Clarice Arnall
DANVILLE, Va. - Clarice Payne Daniel Arnall, 91, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Nov. 29, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Daniel Perkins Payne and Kate Aaron Payne.
She was first married
to Reuben J. Daniel, who predeceased her, April 13, 1970, she was later married
to John Arnall Jr., who predeceased her, April 18, 1987.
She lived most of her life in the Danville area, where she had worked at L. Herman Department Store and later worked at Thalhimer’s for 31 years. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Zadie P. Gilbert and Frances P. Gammon, both of Danville and two stepdaughters, Margaret Booker of Tucker, Ga. and Carolyn Staska of Vienna.
In addition to her first and second husbands, she was predeceased by two brothers, Jack Payne and Buster Payne.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Adams officiating.
The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Funeral Home.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew or to the charity of your choice.
Herman Averett
DANVILLE, Va. - Herman “Hank” Elsworth Averett, 59, of 149 Beaver Mill Road died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000.
Born Dec. 19, 1941, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George Saunders Averett and Pearl Averett, who survives.
He attended Pittsylvania County Schools and worked for Davis Storage and Warehouse.
In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include one son, Herman Jackson of North Carolina; four sisters, Arlene Gunn, Carolyn A. Miller, Helen A. Adams and Pamela D. Averett, all of Danville and six brothers, Charles E. Averett, Percy L. Averett, Lawrence Averett, Eric D. Averett, Roy Averett, all of Danville and James A. Averett of Piles Grove, N.J.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas D. Johnson. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. Monday at Beaver’s Funeral Home and other times at the residence of a sister, Arlene Gunn, 1216 Kentuck Rd., Danville.
Richard Bradshaw
ALTON, Va. - Richard Joseph “Joe” Bradshaw, 61, of 3071 Cedar Grove Road died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Aug. 19, 1939, in Halifax County, he was a son of Richard Y. Bradshaw and Mary Hite Bradshaw.
He was married
to Patricia Coon Bradshaw, who survives.
He was employed as a boiler operator, with Georgia Pacific. He was a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Lynn B. Montgomery of Scottsburg and Connie B. Jarrett of Danville; one son, Curtis R. Bradshaw of Danville; one sister, Lucy B. Slaughter of Richmond and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel, South Boston, with the Rev. Michael Sullivan and the Rev. Melvin Bradshaw officiating. Interment
will follow at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Caroline Crumpton
DANVILLE, Va. - Caroline Scott Crumpton, 83, formerly of Kemper Road, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 21, 1917, in Shady Grove, N.C., she was a daughter of William Crumpton and Ada Durham Crumpton.
She worked or Dan River Inc., before retiring on disability and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one brother, Bill Crumpton of Danville.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Kate Crumpton Gentry and Bessie Hancock Riddle.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Fred Cox officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 103 Laramie Circle.
Daniel Moore
DANVILLE, Va. - Daniel Everett Moore, 58, of 2001 Woodlake Drive died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at his residence, after one and one-half years of declining health.
Born Nov. 20, 1942, in Harrisonburg, he was a son of Lawrence B. Moore and Sara McBrayer Moore, who survives.
On July 9, 1966, he was married
to Mary Alice Johnson Moore, who survives.
He lived most of his adult life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas, where prior to his decline in health he was employed with Ennis Business Forms as current M.I.S. coordinator and was past Administrative Manager. He was a member of Harrisonburg Baptist Church and attended North Main Baptist Church in Danville.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother, survivors include one daughter, Dana E. Moore of Durham, N.C.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, with the Rev. A Kyle Flora and the Rev. Kenneth Clark officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Catherine Claiborne
SCOTTSBURG, Va. - Catherine Claiborne, 77, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at Berry Hill Nursing Home, South Boston.
She was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Halifax County.
Survivors include five sons, Henry Claiborne of Virgilina, the Rev. Ronald Claiborne of Scottsburg, Wayne Claiborne of Richmond, Alvin Claiborne of Halifax and Erwin Claiborne of Honolulu, Hawaii; one sister, Frances Lucas of Fredricksburg and one grandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Baptist Church with the Rev. Byrd Blackwell officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Ronald Claiborne, 1095 Green Level Road.

