Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Wayne Davis

DANVILLE, Va. - Wayne Winston Davis, 68, of 701 Brightwell Drive, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one year of declining health.
Born Sept. 3, 1932, in Dunbar, Pa., he was a son of Robert Weldon Davis and Annie Zimmerman Davis.
He was married to Dorothy "Tina" Browder Davis, who survives.
He was a member and past Master of the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge No. 210.
He was a member of the Kaufman Brydon Chapter No. 87 of the Order of the Eastern Star and Trinity Methodist Church.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served in the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Linda D. Rhue of Blanch, N.C. and Cindy D. Scearce of Blairs; two sons, Wayne W. Davis Jr. of Chatham and Sammy W. Davis of Glen Allen; three sisters, Dorothy Ridenour of Apple Valley, Calif., Mae Oliver of Greensboro and Rose Etta Purgason of Charlottesville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park, with Masonic Graveside Rites by Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge No. 122.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Townes Funeral Home.

Herbert Fielder

BEDFORD, Va. - Herbert "Tootie" Fielder, 70, of 1902 Dundee Road, Huddleston, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at his residence.
Born Sept. 4, 1930, in Franklin County, he was a son of Harry Fielder and Alice Hammock Fielder.
He was a farmer and a member of Round Pond Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Sarah Crews of Sandy Level, Pearl Crews of Danville and Betty Short of Gretna; three brothers, Homer Fielder and David Fielder, both of Antioch, Ill., and Edward Earl Fielder of Hurt.
He was predeceased by five brothers, William Fielder, Jimmy Fielder, Bryant Fielder, Everette Fielder and Wayne Fielder.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Round Pond Baptist Church cemetery, with the Rev. John Belderes and the Rev. A. A. Blanks officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his sister, Betty Short, 306 Henry St., Gretna.

Bernard Grant

DANVILLE, Va. - Bernard Chesleigh Grant Jr., 74, of 142 Holbrook St., died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at his residence after a period of declining health.
Born Feb. 21, 1926, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was a son of Bernard Chesleigh Grant and Mary Susan Haynes Grant.
On July 24, 1948, he was married to Irene Doak Grant, who survives. He was owner and operator of Midtown Market for 45 years. He was a graduate of Ruffin High School, Ruffin, N.C., and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Gary R. Grant of Danville; one daughter, Janice Grant Harris of Sutherlin; five sisters, Margaret G. Burnette, Josephine G. Brande and Louise G. Moore, all of Danville, and Geraldine G. Moore and Nancie G. Young, both of Pelham, N.C.; three brothers, Edward Dillion Grant of Danville, A. Franklin Grant of Ringgold and Reginald W. Grant of Providence, N.C.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Mountain View cemetery with Dr. Frank R. Campbell officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Mary Swanson Hill

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Swanson Norman Hill, 80, formerly of 646 South Main St. Chatham, Va. died Sunday, December 24, 2000 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
God saw the road was getting rough, the hills were hard to climb. He gently closed those loving eyes and whispered, 'Peace be Thine.' The weary hours, the days of pain, the everpatient wornout frame has found sweet rest at last.
Mrs. Hill was born on May 8, 1920 in Pittsylvania County the daughter of George Halcott Norman and Lucile Easley Norman.
She was married to William David Hill who predeceased her on May 4, 1989.
Mrs. Hill was a graduate of the University of Virginia with a Registered Nursing Degree. She worked as a Registered Nurse for Hargrave Military Academy, Chatham Hall and Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Hill is survived by one son David Hill, of Ringgold, Va.; three daughters, Teresa Hill Stearns of Richmond, Va.; Valerie Lynn Hill of Washington, D.C.; and Marilu Hill Jones of Winston-Salem, N.C.; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2000, 1:00 P.M. at Townes Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Jeff Wright will be conducting the service. A private interment will follow at Hillcrest cemetery in Chatham.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 27, 2000, 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at Townes Funeral Home.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the Chatham Rescue Squad.

Rev. Silas G. Moore

CHATHAM, Va. - Rev. Silas G. Moore, age 87, of 432 Huntstown Road, Chatham, Va. died Monday afternoon in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 13, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Henry and Nannie Hodnett Moore. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Prattie Moore and one son, Calvin Moore.
He was a member of the Cherrystone Baptist Church and was a lifetime member of the NAACP, where he received the Golden Heritage Award.
For forty-one years, he worked for the town of Chatham as the General Superintendent. For fifty years, he pastored the Sandy Hill Baptist Church, Rosebud Baptist Church, Mt. Olive Baptist Church, and the New Bethel Baptist Church in Pittsylvania County. He also pastored the Morning Side Baptist Church and the Snow Creek Baptist Church of Franklin County, Va.
He is survived by a devoted son, Silas Moore, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth A. Moore of Chatham, Va.; three grandchildren - Andre Moore of Santa Maria, Ca.; Jacqueline Moore of Florence, N.J, and Ronald Moore of Willingboro, N.J.; one daughter-in-law - Flora Barnes of Willingboro, N.J. and many other relatives.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday (12-30-00) at 1:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. Floyd Jones with interment to follow in the Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham, Va. There will be a public viewing Friday afternoon (12-29-00) at the funeral home from 3:00-7:00 p.m. The family is at the residence.
Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of the arrangements.

