Algie Saunders
DANVILLE, Va. - Algie D. Saunders, 69, of 404 Wilkerson Road died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 6, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Henry Saunders and Mellisa Gunn Saunders.
He was married
to Essie Ferrell Saunders, who predeceased him. He was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church and worked with the Public Works Dept. of Danville for 42 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Augusta Saunders and Mary Ann Robinson, both of Danville; one son, Algie D. Saunders Jr. of Ringgold; two sisters, Jessie Oliver of Ringgold and Gertrude Jones of Cinncinati, Ohio and 10 grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Kentuck Baptist Church with the Rev. Jesse Fitz officiating. Interment
will follow at the Sauders Family cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Nancy Jackson Sutherland
DANVILLE, Va. - Nancy Jackson Sutherland, age 64, of Heritage Towers, and formerly of Dalton Street, was found dead Monday afternoon November 27, 2000 at her residence.
Mrs. Sutherland was born in Danville on May 7, 1936, a daughter of the late Charlie M. Jackson and Disa Reed Jackson.
Mrs. Sutherland made her home in Richmond for 20 years, and she worked for the City of Danville, Parkes and Recreation Department for a number of years. She attended the New Life Community Church in Danville, and she enjoyed music and art.
She is survived by a son and daughter in law: Charles Wade and Cheryl Sutherland of Danville, and two Grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Stephen R. Smith. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 7:00 - 9:00 P.M., and at other times at the residence of her son and daughter in law at 1010 Brandon Court in the Mount Hermon community.

Mattie Powell
DANVILLE, Va. - Mattie Rakes Powell, 90, of 501 Bell drive died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at her residence.
Born July 15, 1910, in Patrick County, she was the daughter of Will Rakes and Judie Nolen Rakes.
She was married
to Earl Powell, who predeceased her. She lived in Danville most of her life where she worked at Dan River Mills for a number of years and retired at age 62. She was a member of Schoolfield Methodist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Lucy Rakes Booth of Danville and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Cassie Rakes Williams, Mamie Boothe and Ella Rakes Bowling and four brothers, Edd Rakes, Buck Rakes, Sam Rakes and Harvie Rakes.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Greeson officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Wesley Giles
BANNER, Ky. - Wesley Dodd "Red" Giles, 55, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at his residence.
Born Jan. 23, 1945, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of William "Bill" Giles and Flora D. Giles, who survives.
He was married
to Bonnie Giles, who survives.
He lived in Pittsylvania County prior to moving to Banner, Ky., where he had lived for the past 14 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Danville, Va., survivors include one brother, Robert P. Giles of Dry Fork, Va. and one sister, Betty G. Motley of Danville, Va.

Lee Berry Ingram
POWHATAN, Va. - Lee Berry Ingram, born in Danville, Va. daughter of the late Judge and Mrs. Calvin Berry passed away after a long illness, Nov. 28, 2000 at her home in Powhatan, Va. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Hugh H. Ingram, Jr. formerly of Danville, two daughters and their husbands: Debra B. & David A. Pegram of Richmond, Julie I. & Timothy L. Gresham of Powhatan, one brother: Calvin W. Berry of Dry Fork, one sister: Sally L. Berry of Roanoke and eight grandchildren: Abigail, David, Hugh, Evie, Marjorie and Dorrie Pegram, Miranda and Gracie Gresham. Mrs. Ingram was a loving devoted christian wife, mother, and grandmother and a true American patriot. She was a member of May Memorial Baptist Church, James River Republican Womens Club and Tri-Club. She was a graduate of George Washington High School. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, Inc., Powhatan. Letha Perkins
DRY FORK, Va. - Letha Lorraine Roberts Perkins, 76, of 5913 Whitmell School Road died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at her residence.
Born Oct. 19, 1924, in Pike County, Ky., she was a daughter of Lawrence Roberts and May Ferrell Roberts.
She was married
to William David Perkins, who predeceased her, July 25, 1983.
She spent most of her life in the Whitmell area of Pittsylvania County. She had worked for Dan River, Inc. and Fieldcrest Mills before retiring in 1976. She was a charter member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Lavina Thornton of Jacksonville, Fla. and Amy Sue Stanley of Burnwell, Ky.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Gilbert Hawks and the Rev. Charlie Cundiff officiating. Entombment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Obra Spangler
DANVILLE, Va. - Obra Everett Spangler, 77, of 204 Cumberland Drive died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born Feb. 16, 1923, in Monarch, W.Va., he was a son of William Spangler and Ollie Midkiff Spangler.
On Jan. 24, 1948, he was married
to Shirley Jackson Spangler, who survives.
He was a professor of Graphic Arts at Danville Community College until his retirement in 1985. He was an active member of Grace Design United Methodist Church. He served in the V.F.W. Post 647 and was a member of the Honor Guard of American Legion Post 325. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II and having survived the D-Day Invasion at Normandy, France.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Mark A. Spangler of Lawrenceville, Ga. and Bruce L. Spangler of Raleigh, N.C.; one daughter, Kristie Spangler of Halifax; one brother, Ray Spangler of Powellton, W.Va.; two sisters, Ruth S. Martin of Marietta, Ohio and Hazel S. Harvey of Tampa, Fla. and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Ershal Spangler, Willie Spangler and Clyde Spangler.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Design United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jeff Hale officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens, with full military honors by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at Grace Design United Methodist Church and other times at the residence.

