Charlie Clay
DANVILLE, Va. - Charlie Henry Clay, 77, of 224 Courtland St. Apt. 333 died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 12, 1923, in Halifax County, he was a son of Paul Carrington Clay and Lottie Montgomery Clay.
On Nov. 5, 1948, he was married
to Dora Wyatt Clay, who predeceased him, Feb. 1998.
He worked at Warrco Constuction Company as a wire technician, until his retirement. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Edna Cundiff of Danville and Linda Burton of Broken Arrow, Okla.; one son, Charlie James Clay of Danville; four sisters, Enoila Johnson and Florene Simpson, both of Gretna, Pokie Bliss of South Boston and Joyce Rhodes of Florida; three brothers, Willie Clay of Brookneal, Earl Clay of Sutherlin, Owen Clay of Georgia and Robert Millner of Danville; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one son, Lewis Carrington Clay; two sisters, Virginia Shipp and Viola Crews; four brothers, J.T. Clay, Johnny Clay, Silas Clay and Junior Clay and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jimmy Hussey officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence of his daughter, 2357 Moorefield Bridge Road.
Roger Cowan
MARQUETTE, Neb. - Roger L. Cowan, 73, of 55 Willow Bend died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at his residence.
Born Jan. 24, 1927, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Clarence Cowan and Lillie Cowan.
On Oct. 8, 1988 he was married
to Shirley L. Melcher, who survives.
He attended George Washington High School in Danville, Va. He was a former employee of the Imperial Tobacco Company in Danville, and was employed by LeFebure Corporation, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as the vice president of sales until his retirement in 1992, when he moved to Marquette. He was a member of the Scottish Rite of Sioux City, Iowa and the Masonic Lodge No. 436 of Gadbrook, Iowa.
He entered the U.S. Navy in Nov. 1944 and served in the South Pacific until 1946. In 1951 he entered the U.S. Air Force and served until his retirement in 1969.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by four sons, Todd Cowan of Denver, Colo., Paul Cowan of Olathe, Kan., Roger Cowan of Colbert, Ga. and Arden Nagengast of Lincoln; one daughter, Diane Hyde of Littleton, Colo.; two sisters, Evelyn Hardy and Lois Walker, both of Danville, Va. and nine grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a twin granddaughter and two brothers, Kenneth Cowan and Richard Cowan.
A funeral will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church of Central City, Neb., with the Rev. Joy Savage officiating.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Tabitha Hospice, 4720 Randolph St., Lincoln, Neb. 68510, Grand Island Group.

Esther Hudson
DANVILLE, Va. - Esther Mae Butcher Hudson, 89, of 421 Terry Ave. died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at her residence, after 14 months of declining health.
Born July 8, 1911, in Danville, she was a daughter of Charles Edward Butcher and Sallie Jamerson Butcher.
In June 1935, she was married
to William Jerry Hudson, who predeceased her, Feb. 27, 1982.
She had lived her entire life in the Danville area, where she was a homemaker and a member of Malmaison Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Charles William Hudson of Burlington, N.C.; one daughter, Lois H. Haywood of Danville; one sister, Mamie Butcher Wallace of Whitmell; one brother, Charles Pritchett Butcher of Richmond and three grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Ruby Butcher Adkins.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, with Elder Julian Wlliams and Elder C.B. Davis officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Matilda Hunt
NEWARK, N.J. - Matilda Hunt, 74, of 85 Schuyler Ave. died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at Beth Israel Hospital, Newark.
Born July 14, 1926, in Milton, N.C., she was a daughter of John Clayborne and Lillie Tucker Clayborne.
She was married
to Sam Pete Hunt, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Barton, Helen Hunt, Mattie Hunt and Elizabeth Hunt, all of Newark; and four sons, Sam Hunt Jr. and Nathaniel Hunt, both of Landover, Md., Willie Hunt and Richard Hunt, both of Yanceyville, N.C.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel. Interment
will follow at Ebenezer Baptist Church cemetery.

