Ruth Lanier
BUENA VISTA, Va. - Ruth Savage Lanier, 73, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville.
Born March 16, 1927, in Danville, she was a daughter of George N. Savage and Ruth T. Savage.
She was married
to Willie E. Lanier Jr., who survives.
She was a bookkeeper for Lanier’s Lawn Mower Service. She was a member of Buena Vista Presbyterian Church and the Eastern Star Chapter 125.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Willie E. “Eddie” Lanier III.; two sisters, Betty McCarty of Petersburg, W.Va. and Ann Savage of Brosville; two brothers, George N. Savage Jr. of Ringgold and Robert Savage of Colorado Springs, Colo.
She was predeceased by two sons, Robert Lanier and Tommy Lanier.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bolling, Grose and Lotts Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Sally Robinson officiating. Interment
will follow at Green Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Bolling, Grose and Lotts Funeral Service.
Minnie Law
NORFOLK, Va. - Minnie Lee Morgan Law, 100, died at Sentera Nursing Center, on December 2, 2000. Survivors include daughters Margie L. Taylor of Norfolk, Elizabeth L. Clemons and husband, Joe and Virginia L. Hart and husband Ben, of Tallahassee, FL, sons, Charles J. Law, Jr. and wife Camilla of Raleigh, N.C. and S. Edward Law of Athens, Ga. eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Thursday 11 a.m. at Bethesda Presbyterian Church, Ruffin, N.C.,with interment to follow at Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday 7-9 p.m., at Harrelson Funeral Home in Yanceyville, N.C.
Memorials may be made to Women of the Church Fund at Bethesda Presbyterian Church, Ruffin N.C.
Lila Johnson
DANVILLE, Va. - Lila Frances Almond Johnson, 87, of Riverside Health Care Center, formerly of East Thomas St. died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after six months of declining health and a two and one-half week stay at the hospital.
Born Aug. 18, 1913, in Green County, Ga., she was a daughter of Henry Thomas Almond and Mary Frances Hazlett Almond.
She was married
to Roy Johnson, who predeceased her on Sept. 15, 1975.
She had lived in Danville for the past 70 years, where she worked for Dan River, Inc. for 25 years before retiring at the age of 62. She was a member of the Tabernacle.
Survivors include two daughters, Mildred Johnson Hathaway of Danville and Marie Johnson Davis Cook of Chatham; one son, William Floyd New of Danville; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. W. Cleo Hunley officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Robert Davis, 58 Ashlawn Drive.
Ethel Jones
DANVILLE, Va. - Ethel Garland Jones, 99, of 128 Swanson St. died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at her residence.
She was born June 10, 1901, in Pittsylvania County.
She was married
to Robert Jones, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Apostolic Faith Temple, Ringgold, she was their oldest living member.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel, with the Bishop W.A. Watkins officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
Darius Lee
ATLANTA, Ga. - Darius Jumar Alexander Lee, 8, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Gwinnett Medical Hospital.
Born Feb. 9, 1992, he was a son of James Anthony Lee and Ruby LaVern Fooks.
He was a student at Taylor Magnet School during the 1999-2000 school year.
In addition to his parents survivors include one stepmother, LaShera Ann Lee of Danville, Va.; one sister, Jakeet Lashey Scott of Danville, Va.; two brothers, Corey Latez Cunningham of Atlanta and James Anthony Lee Jr. of Danville, Va.; one paternal grandmother, Iretha M. Lee of Danville, Va.; maternal grandfather, Roger Hilman Fooks of Atlanta; maternal grandmother, Barbara Gean Fooks of Spartanburg, S.C.; one stepgrandmother, Paterica May Fooks of Atlanta; great-grandmother, Ruby Lee Purvis of Spartanburg, S.C.; great-grandparents, Hilman and Mary Fooks of Maryland; and one great-great-grandmother, Leila B. Alexander of Spartanburg, S.C.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Spartanburg, S.C., with the Rev. George Dawns officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home of a great-grandmother, Ruby Lee Purvis, 187 Eastpearl St., Spartanburg, S.C.

