SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Ozell Harris, 80, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born May 16, 1923 in Georgia, he was a son of Dan and Georgia Wooten Harris.
He attended public school in Georgia and later moved to New York, where he spent most of his life.
Survivors include, one brother, Harvey Harris of Jacksonville, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Maxine Jones of Alton; and two stepsons, Harold Bello and Leonard Whitlock, both of New York.
He was predeceased by one son, Eric Harris, and one long time friend, Sophia Whitlock.
A funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church with Dr. H.R. Surgeon officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel in Semora, N.C.
Henry Jones
NATHALIE, Va. - Henry Lee Jones, 77, died Sunday, Dec. 31 at his residence.
He was born June 11, 1923 in Halifax County.
He was married
to Sarah Jones, who survives.
In addition to his wife of Alexandria, he is survived by one daughter, Juanita Williams, and one son, Michael Jones, both of Alexandria; four sisters, Annie Snydor of Halifax, Lottie Traynham of Clover, Mildred Brown of New Haven, Conn., and Marylee Davis of Scottsburg; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Roland Claiborne officiating.

Harry Link
DANVILLE,Va. - Harry Rollen Link Sr., 88, of 220 Hawthorne Dr., died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 2, 1913 in Danville, he was a son of James L. and Margaret C. Link.
He was married
Sept. 20, 1940 to Mary Elizabeth Robins Link, who survives.
He owned and operated Link-Watson Corp. and Link Watson Plumbing, Mill Supply Company since 1939. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was a former chairman of the Board of Deacons, a director of American National Bank and Trust, Co., a director of Mutual Savings and Loan of Va., chairman of the Board of Virginia Carolina Broadcasting Co., a director and member of the executive board of Memorial Hospital, director of the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, president of the Danville Golf Club, and a charter member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was vice-president of the Retail Merchants Association, the Ramah Lodge and the Danville Scottish Rite Bodies.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Robin Link Gerstner of Greenwich, Conn.; one son, Harry R. Link Jr. of Danville and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Jack F. Heinsohn Jr. officiating.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew.

Christopher Matherly
DANVILLE, Va. - Christopher Lee Matherly, 17, of 616 Duncan Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center from injuries received in an automobile accident Monday.
Born Sept. 15, 1983, in Danville, he was a son of Ricky James Matherly and Susan Ann Kirks, who survive.
In addition to his parents of Danville, survivors include a stepfather, Adam C. Kirks of Danville, one brother, Ricky J. Matherly Jr. of Danville, one sister Sharri Matherly of Danville, maternal grandparents, Leroy S. and Connie A. Kirks of Danville, and paternal grandmother, Vera S. Matherly of Dry Fork.
He was predeceased by one paternal grandfather, Jesse J. Matherly.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Ira Yeatts officiating.
The family will receive friends at the grandparents residence, 7614 Martinsville Rd.
Minnie Morris
KENTUCK, Va. - Minnie Talbott Morris, 77, formerly of the Kentuck community, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001 at Piney Forest Health Care Center after five years of declining health.
Born May 5, 1923 in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Robert J. and Nettie Pruitt Talbott.
She was married
June 14, 1941 to Harry Elmo Morris, who predeceased her Dec. 25, 1981.
She lived her entire life in the Ringgold and Kentuck communities and prior to retirement worked for the Pittsylvania County School system at Dan River Elementary School cafeteria. She was a longtime member of Kentuck Baptist Church and at the time of her death was a member of the First Methodist Temple, where her son is the pastor.
Survivors include three sons, Richard L. Morris of Keeling, William A. Morris of Blairs and Kenneth D. Morris of Danville; two daughters, Nadine M. Frey of Virginia Beach and Gloria M. Mills of Danville; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Roy Talbott, and a sister, Mary T. Dix. She was the last survivor of her generation.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, Kenneth Morris, 7164 Old Richmond Rd.
Ricky Oakes Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Richard Jackson "Ricky" Oakes Sr., 60, of 3120 Mount Cross Rd., died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after 10 months of declining health.
Born May 10, 1940 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Major Oakes and Mary Crider Oakes.
Mr. Oakes lived his entire life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County area. Prior to his decline in health Mr. Oakes owned and operated Ricky's Convenient Market and Ricky's Hunting and Fishing Supplies for the past 25 years. Mr. Oakes was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Richard Jackson "Ricky" Oakes Jr. and Stacy H. Oakes of Dry Fork; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Mike Hart of Danville; two daughters, Bonnie Oakes and Vickie Oakes, both of Blairs; two brothers, Billy Oakes of Sutherlin and John Oakes of Danville; three sisters, Catherine O. Hicks and Onie O. Farthing, both of Danville, and Mary O. Mullins of Martinsville.
Mr. Oakes was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Allen Holder officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, 120 Waller Lane, Dry Fork.
Mammie Adams
AXTON, Va. - Mammie E. Keen Adams, 79, of 110 Keen Drive died Friday, Jan.5, 2001.
Born in Henry County, she was a daughter of Edd and Nannie J. Keen.
She was married
to James E. Adams, who predeceased her. She was a member of New Cascade Primitive Baptist Church, Cascade and served as a church clerk. She was retired from Fieldcrest-Cannon Mills, Eden, N.C.
Survivors include two sons, George E. Adams and Charlie Adams, both of Axton; one sister, Helen K. Law of Dry Fork; four brothers, Edd Keen Jr. and Silas Keen of Martinsville and Wash Keen and King Keen of Axton.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Thennie K. Redd and one brother, Floyd Keen.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Moral Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Axton. Interment
will be at the Keen Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Mabel Anderson
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Mabel Laundrum Anderson, 83, of 4100 Halifax Road died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001 at the Woodview.
Born Sept. 2, 1917, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Herbert Clay Laundrum and Hester Henderson Laundrum.
She was married
to E. Irving Anderson, who predeceased her. She was a member of Center United Church of Christ.
Survivors include one son, Mike Anderson of Halifax; one daughter,
Carole Lacks of South Boston; one sister, Jean Guthrie of South Boston and two grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Lucille L. Franklin.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Wilder and the Rev. Mark Andes officiating. Interment
will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens

