Anna C. Reid
DANVILLE, Va. - Anna C. Reid, 87, died Friday, December 8, 2000. She was born in Halifax County on March 3, 1913 and lived most of her life in Danville, Virginia where she retired from Dan River Mills after 50 years of service.
She was a member of Emmanuel Church of the Brethren where she served on the church board and taught Sunday school for several years.
Mrs. Reid was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Dale Reid and her daughter Patricia R. Dunlap. She is survived by her son Robert N. Reid of Fayetteville, NC; her daughter Leota R. Boyd, Newport News, VA; two sisters, Evelyn Durham of Reidsville, NC and Louise Deaton of Danville, a brother, Letcher E. Childress, Jr., of Reidsville, NC; five grandchildren; Janet McIntosh, Richard Dunlap, Robert N. Reid, Jr., Jennifer Brodie, and Patrick Boyd; four great grandchildren; Nichole and Shannon McQueen, Tyler and Spencer Dunlap.
Funeral services will be held at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel on Monday December 11, 2000 at 2:00 p.m., by the Rev. Leonard Martin. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Sunday December 10th from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Interment
will be at Highland Burial Park.

Barbara Bauguess
DANVILLE, Va. - Barbara Spann Bauguess, 72, died Saturday, De4c. 9, 2000, at the Brian Center, Clayton, N.C.
Born June 16, 1928, in Elkin, N.C., she was a daughter of Hillary Span and Bertha Miller Spann.
She was married
to Robert W. Bauguess, who predeceased her.
She lived in Danville 50 years, where she had worked for Dan River Mills in her earlier years.
Survivors include one son, Jerry W. Bauguess of Danville; one daughter, Lynn B. Parrish of Clayton, N.C.; one brother, Johnny Spann of Elkin, N.C.; five sisters, Wanda Church of Burlington, N.C., Hilda Hanes of Winston-Salem, N.C., Helen Woodruff, Mary Linda Anderson and Myrtle Douglas, all of Elkin, N.C. and two grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Bobby W. Bauguess and one brother, Alton Spann.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
Lena Morris Dillard
DANVILLE, Va. - Lena Morris Dillard, 98, formerly of 303 Cumberland Drive died Saturday, December 9, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she had resided since September 4, 1998.
Born October 1, 1902, in Danville, she was the daughter of Thomas Leslie Morris and Mary Alice Neal Morris. She was married
to Joseph Green “Joe” Dillard on July 7, 1920 who predeceased her November 29, 1979.
Mrs. Dillard lived all of her life in Danville and was an employee of Danville Knitting Mill for 36 years. She was a devout Christian of the Baptist faith and always places the welfare of all other persons before self.
Survivors include her only child, a daughter, Dorothy D. Dickens whom she made her home with for 19 years prior to entering Roman Eagle, two grandchildren, Thomas L. “Tom” Dickens of Merced, CA. and Ernest L. “Ernie” Dickens, Jr. of Colorado Springs, CO., seven great-grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also deceased by a brother, Whit L. Morris.
A Graveside Service will be held Tuesday, December 12, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at Highland Burial Park with Mrs. Dillard’s great-nephew, Steven L. Tate officiating.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home Monday, December 11, 2000 from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law at 303 Cumberland Drive. Memorial donations may be sent to the charity of your choice.
Nina Edmunds
CHATHAM, Va. - Nina Evalena Pruett Edmunds, 91, of 1421 Hickory Road died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000.
Born May 30, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John Ballard Pruett and Mittie Cora Watson Pruett.
On Dec. 27, 1936, she was married
to Coleman Bennett "Doc" Edmunds, who died 1988.
She graduated from Averett College in 1930 and the College of William and Mary in 1933. She was a retired teacher, having taught at Renan and Sandy Level Schools in the 1930's and later at Gretna High School in the 1950's and 1960's. She was a member of Maude Clement Garden Club, the Rawley Martin Chapter of the U.D.C. and Chatham Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Mittie Lou Edmunds of the residence.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Aubrey Jackson Pruett, in 1966.
A funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Chatham Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Walker Pettyjohn and the Rev. Harry Meadows officiating. Interment
will follow at Weal Presbyterian Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Morris Gatley
DANVILLE, Va. - Morris Fredrick Gatley, 68, of 191 Rosewood Lane died Friday Dec. 8, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 29, 1932, in Potton, Quebec, Canada, he was a son of Vernon Gatley and Mabel Aiken Gatley.
He was married
to Marie Hedrick Gatley, who survives.
He was retired from the U.S. Army, where he was an instructor and served from 1956-1979, during which time he traveled to many states and foreign countries. After retiring he moved to Danville in 1982. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, El Paso, Texas.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sisters, Patricia Button Young of Irisburg, Vt. and Verna Gatley Lyons of Montreal, Quebec, Canada; two stepsisters, Jenny Button Hayes of Richford, Vt. and Dorothy Button Metson of Cowansville, Quebec, Canada.
He was predeceased by one sister, Ardis Gatley Fuller and one stepbrother, Clair Button.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Mausoleum at Danville Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. John Meadows, the Rev. Griffin Duncan and the Rev. Billy Hedrick officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Alfonso Gilbert
ARLINGTON, Va. - Alfonso D. Gilbert, 72, of 1500's Fern St. died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at Manor Care Nursing Home, Arlington.
Born April 27, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Rev. Robert G. Gilbert and Arzelia Craft Gilbert.
He was married
to Mary Smith Gilbert, who predeceased him.
He was a retired carpenter and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Prunty of Chatham; four brothers, Robert Gilbert and Ernest W. Gilbert, both of Chatham, Andrew Gilbert of Gretna and Edward Gilbert of Lynchburg and one sister, Vernell Boyd of Annandale.
A funeral will be held 12 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel, Gretna, with the Rev. Floyd Jones officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Danville.
A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at Miller Funeral Home.
Naomi Glass
HURT, Va. - Naomi Rosetta Glass, 60, of 16560 Rockford School Road died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born May 16, 1940, in Campbell County, she was a daughter of Andrew Broggin Dorothy Davis Broggin.
She was married
to Silas Glass, who survives.
Prior to her retirement on disability, she was employed as a finisher with the Lane Company, Altavista. She was a member of the Universal Prayer House of Deliverance Church, Hurt.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Veronica Robertson of Pittsville, Cynthia Glass and Laura Glass, both of Hurt; two sons, Virgil Glass of Long Island and Silas Glass II of Hurt; six sisters, Doris Brewer and Ruth Mack, both of Lynchburg, Janice Shropshire and Joyce Broggin, both of Capitol Heights, Md., Rachel Clements of Gretna and Lois Tucker of Nebo, N.C.; eight brothers, Paul Broggin of Washington, D.C., Isaiah Broggin of Madison, Thomas Broggin of Malboro, Md., James Broggin of Tacoma, Wash., David Broggin of Greenbelt, Md., Jacob Broggin and Matthew Broggin, both of Capitol Heights, Md. and Lloyd Broggin of Jessup, Md.; and five grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Victoria Glass.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Moriah Baptist Church, with the Rev. Edward L. Pope officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