Manie Farthing Reynolds
CHATHAM, Va. - Manie Farthing Reynolds age 87 of 2045 Old Red Eye Road Chatham, Virginia died November 29, 2000 at the Gretna Health Care Center. Mrs. Reynolds was born February 18, 1913 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late George Thomas Farthing and Euna Rebecca Allen Farthing. She was married
to Guy Percy Reynolds June 15, 1957 who predeceased her. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Linda R. and Ken Cummins of Roanoke; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Susan Reynolds of Landenberg, PA; one brother and sister-in-law, Iris R. Farthing of Callands; five grandchildren, David Cumins, Mary Margaret Ong, Johnathan Reynolds, Stefanie Reynolds, and Amanda Reynolds. She was predeceased by one sister, Marion Farthing, and one brother, George Thomas Farthing, Jr. and one granddaughter, Kimberly Reynolds.
She was a member of Greenpond Baptist Church and was the recording secretary for twenty years. She was a member of WMU and was secretary and treasurer for many years.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday December 2, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. From the Greenpond Baptist Church by Rev. John McCray and Rev. Daryl Joyce. Interment
will be in the Green Pond Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence 2045 Old Red Eye Road, Chatham, VA. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Greenpond Baptist Church parking lot fund. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Laura Lawson
DANVILLE, Va. - Laura Via Lawson, 80, of 125 Hamilton St. died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 3, 1920, in Bluefield, W.Va., she was a daughter of Richard Via and Josephine Noble Via.
She was married
to Robert L. Lawson, who survives.
She was a member of Jones Chapel Baptist Church, where she served as Deaconess, Usher and was on the Missionary Circle.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Gloria Jean Johnson of New York, N.Y.; one adopted daughter, Genea Totten of Danville; six grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Jones Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Hayes McConnell officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gadrdens.
The remains may be viewed 2-8 p.m. Saturday at L.H. Brooks and Bros. Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at other times at the residence.
Lawrence Niblett
CHATHAM, Va. - Lawrence Niblett, 71, of 1988 Strawberry Road died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 18, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Millard Niblett and Nora Hubbard Niblett.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three sisters, Alice Niblett and Elsie Niblett, both of Chatham and Mary Prunty of Roanoke.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Macedonia Baptist Church, with the Rev. Damon Hairston officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

William Owen
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - William Aaron Owen, 72, of 401 Leigh St. died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born April 17, 1928, in Halifax County, he was a son of Elmer Alfred Owen and Nannie Lula Elliott Owen.
He was married
to Helen Sadler Owen, who survives.
He was retired from Keystone Mills.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, William Thomas Owen of South Boston and James Owen of Julian, N.C.; one brother, Ray Owen of Clarksville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Dick Owen, Johnnie Owen and James Owen.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.

Toni Saunders
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Toni Fallen Saunders, 43, of 337 McKinney St. died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at M.C.V., Richmond.
Born April 25, 1957, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Roy Preston Fallen and Delores Smith, who survive.
She was married
to Jerry Saunders, who survives.
She was employed by Glen-More, where she worked as a seamstress. She was a member of Second Baptist Church, where she served as a pianist and Sunday School teacher.
In addition to her husband of the residence, her father of Nathalie and mother of Halifax, survivors include one stepfather, Franklin Smith of Halifax; one son, Zach Saunders of South Boston; one daughter, Reba Saunders of South Boston; one brother, David Fallen of Nathalie; two sisters, Donna S. Matthews of Virgilina and Robin S. Bishop of Clarksville, Tenn; and one grandmother, Geraldine Moorefield of South Boston.
She was predeceased by one son, Jonathan Saunders.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Second Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jim Smith and the Rev. Richard Saunders officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.

Willie West
DANVILLE, Va. - Willie Sue West, 82, of 639 Lee St. died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Beverly Health Care Center, Martinsville, where she had been a resident a short time.
Born Feb. 23, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John Henry Reynolds and Stella Davenport Reynolds.
She was married
to Ed West, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one sister, Pearl Wilson of Danville and two brothers, George Reynolds and Ulysses Reynolds, both of Danville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel, with Elder Derrick Adams officiating.
Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
