Mary Thompson Newton
DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Thompson Newton, 92, 509 Woodlawn Drive, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a year of declining health and three days in the hospital.
Born May 21, 1910, in Reidsville, N.C., she was the daughter of Albert Mayfield Thompson and Golden Newcomb Thompson.
She had lived in Danville since 1960 and worked in the weave room at Dan River Mills. She was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church. She was the last surviving member of her generation.
She married Wellington Newton in 1936. He predeceased her on Feb. 5, 1990.
She is survived by six daughters, Loretta Howerton of Danville, Linda Love of Ridgeway, Carolyn Cadd of Pelham, N.C., Barbara Wells of Richmond, Belinda Jones and Virginia Atkinson, both of Danville; three sons, Ronnie Newton of Martinsville, Wayne Newton and Rickey Newton, both of the residence; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. A.J. Gunther officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Clifton Vernon Owen
CHATHAM, Va. - Clifton Vernon Owen, 87, of 1928 Riddle Road, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center in Danville.
Born Sept. 5, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry Wise Owen and Flossie Lee Bailey Owen.
He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church and a retired farmer. He was a World War II combat veteran and served in Italy and the Africa campaign.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Harrison Owen of the residence; three daughters, Joan O. Crews of Dry Fork, May O. Earles and Frances O. Haley, both of Chatham; three sons, Clifton E. Owen of Griffin, Ga., Steven Owen of Huddleston and Christopher Owen of Dry Fork; four sisters, Estelle Parsons, Ila Haley, both of Danville, Doris Slayton of Virginia Beach and Violet Moore of Chatham; a brother, Arthur Owen of Lynchburg; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by five brothers, Kermit Owen, Herman Owen, Elmo Owen, Sanford Owen and Zenus Owen.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Concord United Methodist Church with the Rev. Darrell Campbell officiating. Military rites will be given by American Legion Post 1097, Danville.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.

Hak Nan Pak
DANVILLE, Va. - Hak Nan Pak, 82, of 104 Bannister Court, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at her residence.
She was born April 20, 1920 in South Korea.
She was married to Sang Bum Pak, who predeceased her.
She is survived by one son, Chol Min Pak of Martinsville; six daughters, Chu Ja Kim of South Korea, Young Cha Rader of Yuma, Ariz., Bun-yi Tanksley of Danville, Mal Suk Chizek of Seattle, Wash., Po-sun Bowles of Danville and Mi Hwa Stevens of Bedford; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Townes Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will be at the daughter's residence, 104 Bannister Court.

Julius Nelson Reynolds
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Julius Nelson Reynolds, 73, of 2255 St. Charles Ave., New Orleans, Louisiana, died Dec. 10, 2002, at his residence.
Born Feb. 23, 1929, in Callands, Va., he was the son of Charlie Wade Reynolds and Annie Slaydon Reynolds.
He was married to Peggy Sasser Reynolds, who survives. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Master Sergeant after 21 years of service in Presque Isle, Maine, Japan, Biloxi, Mississippi, and Bossier City, Louisiana. He also retired from the Federal Electric Corp. and spent the remainder of his life in Florida, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans, Louisiana.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, are one brother, Kenneth Slaydon Reynolds of Danville, Va.; four sisters, Stella R. Nelson and Edith R. Bullington of Danville, Va., Anne R. Coward and Nancy R. Hundley of Callands, Va.; and eight stepchildren of various locations.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Basil I. Reynolds, A. Wilbur Reynolds; one sister Bernice R. Turlington and one stepdaughter.
His body, in accordance with his instructions, was cremated in New Orleans.
Quinton Rudolph Watlington
DANVILLE, Va. - Quinton Rudolph Watlington, 58, of 642 Arnett Blvd., Apt. 3B, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 25, 1944, in Danville, he was the son of Cora Bell Watlington.
He was married to Pearl Watlington, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by ten children.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Howard Graves, Eulogist. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Nannie Shorter 'Polly' Wells
DANVILLE, Va. - Nannie Shorter "Polly" Wells, 90, formerly of 501 Westview Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, in Riverside Health Care Center, after ten years of declining health and being in the nursing home for 20 months.
Born June 10, 1912, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of William Benjamin Shorter and Nancy Anne Fuller Shorter.
She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
Early in her life she lived in Franklin County, Va. She had been a resident of Danville since 1930. She attended Callands High School and Chatham Hall. She was retired from Anderson Manufacturing Company, where she worked for a number of years.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She married S. Thomas Wells on March 19, 1935. He predeceased her on January 9, 2002.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by four brothers, J.B. Shorter, Page Shorter, Willie Shorter and Samuel Shorter; and two sisters, Annie S. Clifton and Allie S. Rogers.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

James Sanford Adams
MOCKSVILLE, N.C. - James Sanford Adams, 82, formerly of Old Richmond Road, Danville, VA died Saturday, April 27, 2002 at Autumn Care of Mocksville. He had been in declining health for the past three years.
Mr. Adams was born August 18, 1919 in Java, Virginia a son of Walter Carsie Adams and Garnett Lester Adams Landrum. He had lived most of his life in Pittsylvania County and was a retired tobacco farmer. In November of 1999 he moved to Mocksville.
Mr. Adams was a member of the Kentuck Baptist Church and had served on the Board of Deacons. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Billy Morgan Adams.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Dodson Adams, of Mocksville; two daughters, Irene A. Stroud and her husband, Harry of Mocksville and Carolyn A. Gooch of Forest, VA; a sister, Carroll A. Collie of Ringgold, VA; two brothers, Walter C. Adams, Jr. of Halifax, VA and Carsie Lester Adams of Dearborn Heights, MI; three grandchildren, Sandra Coulson and her husband Myron of Mocksville, Caroline Gooch of Fredericksburg, VA and Henry Gooch of Morgantown, WV and one great-granddaughter, Emily Coulson.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, April 30, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Dr. A.C. Smith. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times at the residence, 221 Magnolia Avenue, Mocksville, NC 27028.

