Charles Arnold
DANVILLE, Va. - Charles Percy Thomas Arnold, 34, of 624 Randolph St. died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000.
Born July 9, 1966, in Halifax County, he was a son of Rev. James Arnold and Louise Arnold, who survive.
In addition to his parents, survivors include, eight sisters, Cynthia Jones and Eunice Pinson, both of Danville, Ethel Arnold of River Rock, Ariz., Gloria Arnold of Oceanside, Calif., Laverne Mason of Baton Rouge, La., Erma Arnold of Richmond, Melba Buster of Hopewell and Annie Mitchell of Yanceyville, N.C.; six brothers, Eric Arnold of Chesapeake, Va., Staff Sgt. Alexander Arnold of Okinawa, Japan, Staff Sgt. David Arnold of Camp Pendleton, Calif., Marcellus Arnold of Upper Marlboro, Md., Christopher Arnold of Halifax and William Arnold of San Diego, Calif.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel Inc., with the Rev. Jerome B. Morris Sr. officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home of his parents, 624 Randolph St., Danville.
Leora Grogan Brown
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Leora Grogan Brown, age 89, formerly a Danville resident, died, Friday afternoon, December 22, 2000 at Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg, VA.
Born May 8, 1911 in Pittsylvania County, VA, she was the daughter of L.J. Grogan and Ruby H. Grogan.
She graduated from Whitmell Farm School in 1928 and from the Danville School of Commerce.
On August 18, 1934 she was married
to Edgar W. Brown, who survives. They lived in Danville all their lives until 1998 when they moved to Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg.
Mrs. Brown was a member of First Baptist Church where she was active in the Sunday School, WMU, and had served as a Deaconess. She was a charter member and former president of the Beverstone Garden Club and the Danville Homemaker’s Club. She was also a member of the Wednesday Club and the Historical Society.
She was predeceased by a sister, Elsie G. Robertson and a brother, Landon K. Grogan.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Sylvia and Dick Pond of Suffolk and Judy and Fred Smith of Lynchburg, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Thelma K. Grogan of Oakton.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 26, 2000 at 2:00 pm from First Baptist Church with Dr. Joey Faucette officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 - 2:00 pm prior to the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to First Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.

“Caroline” Dalton
GRETNA, Va. - “Caroline” D. Dalton, 78, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 19, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Lillard Jehue Dalton Sr. and Cordie Stephens Dalton.
She was married
to Odie B. Dalton, who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include four sons, Ryland Dalton of Lexington, Russell Lee Dalton and L. Ray “Tinny” Dalton, both of Gretna and Michael W. Dalton of Danville; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Stuart Dalton and four brothers, Grady Dalton Sr., Lillard Dalton Jr., Moncie Dalton and “S.D.” Dalton.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Colbert-Moran Chapel, with Elder Marvin Brumfield and Elder Raymond Goad officiating. Interment
will follow at the Russ Dalton Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, Russell Lee Dalton, 3297 Pittsville Road, Gretna.
Carrie Norris
DANVILLE, Va. - Carrie Spearman Norris, 77, of 204 Girard St. died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Stratford Health Care Center, after one year of declining health.
Born Feb. 2, 1923, in Danville, she was a daughter of Bright Anderson Spearman and Niva Jeanette Whitt Spearman.
On Aug. 16, 1941, she was married
to John Robert Norris, who predeceased her, Aug. 10, 1977.
She lived her entire life in the Danville area, where prior to her retirement she was employed with Dan River Inc. as a secretary in the printing department. She was a member of the Tabernacle.
Survivors include two daughters, Cathy Norris Holley of Danville and Judith Norris Crumpton of Blanche, N.C.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Judith N. Crumpton, 5306 Hwy. 62 North, Blanche, N.C.