Horace Pippin
YANCEYVILLE, Va. - Horace Hart Pippin, 83, of 517 Main St. East died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Person County Hospital, Roxboro.
Born Sept. 21, 1917, in Bunn, he was a son of Charlie C. Pippin and Bessie Hart Pippin.
He was married
to Edith Y. Pippin, who predeceased him, Sept. 14, 1997.
He was retired from the North Carolina Department of Corrections and was of the Baptist faith.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon P. Stanfield of Yanceyville and Dawn P. Coleman of Leasburg and three grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one granddaughter.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Yanceyville First Baptist Church cemetery, with the Rev. Claude Harrelson officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church and other times at the residence.

Lillie Mae Goodman
DANVILLE, Va. - Lillie Mae Buck Goodman, 87, of 685 Oakland Drive died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 29, 1913, in Danville, she was the daughter of Charles Williamson Buck Sr. and Minnie Pettigrew Buck.
On Dec. 12, 1936, she was married
to Luther Herman Goodman Sr. She worked at Brookside Industrial as a sewer. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Bruce A. Goodman of Ringgold; one daughter, Eula G. Barber and one sister, Margaret Waller, both of Danville; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, L. Herman Goodman Jr.; one sister, Clara Wright and three brothers, Bill Buck, Charles Buck Jr. and Ernest Buck.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Newton and the Rev. Henry Taylor. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home and other times at the residence and at the residence of a son, Bruce Goodman, 486 One Hundred Acre Road, Ringgold.

Clarence Gordon
DANVILLE, Va. - Clarence “Bubba” Gordon, 93, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at Gretna Health Care Center where he had been a resident for 11 years.
Born Oct. 4, 1907, in Danville, he was a son of William Howard Gordon and Ulalia Clark Gordon. He spent most of his life in Danville and was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include one nephew, Gordon Scott of Danville, and two nieces, Elayne Scarce of Danville and Paula Trese of New York.
A graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Linwood R. Hairfield Sr. officiating.

Herbert Cleveland Peters
DANVILLE, Va. - Herbert Cleveland Peters, age 81, of 221 Lyndale Drive, went to be with the Lord Wednesday morning December 6, 2000. He had been in declining health for the past two years.
Mr. Peters was born in Bluefield, West Virginia on August 11, 1919, and was the son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Peters of West Virginia.
He was first married
to Mary Peters who predeceased him, and then married
Thelma Holder Hines Peters in 1982 who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II.
Mr. Peters was the manager of Butler Realty for many years before retiring, and was also a self employed plumber. He was a member of Riverview Baptist Church where he was a deacon.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include one step daughter and step son in law: Francis and David “Joe” Hobson of Danville, and one sister: Lillian Underwood of Ahoskie, North Carolina, and one step grandchild: David Hobson.
He was predeceased by four brothers and one sister, and also predeceased by a step grandchild, Brian Keith Hobson, Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Duane Blevins. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens where military honors will be performed by the American Legion Memorial Post #325 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 P.M., and at other times at the residence of David and Frnaces Hobson at 155 Ruskin Street.
Sarah Talley
SCOTTSBURG, Va. - Sarah Inez Baker Talley, 80, of 2106 Cole Lane died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born July 16, 1920, in Harnett County, N.C., she was the daughter of Columbus C. Baker and Mary Catherine Patterson Baker.
She was first married
to Clifton Shearin and then to Marvin Talley Sr. She was a member of Carrboro Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Marvin Talley Jr. of Alberta, Canada; one daughter, Judy Overby of Scottsburg; two sisters, Betty Peel of Garner, N.C.; Ruth Jenkins of Creedmoor, N.C.; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Westwood Memorial Park, Carrboro, N.C. with the Rev. Jim Greenlee officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Joe Demarcus
RINGGOLD, Va. - Eugene "Joe" Franklin Demarcus, 75, formerly of 1868 Ringgold Road died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2000, at Riverside Health Care Center after several years of declining health. He had been a resident of Riverside Health Care Center for six weeks.
Born July 18, 1925, in Danville, he was a son of Lucion Eugene Demarcus and Vila Crane Demarcus.
He was married
to Frances Ella Rogers Demarcus, who survives. He lived all of his life in Ringgold. He retired from Dan River Inc., Schoolfield Division #4-B weave as a loom fixer after 40 years of service.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Annette D. Dodson of Ringgold, Betty D. Johnston of Concord, Calif. and Jackie D. Stevens of Thomasville, N.C.; two sons, Billy F. Demarcus and Lucion E. Demarcus, both of Ringgold; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Annette Dodson, 1296 Little Creek Road, Ringgold.
