SUTHERLIN, Va. - Carrie Gilley Revis, 81, of 176 Pounds Road died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg.
Born Feb. 11, 1919, in Benham, Ken., she was a daughter of Baxter Gilley and Rebecca Blair Gilley.
She was married
to J.B. Revis, who predeceased her. She lived in Sutherlin for almost 12 years. She worked for Dan River Inc. for many years and was a member of Victory Baptist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Vernon Gilley Sr. of Stafford County and Rudolph Gilley of Danville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Hylton Lawrence officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Alta Slayton
DANVILLE, Va. - Alta Vance Myers Slayton, 80, of 191 Northwest Blvd., died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Born Aug. 26, 1920 in Pittsville, she was a daughter of Zebulon Vance and Vella Howell Myers.
She was married
April 9, 1937 to Jessie Howard Slayton, who predeceased her on June 7, 1973.
She lived most of her life in Danville. She was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church and the Young at Heart Club. She was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc. where she worked in No. 4-B Dress.
Survivors include two sisters, Alice M. Pickerel of Gretna and Joyce S. Miller of Virginia Beach.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Tom Brown and the Rev. Thomas Wright officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Rush Walker Sr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Rush Milton Walker Sr., 80, of 169 Carter Dr., died Saturday Jan. 6, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Born March 18, 1920 in Saltville, he was a son of Benjamin Franklin Walker Jr. and Tiny Clementine Frye Walker.
He was married
October 29, 1939 to Vera Canupp Walker, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville. He was a member of Lynn Haven Baptist Church, and was a former member of Keen Street Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Club. He was a retired plumbing pipefitter and welder. He was a member of the United Association of Plumbers & Pipefitters Union Local No. 491.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Delores Walker Phelps of Danville; one son, Rush M. Walker Jr. of Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister, Myrtle F. Walker of Denbigh; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Paris Walker, Charlie Walker and Jack Walker, and one sister, Annie W. Frye.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Bennie Poovey officiating. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence.
James Buckner
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - James Herbert Buckner, 86, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center after an illness.
Born Aug. 27, 1914 in Danville, Va., he was a son of Blanche Clayton Buckner and James Christopher Buckner.
He was married
to Marion O’Brien Buckner, who predeceased him.
He was valedictorian, senior class president and captain of his football team at George Washington High School in Danville, Va. He received football scholarships to Duke University, University of North Carolina and University of Virginia. He served in the Navy during World War II as a chief boatswain’s mate stationed at San Diego Naval Yard. He was a resident of Kernersville, N.C. for 25 years where he was a contract manager for H.E. Crawford Co. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville. After his retirement from Stencel Aero Engineering in Arden, N.C. in 1979, he moved to Myrtle Beach and owned the Tally Ho Motor Inn along with his son, Jim. He was active as a director of the Myrtle Beach Motel Association and was chairman of the Co-Op Purchasing Program. He was a member of Myrtlewood Golf Course. He had several holes-in-one and won the senior division of the DuPont World Ameteur at the age of 77.
Survivors include three sons, Jim Buckner of Myrtle Beach, Mike Buckner and Patrick Buckner, both of Kernersville, N.C.; one sister, Jewell Bass of Ringgold, Va.; one brother, Harold Buckner of Danville, and five grandchildren.
A private memorial service was held Jan. 6 at Myrtle Beach.
Ruth Crews
ALTON, Va. - Ruth Estelle Morris Crews, 81, of 2224 Paradise Rd., died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at her residence.
Born Nov. 20, 1919 in Halifax County, she was a daughter of James Anderson and Mary Alice Bowes Morris.
She was married
to Harrell Lee Crews.
She was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, James E. Crews of Fort Mill, S.C. and Reggie E. Crews of Alton; three daughters, Brenda C. Trammell of South Boston, Shelby Elliott and Berniece C. Perkins, both of Alton; two sisters, Willie Puryear and Doris Gordon, both of South Boston; ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-stepchildren.
She was predeceased by one grandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Grover Stevens officiating. Interment
will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home.
Hugh Davis
DANVILLE, Va. - Hugh Draper Davis, 85, of 4418 Westover Dr., died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after several years of declining health.
Born Oct. 27, 1915 in Brosville, Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Hugh Lee and Mary Draper Davis.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He previously farmed and worked at Dan River Mills, Inc. He was a member of Brosville United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Eleanor Thomasson of Martinsville and Barbara N. Davis of Danville, and three brothers, Henry L. Davis, Jasper R. Davis and George W. Davis, all of Danville.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brosville United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Rochford and the Rev. Daryl S. Joyce officiating. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Florence Gibson
CHATHAM, Va. - Florence Haskins Gibson, age 88, of 313 Maysville Road, Chatham, Virginia died January 7, 2001 at the Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville.
Mrs. Gibson was born January 6, 1913 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Daniel B. Haskins and Anna Custer Haskins.
She was the wife of the late Otha Coleman Gibson.
She is survived by three sons and their wives, J. Dennis and Janie Gibson, O. Kermit and Lois Gibson and Danny W. and Hazel Gibson, all of Chatham; two brothers, Noel Haskins and Otie Haskins, both of Chatham; two granddaughters and their husbands, Brenda and Travis White, Cynthia and Keith Blair, one grandson D.W. Gibson, Jr. and Lona; four great grandchildren, Brian & Candace Blair and Beth & Will White.
She was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers, Selma H. Hedrick, Stella H. Elliot, Herbert Haskins and Harrison Haskins.
She was a member of Marion Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday January 9, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. from the Scott Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Edward L. Earl and Rev. Alfred Rimmer. Interment
will be in the Highland Burial Park in Danville, Virginia.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son Danny Gibson, 247 Maysville Road, Chatham, Va.

