Mattie Watkins Shaw
DANVILLE, Va. - Mattie W. Shaw, 91, formerly of 500 Randolph Street, Danville, died Monday, December 18, 2000 at Riverside Health Care Center.
She was born August 9, 1909 in Danville, a daughter of the late Warner Edward Watkins and the late Dora Carter Watkins. She was married
to Sam Shaw, who predeceased her. She received her education at the Industrial High School in Danville, which was later known as the Presbyterian High School and she attended Shaw University. Mrs. Shaw was a member of Loyal Baptist Church.
She is survived by an adopted daughter, Pam Shaw, of Norfolk, VA, two sisters-in-law, Mae Peatross Watkins and Virginia Finley Watkins, both of Danville, one niece, Wanda Watkins McDowell and her husband, George McDowell, one nephew, Waverly E. Watkins, Jr. and his wife, Kimberly C. Watkins, two great-nephews, Waverly E. Watkins, III and Warner Edward Watkins, II. She was predeceased by a son, Samuel Shaw, Jr., three brothers, Pemberton, Benjamin and Waverly Watkins and one sister, Eileen Watkins.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie W. Shaw will be conducted on Thursday, December 21, 2000 at 11:00 AM from the Chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. Lovell Maxwell officiating. Interment
will follow in Oak Hill cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Sallie Riddle
CHATHAM, Va. - Sallie Hayden Riddle, 91, formerly of Rt. 29 North died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after six months of declining health. She had been a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home for six months.
Born August 10, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Pegram Hayden and Mollie Scruggs Hayden.
She was married
to Lewis Frazier Riddle, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Oak Grove Christian Church.
She spent her life in Pittsylvania County as a homemaker, beautician, nurse and nutritionist.
She earned her licensed practical nurse training at Danville Memorial Hospital where she worked for several years and was later employed at Martinsville Memorial Hospital. Prior to retirement, she was employed by the Pittsylvania County Health Department.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth R. Westbrook of Roanoke and Evelyn R. Cirillo of San Diego, Calif.; one son, William Maynard Riddle of Chatham; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Scott Funeral home Chaple with Frank B. Fuller, Minister, officiating. Interment
will follow at the Payneton United Methodist Church cemetery, Whittles.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home.

Pauline Shelton
DANVILLE, Va. - Pauline Saunders Shelton, 84, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three years of declining health. She had been a resident of Riverside Health Care Center for several years.
She was born Nov. 2, 1916, in Pittsylvania County.
She was married
to R.L. "Jack" Shelton Sr., who predeceased her Oct. 14, 1989. She lived her life in Keeling where she was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Robert Leslie Shelton Jr. of Harvard, Mass. and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Tom Erwin officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Elnora Williamson
DANVILLE, Va. - Elnora Williamson, 81, of 148 Martha Street died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 22, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Joe and Martha Belle Watkins Williamson.
Survivors include three daughters, Isabelle Williamson and Phyllis Warner, both of Danville and Violet Warner of U.S. Navy, stationed aboard the U.S.S. Seattle, and one sister, Mary Warner of Danville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Shady Grove Baptist Church, Pelham, N.C., with the Rev. Haywood T. Gray officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Joseph Wilmouth
SCOTTSBURG, Va. - Joseph Wesley "Peter" Wilmouth, 71, of 5011 Green Level Road died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at his residence.
Born August 16, 1929, in Halifax County, he was a son of Arthur Wilmouth and Daisy King Wilmouth.
He was married
to Goldie W. Wilmouth, who survives. He attended Fork Baptist Church and was a retired farmer.
In addition to his wife of Scottsburg, survivors include two brothers, Calvin Wilmouth of Alton and Hodges Wilmouth of South Boston.
He was predeceased by six brothers and two sisters.
A graveside funeral will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at Oakland cemetery with the Rev. Robert A. Richards officiating.

Jimmie Wilson
DANVILLE, Va. - Jimmie Wilson, 85, of 1118 Washington St. died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at the residence of his daughter, 96 Stephens Road, Providence, N.C., after ten years of declining health.
Born Dec. 25, 1914, in Danville, he was a son of John Wilson and Lula Wilson Wilson.
He was married
to Mary Arthur Wilson, who predeceased him, Aug. 1990.
He lived his entire life in the Danville area, where he was employed with Dan River, Inc. as a fixer and retired after over 40 years of service. He was a member of the Tabernacle.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Aherron of Providence, N.C.; two sons, Anthony Wilson and James Wilson, both of Danville; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one brother.

