Ira Barber
DRY FORK, Va. - Ira Melvin Barber Sr., 69, of 3116 Sandy Creek Road, died Thursday, July 4, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 4, 1933 in Lake Cross, he was the son of Turner Barber and Nelor Barber Black.
He was married Dec. 22, 1947 to Margaret Martin Barber, who survives. He lived in Danville prior to moving to Dry Fork in 1982. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired due to disability. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two sons, Ira Melvin Barber Jr. and Ira Buford Barber, both of Dry Fork; three daughters, Delores B. WIllis, Billie B. Carter and Kathy B. Sigmon, all of Dry Fork; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at the family cemetery on Flamingo Road with the Rev. W. Clay Knick officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Billie B. Carter, 229 Katie Hill Road, Dry Fork.

Clinton C. ‘Dick' Battermann
DANVILLE, Va. - Clinton C. "Dick" Battermann, age 78 of 114 Vine Circle in The Green Acres Community died Friday, July 5, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for the past seven weeks.
Mr. Battermann was born in Ringgold, Va., May 16, 1924, a son of the late Frederick C. A. Battermann and Hattie Keen Battermann.
He was a member of The Kentuck Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon and Sunday school teacher. Also, he was a member of the Civitan Club, Elk's and The Virginia-Carolina Field Trial Club. Mr. Battermann was a veteran of World War II serving in The United States Army and was a recipient of The Purple Heart while serving in The Battle of the Bulge Campaign. He was a graduate of Dan River High School. Before his retirement, Mr. Battermann owned and operated The Heat Service and Equipment Company. He was predeceased by one brother, W.A. "Bill" Batterman. Two sisters, Geraldine B. Swicegood and Emma B. Vick. He was married to Alise Davis Battermann on November 3, 1944 who survives of the home.
Besides his wife, Mr. Battermann is survived by one daughter, Joan B. VanOsten and her husband, Dale VanOsten, Jr. of Danville. Two granddaughters: Holly V. Powell and her husband, Billy Powell of Sutherlin, Va. and Amy V. Cummings and her husband, John Cummings of Boones Mill, Va. Also surviving are three brothers: Charles R. Battermann of Danville, Va., Brantley K. Batterman, Danville, and F. Mickel Battermann of Waxhaw, N.C. Two sisters: Betty B. Gibson, Danville and Peggy B. Williams of Danville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 7, 2002 at 3 p.m. from The Kentuck Baptist Church by The Reverend Bill Soyars and The Reverend A. C. Smith. Interment will follow in The Highland Burial Park. Military graveside honors will be conducted by The American Legion Memorial Post #325.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home, Saturday, July 6, 2002, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence, 114 Vine Circle in The Green Acres Community.
John Brooks
DANVILLE, Va. - John Henry Brooks Jr., 64, of 228 Vistor Drive, died July 3, 2002 at his residence.
Born Oct. 5, 1937 in Halifax County, he was a son of John Henry Brooks Sr. and Elsie Watkins Brooks, who both survive.
He was married to Nancy A. Brooks, who survives. He was employed for more than 30 years at Dan River 4 B Weaver and a member of Apostolic Faith Church.
Survivors, in addition to his parents and wife, include four daughters, Brenda Broadnax, Cassandra Betts, Latisha Brooks and Faye Motley, all of Danville; five sons, Leonard Brooks, Wayne Brooks, Windell Brooks and Arnold Brooks, all of Sutherlin, and James Brooks of Alton; three stepdaughters, Tracy Bowman of Mount Airy, N.C., Crystal Turner of Ringgold and Malissa Bowman of Halifax; one stepson, Travis Brock of Danville; five sisters, Beatrice Edmonds and Clarree Keene, both of Sutherlin, Fannie B. Cobbs of Washington, DC, Willie Ann Saunders of Blairs and Elsie Jackson of Charleston, S.C.; one brother, James Brooks of Sutherlin; 31 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and eight stepgrandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Apostolic Faith Church with the Bishop W.H. Watkins officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Hills.
A viewing will be held 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Beavers Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 3489 Kerns Church Road in Sutherlin.

