DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia Murriel Long, 84, of Danville, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 24, 1916, in Blanch, N.C., she was the daughter of Etta and Charlie Henry Long.
Survivors include five sisters, Lois Anna Long-Howard of Hampton, Delores Long-Williams of New York, Marlene Long Wharton, Leovia Long-Henry and Mabel Long-Hodnett, all of Danville and one brother, Linwood Palmer Long of Bronx, N.Y.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home with the Rev. Alphonso Tate officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 208 Beaver Mill Road, Apt. A in Danville.

Stanley Olsen
DANVILLE, Va. - Stanley Andrew Olsen, 91, of 2225 Ridge Road Danville, Virginia, died Monday, October 01, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center - Danville, Virginia.
Born May 3, 1910 in Philadelphia, PA., he was the son of Edward A. Olsen and Sarah Hartzell Olsen - Both deceased.
He was married
to Lydia Krumbolot Olsen - Deceased. He worked as a Production Engineer for Porter Cable in Syracuse, New York. He was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers. He was a former member of the New Berean Baptist Church of Philadelphia where he was a choir member and Church Treasurer. He was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church.
Survivors include Son, Norman Olsen of Seneca, SC; Daughter-In-Law, Catherine M. Olsen of Seneca, SC and Grandson, David S. Olsen of Seneca, SC.
The funeral will be held Thursday, October 4, 2001 at 5:30 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home, Inc., Danville, Virginia with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating.
The graveside services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday morning at Arlington cemetery in Drexil Hill, Pa.
The family will receive friends Thursday, October 4, 2001 from 5-5:30 p.m. prior to service at Barker Funeral Home Chapel - Danville, Virginia.
Lillian Ragle
DANVILLE, Va. - Lillian Wilkerson Ragle, 93, formerly of 17 Milton Ave., died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at Piney Forest Health Care Center, where she had been a resident for six months.
Born March 20, 1908, in Danville, she was the daughter of John E. Wilkerson and Mary Hughes Wilkerson.
She was married
Dec. 23, 1925, to Theodore Ragle, who predeceased her April 6, 1990. She lived in Danville all of her life and worked for Dan River Inc. for 30 years prior to her retirement at the age of 62. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Theodore Robert Ragle and John W. Ragle, both of Danville; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Markham officiating. Interment
will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.
The family received friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Charles Carter
RINGGOLD, Va. - Charles Joseph Carter, Jr., 75, of 2528 Kentuck Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001 at his residence after six months of declining health.
Born Sept. 14, 1925, in Danville, he was a son of Charles Joseph Carter Sr. and Isma Ferguson Carter.
He was married
November 17, 1946 to Mary Ellen Wells Carter, who survives.
He attended public school in Martinsville, Fort Union Military Academy and Rutgers School of Banking. He served as a Merchant Marine during World War II.
He began his banking career in 1946 at First National Bank where he retired in 1988 as senior executive vice president after 42 years. He was an active member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church where he served as an usher and former member of the administrative board.
He was a member, past master and former secretary of the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge No. 122. He was a member of the Danville Scottish Rite, where he was 32nd Degree Mason, and member and past worthy patron of Robertson Bennett Chapter 70 Order of the Eastern Star. He was former chairman of the Board of the Eastern Star Home in Richmond, and served as chairman of the Board of the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
He served on the boards of the Southern Virginia Economic Development Organization, Inc., the Pittsylvania Economic Development Organization, Inc. (PEDO) and the Pittsylvania County Red Cross. He was a member and past president of the Danville Golf Club, a member and past president of the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History and chairman of the Board of the Scholarship Committee at Averett College.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one daughter, Catherine C. Woods of Ringgold.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Bennett officiating. Interment
will follow at Mountain View cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites by Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge No. 122.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Alvia Cundiff
SALEM, Va. - Alvia Agnes Moran Miller Cundiff, 92, formerly of Chatham, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001.
She was married
to Roy P. Cundiff, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one daughter, Elinor Miller Markham of Forest, one stepson, Robert E. Cundiff of Greensboro, N.C., one stepdaughter, Nell C. Staples of Burnsville, N.C., grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters, and a brother.
A funeral was held 2 p.m. Thursday at Lotz Funeral Home Salem with the Rev. Dianne Johnson officiating. Interment
followed in Sherwood Memorial Park.

Robert Lipford
DANVILLE, Va. - Robert Earl Lipford, 34, of 108 Carver Dr., formerly of North Point Apartments, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000.
Born August 3, 1966, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Annie Pearl Johnson Lipford and Robert Lipford, who survives.
He was married
to Sharon Denise McLaughlin Lipford, who survives.
He worked at Southern Processors in Danville.
In addition to his wife of the the residence and his father of Danville, he is survived by one daughter, Shanekqua Lipford, one son, Robert Ronte’ Lipford, and one brother, Michael Lipford, all of Danville.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Camp Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ernest Barksdale officiating. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Christopher Matherly
DANVILLE, Va. - Christopher Lee Matherly, 17, of 616 Duncan Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center from injuries received in an automobile accident Monday.
Born Sept. 15, 1983, in Danville, he was a son of Ricky James Matherly and Susan Ann Kirks, who survive.
In addition to his parents of Danville, survivors include a stepfather, Adam C. Kirks of Danville, one brother, Ricky J. Matherly Jr. of Danville, one sister Sharri Matherly of Danville, maternal grandparents, Leroy S. and Connie A. Kirks of Danville, and paternal grandmother, Vera S. Matherly of Dry Fork.
He was predeceased by one paternal grandfather, Jesse J. Matherly.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Ira Yeatts officiating.

Elnora Robertson
DANVILLE, Va. - Elnora Keen Adams Robertson, 96, of 288 Callahan Hill Rd., died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 10, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Martin and Nannie Thornton Keen.
She was a member of Mt. Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member of the missionary and the usher board.
Survivors include a daughter, Beatrice Stewart of Danville; two sons, David Adams of Richmond and James Adams of Danville; and one stepson, Herbert Robertson of Danville.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Reynolds officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service at Mt. Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church, and other times at the residence.

Lewis Short
HALIFAX, Va. - Lewis Frank Short, 85, of 671 Pine Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001 at his residence after one year of declining health.
Born May 29, 1915 in Vance County, N.C., he was a son of John Benjamin and Emma Kearson Short.
He was married
April 4, 1942 to Mary Anna Frazier, who survives.
He served in the Army with the Anti-Tank Company, 60th Infantry from Oct. 23, 1941 until Aug. 3, 1945 and earned a Purple Heart Medal, Oak Leaf Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal and a European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon. He participated in the Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes campaigns. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Disabled Veterans. He was a member of Revelation Baptist Church. He lived most of his life in Halifax County where he worked as a farmer and US Plywood for several years before retirement on disability.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Sandra S. Stevens of Rustburg and Kaye S. Dunkley of Danville; one brother, Herbert Short of Bullock, N.C.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by four sisters and three brothers.
A funeral service will be held 3:30 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs and the Rev. Victor Coghill officiating. Interment
will follow at Gravel Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary "Peggy" Morton Hall, 66, of 217 Campbell St., died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 10, 1934 in Danville, she was a daughter of Watson Williams and Katherine McGhee Morton.
She was married
to Raymond Hall, who predeceased her.
She was employed at Bassett Furniture Co. for several years prior to her retirement, and was a homemaker.
Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Morton of Danville; three brothers, Robert Morton and Bishop James Morton, both of Danville, and William "Buddy" Morton of New Rochelle, N.Y.; two grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Bishop John M. Burton Sr., Eulogist, officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