Joe Womack
SMITHFIELD, Va. - Joe Sunny Womack, 62, of 909 Magruder Road died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at his residence.
Born Nov. 30, 1938, in Halifax County, he was a son of Louie Phillip Bailey Womack and Josephine C. Sadler, who survives.
He was employed as an attendant at the Isle of Wright County Landfill.
In addition to his mother of South Boston, survivors include two brothers, William Womack of Hopewell and Charlie Womack of Vancouver, Wash.; two sisters, Betty Redd and Liz Williams, both of South Boston.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Howard Womack and Harry Womack.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Tony Brooks officiating.
Interment will be at Clover cemetery on Mt. Laurel Road, Clover.

Flora Brooks
DANVILLE, Va. - Flora Williams Brooks, 95, of 404 Airport Drive died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born May 16, 1905, in Graham County, N.C., she was the daughter of James Maren Williams and Polly Nelms Williams.
She was married
to Dillard Hamilton Brooks, who predeceased her. She had lived in Danville since 1934 where she worked for Dan River Inc. for 28 years before retiring in 1962. She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Survivors include two daughters, Thelma B. Ervin of Sutherlin and Lenora B. Haynes of Danville; one sister, Rilla W. Carpenter of Roman Eagle Memorial Home; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Ruth Williams, four brothers, Sherman, Ed, Winfred and Gordon Williams, and two sisters, Addie Williams and Minnie Farley.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Garland Walker officiating. Interment
will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.

Lewis Echols
DANVILLE, Va. - Lewiis Stanford Echols, 64, of 229 Aylvan Road died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at his residence.
Born April 26, 1936, in Dry Fork, he was a son of Douglas and Mary Carter Echols.
He was married
to Barbara Echols, who survives. He was a press operator with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Brenda Faye Echols, Linda Carol Hailstock and Teresa Diane Hairston, all of Danville; two sons, Lewis Stanford Echols Jr. of Danville and the Rev. O'Brien Echols of Owens, Md.; three sisters, Hortense Carter of Dry Fork, Lena Jones of Chatham and Beryl Mae Osborne of Chester, Penn.; three brothers, Norvil Echols of Callands, Noble Maynard Echols of Danville and Joe Echols of Dry Fork; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Apostolic Church, 226 New Street, with Bishop Major Hairston officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Alfred Emerson Sr.
DRY FORK, Va. - Alfred C. Emerson Sr., 82, of 620 Dry Fork Road died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born March 21, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George H. and Minnie M. Emerson.
On Jan. 8, 1947, he married
Mildred I. Chapman, who survives.
He worked for the U.S. Postal Service from 1949 until retirement in 1977. He served as Postmaster of the Dry Fork Post Office from 1951 until retirement. During World War II, he was a member of Company F 116th Infantry Regiment 29th Infantry Division which landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He was discharged in 1948 as a Master Sergeant. He was awarded the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts and the Normandy Freedom Medal.
He was active in civic and fraternal organizations including American Legion Post #8, VFW Ballard Pruitt Post 647, DAV Archer T. Gammon Chapter 19, treasurer of Carter Masonic Lodge #323, A.F. & A.M., Morgan Johnson Chapter #44 Order of the Eastern Star, Danville Scottish Bodies and the Chatham Sertoma Club. He was service officer of the DAV for veterans of the Pittsylvania County area and was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Beverly E. Sims of Virginia Beach; three sons, Ronald E. Emerson of Ringgold, David E. Emerson of Chatham and Alfred C. Emerson Jr. of Meadows of Dan; three sisters, Annie E. Snead of Danville, Margaret E. Crews of Chatham and Mary L. Emerson of Dry Fork; one brother, H. Douglas Emerson of Danville; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Eddie L. Emerson, C.G. "Budge" Emerson, Dale Emerson and Randy Emerson.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Lewis and the Rev. Fletcher Hardy III officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with Masonic rites and military honors performed by Danville American Legion Post #1097 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Oakland United Methodist Church and other times at the residence.