Arnie Grogan Jr.
AXTON, Va. - Arnie L. Grogan Jr., 69, of 1643 Sandy River Road died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
Born Jan. 1, 1931, in Henry County, he was a son of Arnie L. Grogan Sr. and Fannie Richmond Grogan.
He was married
to Sarah Still Grogan, who survives.
He was a retired owner and operator of Grogan's Grocerie and a member of Carroll Memorial Methodist Church.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, William Lee Grogan of Conover, N.C.; three daughters, Diane Adams, Sharon Grogan and Norma Dixon, all of Axton; one brother, Ralph Grogan of Eden, N.C.; one sister, Alma Dalton of Conover, N.C.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Leonard "Buck" Grogan and Charles Grogan and two sisters, Mary Fulcher and Frances Harris.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Snider officiating. Interment
will follow at Roselawn Burial Park, with military honors provided by Martinsville Henry County Honor Guard.

Hilda Taylor
DANVILLE, Va. - Hilda Snead Taylor of Roman Eagle Nursing Home died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at her residence.
Born March 3, 1915, in Danville, she was a daughter of William A. Snead and Myrtle Nuckols Snead.
On Oct. 4, 1950, she was married
to William Mayhew Taylor, who predeceased her, Jan. 1959
She was a graduate of G.W.H.S. and Averett College. She worked at Dan River Research Division and later at Belk-Legget Department Store, downtown. She was an artist having a number of one person shows. She was a member of West Main Baptist Church, Fidelis Sunday School Class and the E.C.H.O. She was a past member of the U.D.C., the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History and Danville Art League.
Survivors include three sisters, Lilly S. Goodson, Mary S. Hardy and Dottie A. Snead, all of Danville.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Townes Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Bruce Wilson officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her sister, Dottie Snead, 231 South Ridge St. Apt. 306.
Alfonza Hodnett
CHATHAM, Va. - Alfonza Hodnett, 79, of 449 Hickory Road died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born Dec. 4, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John and Odella Hodnett.
He was married
to Sarah Smith Hodnett, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Ralph Hodnett of Maryland, and Melvin and Eric Hodnett, both of Danville; three daughters, Maybell Robinson and Diane Williams, both of Danville and Lilly P. Garland of Milton, N.C.; five stepsons, Phelarn Smith of Richmond, Harlod and Nelson Smith, both of Chatham, Napoleon Smith of Kentucky and Byrd Smith of Blairs; four stepdaughters, Dianah SmithPaulene McKenzie and Tammy Smith, all of Chatham and Brenda Henderson of Yanceyville, N.C.; four brothers, Howard Hodnett of Danville and Cecil Hodnett, Eugene Hodnett and Morris Hodnett, all of Chatham; 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cherrystone Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd O. Jones officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 2-7 p.m. Monday at the chapel of Howerton Funeral Home.
