DANVILLE, Va. - Marion Holeman, 90, of 818 Monroe St. died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at the Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 21, 1909, in Stuart, she was the daughter of William Penn.
She was married
to Witcher Holeman, who predeceased her.
She is survived by one sister-in-law, Lillian Harrison.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday, at Union Street Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Griffith officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister-in-law, 850 Grove St.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Nannie Kent
DANVILLE, Va. - Nannie Catherine Guill Kent, 99, formerly of 1664 Halifax Road died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at Riverside Health Care Center, after six years of declining health.
Born April 16, 1901, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James Monroe Guill and Nannie Mildred Guill.
On Dec. 14, 1922, she was married
to James Thomas Kent, who predeceased her June 22, 1968.
She lived her life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas, where she was a homemaker and a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, James T. Kent of Blanche, N.C. and Charles E. Kent of Ringgold; two daughters, Cornelia Kent Haley Wludyka and Frances Kent Richardson, both of Danville; two brothers, James D. Guill of Blairs and Roger S. Guill of Danville; one sister, Bessie A. Bliss of Danville; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one brother, Joseph S. Guill.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday, at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, with the Rev. Clarence B. Jackson and the Rev. William C. Bullock officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Cornelia Kent Haley Wludyka, 1668 Halifax Road.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Abbie Mundie
DANVILLE, Va. - Abbie Meeks Mundie, 93, of 120 Fairway Drive died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at Martinsville-Henry County Memorial Hospital, after one month of declining health.
Born Aug 10, 1907, in Inverness, Miss., she was the daughter of George Asher Meeks and Mattie Louise Kinney Meeks.
She had lived in the Danville area for the past 20 years.
She had been employed by the Zellwood Farms in Zillwin, Fla. and also at Dan River Mills.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Curtis E. Warren of Oklahoma; one brother, Jack Meeks of Clanton, Ala.; two sisters, Mary Johnson of Clanton, Ala. and Fran Woodham of Dothan, Ala.; 15 grandchildren and over 24 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Baby Linda Ruth Warren and Mary Catherine Hardy and two brothers, Roy G. Warren and George E. Warren.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, at Danville Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. John Meadows officiating.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and at other times at the residence of Cathy Pruitt, 120 Fairway Drive.
Richard Phelps Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Richard Edward Phelps Sr., 74, of 718 Westview Drive died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000.
Born Aug. 26, 1926 in Semora, N.C., he was the son of Walter Phelps and Pattie Edward Phelps.
He was married
to Tillie Herndon Phelps, who survives.
He was retired from Hajoca after 33 years of service.
He was a member of Redman Pocahontas Tribe 124.
He was a member of Shelton Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, elder and past president of Sunday school Class.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Richard E. Phelps Jr. of Danville; one sister, Mary Whitsell of Durham, N.C.; one grandchild and two stepgrandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, at Townes Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
Robert Simpson
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert McNider Simpson, 66, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born Aug. 18, 1934, in Danville, Va. he was the son of Dr. and Mrs. John C. Simpson.
He graduated from the Danville Public School Systems and attended Randolph Macon College in Ashland.
He retired as an air traffic controller from F.F.A. in Loudoun County.
For the past five years, he lived in Wilmington, N.C. He was a member of Loudoun County Rescue Squad and the Red Cross. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include two sons, Robert M. Simpson of Salisbury, Md. and Matthew C. Simpson of Great Cacapon, W.Va.; one brother, Littleton W. Simpson of Charlottesville; two sisters, Anne Simpson Bendall of Marietta, Ga. and Rosa Gray Simpson Knight of Danville and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, Dr. John C. Simpson Jr.
A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, at Townes Memorial Chapel, with Father James Mathieson officiating.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Loudoun County Rescue Squad or the Red Cross.
Basil Carlton Warren
DANVILLE, Va. - Basil Carlton Warren, 85, formerly of 82 Schoolfield Drive died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000 at 6:40 a.m. at his daughter’s residence, 15314 Nalles Mill Road, in Culpepper, Va.
Born Jan. 10, 1915, in Danville, he was the son of the late James R. Warren and Martha Gwynn Warren.
He was married
to Ruth Jackson Warren, who predeceased him Oct. 17, 1998.
Mr. Warren was a member of Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was a member of the Men’s Fellowship and former deacon.
Until his retirement, he worked for forty-nine and one-half years as a machinist for Dan River, Inc. He was also a member of the Dan River Retirees Club.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Margaret A. Weakley and James O. Weakley, both of Culpepper; one grandson, James “Jamie” O. Weakley III of Culpepper and two brothers, Russell E. Warren and Robert L. Warren, both of Danville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday, at Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Myron Bruce officiating. Interment
will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.

