Archie Lee
ALTON, Va. - Archie Lee, 83, of 410 Pointer Road died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital, South Boston.
Born Jan. 17, 1917, in Halifax County, he was a son of Archie Lee and Nannie Lee.
He was married
to Juanita Lee, who survives.
He attended Halifax County Public Schools and was a member of Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include six daughters, Viola Elmore of Ringgold, Ann Stephen of Blanch, N.C., Patsy Jones, Lady Lee, Julia Lee and Jaqueline Lee, all of Milton, N.C.; two sons, Phillip Lee of the residence and Ricky Lee of Blanch, N.C.; one sister, Martha Farmer of Alton; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. H.R. Surgeon officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held 12-8 p.m. Wednesday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel, Semora, N.C.
Barry Leftwich
DANVILLE, Va. - Barry Ray Leftwich, 26, of 614 Mt. Cross Road died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 19, 1974, in Danville, he was a son of Ronald Leftwich and Ella Jones Leftwich, who survive.
He was employed by Debbie’s Temp Service.
In addition to his parents of Danville, survivors include one son, Tyre Goggins of Danville; one daughter, Tyra Goggins of Danville; two brothers, Liony Leftwich and Corey Leftwich, both of Danville and three sisters, Wendy Leftwich and Lesly Leftwich, both of Danville and Holly Thomas of W. Palm Beach, Fla.
A funeral will be held at noon Thursday at Cunningham and Hughes Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Booker George officiating.
Interment will be at Silver Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
A viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence.
Ruby Henderson
DANVILLE, Va. - Ruby Henderson, 79, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born July 26, 1921, in Danville, she was a daughter of Nick Ozment and Mary Mitchell Ozment.
She was employed at Dan River Inc. as an inspector until her retirement.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Gene Henderson of Danville and David Henderson of Meeker, Colo.; one daughter, Helen Jones of Wake Forest, N.C.; two sisters, Mae Ringler of Hermitage, Tenn. and Connie Tesar of Springville, Mo.; one brother, Tom Ozment of Jacksonville, Fla.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Mountain View cemetery with Captain and Mrs. Dieter Zimmerer officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a son, 96 Stokesland Ave.

Thelma Hundley
DANVILLE, Va. - Thelma Walker Hundley, 89, formerly of 167 Riverview Drive died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Riverside Health Care Center after six years of declining health. She had been a resident of the nursing home for seven months.
Born Feb. 8, 1911, in Danville, she was a daughter of Thomas Webb Walker and Ethel Turner Walker.
She was married
to Claude H. Hundley, who predeceased her in 1977. She spent most of her life in Danville where she worked for Danville Knitting Mills for 20 years before retiring at the age of 62. She was a member of College Park Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy H. Harville and Marion H. Young, both of Danville; one sister, Mary W. Cousins of Danville; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters and four brothers.
A graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Jim Hewitt officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Peggy Harville, 578 Arlington Road.

Carter Jennings
NATHALIE, Va. - Carter G. Jennings, 83, died Dec. 20, 2000, at his residence.
Born Nov. 26, 1917, in Halifax County, he was a son of Robert L. "Bob" Jennings Sr. and Florence Crews Jennings.
He was married
to Margaret McDowell Jennings. He was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon and Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include two daughters, Sarah Jo Phillips of Norcross, Ga. and Ann Bates of Gretna and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Mulberry Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jerry Jordan officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home.
Memorials may be given to Mulberry Baptist Church or the American Heart Association.
James McDuffie
DANVILLE, Va. - James McDuffie, 78, of 642 Arnett Blvd., Apt. 2-A died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 7, 1923, in Lumberton, N.C., he was a son of George and Priscilla McDuffie.
He was married
to Annie Lee McDuffie, who survives. Before moving to Danville, he was a supervisor at Bellvue Hospital, New York, for 35 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Rachel Stafford of Jersey City, N.J. and Hattie Jenkins of Patterson, N.J. and two sisters, Mary Brown and Flora Shipman, both of Rahway, N.J.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Ronnie Walters will preside and Elder James Wright will officiate. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Fannie Owen
HALIFAX, Va. - Fannie Gertrude Owen, 80, of 2180 L.P. Bailey Memorial Hwy died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro, N.C.
Born Oct. 7, 1920, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Hatcher Bailey Owen and Serena Hughes Owen.
She was a member of the Beth Car Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Bessie O. Simmons of Greensboro, N.C. and Julia O. Jones of Halifax and two brothers, Jesse E. Owen of Emporia and James N. Owen of Salem.
A graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Charles Stewart officiating.

Robert Ranson
RICHMOND, Va. - Robert Graham Ranson, 86, formerly of 355 Surry Lane, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Lakewood Manor.
Born May 16, 1914, in Buckingham County, he was a son of William Malcolm Ranson and Evalina Grace Binford Ranson.
He was first married
to Hazel Berkeley on July 1, 1939 and was later married
to Anne S. LaClair, who predeceased him in 1973. On Jan. 1, 1979, he was married
to Ruby C. Woodall, who predeceased him in 1998.
He graduated from Curdsville High School and attended The College of William and Mary. He graduated from J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College with an associate's degree in law enforcement. He served with the 2nd Marine Division in the invasion of Tarawa and Saipan and the 5th Marine Division in the invasion of Iwo Jima. He served with the Selective Service Headquarters Staff from 1947-1976, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Danville, Buckingham Lodge #242, Fitzgerald Lodge # 299, Scottish Rites Bodies and the Richmond Barbershop Chorus.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy Ranson Post of Altadena, Calif.; three stepsons, Larry C. LaClair, Gary J. LaClair and Richard L. LaClair, all of Richmond and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Thursday at Lakewood Manor, 1900 Lauderdale Drive, Richmond.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. William Van Loan officiating. Interment
will follow at Mt. View cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home.
Janet Rice
VIRGILINA, Va. - Janet Bigger Rice, 56, of 5221 Red Bank Road died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Oct. 18, 1944, in Granville County, N.C., she was the daughter of Alfred Bigger and Elouise Morris Bigger.
She was married
to David Thomas Rice, who survives. She was a beautician and member of Union United Church of Christ.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Lisa Munn of Clayton, N.C., Lynn Burnette of Oxford, N.C. and Brenda R. Talley of Virgilina; one son, David Leonard Rice of South Boston, and five grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Bonnie Rice.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Union United Church of Christ with the Rev. Mike Wilburn and Norman Talley officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at Union United Church of Christ and other times at the residence.

Ida Rich
DANVILLE, Va. - Ida Lester Rich, 88, of 54 Selma Ave. died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where she had been a patient for eight weeks.
Born Oct. 9, 1912, in Saxes, she was a daughter of Willie Fountain Lester and Lelia Dickerson Lester Duffy.
On Nov. 21, 1931, she was married
to William Marvin Rich, who predeceased her, Nov. 21, 1958.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where prior to retirement she was employed at Dan River, Inc.
She was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Benny Carl Rich and Terry A. Rich, both of Danville; two sisters, Willie Lester Motley and Lessie F. Roach, both of Danville; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her stepfather, Charlie H. Duffy; one brother, Carroll G. Duffy and two sisters, Irene D. Casey and Bertha Parrish.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. David Turbyfill and the Rev. J. Richard Markham officiating. Interment
will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.