Christopher Gauldin
RINGGOLD, Va. - Christopher Thomas Gauldin, 26, of 780 Chaney Store Road died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, as a result of a hunting accident.
Born Nov. 23, 1974, in Danville, he was a son of Tommy Gauldin and Linda Brooks Gauldin, who survive.
He was married
to Jessica Bledsoe Gauldin, who survives.
He had spent most his life in the Mountain Hill community of Pittsylvania County. Before becoming disabled in May 1999, he was employed as a welder and a brick mason and had worked for Atkinson Truck Sales and P.M.S. Construction Company. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of Danville, his mother of Ringgold, and his father of Danville, survivors include his stepmother, Kathie Gauldin of Danville; one daughter, Brittany Nicole Gauldin of Ringgold; one brother, Randy Gauldin of Ringgold; two sisters, Jennifer Goodman of Ruffin, N.C. and Amy Gauldin of Ringgold; one half-sister, Anna Gauldin of Danville; his maternal grandmother, Anna Brogans Brooks of Pelham, N.C. and his stepgrandparents, Charlie Hill and Lera Hill of Danville.
He was predeceased by one sister, Melissa Gauldin.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Calvin Hines and the Rev. John Stewart officiating. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his father, Tommy Gauldin, 1805 Old Mayfield Road and the residence of his mother, Linda Gauldin, 780 Chaney Store Road, Ringgold.

Barbara Henderson
HALIFAX, Va. - Barbara Overby Henderson, 69, of 2036 Salishan Drive died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at her residence.
Born August 7, 1931, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Luther J. Overby and Minnie Lee Dalton Overby.
She was married
to Malcolm Bruce Henderson, who predeceased her. She was a retired banker with Central Fidelity and was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Diane H. Nipper of Halifax; three sisters, Dorothy O. Sneed and Miriam O. Shumaker, both of Nathalie and Ruth O. Moon of Long Island; three brothers, James R. Overby of Summerville, S.C., Lowell T. Overby of Richmond and Charles B. Overby of Gladys and one granddaughter.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Monday at Catawba Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Harvey McCarter
TOWNSEND, Tenn. - Harvey Delozier McCarter, age 80 of Townsend, Tennessee passed away Saturday, December 30, 2000 at Blount Memorial Hospital, Maryville, TN. He was of the Baptist faith; formerly employed with T.V.A.; Veteran of the U.S. Army having served during WWII; preceded in death by parents; three brothers, one sister.
Survivors: son & daughter in law, Harvey Leon & Karen McCarter, Danville, Virginia; daughter & son in law, Cynthia Diane & Tony Peters, Providence, North Carolina; grandchildren, Kristi Coleman, Anthony Scott McCarter, Timothy Peters; great-grandchildren, Carleigh Coleman, Andrew Scott McCarter; several nieces & nephews.
Family & friends will meet 1:00 pm Wednesday, January 3, 2001 at Walker’s Valley cemetery for graveside service & interment, Rev. James Smiley officiating.

Ada Pulliam
DANVILLE, Va. - Ada Willia Pulliam, of Stratford House, Apt. 205, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 8, 1908, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of James Munford Pulliam and Sallie McSherry Pulliam.
She was a member of Alton Baptist Church and was a retired school teacher, having taught for 49 years.
Survivors include six nieces, Wilma Gibbs Soyars and Sherlyn Harrell, both of Raleigh, N.C., Patricia Whitfield Seymour of Chesapeake, Katherine Phillips of Greenville, N.C., Jean Harrell Raynor of Richmond and Phyllis Williams Sherk of Birmingham, Ala. and one nephew, Charles Harrell of Albuquerque, N.M.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Alton Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Phil Ellinburg officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