King Walters
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - King Soloman Walters, 66, of 223 Wyatt Drive died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at his residence.
Born Jan. 29, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Willie Lee and Flossie Walters.
He was married
to Eunice Conley Walters, who survives.
In addition to his wife survivors include four sons, King Walters Jr. of Danville, Philip Soloman Walters, Stanley Lee Walters and Barry Darnell Walters, all of Fredericksburg; four daughters, Ann Saunders of Ringgold, Florence Hamlett of Semora, N.C., Patricia Jefferson and Rosetta Kay, both of Fredericksburg; 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday, at Apostolic Faith Temple, with the Bishop Willie Watkins officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, King Walters Jr., 436 Cedarbrook Drive.

Raymond Anderson Willie
CALLAWAY, Va. - Raymond Anderson Willie, age 83 of Callaway, Va. passed away at his home on November 29, 2000. He was the son of the late Harrison Willie, formerly of Mt. Airy, N.C. and Onie Wright Willie of Franklin County, Va. Raymond was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served his country with honor in World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife Alice Ollivean Willie, one brother, Thurman Willie, and one sister Mildred Hodges.
He is survived by two sons: Gerald Willie and wife Janet of Rocky Mount, Allen Willie and wife Linda of Penhook, three daughters: Judy Slaughter and husband Scott of Bremo Bluff, VA, Brenda Angell-Jones and husband Danny of Ferrum, and Lynda Brown of Goldsboro, NC.
Twelve grandchildren: Darryl Willie of Rocky Mount, VA, Duane Willie and wife Lisa of Rocky Mount, Sandy Gentry and her husband Greg, Ricky Woods and wife Debbie, Gary Woods and wife Marni, Barry Woods all of Bremo Bluff, VA, Jim Angell of Blacksburg, Tim Angell and wife Lisa of Callaway, Dana Willie and wife Brandi of Staunton, Joey Willie of Penhook, Kimberly Brown of Springdale, AR and Derek Brown, Phoenix, AZ.
Ten great-grandchildren: Ashley, Adam, and Emily Willie of Rocky Mount, Michael and Morgan Gentry, Zachary, Lexie, Dustin, Amanda, and Taylor Ann Woods all of Bremo Bluff, VA.
Also surviving are his three sisters: Faye Hodges, Gladys Campbell and Virginia Starky all of Rocky Mount, VA. Two sister-in-laws and one brother-in-law: Vetra Collins of Saltville, Ruth Hall of Catawba, and Joe Miller of Saltville. He also leaves to mourn a wonderful group of nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2:00 p.m. Saturday with Dr. William R. Shively officiating. Interment
will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Callaway Rescue Squad or Carilion Hospice Services of Franklin County. Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Friday with family receiving friends 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Flora Funeral Service, South Main Street, Rocky Mount.
Helen Buckner
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Helen Link Buckner, 94, of 103 Rosehill Drive died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at the Woodview.
Born Jan. 30, 1906, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of William Fielding Link and Sarah Reaves Link.
She was married
to John W. Buckner, who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Exie Shotwell of Richmond and Shirley Buckner of South Boston and one brother, Lonnie Link of Alton.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Calvary United Methodist Church cemetery, Alton, with the Rev. Steve Vineyard officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Brooks Funeral Home.
Fulton Chandler Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Fulton Lee Chandler Jr., 55, of 153 Chatlaine Ave. died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born May 5, 1945, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of Fulton Chandler Sr. and Helen Tucker Chandler.
Before his decline in health, he was employed by Dan River Inc.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include six sisters, Mademoiselle Chandler and Naomi Hamlett, both of Dry Fork, Mable Fitzgerald of Danville, Willie Ester Wharton of Capital Heights, Md., Celeste Brown of Henderson, N.C. and Joyce Blunt of Washington, D.C. and three brothers, Henry Chandler of Merced, Calif., Robert Chandler of Capital Heights, Md. and Dexter Chandler of Danville.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. Arthur Brown officiating. Military Rites will be provided by the American Legion Post 29 Honor Guard.
