Jimmy Osborne

GRETNA, Va. - James Foster “Jimmy” Osborne III, 38, of 1216 Weatherford Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001.
Born Aug. 30, 1962 in Jackson, Mich.
He was a self-employed brick mason.
Survivors include one daughter, Christina Osborne of the residence; his parents, Betty Watts Collins and Robert Collins of Pulaski, Ga.; one brother, Steven Wheeler of Gretna; five sisters, Debra Rorer of Altavista, Cindy Carter, Laura Hunt and Dawn Martin, all of Gretna, and Lisa Stone of Madison Heights; two step-sisters, Shannon Sutton and Shonda Collins, both of Pulaski, Ga.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Wood Funeral Home, Metter, Ga. with the Rev. Inman Gerald officiating. Interment icon will follow in Lake cemetery, Metter, Ga.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Wood Funeral Home, 800 West Broad St., Metter, Ga.

Si Roark

DANVILLE, Va. - Silas “Si” Herman Roark III, 21, of 136 Lynch St., died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at his residence.
Born March 29, 1979 in Danville, he was a son of Silas Herman Roark Jr. and Beth Wilson Davis, who survive.
He was married to Kristy Jo Vaughan Roark, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Chatham, Va. before moving to Danville in 1990. He was a graduate of George Washington High School Class of 1997. He was employed by the A.C. Corporation of Greensboro, N.C. where he was a pipe fitter. He was of the Baptist faith and attended Moffet Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, his mother of Danville and his father of Chatham, survivors include one son, Tyler Scott Roark of the residence, and two sisters, Linette R. Nuckols and Karen R. Riddle, both of Chatham.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Moffet Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Carlton and the Rev. Wayne Wallace officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence of his mother, Beth W. Davis, 145 Lynch St.
The family suggests that memorials be made to the Tyler Scott Roark Memorial Fund, 560 Pinecroft Rd., Danville, Va., 24540.

Wilber Simpson

Philadelphia, Pa. - Wilber Oran Simpson, 77, of Philadelphia, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001 at St. Agnes Medical Center.
Born Nov. 26, 1923 in Hurt, Va., he was a son of Rueben Floyd and Nannie Short Simpson.
He was the former owner of the Hurt Foundry and served in the Civil Service stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Survivors include two sisters, Hilda Smith of Danville and Nancy Adams of Richmond.
He was predeceased by one brother, Milton D. Simpson and two infant sisters.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Colbert-
Moran Chapel with the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham officiating. Interment icon will follow in the Simpson Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his sister, Hilda Smith, 2388 R&L Smith Drive, Danville.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice.

Alta Slayton

DANVILLE, Va. - Alta Vance Myers Slayton, 80, of 191 Northwest Blvd., died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Born Aug. 26, 1920 in Pittsville, she was a daughter of Zebulon Vance and Vella Howell Myers.
She was married April 9, 1937 to Jessie Howard Slayton, who predeceased her on June 7, 1973.
She lived most of her life in Danville. She was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church and the Young at Heart Club. She was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc. where she worked in No. 4-B Dress.
Survivors include two sisters, Alice M. Pickerel of Gretna and Joyce S. Miller of Virginia Beach.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Tom Brown and the Rev. Thomas Wright officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Rush Walker Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Rush Milton Walker Sr., 80, of 169 Carter Dr., died Saturday Jan. 6, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Born March 18, 1920, in Saltville, he was a son of Benjamin Franklin Walker Jr. and Tiny Clementine Frye Walker.
On October 29, 1939, he was married to Vera Canupp Walker, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville. He was a member of Lynn Haven Baptist Church, and was a former member of Keen Street Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Club. He was a retired plumbing pipefitter and welder. He was a member of the United Association of Plumbers & Pipefitters Union Local No. 491.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Delores Walker Phelps of Danville; one son, Rush M. Walker Jr. of Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister, Myrtle F. Walker of Denbigh; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Paris Walker, Charlie Walker and Jack Walker, and one sister, Annie W. Frye.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Bennie Poovey officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Louis Shawer Cobbs

