Mabel Shelton
DANVILLE, Va. - Mabel Vernon Shelton, 91, of 4217 Mt. View Road died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at her residence.
Born July 6, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Arthur Vernon and Sallie Frances Vernon.
She was married
to William Walter Shelton, who predeceased her. She was a sitter with Danville Sitting Service before retirement and was a member of Blairs Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Hildred C. Shelton of Danville and one sister, Mrs. Joe Motley of Chatham.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jon Reed and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Richard Lee Spicer
CALLANDS, Va. - Mr. Richard Lee Spicer, 73, husband of Vivian Lee Spivey Spicer, died Thursday, December 14, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville. Mr. Spicer was born on October 3, 1927 in Redding, CA. He served in the US Army for 26 years and served in the Korean Conflict War. Mr. Spicer worked as a Plant Manager for Bassett-Walleer for 18 years. He was a Past Commander of the American Legion Post #325 and also an Honor Guard. He was also one of the founding members of the Callands Volunteer Fire Dept. Loving survivors other than his wife are, two daughters: Crystal Dojoak of Colorado Springs, CA and Vicki Coffin of Hillsboro, NH; one son, Jeffrey Spicer of Eden, N.C.; a brother, Arthur Spicer of Redding, CA and sister, Dorothy Guinther of Colfax, CA; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held. Arrangements are by Cremation Society of Virginia. Let them know you're thinking about them.

Madeline Adkins
CALLANDS, Va. - Madeline Adkins Adkins, 89, of 2653 Sailors Creek Road died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at her residence.
Born July 4, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Thomas Adkins and Fannie Adkins Adkins.
She was married
to Roosevelt Adkins, who predeceased her. She was a member of Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Emma Jean Adkins Walker of Callands; one son, Hugh White Adkins of Callands; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren, one step grandchild and five step great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sons, John Calvin Adkins and Earl Willard Adkins; two sisters and one brother, Louise A. Lawrence, Estelle A. Rigney and Harry Greenwood Adkins.
A graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Adkins Family cemetery with the Rev. Russell East officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Monday at Scott Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Louise Brown
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Louise Petty Brown, 74, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born Feb. 12, 1926, in Halifax County.
Survivors include two daughters, Delores Jefferson of Middletown, N.Y. and Pat Sconiors of East Orange, N.J.; four sons, Malcomb Brown of South Boston, Fred Brown of Silver Spring, Md., Anthony Brown of Halifax and Kenny Brown of Middletown, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at County Line Baptist Church, Vernon Hill, with the Rev. Otis Dillard officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held one hour prior to service.
The famiy will receive friends at the residence, 1147 Siani Road, South Boston.

Gwendolyn Cox
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Gwendolyn Trueheart Cox, 80, formerly of Altavista, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Westminster Canterbury, Lynchburg.
Born April 7, 1920, in Brandon, she was a daughter of Harry Parker Trueheart and Gwendolyn Geyer Trueheart.
She was married
to Stuart Thomas Cox, who predeceased her.
She was a graduate of Madison College, now known as James Madison University, and was actively involved in community activities, while in Altavista. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and was a former member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
Survivors include three sons, Stuart Cox Jr. of Little Silver, N.J., Ross Cox of Greensboro, N.C. and Don Cox of Danville; two brothers, Harry Trueheart of Palm City, Fla. and Bill Trueheart of Conway, S.C.; one sister, Betty Livingston of Oceanside, Calif. and seven grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one brother, Bud Trueheart.
Interment will be held 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at Green Hill cemetery. A memorial service will follow 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Frank Dunn officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Finch and Finch Funeral Home, Altavista.
Callie Cross
DANVILLE, Va. - Callie "Polly" Cross, 91, formerly of 125 Sunset Drive died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 29, 1909, in Cascade, she was the daughter of Benjamin cross and Mary Belle Payne Cross.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she was self-employed seamstress. She was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Jack Robertson officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a niece, Shirley Moore, 10678 N.C. 700, Pelham, N.C.

