Kaleb McDowell
RINGGOLD, Va. - Kaleb Thomas McDowell, 4 months, of 2995 Cedar Road died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after four months of declining health.
Born August 16, 2000, at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C., he was a son of James W. McDowell Jr. and Lisa Neighbors McDowell, who survive.
In addition to his mother and father of the residence, survivors include one brother, Tyler James McDowell of the residence; maternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Jimmy Neighbors of Providence,N.C., and paternal grandmother, Shirley D. McDowell of Milton, N.C.
He was predeceased by paternal grandfather, James W. “Jimmy” McDowell.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
The family will receive friends at the residence, in the Mountain Hill community.

Mabel Akers
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Mabel Pruitt Akers, of 210 Great Road died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville, Henry County.
Born in Grayson County, she was the daughter of Richard Reece Pruitt and Nera Johnson Pruitt.
She was married
to John Harvey Akers, who predeceased her in 1983. She was a retired maternity nurse at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church. She attended Grayson County Schools, National Business College, Pulaski, and Patrick Henry Community College.
Survivors include two daughters, Jeanie Keen of Danville and Brenda Shepherd of Fork Mountain; two sons, Gary Akers of Longs, S.C. and Gordon Akers of Rock Hill, S.C.; two sisters, Hestel Rutherford of High Point, N.C. and Ruby Lee Cruze of Los Angeles; ten grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Bessie Mae Anders and Beulah Pruitt and one brother, Wilson Pruitt.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Collins Funeral Service with the Rev. J.D. Harmon officiating. Interment
will follow at Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Collins Funeral Chapel and other times at the residence of a daughter, Brenda Shepherd, 90 Chestnut Run Lane, Fork Mountain.

Edward Brown
DANVILLE, Va. - Edward Taylor Brown, 87, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Chowan Hospital, Edenton, N.C.
Born August 22, 1913, in Ringgold, he was a son of Hendrix Brown and Eula Dyer Brown.
He was married
to Lucy Ragland Brown, who predeceased him in 1993. They were married
for 59 years.
He spent over 40 years with Dan River Mills, Robbins Mills, Celenese and United Piece Dye Workes and retired in 1977. For the past 23 years he was a well known antiques dealer specializing in early lighting, silver and textiles. He is the last survivor of the 1933 George Washington High School basketball team that won the Virginia State Championship.
Survivors include one son, Edward Taylor Brown Jr. of Hertford, N.C.; one daughter, Mary Ann Beard of Nottingham, England, and four grandchildren.
A graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Gary Mustead officiating.

Louise Blackton
VENICE, Calif. - Louise Holt Blackton, 85, of 1905 Canal St. died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at her residence.
Born Feb. 21, 1915, in South Boston, Va., she was the daughter of Starke Holt and Fannie Thompson Holt.
She was married
to Jay Blackton.
Survivors include one daughter, Jennie Lou Blackton Philpower of Venice and one brother, William Holt of Wilmington, N.C.
A graveside service will be held 4 p.m. Friday at Oak Ridge cemetery with the Rev. Doug Martin officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home.
James Browe Sr.
ROANOKE, Va. - Lt. James Donald Browe Sr., 83, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born August 28, 1917, in Detroit, he was a son of Ernest Browe and Elsie Madison Browe.
He was married
to Margaret Elizabeth Williams Browe, who predeceased him. He was a navigator in the Merchant Marines from 1939-1941 and a 2nd Lieutenant Navigator in the U.S. Navy from 1941-1946. He was an oceanographer/nautical scientist in the U.S. Navy from 1947-1978. He was a member of Bedford Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Andrew C. Browe of Indiana, Pa., Conrad M. Browe of Newport News, James D. Browe Jr. of Bedford and William M. Browe of Danville; three sisters, Marge Browe of Cornwall Manor, Pa., Shirley Martin of El Paso, Texas and Edith Randow of Salem, Ore.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, June Browe.
A funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Bedford Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. David L. Henderson and the Rev. James A. Carroll officiating. Interment
will follow at Greenwood cemetery with military graveside honors given by American Legion Post #16.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday and from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Carder-Tharp Funeral Home., Bedford.