Michael Bryant
DRY FORK, Va. - Michael Foster Bryant, 52, of Dry Fork, died Friday, April 26, 2002.
Born May 5, 1949, he was the son of the late Foster Womack Bryant and the late Ruth Shipley Bryant, both of Spring Garden. He was a 1967 graduate of Chatham High School and also attended Danville Community College. A former member and elder of Spring Garden Presbyterian Church, he was a soloist in the choir and single-handedly remodeled the Fellowship Hall's basement into a useful multi-purpose area.
A dedicated employee, he worked for Disston, Inc. as a maintenance mechanic for 26 years. Loyal to the end, he locked the doors to the Danville facility upon its closing. Later, he was employed by Chatham Oil Company, and most recently by Hilltop Gardens Apartments. In addition, he willingly aided those who needed his mechanical expertise.
Giving the Gift of Life faithfully every 54 days, he proudly achieved the status of "Life Blood Donor."
Survivors include his wife, Ann Yeatts Bryant of 533 Harper Road, his sons Michael and Chris, and his daughter-in-law, Angela. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Jo Lee Moss, and his beloved canine companion, Kobe.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Danville Humane Society. Blood donations to the Danville Blood Bank are also greatly appreciated.

Randy Crenshaw
SOUTH BOSTON, Va.- Randy Thomas Crenshaw, 51, of 209 Merritt Street, died April 27, 2002 at the Medical College of Va. Hospital.
Born October 7, 1950 in Halifax County, he was a son of Herman Rodger Crenshaw, who predeceased him, and Beulah Puryear Crenshaw, who survives.
He was married to Deborah Thompson Crenshaw, who survives. He was a member and deacon of Dan River Baptist Church and was also a youth leader.
Survivors, in addition to his wife and mother, both of South Boston, include one daughter, Michelle "Nickie" Crenshaw of South Boston; two sons, Michael Wayne Crenshaw and Ryan Thomas Crenshaw, both of South Boston; one brother, Rodger Crenshaw of South Boston; and one grandchild.
He was predeceased, in addition to his father, by one brother, Robin Jay Crenshaw.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Dan River Baptist Church with the Revs. Dr. Lynn Marstin, Paul King, Melvin Bradshaw, and Mike Osbourne officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

RINGGOLD, Va. - Karen Sue Wilson Foster, 49, of 212 Mountain Hill Road, died Sunday morning, April 28, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for several months.
Born May 29, 1952 in Martinsville, Va., she was a daughter of Early Melvin Wilson, who predeceased her, and Eva Wilson Holt, who survives.
She was married on July 28, 1979 to Horace Lee Foster, who survives. She was a relief worker at Piedmont Mills, Memorial Drive Division.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence and mother, include one son, Jason Dane Farmer of Axton, Va.; one daughter, Danielle Foster of Danville, Va.; one daughter-in-law, Amy Farmer of Axton, Va.; one sister, Shirley Wilson of Collinsville, Va.; one niece, Terri Lynn Hansen of Powell, Tenn.; one stepfather, Rakin Holt of Ridgeway, Va.; and two grandchildren.

Lee Manning
DANVILLE, Va. - Lee R. Manning, of 115 Fairmont Circle, died Sunday morning, April 28, 2002, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was born on June 28, 1921, in Bethel, N.C. a son of the late Jesse L. Manning and Lydia Smith Manning.
Mr. Manning was married to the former Miss Lois Tetterton, who survives.
He was a graduate of Duke University, and was a United States Army Veteran of World War II.
Mr. Manning was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was a retired Certified Public Accountant with Manning, Perkinson and Floyd.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Vernon Manning and Charles Manning.
Mr. Manning is survived by his wife, Lois Tetterton Manning of the home; a son, William D. Manning of Ringgold, Va.; a daughter, Shirley M. Powell and her husband, J. C. of Brosville, Va.; three grandchildren, Drew Dillon of Brosville, Va., Justin Manning and Kaitlyn Manning, both of Ringgold, Va.; a brother, Carl Manning of Bethel, N.C.; three sisters, Earline Knox of Robersonville, N.C., Jessie Mae Shephard of Tallahassee, Fla. and Joyce Rouse of Bethel, N.C.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday morning, April 30, 2002 at 11:00 o'clock at Highland Burial Park with Joey Faucette officiating and Mack Stewart, soloist.

Gather Hedrick Adams
DANVILLE, Va. - Gather Hedrick Adams, 85, of Roman Eagle Memorial Home, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, after several years of declining health. She had been a resident of the home for six years.
Born Nov. 25, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Sam Hedrick and Esther Towler Hedrick.
She lived her entire life in Pittsylvania County. She was a homemaker and employed at Dan River, Inc. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was married to Jimmie D. Adams, who predeceased her on Jan. 29, 2002.
She is survived by two stepdaughters, Patricia Ferris and Linda Hairfield, both of Danville and two sisters, Dorothy Guill and Hilda Payne, both of Chatham.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Avery Hedrick.
The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with James Ayers officiating.
