DANVILLE, Va. - Paul Silas Johnson, 80, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at Reidsville Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 22, 1922, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Tom Johnson and Susie Baggett Johnson.
He was a member of Blue Stone Baptist Church and sang in the male chorus. He was employed as a farmer.
He was married to Jennie T. Johnson, who predeceased him.
He is survived by three daughters, Queen J. Coles, Jennie J. Winn and Annette J. Ferguson, all of Danville; four sons, Percell Johnson of Newport News, James Johnson, Nathaniel Johnson and Charlie Johnson, all of Danville; 27 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by seven children.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Blue Stone Baptist Church with the Rev. Timothy L. Warren officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Giles D. Pearson
CHATHAM, Va. - Giles D. Pearson, 85, of 660 Piney Road, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002 at Gretna Health Care Center.
Born in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John R. Pearson and Alsee Boswell Pearson.
He was a member of Piney Fork Baptist Church, was a farmer and a former member of the Climax Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by one brother, William "Billy" Pearson Sr. and one sister, Sallie Worley, both of Chatham.
He was predeceased by his wife, Melba Dalton Pearson; a son, Steve Pearson; three brothers, Johnny, Edmond and Thomas Pearson; and five sisters, Coryn Albert, Alma Crider, Genniper Davis, Hennie Hedrick and Mary Riddle.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Piney Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Glass and the Rev. David Turbyfill officiating. Interment will be in Greenbay Christian Church Cemetery.

Jacqueline Robertson Renn
DANVILLE, Va. - Jacqueline Robertson Renn, 71, of 10515 Highway 700, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at Brian Center for Health and Rehabilitation after one year of declining health and eight months in the hospital.
Born Jan. 5, 1931, in Danville, she was the daughter of Jesse Evans and Maggie Wells Evans.
She lived all of her life in Danville and Rockingham County, N.C. She worked for Piedmont Vending in food preparation for vending machines for a number of years.
She is survived by one sister and two brothers.
She was predeceased by one brother.
A private memorial service may be held at a later date.

Macie Roach
DANVILLE, Va. - Macie Roach, of 135 Oakhaven Drive, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at the residence of her daughter.
Born Jan. 27, 1905, in Myrtle Beach, S.C., she was a daughter of Louis Bungan Owens and Georgia Watts Owens.
She was married to Adolphus B. Roach, who predeceased her on Aug. 14, 1994.
She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church where she was in the Lottie Bigger Sunday School class. She was a charter member of the Town and Country Garden Club.
She is survived by one daughter, Audrey R. Cahill of Danville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three daughters and two brothers.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. William Blalock officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

Jack Vincent Thomson
DANVILLE, Va. - Jack Vincent Thomson, 80, of 110 Kitty Hawk Drive, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002 at his residence.
He was born on April 8, 1922 in Dover, Ohio, and was the son of Fred F. Thomson and Mary Ann Jones Thomson.
He was married for 58 years to Barbara Stoner Thomson, who survives.
He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Army Air Corp and he was a member of American Legion Post 325, where he was past commander and a member of the Honor Guard. He was also a member of the Elks and the Civitan.
He was a retired manager having worked for Kmart and later was associated with Commonwealth Home Health Care.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Jack Vincent Thomson II of Danville and Richard Stoner Thomson of Kentuck; one daughter, Cindy Thomson Richie of South Boston; one brother, Raymond Jones Thomson of Grand Blanc, Mich.; one sister, Jane Deloris Leuck of Charleston, S.C.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Linwood Daniel. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park with military graveside honors given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 325.

DARLINGTON, S.C. - Elizabeth Shorter Welch, 77, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, in a Florence hospital.
She was born in Danville, Va. and was a daughter of Peter Benjamin and Minnie Gay Webb Shorter.
She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery.

Phyllis Ann Chaney
DANVILLE, Va. - Phyllis Ann Chaney, 62, of 993 Mill Creek Road, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.
Born July 15, 1940, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Giles Robertson and Pernell Waller Robertson.
She was married to Robert Chaney, who predeceased her.
She was formerly employed at Dimon, Inc.
She is survived by two daughters, April Chaney of Decatur, Ga. and Penny Jackson of Danville; two sons, Ronald Chaney of Decatur, Ga. and Dennis Chaney of Roanoke; six sisters, Louise Rogers of Ringgold, Rosa Robertson, Pernell Jones, both of Danville, Josephine Beck, Dottie Motley, both of Blairs and Pandora Hairston of Lynchburg; four brothers, Lonzy Robertson of Martinsville, Percy Robertson, Frank Robertson and Eugene Robertson, all of Danville; and numerous grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Mack Robertson.