Allen Covington
CRYSTAL HILL, Va. - Allen Smith Covington, 80, of 1140 Clays Mill Road died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 15, 1920, in Green County, he was a son of Luther J. Covington Sr. and Annie Lalra Morris Covington.
He was married
to Mary Crews Covington, who survives. He was a member of Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his wife of Crystal Hill, survivors include nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Crystall Hill Southern Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Wilbourne and the Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

Winsel Harris
DANVILLE, Va. - Winsel Keith Harris, 44, of 210 Forest Drive died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, in Halifax County.
Born Nov. 2, 1956, in Danville, he was a son of Albert Harris and Elizabeth Harris, who survive.
He was married
to Twanitta Martin Harris, who survives. He was a registered nurse at Halifax Regional Hospital.
In addition to his wife of the residence and parents of Danville, survivors include one sister, Jackie Williamson of Danville and one brother, Melveice Harris of Roslyn, Pa.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Osco Gardin officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

DANVILLE, Va. - Danielle Elizabeth Mayer, 40, of 669 Lee St. died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at her residence.
Born Oct. 14, 1960, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of Albert and Frances Jones Smith.
She was married
to Ronald Wayne Mayer, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one daughter, Aisha P. Mayer of Gellenkirchen, Germany; two sisters, Demita J. Lewis of Danville and Demiesha Smith of Philadelphia and three brothers, Albert Smith and Swayne Smith, both of Philadelphia and Deon Smith of Danville.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with Bishop F.B. Kidd officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Demita Lewis, 236 Cleveland St.

Henry Heartwell
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Henry Lightfoot Heartwell, 80, of 8212 Philpott Road died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at St. Marys Hospital.
Born Dec. 11, 1921, in Halifax County, he was a son of Herbert H. Heartwell and Cornelia Mish Heartwell.
He was married
to Jane Adams Heartwell. He was a member of the South Boston Presbyterian Church and served with the Flying Tigers during World War II. He was a state director for the South Boston Jaycees, delegate to the 1968 democratic convention in Chicago and was secretary of the Halifax County Electoral Board for 10 years. He was chairman of the Halifax County Planning Commission from 1966-1979.
Survivors include one daughter, Karen Heartwell Franz of Richmond and one grandson.
A graveside funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Crossroads Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Dan Ward officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Gary Blevins, 406 Jack Pointer Road, Semora, N.C.

Elsie Chattin Bray
DANVILLE, Va. - Elsie Chattin Bray, 89, of 155 Hartford St. died Tuesday evening December 12, 2000, at D.R.M.C.
Born August 25, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Albert Pritchett Chattin and Annie Inman Chattin, both deceased.
On September 20, 1931, she was married
to Henry Clay Bray, who predeceased her.
She made her home in Ruffin, N.C. for most of her life. For the past 10 years she had lived with her daughter, Nancy Goforth, in Danville. She was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church. She was a housewife, and mother all of her adult life.
Survivors include three sons, Carl Wayne Bray and his wife, Mildred Bray and Norman W. Bray Sr., all of Reidsville, N.C. and Henry Lee Bray of Ruffin, N.C.; four daughters, Janice B. Sharpe, Vickey B. Bray and her husband, Carroll Bray, all of Reidsville, Nancy B. Goforth and her husband, John Goforth, both of Danville and Wendy B. LaFlamme and her husband, Don LaFlamme, both of Keeling; four brothers, Willie A. Chattin of Reidsville, N.C., Robert Chattin of Danville, the Rev. Lee Chattin of Monteo and the Rev. Norman Chattin of Richmond; 22 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Paul W. Bray Sr.; two brothers, James W. Chattin and George Chattin; two sisters, Bertha C. Willis and Minnie Griffith and one grandchild.
A funeral will be held 3:00 P.M. Friday, December 15, 2000, at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ken Hall, the Rev. Robert Hardy IV and the Rev. Mike Tillman officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
