NATHALIE, Va. - Carlton Raymond West, 87, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 16, 1913, in Halifax County.
Survivors include one brother-in-law, Howard Conner of Philadelphia; one niece, Mary Yorkshire of Washington, D.C. and one nephew, James West of Washington, D.C.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at New Shiloh Baptist Church, Nathalie, with the Rev. Sylvester Crawley officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at the church.

Sarah Younger
GRETNA, Va. - Sarah Effie Nash Younger, 78, of Gretna Health Care Center died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at her residence.
Born Feb. 17, 1922, in Danville, she was a daughter of Edward N. Nash and Mildred Heneritta Towler.
She was married
to Frank Younger, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Vance Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Mildred Jean Hinton of Danville; one son, the Rev. Larry Younger of Martinsville; two stepbrothers, Frank Adams and Bill Adams, both of Danville; one stepsister, Gertrude Adams of Danville; nine grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Vance Street Baptist Church, with the Rev. H.L. Dickerson officiating. Interment
will follow Monday morning at Danville National cemetery.
The remains may be viewed 2-8 p.m. Saturday at L.H. Brooks Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at other times at 120 Tate St.
John Barley
DANVILLE, Va. - John Robert Barley, 81, of 845 Glendale Ave. died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 30, 1919, in Danville, he was a son of California Barley and Hattie Lou Wimbush Barley.
He was married
to Dorothy Ann Barley, who predeceased him.
He was a retired construction worker.
Survivors include two daughters, Doris Barley and Vera Adams, both of Danville; one sister, Nannie Stone of Danville and one brother, Howard Barley of Danville.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. James Williams officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Effie Beale
GRETNA, Va. - Effie Catherine “Kitty” Beale, 70, of 2164, Music St. died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 8, 1930, in Franklin County, she was a daughter of William Curtis Brown and Sallie Kate Brooks Brown. She was married
to Luther W. Beale, who survives.
She was a member of Midway Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was a former member of the Eastern Star.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Jerry Beale of Gretna; six brothers, J.C. Brown of Roanoke, Ruben Brown of Martinsville, Paul Brown, Perry Brown and Jewell Brown, all of Glade Hill and Jimmy Brown of Hurt and six sisters, Elva Kirby of Salem, Chris Pendleton and Ruth Sigmon, both of Rocky Mount, Ann Agee of Glade Hill, Sue Sigmon of Callaway and Patsy Belcher of Penhook.
She was predeceased by one son, Mike Beale and one sister, Melba Pendleton.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Midway Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Lynn Marstin officiating. Interment
will follow at Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Garnett Conner
CHATHAM, Va. - Garnett Bedford Conner, 65, of 1080 Dry Bridge Road died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at his residence.
Born April 29, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Maynard Conner and Louise Haskins Conner, who survives.
He was a member of Chermont Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, survivors include three daughters, Linda C. Emerson, Janet C. Fuller and Susan C. Slaughter, all of Chatham; three sons, Garnett Leroy Conner, Tony Conner and John Conner all of Chatham; three brothers, Onyx Conner, Ray Conner and Ryland Conner, all of Chatham; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, Roger Conner.
A graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Hillcrest Burial Park with the Rev. R. G. Rowland officiating.
The family will receive friends at 274 Hurt Street.

Midred Crews
CHATHAM, Va. - Mildred Adkins Crews, 69, of 4249 Strawberry Road died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born June 12, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Rufus Adkins and Mable Lee Parker Adkins.
She was married
to Percy Frank Crews, who predeceased her. She was a member of Salem Christian Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Deborah Ann C. Hammock of Danville; two sons, Ricky Crews and Kenneth L. Crews, both of Chatham; two sisters, Rachel Gross and Mae Tosh, both of Chatham; two brothers, Junior Adkins of Rocky Mount and Clarence Adkins of Chatham; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Frank W. Crews.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Burial Park, with the Rev. Steve Crews officiating. Interment
will follow at Hillcrest Burial Park.