MIDDLE RIVER, Md. - Robert Homer Conley, 47, of 301 Fair River Drive, Apt. 3A, died Dec. 15, 2002, at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore.
Born Jan. 7, 1954, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Homer L. Conley and Louise Overby Conley.
He attended Dillard Junior High School in Caswell County, N.C. He also attended Pleasant Chapel Baptist Church in Sutherlin, Va.
He is survived by two daughters, Desatna Tucker of Danville, Va. and Tashika Hierr of Baltimore; a son, Robert Junior Conley of Baltimore; ten sisters, Mary G. Deshazor of Danville, Va., Marjorie Strothers of Clinton, Jewell Pyles of Baltimore, Christine Arnold of Decatur, Ga., Thelma Pyles of Lithonia, Ga., Deborah Williams of Danville, Va., Dorothy Mae Williams of Newburg, N.Y., Virginia Hubert of Lithonia, Ga., Gaynell Conley of Clinton and Belinda Goss of Indianapolis, Ind.; and six brothers, Wilbert Conley of Danville, Va. Larry Conley of Ringgold, Va., Carl Conley, Alvin Conley, both of Lithonia, Ga., James Conley of Edgewood and Royal Hunt of Ringgold, Va.

Ronald Wayne Hancock
DANVILLE, Va. - Ronald Wayne Hancock, 68, of 233 Wooding Ave., died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past seven years.
Born June 28, 1934, in Danville, he was the son of Leo J. Hancock, who predeceased him and Gladys Jean Edwards Hancock, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville and was a retired welder and motel manager. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a former member of American Legion Memorial Post #325. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was married to Pat Scearce Hancock, who survives.
In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by a daughter, Tracy Hancock Largen of Danville; two stepsons, Joseph M. Purnell of Danville and David F. Purnell of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Donna Tilbury of Greensboro, N.C.; one grandchild and two step grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, David Hancock.

COLUMBIA, Md. - Ernest Charlie Hiett, 58, of 6038 Cloudy April Way, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at the Howard County General Hospital in Columbia.
Born Aug. 3, 1944, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of the late Will Arthur and Alice Irby Hiett.
Survivors include two daughters, Taleah Averett of Danville, Va. and Denise Hiett of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sons, Lewis Hiett of Columbia, Michael Hiett and David Hiett, both of Baltimore; six sisters, Catherine Hooper of Bronx, N.Y., Rosa Henry of Elizabeth, N.J., Hattie Griffin, Margaret Carter, Lorraine Dixon and Patsy Howell, all of Danville, Va. and three brothers, Larry Hiett of Danville, Va., Johnnie Hiett of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Jack Mayo of Newark, N.J.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Fred Kidd officiating. Interment will follow in the Hiett Family Cemetery in Keeling, Va.

Josef Leicht
DANVILLE, Va. - Josef Leicht, 56, 162 Mountain Hill Road, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002 from a heart attack while in Jackson, Ohio.
Born March 10, 1946, in Weitersfeld, Austria, he was the son of Nikolaus Christian Leicht and Magdalena Bogner Leicht, both deceased. He grew up in Mansfield, Ohio.
He worked as an instrument fitter for H.B. Zachary Company of San Antonio, Texas.
He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Vietnam War.
He was of the Full Gospel faith.
He and his wife and child made Danville, Va. their home since 1990. He was a loving and caring husband and father.
He married Ann Weeks Leicht on April 30, 1982.
He is survived by one young son, Christopher Nikolaus Leicht; four brothers, Stefan Leicht of Austria, Chris Leicht of Galion, Ohio, Nikolaus Leicht and Pete Leicht, both of Mansfield, Ohio; and two sisters, Katherine Ries and Ann Bohland, both of Mansfield, Ohio.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Jones and the Rev. Leo Wiles officiating. There will be no graveside service. The family will receive friends at the residence following the funeral.

DANVILLE, Va. - Sallie G. Mabin, 89, of 146 Smith St., died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at the University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
She was born Aug. 23, 1913, in South Boston, to the late Wayman and Margaret Farmer Garrett.
She was married to Willard Mabin, who preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Florene M. Jeffries of Bronx, N.Y. and Margaret Smith of Hephzibah, Ga.; a sister, Amanda McLaughlin of Danville; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Laverne Bethel.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Beulah Baptist Church with Dr. Frankie Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