David Hoyer
BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. - David J. Hoyer M.D., 57, of Bonita Springs, died Saturday Jan. 6, 2001 in Naples, Fla.
He was married
to Rae Hoyer, who survives.
He was a resident of Bonita Springs since 1988, coming from Danville, Va. He was a graduate of Ohio State University and was a Vietnam Veteran having served in the U.S. Navy, reaching the rank of Lt. Commander. For the past ten years, he worked at the David Lawrence Center in Naples and prior to that he worked at the Ruth Cooper Center in Ft. Myers. He was a member of the Community Congregational United Church of Christ.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Tondya Hoyer, and his father, William H. Hoyer, both of Bonita Springs.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Community Congregational United Church of Christ. Entombment will follow at Naples Memorial Gardens. The family will be holding a memorial service in Danville in the spring.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Walter Shikany’s Bonita Funeral Home.

Barbara Jefferis
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Barbara Ann Jefferis, 61, of Benning Rd., died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000 at Halquist Memorial Hospice Center in Arlington, Va.
Born Jan. 22, 1939 in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Willard Jefferis, who survives, and Iradell Graves Jefferis, who predeceased her.
She was married
to James Johnson.
She attended Danville Public Schools. Later she moved to Washington, D.C. where she was employed by the United States Department of Labor as an economic assistant from Aug. 22, 1976 until her retirement on March 27, 1999. She was a 20 year life-member of Blacks in Government, Dept. of Labor Chapter (BIG-DOL) and supporter of the BIG National Training Conference. She was involved in the planning and implementation stages of the conference long before the BIG-DOL Chapter got involved and she never missed a national conference, even during periods of illness.
In addition to her father of Adelphi, Md., survivors include one son, Brian Petty of Washington, D.C. and one grandson.
A funeral service was held 11 a.m. Jan. 6 at Steward Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard Johnson, Sr. and the Rev. Sidney Samuel officiating. Interment
followed at National Harmony Memorial Park in Largo, Md.

Philomena Kadunc
DANVILLE, Va. - Philomena Virginia LaRiccia Kadunc, 84, of 2526 North Main St., died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after four years of declining health.
Born Sept. 29, 1916 in Bedford, Ohio, she was a daughter of Michael and Rosa Ricelli LaRiccia.
She was married
to William A. Bull, who predeceased her in 1942, and Frank G. Kadunc, who predeceased her in 1971.
She lived most of her life in Ohio, and was a resident of Danville for the past two and a half years. She was a member of Abundant Life Tabernacle. She retired in 1981 from Picker International.
Survivors include one daughter, Donna K. Rossman of Danville; one son, William A. Kadunc of Willowick, Ohio; two sisters, Rose Bocci of Sacramento, Calif. and Manda Davis of Madison, Ohio; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Domonic LaRiccia and Frank LaRiccia, and two sisters, Carmella Nietert and Clara Eddy.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Micki Mumford officiating. Interment
will be at Calvary cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio.
The family will receive friends Tuesday and Wednesday at 120 Old Piney Forest Rd., Lot 22.