Judy Shumate
DANVILLE, Va. - Judy Dance Parrish Shumate, 46, of 129 Clifton St. died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at her residence, after four years of declining health.
Born Dec. 20, 1954, in Danville, she was a daughter of Edgar W. Dance and Mary Lucy Hyler Dance, who survives.
She was first married
to Thomas Allen Parrish III., who predeceased her and in 1986 was married
to Glenn Odell Shumate Jr., who survives.
She lived her life in the Danville area, where prior to her decline in health she was employed with Health Tex in the Quality Control Department. She was a member of Vandola Baptist Church, where she served as a choir member and was a B.W.G. Circle member.
In addition to her husband and mother, both of the residence, survivors include one son, Thomas Allen Parrish IV. of Pelham, N.C.; one daughter, Sundi Lynn Parrish of the residence and one grandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, with the Rev. Rick Lancaster, the Rev. Bill Soyars and the Rev. Mike Wiles officiating. Interment
will follow at the Moss Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Vandola Baptist Church Youth Group, 1950 Vandola Baptist Church Road or to the Danville Cancer Society 1225 West Main St.
Henry C. Simpson
DANVILLE, Va. - Henry C. Simpson, 66 of 3506 Highway 29 North, Danville died Saturday, December 23, 2000 at Duke University Medical Center.
Mr. Simpson was born on April 9, 1934 in Union County, N.C. the son of Lillian Carter Simpson and James C. Simpson, Sr.
He was married
on August 15, 1955 to Joyce Kendrick Simpson who survives at the residence.
Mr. Simson was a veteran of the United Stattes Army. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 325. Mr. Simpson worked for Dan River Mills for forty years and retired in 1997 as supervisor of the number 5 finishing room. He was a member of Highland Baptist Church.
Besides his wife of the residence he is survived by one daughter, Patricia Simpson Anderson of Southern Pines, N.C.; one son, Henry Charles Simpson II of Danville; one brother James Carl Simpson, Jr. of Indian Trail, N.C.; two sisters, Helen Simpson of Charlotte, N.C. and Marjorie Simpson Milligan of Hollywood, Al; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Nora Anderson of Wake Forest, N.C. and Jon Erik Anderson of Southern Pines, N.C.

Maebell Tucker
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Maebell Hairston Tucker, 66, of 131 Beaver St. died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C.
Born July 13, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Peter Willie Hairston and Indiana Muse Hairston.
She was married
to Connie Tucker Sr., who survives.
She was a retired employee of Bassett Furniture and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Connie Tucker Jr. of Eden, N.C. and George Manuel Tucker of Danville; four sisters, Margaret Thomas and Mary Price, both of Danville, Anna Fountain of Axton and Ruby Hampton of Cascade; two brothers, Jack Hairston of Danville and Robert James Hairston of Cascade; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hairston Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Tinsley officiating. Interment
will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens.

Margaret Weringo
DANVILLE, Va. - Margaret Marshall Weringo, 73, of 520 Church Ave. died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at her residence after six years of declining health.
Born Aug. 11, 1927, in Pittsburg, Pa., she was a daughter of Courtney Lyle Marshall and Mary Wood Marshall.
On April 8, 1949, she was married
to Leroy Wilson Weringo, who predeceased her, April 14, 1999.
She lived most of her life in the Danville area, where she was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was involved with the Women’s Circle of the Church, as long as her health permitted. She was a member of the Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council for 35 years. She was a homemaker and director of Camp Shawnee Girl Scout Camp. She was a longtime secretary for Dr. M.H. McClintock and had worked for the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include three sons, Richard Wayne Weringo of Hope Mills, N.C., Robert Leroy Weringo of Lynchburg and James Randolph Weringo of Danville; two daughters, Marjorie Weringo Megginson of Keeling and Mary Elizabeth Weringo Thomas of Shelbyville, Ky.; one brother, Robert Marshall of Richmond; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Jack Heinsohn officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence.
Alvin Cunningham
ALTON, Va. - Alvin Quinton Cunningham, 77, of 3146 Piney Grove Road died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born March 5, 1923, in Halifax County, he was a son of Arthur Jackson Cunningham and Lewella Medley Cunningham.
He was married
to Catherine Fergus Cunningham, who survives. He was a member of Cross Road Baptist Church and was a former employee of the YMCA.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one sister, Hattie C. Spencer of New York.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cross Road Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Jones officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
