Willie Fitzgerald
DANVILLE, Va. - Willie Morris Fitzgerald, 65, of 233 Jefferson Ave. died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 21, 1935, he was a son of Henry "Fine" Fitzgerald and Suler Lovelace Fitzgerald.
He was a seasonal worker at Southbern Processors.
Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Hunter of Oxon Hill, Md. and Jean Fitzgerald of Philadelphia; two sons, Michael Bonie and John Fitzgerald, both of Philadelphia; two sisters, Erma Herndon of Chatham and Ocie Johnson of Danville; two brothers, Omie Fitzgerald of Landover, Md. and Elmos Adams of Danville and 10 grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at noon Friday at Union Street Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Harold E. Vann II officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Beavers Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence of his sister, Ocie Johnson, 221 Tyler Ave.
Thelma Johnson
DANVILLE, Va. - Thelma Swann Johnson, 86, of 457 Southland Drive died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 15, 1914, in Danville, she was a daughter of James Burgess Swann and Sue Pauline Lewis Swann.
On June 28, 1936, she was married
to Harry D. Johnson, who survives. She was retired from Dan River Inc., where she worked in the designing department. She was a member of West Main Baptist Church and the Fidelis Sunday school class. She was also a member of the Sarah Bradley Garden Club, Danville Art League, Glen Oak Country Club, Kaufman-Brydon Chapter No. 87 Order of the Eastern Star and the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Barbara J. Bostian of St. Petersburg, Fla; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one sister, Irene Swann Dunbar and two brothers, James Thomas Swann and William Jackson Swann.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at West Main Baptist Church with the Rev. Bruce Wilson officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Louise Jordan
DANVILLE, Va. - Louise Jordan, 99, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Oct. 18, 1901, in Young Harris, Ga., she was the daughter of James M. Hood and Katherine Jackson Hood.
She was married
to Joseph Otis Jordan, who predeceased her. She was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church and was employed by Dan River Mills Inc.
Survivors include one daughter, Winifred L. Jordan.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. David R. Turbyfill officiating.

Samuel Robert McCormick, Sr.
RINGGOLD, Va. - Samuel Robert McCormick, Sr., age 69, of 2032 Ringgold Church Road died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 19, 1931, he was a son of Oscar B. McCormick and Stella Evans McCormick.
Mr. McCormick was a member and former deacon of Stokesland Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of American Legion Post 325. Mr. McCormick retired from Norfolk Southern Railway in 1992 after 37 years of service. Sam was also a farmer in the Ringgold Community, an avid gardener and an extraordinary humanitarian. Mr. McCormick also graduated from Dan River High School in 1949.
He is survived by his wife Connie of the residence. In addition, survivors include two Sons and Daughter-in-laws, Samuel Robert McCormick, Jr. and Phyllis T. McCormick of Ringgold, Va. and Danny C. McCormick and Deborah J. McCormick of Danville, Va.; 4 grandchildren, Jeremy Blake McCormick and Reagan Leigh McCormick, both of Ringgold and Whitney Danielle McCormick and Haley Elizabeth McCormick, both of Danville, Va.; two sisters, Sarah M. Hardy of Ringgold and Jessie M. Lindsay of Kernersville, N.C. and 2 brothers, George McCormick of Ringgold, Va. and Tom H. McCormick of Ringgold, Va.
He was predeceased by 3 brothers, Oscar D. McCormick, Frank McCormick and Leland McCormick.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at Ringgold Baptist Church with the Reverend John Warner, The Reverend Carl Burger and The Reverend Larry Pittman officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park. Military honors will be performed by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 til 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence.

Robert Neal
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Neal, 87, of 1014 West Paxton Street died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at the Blue Ridge Rehabilitative Center, Martinsville.
Born April 14, 1913, in Whitetown, N.C., he was a son of Gene Neal and Aggie Neal.
He was married
to Mabel Smith Neal, who survives. He was employed at Durham Hosiery for many years prior to retirement.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Geraldine Pannell of Danville; three sons, Billy Smith, Theodore Neal and Sherman Neal, all of Danville and two half-sisters, Leola Dejarnette and Lula Lee, both of Danville.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Barbara Reeves.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with Bishop Major Hairston officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Ada Moran
DANVILLE, Va. - Ada Salmons Moran, 91, formerly of 412 Westview Drive died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born March 19, 1909, in Patrick County, she was the daughter of Cassell Salmons and Mary Della Hatcher Salmons.
She was married
to the Rev. Leonard C. Moran, who predeceased her Sept. 22, 1981. She had made her home in Danville since 1925. She was a homemaker and a member of Riveroak Church of God, where she was a VIP.
Survivors include five sons, Morris Moran of Ruffin, N.C., Euegene Moran, Douglas Moran and Gerald Moran, all of Danville and Billy Moran of Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters, Mallie Gibson of Roanoke and Ora Compton of Floyd; one brother, Carlis Salmons of Roanoke; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by two sons, Norman Alton Moran and Otis L. Moran and one daughter, Iris Moran.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Riveroak Church of God with the Rev. Tim Nuckles, the Rev. Tim Hill, and the Rev. Travis Gore officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the church and other times at the residence of Gerald Moran, 226 Withers Road.

Willie Slagle Jr.
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Willie Robert "Bill" Slagle Jr., 77, of 3010 Huell Matthews Hwy. died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born April 7, 1923, in Halifax County, he was a son of Willie Robert Slagle Sr. and Vera P. Slagle, who survives.
He was married
to Thelma Murray Slagle, who predeceased him. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of Union United Church of Christ. He began Slagle Excavating 50 years ago.
In addition to his mother of South Boston, survivors include two sons, Willie R. "Billy" Slagle III of Cluster Springs and Roger W. Slagle Sr. of South Boston; one brother, Jack Slagle of South Boston and one sister, Esther S. Fulghum of Greenville, N.C.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one son, Emmett Peyton Slagle.
A graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Virgilina cemetery with the Rev. Buddy Hall officiating.

Otis Smith
DANVILLE, Va. - Otis Smith, 75, of 216 Bennett St. died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 21, 1925, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was a son of Rufus Joel Smith and Luola Knight Smith.
On Dec. 10, 1949, he was married
to Cassie Worley Smith, who survives. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Dan River Retirees Club.
He retired from Dan River Inc. as a loom fixer after 43 years of service.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Vicky S. Atkinson and Brenda B. Gammon, both of Danville; one sister, Rumell S. Goodson of Danville; three brothers, Paul Smith and Frank Smith, both of Danville and Rufe Smith of Greensboro, N.C.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one sister, Josephine S. Bumpass and four brothers, James Smith, Marvin Smith, Oscar Smith and T.C. Smith.

Bessie Waddill
AXTON, Va. - Bessie Waddill, 91, of 16069 Martinsville Hwy., died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 22, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Mark Averett and Martha Averett.
She was married
to Lewis Waddill, who predeceased her.
She was the last survivor of her immediate family.
Survivors include numerous grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at East New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Marcellus Mack officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Earl Waldren
- Earl Maxwell Waldren, 45, of 1131 Hinton St., died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Southside Regional Hospital.
Born Jan. 7, 1955, in Danville, he was a son of Lucy Waldren Curtis, who survives.
In addition his mother of Maryland, survivors include one son, Kirby Richmond of Danville; three sisters, Elaine Gaither, Arlene Bush and Pamela Stanley, all of Maryland, and five brothers, Stanley Curtis, Michael Curtis and Ronald Curtis, all of Maryland, and Jerome Waldren and Nathan Waldren, both of Danville.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
A viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence of Sara Hunt, 1201 Washington St.