DANVILLE, Va. - Louis Shawer Cobbs was born January 10, 1912 in Danville, Virginia to James and Georgiana Cobbs.
Louis received his early education in the Danville Public Schools, graduating from John Mercer Langston High School. He recived his formal education at Virginia Union University where he majored in Business Administration.
At an early age he professed Christ as his Savior and was a life member of Calvary Baptist Church. Louis loved his church and was proud to be a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees, as a Sunday School Teacher, and a member of the Layman's Club. He attended Wednesday Prayer Service with active participation. He was a true missionary in every sense of the word because he provided for the youth of the church. He was always recruiting youth to attend Sunday School and Church and inviting the adults as well and was ever mindful of the needs of the youth and was always the first to volunteer monetary means. His last project in the fellowship hall was designed to provide computer classes, a recreation area and work study for the youth. His life at Calvary is detailed in his own words in what he describes as "My Calvary Baptist Church."
He was equally active in civic affairs where he was a member of the Danville Royal Lodge #104, Mt. Nebo Chapter #35 Holy Royal Arch Masons, Christopher Attuck Commanders #18 Knights of Temple, Kuwat Temple #126 Shriners, past President of the Danville Branch N.A.A.C.P., Walden Frances Post #29, Veterans of Foreign Wars #644, Blanks Club, Danville Voters League, Danville Postal Credit Union, Inc., Opera Ebony Concert Guild, Inc., National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 1011, Masonite Corporation, Community Bridge Club, and Westmoreland Neighbor Association.
He was a Staff Sergeant in World War II.
He was united in holy matrimony to the former Lenora Agnes Hardy who predeceased him.
Those left to cherish his memory are one nephew, L. Julius Cobbs of Newark, Del., several great nieces, and nephews, one special dedicated and loving niece, Constance I. Cooke; three goddaughters, Joyce Marie Wilson, Gina Stokes of Washington, DC and Jennifer Cobbs; three great goddaughters, LaJoya Millner, Heather Glymp and Lameka Millner of Danville; one godson, Anton Fitz of Danville, his extended family, D. Pete Watkins of Washington, DC, Leon Watkins of Windmere, FL and Consuella Harris of Cincinnati, OH; special friends, Malloy Harris, Floyd Brown, James Atterburn, Morris Price, Clifton Holiness, Harry Barnes, April Williams, Shirley Wilson, A.C. Muse, James Slade, Atty. Jerry L. Williams, Ann H. Clark and many other relatives and friends.

Daniel Foust

CALLANDS, Va. - Daniel Antley Foust, 83, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 at Richfield Nursing Center, Salem.
Born Feb. 11, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Walter Reid Foust and Fannie Lawrence Foust.
Survivors include three brothers, Sanford R. Foust of Altavista, John C. Foust of Chatham and Leonard H. Foust of Salem.
He was a retired farmer and member of Hollywood Baptist Church. He was a veteran and Sergeant of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, AT Gammon 19th Chapter.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kyle A. Flora officiating. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home.

James Glass

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - James Coley Glass, 80, of 708 Grove Ave. died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born July 25, 1920, in Halifax County, he was a son of J. Coley Glass and Annie Clay Glass.
He was married to Ruby Rickman Glass, who survives. He was a member of First Baptist Church, American Legion Post 8 and the Woodmen of the World 106.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, survivors include one daughter, Nancy Glass Powell of Midlothian and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Fox and the Rev. Frank Riley officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Barbara Jefferis

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Barbara Ann Jefferis, 61, of Benning Rd., died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000 at Halquist Memorial Hospice Center in Arlington, Va.
Born Jan. 22, 1939 in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Willard Jefferis, who survives, and Iradell Graves Jefferis, who predeceased her.
She was married to James Johnson.
She attended Danville Public Schools. Later she moved to Washington, D.C. where she was employed by the United States Department of Labor as an economic assistant from Aug. 22, 1976 until her retirement on March 27, 1999. She was a 20 year life-member of Blacks in Government, Dept. of Labor Chapter (BIG-DOL) and supporter of the BIG National Training Conference. She was involved in the planning and implementation stages of the conference long before the BIG-DOL Chapter got involved and she never missed a national conference, even during periods of illness.
In addition to her father of Adelphi, Md., survivors include one son, Brian Petty of Washington, D.C. and one grandson.
A funeral service was held 11 a.m. Jan. 6 at Steward Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard Johnson, Sr. and the Rev. Sidney Samuel officiating. Interment icon followed at National Harmony Memorial Park in Largo, Md.
Stewart Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Faye Lanum Braden

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Beloved wife of Robert P. Braden, mother of Carol Killmer and Rob Braden, sister of Lonnie Holt, Lawanda Fitzgerald, Jerry Lanum and Larry Lanum;
Grandmother of Katie and Elizabeth Killmer and Dennis and Kendall Braden. She was preceded in death by one sister, Carol Wade.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Louis Catholic Church Monday, January 8th.
Entombment was at Mount Comfort cemetery.

Raymond Harris

CALLANDS, Va. - Raymond Harris, 58, of Washington and formerly of Callands, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 in Washington.
Born April 25, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Sam P. and Virginia Swanson Harris.
Prior to retirement due to disability, he was a construction worker and member of St. James Apostolic Holiness Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Reva Giles of Martinsville; two sons, Ronald Morrison and Daryel Bigglow, both of Danville; four sisters, Josie Myers of Washington, Odessa Giles of Martinsville, Kitty Kelly of Rockville, Md. and Patricia Ann Harris of Danville, and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Joe Lewis Harris and David Harris and two sisters, Lorraine Harris and Louise Hunt.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home with Elder Robert Conward officiating. Interment icon will follow at the Harris Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home.