Carter Clews Bowling
FERRUM, Va. - Carter Clews Bowling, 85 of Ferrum, died Thursday, January 4, 2001 as the result of an automobile accident. He was born January 8, 1916 and was a World War II veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Rosa Bet Bowling, one sister, Elva B. Sloan and one brother, Hylton Bowling. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Sylvia Martin Bowling of the home; two daughters, Sandra Mitchell of Rocky Mount, Patsy and Jim Elliot of Roanoke; one son, David and Debbie Bowling of Ferrum; five grandchildren, Ginger Hodges, Benjamin Hodges, Sabrina Turner, Heather and Meghan Bowling; one great-grandson, Devin carter Turner; four sisters, Helen Peters, Mildred Simmons, Claudine Inman, Millie Peters, all of Danville; two brothers, Phillip and Bill Bowling of Danville; one uncle, Noel Spencer of Ferrum and one aunt, Macie Lewis of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in Flora Funeral Chapel with Rev. Etholene Johnson, Rev. Charles H. Ward and Rev. James Hensley officiating. Interment

Lucy Ann Hodges Davis
GRETNA, Va. - Lucy Ann Hodges Davis, age 83, of Gretna, formerly of Hurt died Friday, January 5, 2001 in Gretna Health Care Center.
Born March 5, 1917 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Robert A. Hodges and Priscilla Jones Hodges. She was predeceased by her husband, Felix Thornton Davis and two sisters, Minnie H. Rowland and Lillian H. Terry. Mrs. Davis was a member of Monte Vista Baptist Church and a retired employee of Burlington Industries.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Zane Barbour of Hurt and Shirley and Clyde Preas of Lynchburg; two brothers, Joe D. Hodges and Billy A. Hodges both of Gretna; four grandchildren, David Preas, Linda Parrish, Debbie Wells and Rick Barbour; two great-grandchildren, Allison Barbour and Jamie Walker.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 8, 2001 at Monte Vista Baptist Church by the Rev. Latta Terry and Rev. Glenn Graves. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, January 7 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Zane Barbour, 5576 Blue Ridge Drive, Hurt.

Joseph Hayden Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Joseph Edward Hayden Sr., 77, of 303 Plum St., died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born Jan. 7, 1923, in Danville, he was a son of Charlie L. and Mary Pruitt Hayden.
He was married
to Mabel Gauldin Hayden, who predeceased him Jan. 3, 1998.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II, and he participated in the invasion of Anzio, Italy, Europe, North Africa, and the Pacific Theater. He was in the water for four days after the ship he was serving on was sunk. He received the American Area Medal, Victory Medal, World War II Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, European African Medal, and one Star.
He worked as a salesman for Link-Watson, Riverside Hardware, and Pittsylvania Hardware. He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church, the VFW Hugh T. Williams Post, the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 and the Seminole Archery Club.
Survivors include one son, Joseph E. Hayden, Jr. of the residence; four daughters, Martha H. Dillard of Sutherlin, Barbara H. Williams of Odensburg, N.Y., Julia H. Jones of San Antonio, Texas and Rebecca R. Hayden of South Boston; two brothers, Bennie K. Hayden of Danville and Charles L. Hayden of Houston, Texas, and five grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Keen Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Brown and the Rev. Thomas Wright officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens where military honors will be performed by American Legion Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