Florence Clark
DANVILLE, Va. - Florence Poole Clark, 80, of 207 Lansdale St., died July 3, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 9, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charlie Poole and Ella Flippen Poole.
She was married to the Rev. Burnett Clark, who survives. She was a housewife and was a member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include three daughters, Neely Fitzgerald of Danville, Janet Thomas and Shelby Clark, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Mountain Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Arthur Crews officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The viewing was held 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence of Neely Fitzgerald, 2933 Finch Drive.

Rev. Letcher Hodnett
CHATHAM, Va. - Rev. Letcher L. (Freeman) Hodnett Jr. of 285 White Street, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
Born Feb. 2, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Letcher Hodnett Sr. and Anna Carter Hodnett.
He was married to Emma B. Hodnett, who survives. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, a member of the male chorus and the Deacon's Union. He was retired from Dan River Mills.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Freeman Hodnett of the residence and Randy Hodnett of Java; five daughters, Dora Harris of Dry Fork, Minister Prence Anna Craft and Frances Martin, both of Chatham, Emma Hodnett of Danville and Laurie Hodnett of Dry Fork; one sister, Henrietta Royal of Danville; one stepsister, Ressie Walker of S.C.; 22 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three sons, James Hodnett, Herman Hodnett and Carl Hodnett.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. William Tarpley officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Cornelia Gentry Lovell
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Cornelia Gentry Lovell, 72, of 5202 Walter's Mill Road, died Thursday, July 4, 2002 at 8:10 p.m. at her residence. She had been in declining health for three years.
Born October 15, 1929 in Caswell County, NC, she was a daughter of Frank S. Gentry, who predeceased her, and Mary Cornell Gentry, who survives.
She was married December 24, 1949 to James E. Lovell, who survives. Mrs. Lovell was born in Caswell County, NC, where she lived most of her life. She was a graduate of Cobb Memorial School and worked for Dan River, Inc. for 29 years as a clerk in the Billing and Shipping Department. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church and taught Sunday School and was a volunteer for meals on Wednesday nights. She also was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Providence Fire Department.
Survivors, in addition to her husband and mother, both of the residence, include one daughter, Cynthia Lovell of Danville; one son, Dennis Lovell of the residence; one sister, Brenda Bryan of Danville; one brother, Frank E. Gentry of Providence, NC; one grandchild, Sharon George of Danville; two great-grandchildren, Kyle George and Gavin George, both of Danville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 7, 2002 at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ken Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Providence Baptist Church Cemetery in Providence, NC.