Elizabeth Newbill

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Elizabeth Priest Newbill, 89, of 2060 Old Cluster Springs Road, died Dec. 25, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 14, 1911, in San Clemente, Calif., she was a daughter of Edward Norvel Priest and Florence Loomis Priest Harris.
She was married to Eugene Earl Newbill, who predeceased her. She was a member of Scottsburg Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Doris Affal Newbill Jones of Halifax and Patsy Newbill Cole of South Boston; 16 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Thomas Edward Newbill and five brothers, Bob, Bud, Dilly, Ed and Virgil Priest.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Grover Stevens officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oakland cemetery, Scottsburg.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Eugene Perkins

DANVILLE, Va. - Eugene Calvin Perkins, 73, of 2020 Franklin Turnpike, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 31, 1927, in Gretna, he was a son of Henry Lee Perkins and Sallie Neal Perkins.
He was married to Lucille Bennett Neal Perkins, who survives. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Italy. He retired from Life of Virginia after 30 years. He also worked for Crowell-Long Auto and was a member of North MAin Baptist Church where he was a member of the John Oakes Sunday school class. He was a former member of Southhall Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Gary Perkins and Alex Perkins, both of Danville; two stepsons, George Neal Jr. and David Ray Neal of Danville; one stepdaughter, Jane Neal McNicholas of Danville; two brothers, Johnny Perkins of Danville and Harold Perkins of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Eva P. Hammack of Gretna and Evelyn P. Farmer of Hurt, and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Berkley Perkins, Curtis Perkins, David Perkins and Charlie Perkins.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at North Main Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Noble officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park. Graveside military honors will be performed by American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Helen Rigney

SANDY LEVEL, Va. - Helen Corrine Sifford Burdette Rigney, of 2437 Yorkshire Drive died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Lewis-Gale Medical Center.
She was the daughter of June Sifford and Bessie Bolen Sifford.
She was married to Jim Burdette, who predeceased her. She was later married to Houston Rigney, who also predeceased her. She was a member of Sandy Level Baptist Church and was the owner of Gretna Flea Market.
Survivors include three sons, James A. Burdette and Jamie Everette Burdette, both of Sandy Level, and Brady Burdette of Penhook; two daughters, Brenda Rigney of Rocky Mount and Carmen Sue Backus of Sandy Level; three stepsons, Kenneth E. Rigney of Hurt, Doug Rigney of Glade Hill and James E. Rigney of Burnt Chimney; three stepdaughters, Patricia Burdette and Barbara Johnston, both of Penhook, and Sally Brown of Hurt; 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by two sons, Shady Burdette and Timmy Burdette; two daughters, Madonna Rutherford and Deborah Burdette and one stepdaughter, Shirley Dalton.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Sandy Level Baptist Church with the Rev. Gene Ashworth and the Rev. R.G. Rowland officiating. Interment icon will follow at Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Elizabeth Rodgers

DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Rodgers, 62, of 638 Monument St. died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at her residence.
Born Feb. 25, 1938, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Otis Mack Rodgers and Nora Irby Rodgers.
Before a decline in health, she was employed with the Brin Center Nursing Home, Yanceyville, N.C.
Survivors include six daughters, Teresa Hunt, Lenora Rodgers, Juanita Rodgers, Maria Rodgers and Earline Keen, all of Danville and Kathy Avery of Dale City; three sons, James Swan Jr., Fred Rodgers and Khaleel Rodgers, all of Danville; three sisters, Julia Farrow and Shirley Dodson of Danville and Ella Brown of Richmond; three brothers, Walter Rodgers of Clarkton, N.C., William Rodgers of Danville and Herman Walker of East Orange, N.J.; 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Howard Graves officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Howard Sparrow

DANVILLE, Va. - Howard Thomas Sparrow, 84, of 160 Sherwood Drive died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at his residence.
Born August 15, 1916, in Keeling, he was a son of William A. Sparrow and Josephine Lewis Sparrow.
He was married to Lucille Hazelwood Sparrow, who predeceased him Jan. 30, 1999.
He lived in Pittsylvania County all his life and was a farmer before working for the Virginia Department of Transportation for 17 years.
He was a member of Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby H. Sparrow and Barry L. Sparrow, both of Charleston, S.C.; three brothers, Pete Sparrow of Sutherlin and Jack Sparrow and Edward Sparrow, both of Danville; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Danny Parker officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Barker funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence.
