James 'Jim' Edward DeGeorgis
DRY FORK, Va. - James "Jim" Edward DeGeorgis, 51, of 1296 Sportsman Road, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born April 6, 1951, in Charleston, S.C., he was the son of Donald DeGeorgis and Barbara DeGeorgis.
He was a retired mortgage broker in Greenville, S.C. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the Vietnam War. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church and was active in woodworking and the restoration of classic cars.
In addition to his parents, both of Phenix, he is survived by his wife, Jacqueline W. DeGeorgis of the residence; a daughter, Danielle DeGeorgis of Easley, S.C.; two sons, Brian DeGeorgis of Greenville, S.C. and Daniel DeGeorgis of Easley, S.C.; a stepson, Randy Earl Gatewood of the residence; a sister, Tammie Tharp of Farmville; two brothers, Donald DeGeorgis of Halifax and Michael DeGeorgis of Greenville, S.C. and one grandchild.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Fairview United Methodist Church, Danville, with the Rev. Thomas R. Barnard officiating. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. in Highland Burial Park, Danville.
The family will receive friends at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Fairview United Methodist Church and at other times at the residence.

Sarah Catherine Clutter Fitzpatrick
DANVILLE, Va. - Sarah Catherine Clutter Fitzpatrick, formerly of Danville, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Frederick Villa Nursing Home in Catonsville, Md.
Born June 24, 1916, in Danville, she was the daughter of Eugene Clutter and Bertha Clutter.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.
She was married to Leo F. Fitzpatrick, who predeceased her on March 12, 1992.
She is survived by a son, Michael Douglas Fitzpatrick of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Gladys James of Danville and Meryle Simmons of Greensboro, N.C. and four grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Veronica Lee Brady.
The graveside funeral will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Mountain View Cemetery with Father Charles L. Breindel officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home.

Rev. Dr. Woodrow A. Giles
DANVILLE, Va. - The Rev. Dr. Woodrow A. Giles, of 148 Dublin Court, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 18, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Mumford Bland Giles and Nettie Adams Giles.
He was a graduate of La Crosse High School in 1931. He joined the Methodist Church at the age of 15. He was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service from 1935. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945 during World War II. After the service, he returned to Danville and worked at the Danville Post Office.
In 1952, at the age of 40, he answered a call to the ministry. He left his job at the post office and enrolled in Averett College where he received his Junior College Literacy Diploma in 1954. He went on to receive a B.A. from Lynchburg College. He graduated Cum Laude and was a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. He then received his Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Divinity from Duke University. He earned a Doctorate of Divinity in 1977 from Berean Graduate School of Divinity.
During over four decades as a Methodist minister, he served many churches, including Park Place in Norfolk, and in this area, Piney Forest (now St. Luke's) Stokesland, Harmony and Cascade. For eight years, he served Moseley Memorial Methodist Church where he was named Pastor Emeritus.
He attended Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
He was also a thirty-second degree Mason in the Danville Virginia Scottish Rite Body. He served seven years on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross in Danville.
He was predeceased by his wife, Leola Johnson Giles, on Sept. 1, 1997.
He is survived by a brother, Oscar Champ Giles of Ringgold.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Milstead officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Burnell R. Hubbard
DANVILLE, Va. - Burnell R. Hubbard, 76, of 226 Girard St., died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 16, 1926, in Danville, he was the son of Willie Eddie Hubbard and Gracie Simpson Hubbard, both deceased.
He worked at Dan River, Inc. as a slasher attendant until his health failed. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by a sister, Oneida H. Evans of the residence.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Phillip Hubbard and Linwood Hubbard and a sister, Vivian Barbour.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Schoolfield Cemetery with the Rev. John Gentry officiating.

Melvin 'Shorty' Martin
DANVILLE, Va. - Melvin Meade Martin, 73, of 819B Holland Rd., died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002. He had been in the hospital since October.
He was born Oct. 22, 1929, in Pittsylvania County.
He married Chriso Matsatsos New Martin on April 6, 2000.
He was a member of Holland Road Baptist Church. He lived most of his life in the Danville area. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from the food-vending business. Before his health failed him, he became an independent broker with game shows at schools and carnivals.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge Roman Eagle #122, a life member of the Danville Scottish Rite Bodies, DAV Archer T. Gammon Chapter and Omar Shrine Temple.
He is survived by his wife of the residence; a brother, Paul Martin of Danville; a sister, Betty Jenkins of Tidewater; a stepdaughter, Julie New Wheeler; two daughters; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
Clariel M. Raikes
CHESTERFIELD, Va. - Clariel M. Raikes, 71, formerly of Danville, widow of Cecil C. Raikes Sr., went to her heavenly home Dec. 21, 2002.
She is survived by her four children, Cecil C. Raikes Jr. and his wife, Virginia, Martha Seamster and her husband, Jerry, Virginia Brown and her husband, Lloyd, Steven C. Raikes and his wife, Madeline, all of Chesterfield; two sisters, Margaret Starr and Rachel Meeks; brother, Paul McDaniel, all of Danville; and eight wonderful grandchildren.
She was a longtime member at First Commonwealth Church.
Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Road, Richmond, where the family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. Sunday and Monday, and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Interment in Dale Memorial Park.
Eleanor Ricketts Richardson
DANVILLE, Va. - Eleanor Ricketts Richardson, 82, of 4221 Franklin Turnpike, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born June 17, 1920, she was the daughter of William Leonard Ricketts and Ida Coleman Ricketts, both deceased.
She was born in Danville, where she lived for a number of years and later moved to the Mt. Hermon community. She was a graduate of Whitmell Farm Life School. She worked at Belks for 30 years and was a member of Belk Retirement Club. She was an active member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church and was treasurer of the Sunday school.
She was married to William Eugene Richardson, who predeceased her in 1992.
She is survived by two sisters, Inez Hopkins of Richmond and Mildred Buckner of Danville; a brother, Charles E. Ricketts and his wife, Rose Ricketts, of Danville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Richardson Payne, who predeceased her in June 1992. She was also predeceased by three sisters, Annie Collins, Margie Myers and Ruby Cleary.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her brother, Charles E. Ricketts, 249 Jordan Street.