Frederick Nichols
DANVILLE, Va. - Frederick George Nichols, 85, of 14 Laurel Road, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born July 31, 1916, in New York, N.Y., he was a son of George Nichols and Julia Nichols.
He was a tool designer at Grumman, Inc. in Long Island, N.Y. before retiring and relocating.
He is survived by one brother, Charles Nichols of Providence, R.I.; and numerous grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two sons, Alan Nichols and Jeffrey Nichols.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Serenus Churn officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Patricia S. Gandy
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Patricia S. Gandy died Oct. 26, 2002.
A native of Chesapeake, she was the daughter of Ramon and Juanita Shacklock, who both survive.
She was a longtime resident of Virginia Beach and graduated from Indian River High School. After she graduated, she went into the building materials business. She was one of the first women in sales in Tidewater. She worked with several companies before finding a home at Kempsville Building Materials.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Scott Gandy; a son, Brian Jackson of Portsmouth; two stepsons, Michael Gandy of Los Angeles, Calif. and Stephen Gandy of Virginia Beach; a stepdaughter, Nicole Gandy of Virginia Beach; and a brother, Ramon Shacklock of Danville.
The family received friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at H.D. Oliver Funeral Home, 2002 Laskin Road.
Pauline Renninger Hatchett
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Pauline Renninger Hatchett, 97, formerly of 2816 Old N.C. Hwy. 86 North, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home, Danville, following a lengthy illness.
Born Oct. 7, 1905, in Denver, Pa., she was the daughter of Ephriam Renninger and Valeria Flickinger Renninger.
She was a graduate of Millersville University in June of 1924. She was a school teacher, homemaker and a member of Purley United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Hines Hatchett; three brothers and four sisters.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Purley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jaylynn Byassee officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Thomas Kerr Laird, MD
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Thomas Kerr Laird, MD, died on October 28, 2002, at the King's Grant Retirement Community in Martinsville, VA, where he had been living since 1993. A memorial service will be held at King's Grant on Thursday, October 31, 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow at the New Monmouth Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Kerr's Creek, VA.
"Dr. Kerr", as his many friends and patients knew him, was born on May 9, 1911, at Kerr's Creek, VA, the only son of James M. and Agnes McClung Laird. He graduated with honors from Washington and Lee University, Lexington, VA, and earned the Doctor of Medicine in 1937 from the Medical College of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD. He then established a surgical practice in Montgomery, WV, at Laird Memorial Hospital. Dr. Laird was instrumental in establishing health care centers at Summersville and Widen, WV, bringing quality health services to isolated regions of the State. Dr. Laird relocated to Danville, VA in 1969, where he joined surgical practice with the late Dr. Henry Wiseman. Dr. Laird retired in 1984 after forty-seven years in the practice of medicine.
Dr. Laird was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, Fellow of the Southeastern Surgical Association, member of the Virginia Surgical Association and the American Medical Association. He was active in the Presbyterian Church at both Montgomery and Danville, serving as elder. He also served as a Director of the Montgomery National Bank for a number of years.
Dr. Laird was married to the former Ruth Lee Carper of Welch, WV for forty-nine years before her death in 1994. He is survived by his daughter, Alice Kerr Laird and her husband, Robert G. Goehrig of Brattleboro, VT, his son, James Carper Laird and wife Mary of Smithville, TX, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, as well as two sisters, Betty Dixon and Mary Hotinger, both of Roanoke.
Dr. Kerr Laird was a patient, thoughtful, and self-sacrificing brother, husband, father, physician, and gentleman. He always thought of others before himself and held service to God and humanity as his life's calling. Those who knew and loved him are comforted by the fact that now, he is first.

Janet Primiano Pfaeffli
HERISAU, Switzerland - Janet Primiano Pfaeffli, 44, died October 25, 2002, after a brief illness, in the Memorial Hospital in Herisau.
Born in Danville, Va. on April 17, 1958, she was the daughter of John A. Primiano, who survives and Lillie Hale Primiano, who predeceased her.
She was a graduate of George Washington High School and attended Danville Community College.
She is survived by her husband, Rene Pfaeffli; two sons, Eric and David of Niederurnen; her father, John A. Primiano; stepmother Shirley Day Primiano of Danville; a sister, Sallie Primiano Boone of Blacksburg, Va.; and a brother, Michael Primiano of Winston-Salem, N.C.
A memorial service will be held at Schoolfield Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 2. Interment will be in Niederurnen, Switzerland.

Pearl Jones Scearce
DANVILLE, Va. - Pearl Jones Scearce, 80, of 156 Forestdale Drive, Apt. 108, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health since 1990.
Born April 13, 1922, in Danville, she was the daughter of Thomas Malcolm Jones and Essie Barker Jones Wilson.
She had lived her entire life in Danville. Prior to her retirement in 1982, she worked for Danville Regional Medical Center as a nurse's assistant and sitter. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was formerly married to Melvin F. Scearce.
She is survived by three daughters, Margaret S. Gardner of Cascade, Brenda S. Trammell of Ringgold and Donna S. Giles of Axton; a son, James F. Scearce of Danville; a sister, Berta Mae Butler of Clarksville, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by a son, Sanford Ray "Pete" Scearce; and two sisters, Juanita Owen and Pansy Ann Burgess.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Albert officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

Nathaniel Wilson Jr.
DANVILLE, Va. - Nathaniel Wilson Jr., 66, of 241 Belmeade Court, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 5, 1936, in Danville, he was the son of Gladys Graves Wilson and Nathaniel Wilson Sr.
He was married to Ann Wilson, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Nathaniel Wilson III, Barry Wilson, Tyrone Wilson and Reginald Wilson, all of Danville; three daughters, Jackie Wilson, Cynthia Wilson and Melissa Wilson, all of Danville; one brother, Stanford Wilson of Landover, Md.; two sisters, Clarissa Lovelace of Mt. Vernon, N.Y. and Romona Wright of Danville; 20 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Herbert Dickerson officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.