Sylvia Bibee
RINGGOLD, Va. - Sylvia Ann Harris Bibee, 61, of 420 Owl Road died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at her residence, after 3 years of declining health.
Born Aug. 30, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the Rev. Lennie James Harris and Jessie Frances Marshall Harris.
On April 5, 1958, she was married
to Roy Lee Bibee, who survives.
She had lived her entire life in the Mountain Hill community of Pittsylvania County, where she was a homemaker. She was a charter member of the Non Denominational Christian Tabernacle in the Mountain Hill community, where she served as secretary and treasurer for over 30 years.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Roy Lee Bibee Jr. of Fieldale; two daughters, Pattie Bibee Owen of Danville and Kathy Bibee Crane of Ringgold; three brothers, Alfred James Harris, Leon Edward Harris and Luther Eugene Harris, all of Ringgold; two sisters, Ethel Garnell Hobbs and Patsy Dean Wilson, both of Ringgold and ten grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Non Denominational Christian Tabernacle, Mountain Hill community, with the Rev. Billy Hamlett and the Rev. Jerry Hobbs officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Non Denominational Christian Tabernacle and other times at the residence.

Walter Blue
DANVILLE, Va. - Walter Samuel Blue, 69, of Danville, formerly of Chase City, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000.
Survivors include two sisters, Mozelle Dalton and Geneva Barker, both of Danville and two brothers, Robert Blue and Henry Blue, both of Chase City.
A graveside service was held Sunday at Crestview Memorial Park, South Hill, with the Rev. Phillip Upton officiating.

Hallee Carey
DANVILLE, Va. - Hallee Margaret Shaw Carey, 91, formerly of Richmond died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home.
Born July 6, 1909, in Fairfax, Mo., she was a daughter of Edward M. Shaw and Jessie Beck Shaw.
On Feb. 26, 1927, she was married
to Claude Henry Carey Sr., who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker most of her life. She was a member of Wamsley Boulevard United Methodist Church, Richmond, where she taught Sunday School. She did extensive volunteer work with the Clothes Cottage and Hermitage Methodist Home. She was honored by the Governor of the State of Virginia for her volunteer work.
Survivors include three daughters, Margaret Calton and Marilyn Williams, both of Missouri and Marjory Hinkle of Richmond; two sons, Claude H. Carey Jr. and Gary W. Carey, both of Danville; one sister, Zeta Minke of Princeton, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one brother, Gene Shaw.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park, with the Rev. Lee D. Ellison officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home and other time at the residence of her son, Claude Carey Jr., 2185 Old Richmond Road.
David Lee Giles
BLAIRS, Va. - David Lee Giles, 94, of 912 David Giles Lane died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three and a half years of declining health and a three-day stay at the hospital.
Born June , 1906, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Ike Giles and Annie Kate Hutcherson Giles.
He was married
to Eva Dallas Giles, who survives, December 28, 1935.
He was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church where he served on the Official Board, and was a member of the Senior Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Golden Age Club and the Fishermans Club for twenty years. He lived his entire life in Pittsylvania County. The last sixty years he has lived in Blairs. He was a retired farmer.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Mary G. Gibson and son-in-law Nelson W. Giles of Lynchburg and Clydene G. Oakes of Blairs; one son and daughter-in-law, Dallas L. Giles and Nancy D. Giles of Coshocton, Ohio; four sisters, Janie G. Robertson, Louise G. Lewis and Evelyn G. Jones, all of Danville and Kitty G. McGregor of Blairs; six grandchildren, David N. Gibson, Daniel L. Gibson, D. Lee Giles, Nathan G. Gibson, Ellen O. Moorefield and J. Matthew Oakes and three great-grandchildren, Hunter Lee Gibson, Taylor Lauren Gibson and Mason Leigh Moorefield.
He was predeceased by two brothers, J. Vernie Giles and Robert Clyde Giles; two sisters, Callie G. Brumfield and Garland G. Merricks and one son-in-law, James T. Oakes.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oakland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Lewis and the Rev. R. Fletcher Hardy III officiating. Interment
will follow at Oakland United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Monday at Oakland United Methodist Church and other times at the residence, 912 David Giles Lane, Blairs.