Katherine Younger Saunders
CHATHAM, Va. - Katherine Younger Saunders, 86, of 160 Mill Creek Road, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 27, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Emma Younger.
She was a member of Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church, the Mother's Board and a past member of the Usher Board. She was retired from Oak Grove Lodge.
She was married to Robert D. Saunders, who predeceased her.
She is survived by three sons, James C. Saunders of Adelphia, Md., Willie T. Saunders of Oxen Hill, Md. and Ronnie L. Saunders of Suffolk; four daughters, Velma S. Robertson of Chatham, Dorothy S. Wright of Tappahannock, Ernestine Pritchett of Chatham and Lue Jennie Pickens of Fort Washington, Md.; a sister, Mary Lanier; a brother, Calvin Lanier; 39 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sons, Roosevelt and Ray Charles Saunders; four sisters, Alice Younger, Elizabeth Younger, Sina Bennett and Betty Fitzgerald and two brothers, Henry Younger and Willie Younger.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Greater Triumph Missionary Church with the Rev. Anthony Ferebee officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Howerton Funeral Home.

DANVILLE, Va. - Kedra Ann Thomas, 41, of 101 Harris Place, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb, 5, 1961, in Danville, she was the daughter of Harry Brown and Mary E. Thomas.
She was employed by the City of Danville at the Adult Detention Center.
She is survived by a son, Darrin Edwards of Danville; four sisters, Gwendolyn Pierre, Anita Stephens, Flora Thomas, all of Danville and Debbie Fitzgerald of Chesapeake and two brothers, Gregory Thomas and John Thomas, both of Danville.
A memorial will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth officiating.

Lilian Crossley Thomason
DANVILLE, Va. - Lilian Crossley Thomason, of Edgewood Drive, passed away Dec. 20, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Kathleen Murphy, Chesapeake, Va.
She was born in Rochdale, England and came to this country as a young girl and became an American citizen. She lived in Danville most of her life. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, Theodore Thomason.
She is survived by two daughters, June Schwartz of Los Angeles, Calif. and Kathleen Murphy of Chesapeake, Va. Also surviving are three sons, Neil Thomason of Sonora, Calif., James Thomason and Brian Thomason, both of Danville; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was a loving grandmother to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. To them she was "Gommie."
The funeral will be conducted Monday morning, Dec. 23, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Swicegood Funeral Chapel by the Rev. J. Richard Markham. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Sadie Allen, 79, of 404 Southampton Avenue, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born August 18, 1922, in Danville, she was a daughter of Charlie Poteat and Sallie Stamps Poteat.
She was married to Joe Lester Allen, who predeceased her. She was a retired employee of the Community Improvement Council.
She is survived by three daughters, Janice Allen and Cynthia Medley, both of Danville, and Nancy Allen of Durham, N.C.; two sons, Joseph Allen of San Diego, Calif. and Mark Allen of Upper Marlboro, Md.; and one sister, Beatrice Lewis of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Calvin Roberson officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

David Annett
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - David Clayton Annett, 56, of 7018 Laurel Ave., died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at the residence.
Born April 7, 1946, in Danville, he was the son of Robert Gordon Annett, who predeceased him and Dorothy Grinstead Levy, who survives.
He was married to Lynda Edwards Annett, who survives. He had been in declining health since April 24, 2002, as the result of a brain tumor. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy soon after graduation from high school and worked for ENCO in Rocky Mount prior to his illness. He was a member of West Mount Baptist Church and attended Calvery Methodist Church in Virginia.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Jonathan David Annett of Stantonsburg; one daughter, Megan Clayton Annett of Rocky Mount; one stepfather, Joseph "Joe" Levy of Calvary community; two brothers, Michael Annett of Norfolk, Va. and Patrick Annett of Chicago, Ill.;one stepson, Jamie Edwards of Lynchburg, Va.; one stepsister, Stephanie Ellis of Elberon, Va.; three stepbrothers, David Levy of Alexander, Va., Richard Levy of Newport News, Va., and Mark Levy of Hampton, Va.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Calvary United Methodist Church, Rt. 119 off Rt. 58 East with the Rev. David LeFon and the Rev. Julius Whitley officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery with military honors performed by American Legion Dan River Post 1097 Honor Guard.