Adell Crowder
DANVILLE, Va. - Adell Rebecca Crowder, 57, of 300 Meadows Farm Road died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at her residence.
Born Feb. 21m 1943, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George T. Crowder and Elizabeth McDaniel Crowder.
She was a member of the Tabernacle.
Survivors include one son, Gary Dean Hogan of Gretna; one brother, Jesse Crowder of Danville; four sisters, Viola Bryant of Ringgold, Verna McDaniel of Pelham, N.C. and Ethel Eanes and Isma Crowder, both of Danville, and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Earl W. Crowder and Dennis M. Crowder and one sister, Beatrice C. Kirks.
A graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Cleo Hunley officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Verna McDaniel, 98 Newman Road, Pelham, N.C.

Virginia Crowder
DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia King Crowder, age 76, of 125 Arnett Blvd., Apt. C 3, died Sunday afternoon December 17, 2000 at Riverside Health Care Center after two years of declining health.
She was born in Pittsylvania County on June 19, 1924, a daughter of the late Guy E. King and Agatha Bonham King.
She had spent most of her life in Danville where she was a graduate of Danville Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. She was a registered nurse and worked in various places including Danville, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Newbern, North Carolina. She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church where she was an active member of the W.M.U., and a co-teacher of the Jay Class. She also enjoyed the activities of the Prime timers.
Survivors include one stepdaughter: Nancy C. Gentry of Danville, and eight nieces: Patricia K. Martin and Peggy K. Haley both of Danville, and Roberta K. McGuire of Salem, and Dorothy K. Dix of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Laura K. Myse of Falmouth, and Martha K. Martin of Roswell, Georgia, and Joanne K. Lockridge and Patsy K. Bryan both of Atlanta, Georgia, and four nephews: Joseph A. King of Waynesboro, Matthew B. King of Fredericksburg, and Jon W. King of Richmond, and Larry Calhoun of Atlanta, Georgia, and she is also survived by a good friend Pat C. Ware of Danville.
She was predeceased by a stepson, Lee Crowder, and five brothers, Joseph King, John King, Ansel King, Wayne King, and Rudolph King, and also predeceased by a nephew, Robert J. King.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lee Ellison. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7:00 - 8:00 P.M., and at other times at the residence of her stepdaughter Nancy Gentry at 118 Skylark Court.
Shirley Elliott
HAMPTON, Va. - Shirley Arnold Elliott, 65, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000.
Born March 14, 1935, in Schoolfield, she was a daughter of Nile Newton Arnold and Esther Dickens Arnold.
She was married
to John B. Elliott, who survives.
She had been a resident of the Peninsula since 1954. She retired from the Newport News School System as a teacher’s aid, after 19 years of service. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Newport News, where she had served on the Communion Committee.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, John B. Elliott Jr. of Chesapeake and James W. Elliott of Madison, Miss.; three sisters, Helen Anderson of Florence, Mont., Jackie Suit and Betty Jones of Danville; one brother, Wesley Arnold of Huntersville, N.C. and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one sister, Madeline Cora Arnold.
A funeral was held Saturday at First Baptist Church, Newport News. Interment
followed at Peninsula Memorial Park.
Ellie Gammon
DANVILLE, Va. - Ellie Weatherford Yeatts Gammon, 65, of 2860 Moorefield Bridge Road, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at her residence.
Born Oct. 11, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Archie Weatherford and Ruth Roach Weatherford, who survives.
She was first married
to William E. Yeatts Sr., who predeceased her, June 4, 1973 and was later married
to Ronald L. Gammon, who survives.
She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and prior to retirement worked for Barbee Fabrics.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her mother of Halifax, survivors include one daughter, Patricia Yeatts of Danville; one son, William E. Yeatts Jr. of Statesville, N.C.; six sisters, Kay Burton and Verona Allen, both of Halifax, Shelby Hardy of Keeling, Carolyn Doss and Charlene Bennett, both of Altavista and Delma Redd of Chatham; four brothers, Larry Weatherford, Tony Weatherford, Franklin Weatherford and Langston Weatherford, all of Danville and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Episcopal Church, with Father Cleon Ross officiating. Interment
will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:30-9 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