Robert Lester Bryant
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Lester Bryant, 77, of 679 Arnett Blvd. died Wednesday Sept. 20, 2000 at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Bryant was born Feb. 22, 1923 in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of the late James William Bryant and Hattie Ellen Dodd Bryant. He is survived by one sister, Virginia Bryant Collie of Danville; one brother and his wife Jack Ralph and Marion Bryant of Kirkwood, Mo.; a niece, and her husband, Ellen Jo Willis and Benny Powell of Smith Mountain Lake; one other niece and seven nephews.
Special friends of Mr. Bryant’s were Herman and Beulah Murphy of Dry Fork and Stuart and Adylene Shelton of Chatham. He was predeceased by three sisters and three brothers, Thelma L. Bryant, Ruth B. Willis, Arlene Bryant, James W. Bryant, II and John Dodd Bryant and Elton Bryant.
Mr Bryant graduated from Spring Garden High School and received his B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He served in the European Theater during World War II. After working with NASA at Langely Field and Curtis-Wright Corp., he taught at Danville Community College. He was also proprietor of Gifts and Potpourri and later Framekraft at Dry Fork. In 1995, Mr. Bryant established the Bud Bryant Memorial Scholarship Fund for area students to attend Hargrave Military Academy.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Scott Funeral Home Chapel Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. by the Rev. Ed McClain. Interment
will be in the Bryant Family cemetery in Spring Garden. The Family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, from 5 to 8:00 p.m. at Scott Funeral Home.

Jerry Garland Strader
DANVILLE, Va. - Jerry Garland Strader, 65, of 833 Westover Drive, died at his residence Thursday morning Sept. 21, 2000 after a decline in health since March 1999.
Mr. Strader was born in Danville on Oct. 4, 1934, a son of the late William Strader and Lucille Stanley Strader who survives.
Mr. Strader was married
to Mary Holland Strader, who survives.
Mr Strader made his home in the Axton community of Pittsylvania County for many years. He worked for Dan River, Inc., and Averett College. He was of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith.
In addition to his wfe of the residence and mother of Danville, survivors include one daughter, Patricia Hawkins of Blairs; two sons, Robert G. Strader of Danville, and W. Vernon Strader both of Danville; one brother, Bobby Strader of Danville and three grandchildren; Mary Paige Strader, Kayla Marie Hawkins and Austin Clay Hawkins.
He was predeceased by a brother, Wesley Strader.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Griffin Duncan officiating.
Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m., and other times at the residence.

Ben Johnson Wyatt Jr.
GRETNA, Va. - Ben Johnson Wyatt Jr, 45, of 6256 East Gretna Road, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000 in the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
Born Dec. 20, 1954 in South Boston he was the son of B.J. “Pete” Wyatt, Sr. and Mary Rudd Wyatt of Gretna.
He was a truck driver for F.W.C. Inc. of Rustburg.
In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife, Robbin Stone Wyatt of the residence, a daughter, Shannon Chapman of Madison Heights; a stepdaughter, Michelle Simmons of Lynchburg; a sister, Patricia Scruggs of Gretna; a brother Andy Wyatt of Gretna; a half-brother, Elton Crotts of Fairfax and one grandchild, Alex.
Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000 at the Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden in Gretna by the Rev. Bert Johnson.
