, both of Danville, and Rosa Madison and Ruth Watson, both of Mechanicsville, Md.; four brothers, Willow Witcher, George Witcher, John Witcher, all of Danville and Randolph Witcher of Blairs.
She was predeceased by one sister, Nannie Witcher and two brothers, Freddie and James Witcher.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethel Way of the Cross Church, Mt. Cross Road, with the Apostle Joseph Adams officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Brian Lloyd

GRETNA, Va. - Brian Richard Lloyd, 20, of 2204 Pittsville Road, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 21, 1980, in Danville, he was a son of Charles Anthony Lloyd and Frances Bass Lloyd, who survive.
He was a member of the Chatham Baptist Church. He played defensive and offensive tackle for the Powhatan Indians State Championship football team.
In addition to his parents of Gretna, survivors include one sister, Virginia Jolene Lloyd of Gretna; maternal grandfather, Perry Wade Bass of Richmond, and paternal grandparents, Charles Lindberg “Lindy” Lloyd of Gretna and Jackie H. Snead of Alton.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Providence Presbyterian Church cemetery with the Rev. Richard Saunders officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Powell Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Gladys Scarce

DANVILLE, Va. - Gladys Mae Bradley Scarce, 92, formerly of Keen St. died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after seven years of declining health. She had been a resident of Roman Eagle for six years.
Born July 14, 1908, in Sandy Level, she was a daughter of John Henry Bradley and Essie Lee Mahan Bradley.
On Oct. 6, 1928, she was married to Oscar Nathan Scarce, who predeceased her Feb. 26, 1973. She grew up in the Climax area prior to moving to Danville to live most of her life. She was a homemaker and member of Keen Street Baptist Church where she was a member of Dorcas Class and the Young at Heart Club.
Survivors include four daughters, Barbara S. Humphries and Shirley S. Elliott, both of Danville, and Betty S. Fox of Hickory, N.C. and Patsy S. Swicegood of Rock Hill, S.C.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one sister, Suenette Foust Moore.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Tom Brown officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence of daughter Shirley S. Elliott, 2060 Powhatan Drive, Hunting Hills.
The family suggests that memorials be made to Keen Street Baptist Church, 541 Keen St., Danville, Va. 24540.
